Genius 3D Mammography at WellStar detects 41% more invasive breast cancer A 3D mammogram at WellStar Cobb Women’s Imaging Center provides a series of detailed images of the breast, allowing doctors to better evaluate breast tissue layer by layer, making fine details more visible and cancer more detectable. Because of its clinically proven increase in accuracy, a 3D exam can help reduce false-positive callbacks for additional imaging by up to 40%, bringing increased peace of mind.

REAL ESTATE in OUR TOWN

by Deb Ratchford

SELLING YOUR HOME: WHEN SHOULD YOU TAKE THE LEAP? Unsure when to sell your home? If you’ve been on the fence, now’s the time to take a leap: it’s a seller’s market right now! Limited home inventory has driven home prices up and days on the market down, with average homes spending 42 days on market and median original listing price up 6.4% and still rising, due to continued low supply of homes. Don’t just let the market decide for you though. Here are the three other factors you should consider when deciding to sell your home: You’re Financially Ready to Buy a Home Again Make sure you’re in the right place financially to sell your home and move. Make sure your credit is in good order, and ensure that your debt is in the clear. The ideal situation for home sellers is having all non-mortgage debt paid off, and three to six months of expenses in your family’s emergency fund. Financial maturity is key to a successful, stress-free home selling experience. Equity is in the Green The first quarter of 2017 found only 10.4% of homes to have negative equity: that is, only 10.4% of homes had a larger mortgage than their home was worth. This percentage has been falling since 2012, as the housing market rebounded after the recession. If you’re not sure where your equity stands, you can consult with a real estate agent to get a free comparative market

PAGE 10

analysis (CMA) that will determine an approximate value for your home. You’re ready to sell and buy a new home if your home’s sale can provide at least 20% equity towards your next purchase. By putting 20% or more down on your home, you can avoid private mortgage insurance, and save hundreds of dollars each year. Your Home No longer Fits Your Needs Do you need more room for your expanding family? Or maybe your children have moved out, and now you have too much room! Whatever has happened in your life since you bought your home that’s keeping you from living there as comfortably as you used to should be a large part of your decision making process. More than just physical features of your home, you need to be emotionally prepared to step back and let your home go. Once you have said good-bye, emotionally, to your current home, you’re able to sell it and find a new place to call home. Make the Right Choice for You Even if you meet all the above, there is no one plan for everyone. Consult with a professional real estate agent to discuss your personal situation, and figure out what’s best for you and your budget. Call today to get a free market analysis, at (678) 570-4779, or visit me online at debsellshouses.com to get started!

STYLE REPORT

by Tara Hanover

Wow, the hustle and bustle of summer has quickly come to an end. Can you believe that September 22nd marks the first day of fall? I don’t know about you, but I have no idea where summer went or even what I did, but I feel like I could use some beauty sleep…Holy Moly-I am exhausted!

Speaking of “Beauty Sleep”, have you ever wondered where that saying originated? The dictionary says this about Beauty Sleep: Sleep considered to be sufficient to keep one looking young and beautiful. WebMD wrote an article titled The Truth About Beauty Sleep. The very first paragraph states, “When it comes to your beauty routine, sleep may be the closest thing there is to a fountain of youth. Your body repairs itself and recovers while you snooze, and that leads to a long list of benefits for your looks. The key is to get enough shut-eye -- 7 to 9 quality hours each night.” Oh, ok, no problem. I will do just that…between work, kids, life and stress! EASY PEEZY, right? HA! How many of us are lucky enough to get 7-9 hours of sleep EACH NIGHT? I feel sure not many of you said a resounding “ME”! So if you are in the same boat as I am and you survive on very little sleep and lots of caffeine, let me share a few tips with you. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER: Not only do you sleep better if you are well hydrated, but your skin will also look better. *If your skin tends to be extra dry and dehydrated use a humidifier as you sleep to restore the skin’s moisture. SLEEP ON YOUR BACK: If you tend to favor one side you may be creating wrinkles. Repeated pressure on your skin can cause lines that don’t always disappear after waking. CHANGE YOUR PILLOW CASE OFTEN: Cosmopolitan Magazine put it best when they said a dirty pillowcase is a “ bacteria nest for eight hours a night”. YUCK! Keep your hair off your face-Excess oil is never good for the complexion. STAY AWAY FROM SALTY FOOD AND ALCOHOL AND USE A THICK OR SECOND PILLOW: This will keep the excess fluid from collecting around your eyes. REMOVE YOUR MAKEUP: Sleeping with make-up can cause clogged pours. Your skin needs to breathe at night. EXFOLIATE AND APPLY A GOOD MOISTURIZER & EYE CREAM: Moisturizers and eye creams hydrate, reduce fine lines and plump the skin but nothing will happen unless you remove the old skin cells by exfoliating first. *Be aware not to over exfoliate and watch the sensitive eye area. FACE MASKS: There is a facemask on the market for any skin issues you could ask for from hydrating to unclogging pores to smoothing out fine lines. You can have a spa treatment as you sleep and a bonus: It’s way more cost effective at home. Betty White once said, “Get at least 8 hours of sleep, 9 if you’re ugly”. Ouch! Clearly she was joking... However if she saw me some days she’d probably say, “Sorry, there are just not enough hours in a day for the amount of sleep you need”.

