Impact of Exercise on Emotional Health by Leisa A. Bailey, Ph.D. The health benefits of regular physical activity and exercise are pretty universally accepted. These include a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and stroke as well as protection against some cancers and osteoporosis. Additionally, there is impressive research which indicates physical activity also improves psychological well-being. While much of this research is based on broad, population-based correlational studies, (meaning the scientists are studying associations that exist between exercise and mental health variables); the inferences are consistent and powerful. The word “exercise” may bring thoughts of running or heading to the gym to lift weights. However, physical activities such as gardening, washing the car, walking around the block can also be valuable, especially when a part of every day life. Any activity which gets the body moving, gets the heart rate up and expends energy can provide the benefits to physical and emotional health. While there is an impressive and growing understanding of the emotional benefits of an active life style and a regular exercise program, the focus of research has been on the tremendous impacts on depression, anxiety, and improved cognitive functioning. Depression is one of the most common mental conditions that affects people worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 350 million experience depression. Unfortunately, depression is a growing problem, and is set to be the 2nd biggest medical condition by 2020. These statistics demand a focus on improved treatment options. “There is good epidemiological data to suggest that active people are less depressed than inactive people. And people who were active and stopped tend to be more depressed than those who maintain or initiate an exercise program,” says James Blumenthal, PhD, a clinical psychologist at Duke University. Dr. Blumenthal has explored the mood-exercise connection and asserts that exercise is generally comparable to medications for patients with major depressive disorder. Additionally, his research has shown that, “Exercise seems not only important for treating depression, but also in preventing relapse”. The results of over 30 published papers substantiate an indisputable link with exercise and reduction of anxiety. It appears that even short bursts of 5 minutes of aerobic exercise can substantially improve anxiety. The research also indicates that those individuals training for periods of 10 to 15 weeks will receive the greatest beneficial effects. Exercise has been shown to assist in the reduction of stress and an increase in sense of relaxation; improve sleep; increase in pain tolerance; and act as a powerful distraction from daily stressors or worries.

Research also indicates regular exercise is associated with better cognitive functioning over the course of life. Cardiovascular exercise can create new brain cells which improve overall brain performance. Regular physical activity boosts memory and ability to learn new things; and exercise, especially between ages 25 and 45, increases the chemicals in the brain that support and prevent degeneration of the hippocampus, an important part of the brain for memory and learning. For the brain, exercise is an anti-aging tool. There is growing research suggesting the potential of a bigger benefit when one focuses on the exercise activity rather than “zoning out”. Adding this mindfulness element, maintaining intention and attention on the body and how it feels with the exercise, has been shown to not only improve physical condition faster, but adds the enormous benefits of meditation to exercise. Even with the knowledge of the value of exercise on emotional health, adding this to busy lives can feel overwhelming. Important to know is that even a bit of activity is better than nothing. One can experience many of the powerful mental health benefits of exercise with 30-minutes of moderate exercise five times a week….or two 15-minute…. or even three 10-minute exercise sessions can also work just as well. The goal should be to get moving …. And keep going!!

STYLE REPORT

by Tara Hill

May is truly one of my favorite months of the year. Why you may ask? Well, school is ending, summer is beginning, and we also get the chance to celebrate the amazing mothers in our lives. Oh and it’s MY BIRTHDAY (this is a big one). The actual number has never bothered me. I always look forward to my birthday...my BIRTHDAY SUIT however is another story. With every year and every baby I have to admit my birthday suit has definitely taken a hit. When strategically covered, clothed and the proper shape wear has been used, I can typically pull it off and feel pretty good about it. However, the summer months do pose a bit of a problem. There is only so much you can do with the limited wardrobe of the season. Sometimes I dream about how nice it would be if we had a drawstring positioned right at our belly button (stay with me) and when we needed it we could give it a good tug, and it would pull everything up, in and back in its original place. Wouldn’t that be AMAZING? Until then….. here are some cooler shape wear ideas and brands you can use during these warmer months: Good Housekeeping’s research institute (GHRI) evaluates products on site for consumer review. Below are some of their favorite “cool and comfortable” shape wear tips. Choose breathable fabrics Flexees by Maidenform’s Dream collection, Bali’s High-Waist Slimmers, and Yummie Tummie’s Stephanie 2-way tank are all made with moisture wicking cool comfort fabric. Look for lightweight styles Skinny Britches by Spanx come in various styles and are perfect for the warmer months. Try Minimal Coverage Cosabella’s Never Say Never shapers offer tummy control without wearing full shape wear.

