GUARANTEED PROGRAM WILL CONQUER YOUR SMOKING HABIT IN 7 DAYS

Have you tried to quit smoking but suffered horrendous withdrawal symptoms? That’s because withdrawal is the single most challenging obstacle in abstaining from cigarettes… But no matter how long or how much you’ve smoked, no matter how many programs you may have tried before, CIGAR-X, the 7-Day herbal program will help you beat the odds and QUIT SMOKING FOR GOOD. With this program we have an outstanding success rate of 95% with people who not only quit in just 7 days but never smoked a single day after using the program. These are a few genuine comments left by some of our clients: “The first time I started this program I wasn’t able to complete it due to medical issues so I decided to give it another try. I’m happy to say this worked exactly as advertised! I had absolutely no desire to smoke and I could tell it cleaned me out of that nicotine. Just wanted you to know this worked really well for me.” – J. North “I have been a cigarette smoker for 40 years. I tried cold turkey, the patch, gum and prescribed medications. I failed at all of them eventually... I saw a 7-day program at Red Carpet Pharmacy in Acworth. After discussing the money back guarantee, I decided, why not! What followed is difficult to put into words. I felt happy and relaxed. I did not have a thought of a cigarette. I never had a craving for a cigarette. It was absolutely amazing.” – M. Smith “I purchased the kit because I was anxious to try something that worked quickly. I was delighted by how amazing this stuff worked! From day one I had no desire to smoke...no jitters, anxiety – no nothing! I certainly didn’t mind the price tag either. It’s a small amount to pay when you think of the benefit.” – C. Houston “One year since I did this program still smoke free. Compared to all the different programs out there, I would have to say that this is the way to go.” – B. Washington

“My husband has been smoking since he was a teenager and he was up to almost 4 packs per day, so when I saw this program ad in the Marietta paper I had to tell him about it. We have been so excited about his success that we asked his doctor to start recommending your program to other patients.” – A. Davis Did you know there’s approximately a 72% chance you will fail at smoking cessation with OTC products and prescriptions? That’s because NONE of the conventional methods address the most difficult aspect of quitting: DETOXIFYING the body from nicotine to eliminate dependence. CIGAR-X is the first and only program to offer this benefit for smokers.

What makes our program work so well? • It works from day one, immediately eliminating your urge to smoke • It TRICKS your brain into thinking you are having a cigarette • It stamps out ANXIETY, AGITATION, NERVOUSNESS AND IRRITATION • It eliminates excruciating withdrawal symptoms • It CLEANSES your body • It grants LONG TERM success to those who are serious about quitting • It has NO SIDE EFFECTS Twenty minutes after you quit smoking your blood pressure begins to normalize, lung function improves within 2 weeks, shallow breathing clears in 1 month, heart disease risk DROPS by 50% in 1 year, stroke risk is reduced to a non-smoker in 5 years, and lung cancer risk is reduced by 50% in 10 years. Do you want these benefits for yourself or a loved one? Don’t put off this life changing decision! Your purchase is risk free. If after complete use, the CIGAR-X program doesn’t help you, simply return the empty bottles for a full refund. Yes, it’s GUARANTEED to help you quit or IT COSTS NOTHING! So don’t wait to become a statistic, start on the CIGAR-X program today. You have nothing to lose but your smoking habit. Are you ready to quit? Did you know that smokers have nearly the highest death rate in America? In fact, if you are a smoker over age 40, statistically speaking, SOMEONE WITH TERMINAL CANCER HAS A GREATER CHANCE OF SURVIVAL according to the Center for Disease Control. So if you want to dodge the bullet QUITTING SMOKING is a decision you don’t have time to think about. Why? Because, one American dies every 6 seconds from a tobacco related disease. And just ONE cigarette shortens the user’s lifespan by 11 minutes.