Remember every princess needs her beauty sleep. Everyday regardless of what life throws your way,

“Get Up, Dress Up, Show Up and NEVER Give Up!”

SPORTS AND CONCUSSIONS

View our New Expanded & Remodeled Showroom today!

Children’s helps get young athletes safely back in the game after concussions. Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta treats more than 2,000 children and teens each year who suffer from concussions. With fall sports season underway, Children’s will see all types of athletes, ranging from high school football players to youth cheerleaders. The pediatric concussion team at Children’s specializes in treating head injuries of all severities, and tailors each patient’s treatment plan to meet their specific needs. Even if athletes use or wear equipment properly and follow the game rules, head injuries can happen. When they do, it’s important that the athlete be held out of participating in sports and possibly school, until he is evaluated and cleared by a medical professional trained in concussion management. If a player sustains a second concussion before he has fully recovered from the first injury, there can be severe consequences. It’s important that kids who have suffered a concussion take the time to recover.

There is no set time frame for when an athlete can return to play or school. Athletes must be completely symptom-free at rest and during physical exertion before returning to sports or recreational activities. Children’s uses Immediate Postconcussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing ( I m PAC T ) , a computer-based evaluation for sports concussions. If the ImPACT evaluation is taken before the season starts to identify an athlete’s baseline score, it can be compared to post-concussion testing if the athlete suffers a head injury later. Once an athlete is symptom-free, has gradually returned to school and activities, has normal cognitive test results and is cleared by a medical professional trained to manage concussions, he can return to sports.

FACT:

Social and emotional intelligence may be the most important determinant of a child’s future success.

Lemons and Baby Ruths by Mark Orler

Each year we have taken the family down to Florida to remind the Floridians just how blessed they are that we live far away from them; and this year was no different. The weather reports for the week were terrible, but we decided to risk it anyway. Just another instance of making lemonade out of lemons, I guess. The morning of “the incident” began like every other during our vacation, the family woke up and spent two hours getting sun block applied, swimsuits orchestrated, coolers loaded and a trailer-load of beach supplies organized for shipment to the shore. Just “getting” to the beach was such an ordeal that we instituted a “no leaving” rule that could only be broken by a dire bathroom emergency, or lightning. We had already experienced a couple of days where rain storms had forced others off the beach, but we had huddled under our umbrellas and tents and waited the brief storms out only to be blessed by sunshine and rainbows shortly after they began. No lemons for us! The place where we were staying had a pool, but we had tried not to use it because it was as hot as bathwater and there were always tons of people in it. But, one day I acquiesced to the entreaties of my children and said we could swim there after lunch.

Awesomeness baked fresh daily.

As soon as we got there my radar went on high alert. It was chock full of small kids and few adults. The resort had a kid’s camp during the day and we had apparently chosen the exact time that they had given the “campers” a free swim opportunity so the counselors could go have a smoke. I entered the pool and my eyes were immediately drawn to a sunken object I recognized. Someone had “Baby-Ruthed” in the pool. I won’t go into detail, but being the parent of five kids and having experienced hundreds of diaper changes, I was immediately impressed by the sheer size of the deposit and the attention that some parent had paid in making sure their precious angel got enough fiber in their diet. I grabbed two of our kids and got them out while giving my wife instructions to do the same with the other three. I then went over to the Life Guard on duty and told him what I had seen. Now, never having been a Life Guard, and not knowing the hierarchy of that group, I was amazed to see how they worked to verify my find. Five of them stood in a circle and performed Paper, Scissors, Rock to see who would be the unlucky person to confirm the discovery. A lanky boy with shaggy blond hair despondently grabbed a pair of swim goggles after his Scissors were decimated by another boy’s Rock and quickly disappeared beneath the surface near the “accident” site. He quickly re-appeared and gave the universal symbol in Lifeguard speak announcing his find. He drew his hand across his throat. The cacophony of whistles that came next were something to behold as all the Life Guards began shouting “Everyone! Out of the pool!”