Popular brands include the Miraclesuit and the Magicsuit, slimming and tummy control swimwear. You either love them and can’t live without them or you feel like a can of biscuits ready to be popped open! What happened to just wrapping yourself in a towel or sarong until you get to the edge of the pool, slipping it off as quickly as possible and hustling in? If the thought of shape wear of any kind during the warmer months makes you feel as if you are trapped in Saran Wrap- do not worry. Try garments that offer built in slimming properties like underwear, leggings and tanks that provide tummy or thigh control. Luckily there are many brands on the market. It’s really up to you to decide what fits YOU best. And believe me when I say that they ALL fit differently. My words of wisdom- for what they’re worth! Instead of making ourselves crazy and uncomfortable, let’s all just have fun and enjoy summer! Take on the attitude that You are beautiful and if someone doesn’t agree, then they don’t have to look. But you deserve to enjoy life and all that summer has to offer.

15th Annual “Through the Garden Gate” Garden • May 13 from 10AM – 5PM “Through the Garden Gate” tour is designed to demonstrate to the public how the Master Gardener Volunteers of Cobb County (MGVOCC) maintain their own landscapes. Each year several private gardens and various projects are selected to be on tour. These are not “connoisseur” or “checkbook” gardens, but rather “teaching gardens” providing real-life lessons and inspiration.

Wildlife and Rain Garden The Wildlife and Rain Garden is the first garden in Cobb County to be listed on the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail. But more than that, it is a demonstration site created in 2004 by the Cobb County Water System to show residents how storm water can be managed in creative, effective and aesthetically pleasing ways. Always improving, the garden now includes a multitude of special places to wander through and enjoy. Milkweed plants will also be sold on site by Monarchs Across Georgia.

Rural Retreat There is always something in bloom, enjoyable to look at or tasty to eat at Master Gardeners Becky and Jerry Blades five (5) acre garden which was part of the old McEachern Farm in Powder Springs. Visitors will experience the Blades’ multiple gardening interests, which includes organic vegetable gardening, native plants that support wildlife and beekeeping to name a few. Their property is a Certified Habitat with Atlanta Audubon and Monarchs Across Georgia. Rain barrels supply water to their organic vegetable garden.

Suburban Sanctuary The Dowell Garden is a lesson in creating the perfect place for the plants that you love - even in a typical metro-Atlanta suburban subdivision. Master Gardener and conifer lover Dorothy Dowell transformed her garden from ordinary to extraordinary by creating a perfect home for evergreens and her other favorite plants. The backyard includes a small Koi and goldfish pond which leads to a shady woodland garden. Beautiful at any time of year, visitors will enjoy the pond, the variety of Japanese maples, flowering trees, shrubs, vines and flowers.

Still Elementary School Garden Fifty students strong, Still Elementary School’s “After School Garden Gang” await you! Members engage in a variety of garden activities including composting, water conservation and monitoring bluebird nesting boxes. Let them show you around the vegetable and pollinator gardens that are planned,

PAGE 13

planted, maintained and harvested by the students.

Taste of England England’s climate and soil conditions are very different from Georgia’s clay soil and relentless heat and humidity. Developing a design and finding plants that recreate the loveliness of a traditional English garden requires research, discipline and experimentation. Master Gardener Bob Snider and his wife Pat accomplished this goal and created a welcoming and serene landscape to match their lovely home. Our Town Business Spotlight Elite Roofing of Georgia With over 20 years of hands on industry experience, Elite Roofing of Georgia provides superior customer service and outstanding work for each and every one of their customers. We recently got together with the folks at Elite Roofing of Georgia to get the ABC’s of roofing and the inside story on what makes them tick OTM: Can you describe your mission statement to Our Town readers?

OTM: How can Elite Roofing of Georgia help Our Town readers with insurance claims?

ERG: At Elite Roofing of Georgia, our mission is to serve our community with the most qualified workmanship and service. We strive to make lasting relationships with each customer by providing quality customer service and elevated levels of performance. With a high level of trust and respect, our goal is to continue to receive excellent ratings from residential and commercial customers alike. We utilize the latest technologies and best quality roofing products on the market.