STYLE REPORT

by Tara Hanover

Happy New Year! It’s 2018 and I seriously cannot believe it because I can vividly remember 1998… like it was yesterday. The hairstyle was “The Rachel”. We used a crimper instead of a flat iron, scrunches were right on trend, necklaces were in the form of a choker and jelly shoes were all the rage. Why am I flashing back? I am glad you asked. This past holiday season was a whirlwind in my household between the presents, the parties and the performances. My husband and I had to divide and conquer. He’d go in one direction and I’d go in the other. Then we’d meet back at home and give each other the play-by-play of what each of us had missed. My husband made a very interesting observation at one of these events where he had to fly solo. I honestly don’t think that he knew that he had made such a fashion forward observation in his post party wrap up, but I noticed it right away.

The Leaders in Property Management

Here’s the story: My husband walked in the door and was telling me how I would have loved the party because it was full of people I knew. He started naming all of the guests and telling me about fun conversations…then IT happened. The next thing he said was, “There was one woman that told me to tell you hello, but I can’t remember her name”. He kept assuring me that I absolutely knew her, and he kept saying how likable she was. So in my excitement to know who it was, I asked him to describe her physically. *Here comes the “check yourself moment”. He said, “She has brown hair and is attractive. I think she is probably our age, BUT HER HAIRSTYLE MAKES HER LOOK OLDER.” I then asked if her hair needed to be colored thinking she possibly had a random grey strand running through it. He quickly said no, “I told you it was brown. He then said this. “She probably has the same hairstyle she had 20 years ago and just thinks it still looks good”. He was not being rude or judgmental at all...he was, in his mind, simply stating a fact. I was mortified. She probably thought if it worked then, it works now. Why fix what is not broken, right? Well, if my husband was making this naïve observation-WRONG! It is time to fix it. I think there are many instances where we keep with a certain style because it is comfortable whether it be a hairstyle, a pair of shoes or an outfit. Listen, I have a closet full of items I desperately need to donate. Items that I haven’t worn in YEARS and for some reason I cannot let them go. But honestly, even if it still fits or even if it USED to look great- change is good. I know that you are familiar with the sayings, “What’s old is new again” and “It all comes back around”. I agree with them… to a point, but one should take note when a style goes away and then comes back- it has a different feel. It may be a blast from the past, but it has definitely been updated. Curly curls came back as beachy waves, stirrup pants came back as leggings and off the shoulder crop tops came back as off the shoulder shirts that were long enough to cover your booty.

HERE IS MY ADVICE TO STAY COMFORTABLY CURRENT: • There is a difference in current vs. trendy…don’t buy a ton of trendy items. Keep a

majority of your items basic and add in trendy accents. • If you have not worn it in a year -donate it. • If you are unsure of a style ask an EXPERT’S opinion…not your friends. Your friends

love you and do not always tell you the truth. • When it comes to hair, don’t change everything at once. Try a new hair color or cut

but changing both at once can be too shocking. • You can tweak a style (hair or fashion) to give it a fresh look without completely chang-

ing the entire look. *Baby steps are OK,” Remember changing up your look should be a fun adventure…it’s not a tattoo. Do yourself a favor and don’t get stuck in a time warp, try something new. The worst thing that could happen is that you don’t like it, and you then try something else.

As always, everyday: Get up, dress up, show up and NEVER give up!

Make 2018 GREAT!!!!

No INdoor Voices Allowed

Many years ago, I had a philosophy professor who introduced to me the concept of “tabula rasa.” For those who aren’t familiar with this concept, it is the argument that when we are born into this world we come in as a ‘blank slate,’ or just a mental sponge awaiting to slurp up the spill of knowledge that will determine and define who we are. While this may seem like ‘stating the obvious,’ the argument, however, is that if this is the case then what role do parents and their genes play in this blank sponge; is it our ‘nature’ that determines us, or the ‘nurture’ that early influencers have on children that create us? I thought about this the other day when I asked my wife, “When did our 11-year-old learn sarcasm?”

Now Enrolling For the 2017-2018 School Year!