ONLINE ORDERING NOW AVAILABLE!

Our kids were decimated. They had been looking forward to the pool and were heartbroken to see the Closed Until Further Notice – Biological Hazard” signs go up all around the area. Just then, the Life Guard that I had spoken to originally came up to me to thank me for my vigilance and mentioned that there was another pool on the property that was just a shuttle-ride away if we still wanted to swim. I looked back at the solemn tear-soaked faces of my children and asked him to point the way.

We had the best afternoon playing in that pool and the kids completely forgot about the other pool incident entirely. Yep, just another instance of how just when you think the universe is throwing you nothing but “Baby Ruth’s” you get a glass of refreshing lemonade instead. Something like that.

Working Out with a Buddy The benefits to having a workout buddy are numerous and some activities are just more fun when doing them with a friend CHECK OUT THESE WORKOUTS MADE BETTER WITH YOUR BESTIE.

Rock Climbing

Dance Class

While possible to do solo, rock climbing is a true partner sport, requiring both good communication and trust between participants. Not only is rock climbing a great workout, it also helps you and your climbing partner forge a closer bond. If neither you or your friend know how to rock climb, look for an outdoor rock climbing class in your surrounding area or join an indoor climbing gym.

If you’ve never taken a fitness-based dance class, you’re in for a treat — the music, moves, and energy makes it a great way to burn calories with a friend. This is especially true because it often feels like more of a social experience than a workout.

Cycling Whether it’s a leisurely cruise along the beach or biking intensely on wooded trails, cycling is a great way to spend the day together. While you don’t need a buddy to hit the bike path (unless you’re on a tandem), it can make for a better — and safer — day. Having a friend along makes a long ride go by quicker and gives you an even better excuse to stop for a lunch break at local hot spots along the way. And if anything were to happen to you while you’re on the road, your buddy can stay with you and facilitate getting the help you’ll need.

Hiking Safety is the main reason why hiking with a buddy is a good idea. Many hiking trails are remote, on challenging terrain, and easy to get lost on — all reasons to have someone with you. Besides, even the easiest hikes are more enjoyable when you have someone to share the breathtaking views with!

PAGE 20

Another bonus to bringing a friend: If you don’t have much experience with dance, these types of classes can also be a little nerve-wracking. Whether it’s pole dancing, Zumba, or hip-hop, the two of you can laugh your way through as you master the moves together! In addition, running, barre classes, boot camps and Crossfit are workouts that encourage a competitive spirit and are so much more fun when done with a buddy.

IF THE UNTHINKABLE HAPPENS, WHO WILL TAKE CARE OF HIM? PROTECT YOUR KIDS. CALL US TODAY!

Reset to Healthy Dispelling the Myths of hCG The hCG protocol, first developed by Dr. Simmeons in the early 1950’s, has been utilized for more than 60 years. Despite this, fact there is still much controversy surrounding the diet. hCG Weight Loss Atlanta is a medical weight loss facility specializing in the use of hCG for weight loss. We have been administering this protocol since 2009, completing more than 12,000 treatments. Based on current scientific data and our extensive clinical experience, we would like to shed some light on this “controversial diet” and separate fact from fiction. 1. What is hCG and how does it work? hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is a hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy. In the presence of hCG, the body releases fat from abnormal fat stores (hips, thighs, and abdomen) thereby allowing for the survival of the fetus during times of famine. We use this fat-releasing effect in conjunction with a fat-burning (ketogenic) diet. Essentially, with hCG, we are able to do the Atkins diet without the consumption of dietary fat.

2. Does hCG cause harm or have any side effects? We are confident hCG isn’t harmful since patient hCG blood levels obtained during the protocol are exponentially less than what a woman experiences during pregnancy. The only side effect directly attributed to hCG that a small percentage of our patients (about 15%) experience is some menstrual irregularity.

3. How long can you stay on hCG?

6. Is hCG safe for men to take? Absolutely! As a matter of fact, men lose almost twice the amount of weight as women, and hCG does not cause any feminine side-effects in men.

7. Do you need appetite suppressants during this diet? The use of appetite suppressants is not a necessity nor is it recommended. The fat release from the hCG tricks the body into sensing it has thousands of calories/day available for energy, so hunger is not an issue.