ERG: We work closely with our customers who are involved with their insurance company. From the initial inspection to the final steps of closing the claim, we will be there to answer all of your questions. With high ratings and a trusted reputation with insurance companies, Elite Roofing of Georgia is a company that you will want assisting you.

OTM: What do you think sets Elite Roofing of Georgia apart from other roofing companies in the area? ERG: To begin with, we love what we do! We are extremely proud that we have been awarded the “Best of Home Advisors” for the last 4 years running (2013- 2016). In addition, we have an A+ rating with the BBB and over 200 real customer reviews on line.

OTM: What type of warranties and maintenance programs do you offer? ERG: As we mentioned before we offer a 10 Year No Leak Warranty on new roofs. In addition, we provide a 2 year No Leak Warranty on repairs, a GAF System Plus Warranty, and an option for GAF Master Elite Golden Pledge Warranty. OTM: What advice do you recommend to homeowners when choosing a roofing company?

We are an Owen’s Corning Preferred Contractor and also a GAF Master Elite Contractor. Only 2 % of the roofing contractors in the nation are Master Elite Contractors, evidence that their standards are very high. Companies must be in business for a minimum of 7 years and receive a 99% customer satisfaction rating based on independent surveys from GAF. GAF Master Elite Contractors must provide 1 million in general liability coverage, proper and valid workers compensation, a solid rating with the BBB, a good or better credit rating, no liens or judgments unresolved on record, and a good workmanship record. With the GAF certification, Elite Roofing of Georgia is able to provide a 10 year No Leak Warranty on all new roofs.

ERG: When selecting a roofing company, we recommend that homeowners visit the BBB site to check for negative reports, as well as, the Secretary of State’s site. We are also strong advocates of requesting a copy of the company’s business license and insurance certification with a follow up call to verify that they are current and still active. We encourage homeowners to get multiple estimates and choose a company that does not require a down payment. Lastly visit their office location and check their references.

OTM: Can you tell us about your staff ?

ERG: Elite Roofing of Georgia not only specializes in new residential and commercial roofing but we also do roof repairs, seamless gutters, gutter covers, wood repair/replacement, siding, decking, painting, and more.

ERG: Elite Roofing of Georgia is local and family owned with over 20 years of experience in the roofing business. We are all actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the business and are dedicated to providing our neighbors with the best service in the industry.

PAGE 16

OTM: We understand that a large portion of your business is providing commercial and residential roofing, but didn’t realize that you also offer other services. Can you detail those for us?

caregivers who are all working toward a singular goal— getting our patients back to their lives.” As one of only two hospitals to receive Joint Commission Gold Seal Disease-Specific Certification for these three areas, WellStar continues to show leadership in patient-centric cardiac care through innovative treatments, technologies and approaches. An example is the CardioMEMS™ device offered to stage three heart failure patients with frequent readmissions. This implantable device measures a patient’s pulmonary artery pressure and heart rate through a sensor that is implanted in pulmonary artery. This allows physicians to wirelessly manage heart failure. Coordinating care can be a challenge for patients, particularly those with multiple chronic illnesses. WellStar has created individualized clinics to develop care plans centered on the patient and the patient’s family, which acts as a support system. The care plans are developed by a multidisciplinary group to reduce the amount of follow-up appointments and streamline the access to multiple healthcare professionals through the Comprehensive Care Clinic and Structural Heart Clinic. WellStar Kennestone Hospital’s cardiac program is one of only two programs in the United States to receive the Joint Commission Gold Seal Disease-Specific Certification for Heart Valve, Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG) and Congestive Heart Failure. This means WellStar patients across the state have access to the highest levels of care, close to home.

The Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization that accredits and certifies nearly 21,000 healthcare organizations and programs in the United States. Joint Commission accreditation and certification is recognized nationwide as a symbol of quality that reflects an organizations commitment to meeting certain performance standards.