Sarcasm cannot be part of one’s genetic code. I cannot see where scientists will one day discover the DNA strand linked to snarky comments and the ability to re-state the obvious, but in such a way as to make it sound like you are doing it from a vantage point on a higher plane of existence. If our kids are truly ‘blank slates’ then the only place they could have gained access to sarcasm was from one, or both of their parents? And if that is the case, then this year, I must resolve to be less witty, less insightful and less astute. Or, as any entrepreneur of sarcasm will attest, less me.

The Little Gym of Smyrna thelittlegym.com/smyrnaga 770.434.6661

Sarcasm is broadly defined as mockery. But it is mockery clothed in a warm blanket of irony and feigned praise and is almost always verbal. The inflection of a perfectly timed sentence of, “No, no…on anyone one else that would look ridiculous, but on you? Purrrrfect.”

FACT:

Studies show that children who spend time in the garden develop a love for fruits and vegetables.

It is a powerful verbal weapon in anyone’s arsenal and is particularly dangerous in the hands of a pre-teen attempting to assert her independence from her parents. “Is that what you are wearing to church?” “No Dad, I am just using this outfit as a placeholder for the next round of clothes I am going to wear…geez.” “A simple ‘yes’ might have sufficed?” I replied. Like I said, it had to have come from somewhere and since my wife is truly awful at being indignant, duplicitous, supercilious and condescending I fear the arbiter of this behavior looks back at me in the mirror every morning. But from where did I gain this talent? If I already see the hints of it in my oldest child, then surely it must spring from something ‘coded’ in our being? A genetic propensity if you will and not an outright hard-wired physical attribute like hair, eye color etc… I thought about this for a long while, but then determined that none of this could be my fault and like any good child would do, decided to blame my parents.

BALANCED LEARNING® WAY:

That is why when my wife looked over at me at dinner one night when our oldest had commented on the meatloaf, “It’s not that it tastes bad, Mom,” she said, “it’s just that there are soooo many other things that taste much better,” I added, “Yep, sounds just like Nanna.”

Tech Dad

by James Floyd Kelly

In January 2017, I got a call from my bank regarding some unusual charges that had been made with my debit card over the Christmas holiday. A few of the charges were legit (gas for the car while we traveled) but a few of them were obviously not made by me, namely a couple of airline tickets purchased in the UK and some electronics purchased in California. Banks and credit cards companies have some amazing software these days that watch for strange spending habits, compare purchase dates/times (you can’t make a gasoline purchase in Georgia AND another in Texas within a few hours of each other), and predict expenditures based on historical info (such as a restaurant charge for your weekly Friday date night). That said, the software isn’t perfect, and anyone who uses a credit card or makes online purchases is bound to encounter a fraudulent charge at some point in their life. I use my debit card almost daily, and I’ve linked it to a number of online businesses to make buying things easier. Amazon, for example, stores my debit card information so I can use their convenient OneClick button. No more entering name, address, etc… I just click the One-Click button and my order is on its way. Amazon has done a good job of protecting my information, but hardly a month goes by these days when we’re not hearing about a security breach at Company X or Company Y, and it’s made me nervous when I think about how many companies I provide my card number to for purchases or recurring monthly subscription charges, and I’m especially nervous about online sites where I’ve made only one purchase and nothing more. If this kind of thing worries you, I’ve got a great recommendation for you to try. It’s called Privacy.com, and it’s 100% free to use. Here’s how it works. After creating an account, you provide Privacy.com with the credentials you need to login to your bank. From that point forward, you use the service to create two types of digital credit cards – Privacy and Burner.

STATE-OF-THE-ART CARE. CONVENIENT LOCATIONS.

A Privacy Card is created for a specific merchant. It cannot be used anywhere else. It can be configured with a spending limit (one-time or monthly), and it works anywhere Visa debit cards are accepted. If someone steals the number and tries to use it at another location, it won’t work. It’s locked to one vendor. If you have a recurring charge (a gym membership, for example), you create a Privacy Card, set it to a monthly limit (your gym’s monthly charge), and forget about it. A Burner Card can only be used once. You create the card, make your online purchase, and only a single charge can be made with the number. If someone takes the number and uses it again (even at the same vendor), it won’t work. Ever.