8. I’ve heard you can only eat 500 calories per day on this diet. Isn’t this dangerous? If you ate 500 calories per day without using hCG and being in ketosis, then yes, it would indeed be dangerous. Also, the 500 calorie tagline is a misnomer. The beauty of the hCG diet is you can eat as much food as you need. You simply must adhere to the serving sizes and food options.

9. I have tried numerous diets and lost weight on most of them. However, I have NEVER been successful in keeping the weight off. What makes the hCG protocol any different? Most diets are simply different versions of calorie restriction. The problem with calorie restriction is that it ultimately slows down one’s metabolism. Thus when one starts eating a normal amount of calories again, the weight comes back with a vengeance. The exact opposite happens on hCG. When you come off the diet, you have a higher metabolism than when you started. Furthermore, it has been hypothesized there is a corrective effect on the hypothalamus after taking hCG. The hypothalamus is the gland responsible for hunger, satiety, metabolism, and other functions, so this would indeed make perfect sense. In our practice, 70% of the patients who are successful on the diet are able to stay within 2 pounds of their last injection for years after completing the diet.

Patients start to develop a tolerance to hCG after 6 weeks and weight loss slows significantly. We recommend a 4 week break after 43 days to dissipate the tolerance before restarting the protocol. Our patients lose weight more efficiently and stay motivated this way.

4. How much fat loss can one realistically expect to lose on hCG? On a well-designed hCG program, female patients can expect to lose 1/2 pound per day. Less than 10% of this will be from lean body mass. When we combine this protocol with 2 days/week of resistance training, the lean body mass (muscle) loss is almost negligible.

5. Since hCG is not FDA approved for weight loss, how am I able to do this legally? hCG for weight loss is considered an “off-label” use. This is perfectly legal when prescribed under the supervision of an M.D. or D.O.

AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Month by Amber Burckhalter

September is the American Kennel Club Responsible Dog Ownership month. So, what exactly is “responsible dog ownership”? Ask ten people and you are likely to get ten different answers. This month, we take a look at the top five steps you can take to be the responsible dog owner your pup and your community need you to be. 1. Health - Canine disease and illness can vary from annoying to devastating, as we have recently seen in the case of the canine flu outbreak that struck Atlanta. As an owner, keeping your dog healthy, vaccinated and free from parasites is a serious responsibility to not only your own dog, but also the community in which your dog lives. Keep your dog’s vaccines up to date, feed them a high-quality food, make sure you are giving monthly heartworm preventative, have them groomed regularly and, if your dog is ill or injured, make sure you see your vet. Sick dogs are not only a problem for you, but for our community. 2. Training & Socialization - The statistics on abandoned dogs in shelters and rescues vary, but it is widely accepted that most abandoned dogs are untrained. Dogs should at least understand basic direction like “sit” and “stay.” In an emergency situation, these cues could save your pet’s life. By training and socializing your dog, you greatly reduce the chances of your dog developing behavioral problems, getting lost or ending up in a shelter. K-9 Coach offers private, group and inboard training to help you and your family have a forever dog and build a lifetime of great memories together. 3. Leash - While we all wish that our dogs could safely roam freely and play outdoors, the reality is that containment laws exist and are important. Keeping your dog on a leash is crucial to their safety and the safety of others and helps avoid an unwanted call from animal control. Make sure you check your fence and gates periodically to keep your dog from accidentally escaping your yard and, or getting injured. Never take your dog off leash in a public location: remember not everyone loves dogs and not all dogs are friendly.

4. Exercise - Part of your pup’s needs include physical and mental exercise. Many issues owners have with their dog’s behavior can be directly attributed to a lack of exercise and too much energy. We often refer to too much energy as negative energy. Run, walk and play games with your dog every day and make sure to provide plenty of mentally stimulating toys. Some ideas include fetch and frisbee, of course, but also games like hide and seek, soccer, water-based games (for those who like to swim), long walks with play breaks, etc... If, like so many families these days, it is hard to find the time, join our award winning playcare and take home a tired, happy pup at the end of the day. 5. Identification - Do you remember the last time you checked your dog’s tag and collar? Often, we put a tag and collar on our pups and forget to occasionally check that the identification is still adequate or even legible. Tags get lost, printing fades and collars get worn out or outgrown. Replace the collar and tag as needed and for an added layer of protection, speak to your veterinarian about microchipping your dog. Microchips can help get your pup back home safe if they get lost and are not wearing any identification. As always, K-9 Coach is available for you to help with and address any of your dog related needs. So, in celebration of Responsible Dog Ownership month, show us your dog’s tag and collar at check in and receive 10% off any retail item that day. Need a new collar??? Purchase on in our retail area during September and receive 10% off your entire purchase.