“Our unwavering focus on patient care sets WellStar apart from other health systems,” said Barry Mangel, M.D., chief cardiology officer at WellStar Health System. “We are able to provide excellent cardiac care that is making an impact on the health of our community. We have highly skilled physicians and

To receive this two-year certification, healthcare organizations must invite the Joint Commission teams to survey the desired programs and evaluate the clinical teams, processes and outcomes. To see the full list of certifications and accredited hospitals, visit www.jointcommission.org

Speech Patterns Each one of our children has had different timelines when it has come to developmental milestones. Our oldest was walking before her first birthday, while our third child was almost two before he decided to go bi-pedal. So it hasn’t been with too much stress that I have watched as our youngest has struggled in her speech abilities as pointing and grunting seemed to have served her well up to this point. Unfortunately, her mother sees it differently and has been working tirelessly trying to get little Phoebe’s vocabulary further up the evolutionary scale so that her communication with us is more than what one hears while visiting the “Monkey Experience” at Zoo Atlanta. She has been so successful with her that I wasn’t surprised when she asked me to sit down and listen while Phoebe annunciated the words that coincided her alphabet lesson that she had been working on that day. “That’s great!” I said after a few words, “H is for ‘HORSE’, very clear, understood it perfectly, but can we go back a few letters?” “To where?” my wife asked. “Let me hear ‘F’ again.”

• Beautiful bee-safe flowers, vegetable plants and seeds

“Okay,” she complied. “Phoebe, ‘F’ is for…?” “FOX!” She exclaimed. But it wasn’t really fox that she said. “Hon?” I politely pondered, “Are you hearing the same thing I am?”

• Natural and organic soils, amendments and fertilizers

“What?” she pushed back, “she is only two, the K-S combination is tough and you shouldn’t expect….”

• Grain free dog and cat food

“No, no,” I chimed, “she’s got the K-S thing down, I think it’s more about the A-W sound?”

• Backyard chicken supplies and expanded livestock feeds

“FOX!” Phoebe yelled again.

• Mother’s Day gifts for the bird and garden lover

My wife’s eyes widened and she looked back to Phoebe, “repeat that please?!”

• Open Monday - Saturday plus select Sundays in Spring

“FOX, FOX, FOX!” Again, not quite getting it right. I started to laugh while my wife began in earnest to attempt to get our precious little angel to sound out different words to attempt to correct the tiny error she had in her pronunciation.

NEIGHBORS FEED & SEED SUPPLY CO.

“Box, Rocks, FAWWWKS,” my wife implored. Phoebe answered, “BAWWKS, RAWWKS, F…..” Nope, missed it again. I thought this was hilarious and told my wife that I hoped they didn’t discuss the verse in Luke where Jesus told the Pharisees to go talk to a fox in her Bible class because her teachers might be surprised at her response. I can only describe the look my wife gave me as “miffed.” “Well, I can only guess where she must have heard that word Mr. Potty Mouth.” “ME!” I laughed incredulously. “I NEV…” she started, but then did a mental re-take and looked at me; a little less “miffed” this time. We laid it to rest knowing that just a few more lessons in phonetics would cure the problem. Another milestone, talking like a sailor…check!

Summer Decorating Summer is about relaxing and enjoying the season. From cooling interior color palettes to casual interiors, summer decor ideas are easy to incorporate into your home to take advantage of all the season has to offer.

FURNITURE:

Specializing in Orthodontics for Children & Adults

DRAPERIES:

When you want to bring in the cool night air, and keep out the hot summer sun use curtains instead of drapery. Drapery material is heavy and dark, while curtains paired with sheers can give you versatile flexibility in the summer months. If you prefer to savor the views, and not cover up the windows use valances. Valances in summer textures and colors will leave your windows looking finished, with an obstructed view.

Dark and muted tones are perfect for fall and winter, but spring and summer scream for light and airy colors. Use removable slipcovers, or decorative throws to bring bursts of color and brightness. Prefer whites and neutrals? White and khaki slipcovers are casual but can be dressed up with formal throw pillows in an instant.

BRING IN THE OUTDOORS:

When one thinks of summer it’s all about the feelings of the outdoors. Flowers, succulents, plants and fresh fruit centerpieces can make your home smell aromatic and look beautiful. For a more rustic feel, try bringing in eco-friendly materials like bamboo, hemp, and jute area rugs. These materials bring an exotic and natural feeling of the outdoors in. Remember, entertaining outdoors will also give a welcome break to being inside. Summer is about being flexible and spontaneous!

VIEWS:

What better way to welcome summer into your home, than looking at a breathtaking view? Maximize your furniture placement by facing it towards your best outdoor view, whether it is the pool, a lush green backyard or the ocean. Enjoyment of your home is based on your emotions. If opening windows to hear nature makes you feel good, do it! Don’t love the view from your windows? Consider buying a painting or wall decor that you love the look and feel of that makes you remember the best of summer days.