Both types of cards pull funds directly out of your bank account, and hundreds of financial institutions are supported. You don’t need to actually have a Visa debit card, just an account to link to your digital cards. You can create the cards using a web browser or (my favorite) with an app that’s available for iPhone and Android. The service is free because, just like regular credit cards, Privacy.com gets its fee from the credit card companies. Do keep in mind that each account that you link to does have a cumulative $1000/daily limit and a $2000/month limit for any Privacy Cards you create and link to that account. You’re limited to creating 12 cards (Privacy plus Burner) per day, as well. Using the phone app is so simple. If you’re attempting to buy something online or over the phone and are uncomfortable providing your real debit/credit card details, use the app to create a Burner Card that can ONLY be used with that vendor and ONLY one time. If you’re an Amazon user like me, create a Privacy Card and then go into your account and provide that Privacy Card number instead of your real credit/debit card.

THE SCIENCE OF BEAUTY 7 NIGHT TIME SKIN CARE TIPS TO GUARANTEE BEAUTIFUL SKIN by Eliana Ocheseanu With each passing year we become more aware of how important it is to keep our skin looking young and flawless. After all our skin is the true foundation under our makeup and if you keep your make-up simple, the condition of your skin will play a huge role in the complete look. Keep reading to find out what you need to do before you curl up in bed to get the most out of your beauty regimen.

1. Cleanse. Wash off the make-up and the grime of the day with a milky or oil based cleanser. This will break down your make-up and prepare the skin for your nighttime treatments 2. Tone. Unless your cleanser is PH balanced, spray a bit of toner all over your face and neck to restore your skin’s acidic PH. This will act as a protective barrier and help with product absorption. 3. Treat. If you’re treating stubborn acne, age spots, uneven texture or anything in between, then load up on your facial treatment products in the evening on freshly cleansed skin. Because the body is going in repair mode around our bedtime, these products will be under optimal conditions to work their best. 4. Apply Serums. Now that your skin has been cleansed, primed, and treated, you’ll want to apply your serum at this stage. Serums are products that contain very concentrated active ingredients, and usually come in smaller containers because a little bit goes a long way. Doing this on clean skin, but before any moisturizer or heavy creams, means those concentrated (and often expensive) ingredients will be able to penetrate the skin without any roadblocks.

PAGE 16

5. Apply Eye & Neck Treatments. The eye and neck areas are very delicate and easily damaged by intrinsic and extrinsic factors, so applying serums or creams to these areas now will prevent you from spending a lot of money later. 6. Mask yourself. Once or twice a week take your time to apply a hydrating mask. You can use an individual packaged cellulose mask or a gel mask applied in a thin layer, almost like a moisturizer. If possible go to sleep with your mask on. This will help keep your skin soft and smooth and give you nice glow the next day. 7. Seal everything under a moisturizer. Your nighttime moisturizers should be SPF free and rich in active ingredients such as antioxidants, collagen, retinol, or alpha hydroxyl acids. Your moisturizer will also provide the added benefit of locking in all the ingredients you previously layered under it, as well as some much-needed moisture. If you ever forget the exact order, don’t panic—a general rule of thumb is to simply apply your products in order of consistency, starting with the lightest, and ending with your heaviest or thickest product.

2018 BATHROOM TRENDSby Jaclyn Crawford While there are plenty of timeless elements you’ll need to include in your bathroom remodel, there are plenty of ways you can introduce the latest trends into your look. This year, there’s a focus on easy-to-clean and modern-looking bathrooms. “People are starting to realize just how much they can get out of their bathroom design,” Emily Hoefler, kitchen and bath specialist said. “With more functional storage and easier-to-clean items, bathrooms can work for homeowners more than ever now. With a little bit of smart design, a bathroom remodel can drastically improve your life.” Bathroom trends tend to stick around for some time, so don’t be afraid to try a few of these out if they pique your interest.

HERE’S WHAT’S TRENDING IN 2018 1. NAVY BATHROOM PAINT COLORS Did you see this one coming? Incorporating navy blue into the bathroom may surprise some, but the look will leave you loving your updated space. Navy blue compliments white and metallic accents, which are perfectly trendy in 2018. While neutrals are always a timeless style, a fresh coat of navy blue paint is just what you need to dress up your space.

2. RAINFALL SHOWER HEAD Relaxation is key to a tranquil bathroom; so naturally, a rainfall showerhead is a must-have in 2018. A rainfall showerhead is now one of the top-trending items for your bathroom. It’s an upgrade you won’t want to live without. The average cost of a luxury showerhead is between $150 and $250.

3. INDUSTRIAL LIGHTING Lighting can make a statement in your bathroom. While soft, spa-like lighting was once trendy, 2018 is bringing industrial lighting into the bathroom. It gives a rustic look, especially if paired with the trendy bathroom color of the year, navy blue. An upgrade in vanity lights is the perfect way to start incorporating this look into your bathroom

4. BIGGER NATURAL STONE TILES Subway tile has been the must-have look in trendy bathrooms, until now. As one of the trends this year is making a bathroom easier to clean, larger stone tile is taking over for bathroom tile trends in 2018. “I’ve been hearing the need for more easy-clean materials,” Hoefler said. “A lot of people are shying away from tile because they don’t want to be cleaning grout. If a homeowner does want to do tile, they’re opting for larger format tiles to reduce the amount of grout needed.”

5. WARM METAL FAUCETS & FIXTURES As an overall home trend, warm metals are hot this year. “One of my absolute favorite things that are becoming increasingly popular is warm metals,” Hoefler said. “Brass is back along with bronze, copper and even satin nickel for a softer take on the trend. For warm metals, my suggestion is to go bold. Pairing these metals with contrasting colors such as black or dark blue or even bright white is a great way to make them pop. And while I’m usually not one to shy away from mixing metals, I think it’s best to stick with one finish for this trend.” You can incorporate this trend into your bathroom by replacing your faucets and fixtures. It’s also a budget-friendly upgrade. The average cost to install or replace a faucet is $235, with most homeowners spending between $174 and $250.

6. BATHROOM TECHNOLOGY With every year, technology advances in almost every area of the home. The bathroom is no exception. One of the must-haves in 2018 is digital shower control, where you can get the right setting for the water temperature every time. While digital shower control is not new in 2018, the look of it is. The latest models are sleek and are easily disguised in your bathroom’s décor.

WHAT’S OUT IN 2018 As new trends emerge, old ones must go away. In 2017, we saw tranquil colors and white bathrooms at the top of the list. Now, that’s changing with deep, bold color taking over. Another item you will be seeing less of is the medicine cabinet. “People are opting for shower storage or linen closets with a larger square footage of storage over the few inches of depth one can get out of a medicine cabinet,” Hoefler said. Other trends that you can say goodbye to include: • • • • •

Subway Tile Backsplash Granite Bathroom Countertops Chrome Faucets & Fixtures Floral Patterns Oversized Bathtubs If you’re planning a bathroom remodel this year, these trends are a great place to start when determining décor.