KID FRIENDLY:

Let’s face it, kids are out of school and summer time means kids around the house! Make sure fabrics and slipcovers are machine washable, and are casual and fun! Make summertime arts and crafts projects with seashells and nature inspired finds that the kids can pick out. Their projects can turn into summer décor that you display proudly around your home!

Summer decor is all about finding the right balance between enjoyment, relaxing, and livable interiors. Try these tips for your home and see if you don’t instantly feel like taking the day off to enjoy your summer home.

REAL ESTATE in OUR TOWN

HOW TO HANDLE BUYING WHEN INVENTORY IS LOW IN YOUR REAL ESTATE MARKET

Awesomeness baked fresh daily.

It’s that time of year when your quest for buying the right house may feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Don’t despair; we are here to help with some tips for buying in a low inventory market. • The first step is to make sure you select a qualified agent who is well connected with your market. She/he will know where to search, the best offers to make, of homes not yet on the market, etc. • Don’t wait too long. The house you looked at today and are thinking about tonight, is the house someone thought about yesterday and is buying today. Low inventory prompts buyers to move super quickly. • Offer a reasonably higher price for the house than other buyers. Come into the mix with your best and final offer to avoid wasting time, and to beat out the competition that may be waiting for counteroffers. Another possibility is to make a higher down payment, or offer more earnest money, to show your level of seriousness.

ONLINE ORDERING NOW AVAILABLE!

• Craft an effective offer letter. Many sellers are still somewhat attached to their home, and can be affected positively by a sweet letter letting them know why their home would be perfect for your family. • Be willing to compromise on closing dates and inspection dates. There could be a myriad of factors that are important to the seller. By tuning in to their needs, your offer may be the most desirable. • Landlords who may be currently renting out their homes may be interested in selling at this time. It doesn’t hurt to reach out to these folks - the timing may be right for both parties.

Every Mother’s Day, I think of the bond that I have with my son, the bond that I have with my mother, the bond she had with her mother, and so on. A Mother’s love is an incredible thing…unconditional. For me, the word unconditional is most often associated with dogs. After all, they are said to be the only thing on earth that loves you more than they love themselves. We understand that a dog’s attachment to you is fundamental to their overall well-being. They need it to truly live. Hmmm. As I consider the word unconditional, I am reminded of the countless relationships I have seen with people and their dogs. I’ve seen families united by a dog. I’ve seen people paralyzed with depression, find purpose in caring for a pup. I’ve seen dogs, who were abused and scared, become so happy with the love of a family that they literally bounce around, unable to contain themselves. I’ve seen children, struggling with developmental disabilities overcome insurmountable obstacles through a relationship with a dog. In short, I have seen thousands of people’s lives enriched because of their dogs and I have seen thousands of dog’s lives enriched because of their people!

PAGE 28

Dogs have been a part of my life for my entire life. Some people scoff at the idea of being a “mom” to a fur baby. But, I was mom to my first dog Maggie long before I was Mom to my son. When I rescued her, I promised that I would provide for her as long as she was alive. I loved her, kept her safe, taught her everything I could, played with her, laughed and cried with her. I had no idea how much she was preparing me, or how often I would look back on our relationship for guidance. Almost 17 years ago, I wrote down five things Maggie taught me. Today, these simple tips inform everything we do to help people and their pups have the kind of relationship they deserve.

1 Spend quality time together. 2 Provide for their health and wellness. 3 Show them what you want them to do and reward them when they do it. 4 Keep them physically and mentally exercised. 5 Have fun together! In preparing for this article, I reread these tips again and I printed them and put them on my note board - not as a reminder of what to do with my pups, but as a reminder of what to do with my son! Thank you, Maggie, for all you taught me and all that you continue to teach me. To all the moms out there, I hope this article makes you smile. I wish you the most wonderful day possible and I invite you to stop by K-9 Coach on Mother’s Day, May 14, and grab a rose from us. My name is Brodie and I am a very affectionate and sweet (Scottish Fold) boy. I have very small ears which is a trait of the Scottish Fold breed of cats and I have been told that I resemble an owl in the face. Often times, I will sit like a Buddha with my tail tucked up under me which is another trait of my breed. I love to find my way into the lap of anyone that I find sitting down and will take a short nap. I also enjoy eating on plants if I happen to find any within my reach which gets me in trouble. I really enjoy getting out on my deck when the weather is nice to enjoy the sun and bird watch and I am proud to call Smyrna my home.