New Year, SAME You! I don’t know about y’all, but when January approaches I start to see the phrase “New year, New you” everywhere! It’s in magazines, hashtags on social media, gyms, health facilities, and just about everywhere else. Don’t get me wrong, I totally understand the concept - January 1st is generally seen as a great time to become a “new” you. It’s an easy starting point to make the changes you’ve been trying to make for months and just haven’t gotten around to. BUT I will be honest that a majority of the time, I see people fall away from this within just a few weeks. Why? Well, becoming a new person is a pretty lofty goal. You’ve been you for 20, 30, 40, maybe even 50 years, so completely changing yourself won’t just happen magically happen in one day. What if this year instead of trying to become a new you, you committed to being a better you today than you were yesterday? To acknowledge the fact that you were created the way you are for a very specific reason; with gifts, talents, and qualities that make you special and set you apart from every other person on this planet. What if you made a decision to spend 2018 really focusing on the qualities you already possess that make you awesome and then building on those? Now I want to speak specifically to all my mama readers here: When it comes to managing marriage, mommying, and everything in between, it’s hard work. Some days it feels like I can hardly take care of myself much less my family! When you pair those challenging days with all the (seeming to be) perfection strewn across social media or you go to a girlfriend’s house and her kids are bathed and sitting calmly in her spotlessly clean house while she prepares a beautiful home-cooked meal, it’s easy to fall into the trap of ‘I failed as a mom today’ or ‘She’s such a better wife/mom than I am’ or ‘Why can’t I be just like her?’ Trust me, I get it. I’ve had my fair share of those days. But let me remind you of something… YOU ARE AMAZING! You definitely aren’t perfect, but you are amazing. There will never ever be another person exactly like you!! This year, instead of comparing myself to other women and focusing on what I don’t love about myself, the many things I could do better, or my “failures,” I am going to implement the following action steps to help me build on my strengths, recognize my accomplishments, and become a better me. I encourage you to do this with me! First, in a notebook or journal write down your five favorite qualities about yourself (e.g. You’re funny, you’re organized, you love to cook, etc.) Keep this notebook next to your bed.

NOW EVERY DAY IN 2018, DO THESE THREE THINGS: 1. As soon you wake up, pull out your notebook and reflect on those five qualities… How can you utilize at least one of those qualities that day to make someone else’s day better? (That someone else can be your spouse, your child, your neighbor, your co-worker, or even a stranger!) 2. In that same notebook each morning write down three things you are grateful for. 3. At the end of each day, in that same notebook, write down three things you accomplished during the day and/or three ways you felt successful. I am confident that by taking just a few minutes out of your day to complete these simple tasks, you will begin to appreciate yourself for all the fabulous reasons that make you you and 2018 will be your best year yet.

Happy New Year! :) Dr. Kimberly is a chiropractor, toxin-free living educator, natural mama, and co-owner of American Row House fitness studio in the Marietta Square. If you have comments, questions, or topic suggestions for Simply Thriving Mama, please email kimberlyhuckdc@gmail.com.

NEW YEAR!

TRAINING | LODGING | PLAYCARE | GROOMING | RETAIL

The Club at K-9 Coach by Amber Burckhalter Happy 2018! We hope that you and your family had a GREAT holiday season and that you’re excited about all that 2018 has to offer. We are! A few months ago, we wrote about growth and change in the canine profession. We discussed the evolution of care over the last several years. We revisited our nearly 20-year history of innovation in the field of canine care and training and we alluded to championing an even greater level of canine care for our clients and our community! While a well-exercised dog is an enjoyable companion for our families, the side-effects of unstructured, inexperienced group play can be vast and in some cases, damaging. Myself and other industry leaders have become increasingly aware of facilities and self-appointed canine experts doing more harm than good all while advertising the same services as others, but not offering the same level of knowledge, skill or care. Mainstream boarding and daycare practices, where companies put far too many dogs in far too large of play groups and ask inexperienced, hourly staff to essentially serve as lifeguards does not support our mission, nor does it meet the demand of care for the discriminating families we serve. We care for many dogs every day. They are all different and unique in their own way. Like you, your family, your children, these dogs have their own needs. We want to meet those completely and with the utmost attention to providing an enriching experience. Some of your pups are big. Some are small. Some are happy. Some are nervous. Some are just tiny fur balls of fun. Some have never

PAGE 20

been to group play before. Some come often. Some come with concerning stories and experiences from life outside of our canine camp. Regardless of their dog’s differences, our families want a well exercised, well cared for pup that leaves at the end of the day, or at the end of a long stay, healthier, happier and better than they arrived. The trust and support many of you have given K-9 Coach is nothing myself, nor my team, take lightly. This trust is the motivation behind the evolution of canine care we are unveiling. Now, in the spirit of the season: a new year, new opportunities, new possibilities… we are proud to unveil The Club at K-9 Coach. The Club at K-9 Coach is an exclusive, members-only club providing private access to incomparable care and lodging services at K-9 Coach. Membership includes comprehensive enrichment services so that every member can enjoy individual and customized experiences. Pup peer groups are very small (less than 10 dogs per) and include carefully structured training, enrichment, rest and exercise schedules that meet individual dog’s physical, mental and behavioral needs! Offering these select, limited, members-only programs means that members have peace of mind knowing that their pups are safe and healthy; that they are paired within small, similar groups of dogs that are companions to them, and enjoy the same activities; that they are more than just another dog or customer in the building; and that ALL the families and clients that come to K-9 Coach share the same vision and mission for their dogs! We invite you to follow us on Facebook, Instagram and our website over the next few months as we fully unveil the next generation of canine care and as K-9 Coach once again proudly innovates and creates the best for you and your pups. You do not want to miss this! Established by Certified Canine Behavioral Consultant and Certified Pet Dog Trainer, Amber Burckhalter, K-9 Coach is Atlanta’s ONLY complete canine experience, providing industry-leading: Training, Playcare, Lodging & Grooming. K-9 Coach has been recognized as the Cobb County Small Business of the Year/ Voted: Atlanta Magazine’s Best of Atlanta Dog Training, Boarding & Daycare, every year since 2008. Voted: Best of Smyrna/Vinings Doggy Daycare and an Angie’s List Super Service Award Winner every year since 2011.

STAYING MOTIVATED IN 2018 Getting to gym is the hardest part of working out. What do you do if you can’t find your motivation to lift? Keep reading... Ever feel the rush of motivation after you set a new goal? No matter how lofty, new goals often come with an overwhelming sense that you can take on the world. You’re refreshed and committed, ready to tackle anything that gets in your way! And then… life happens. Your motivation comes screeching to a halt, and your willpower takes a nose dive! Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to hop from point A to point B without hitting any motivation speed bumps? In reality, maintaining high motivation over the long term is hard. You will likely experience some lows along the way. What can you do? How can you keep your motivation going as strong as the day you started? First, you must understand how your habits impact your mindset. The habit loop consists of a cue or reminder, a routine, and a reward. For any habit you have it starts with something that reminds you to perform a behavior. Once reminded, you carry out the habit in a routine way in order to reach some type of reward.

Example 1: Your alarm goes off at 6:00 am for your morning workout (reminder). By 6:30am you’re at the gym for a tough workout (routine). After your workout, you move on with your day feeling energized and fantastic (reward)!

Example 2: You arrive home after a long day at work. You’re starving (reminder)! You immediately reach for any easy-access food in your pantry to nosh on, and easily over eat (routine). The immediate relief of having that snack acts as your reward, but afterward you feel awful. Where in this loop could you intervene to keep yourself on track? When you understand this loop and each individual component (reminder, routine, reward), you can address each with strategies to keep you mind aligned with your goals.

Strategy = Action We love doing and achieving. Developing strategies where we need them most helps keep us on track toward achieving what we set out to do. When you are mindful about your habits and behaviors, you can put effective strategies in place.

Dr. Meridith Long

Being mindful means you are aware of your thoughts, feelings, and actions. Take the time to “check in” with yourself so that you can better understand your needs, how you operate, and what you should do next. As you develop more self-awareness, your reminders, routines, and rewards become much clearer. When trying to figure out why your motivation just isn’t there, the very first next step is to stop and assess the situation before making any changes or giving up completely. Ask yourself the following questions to gain more insight.

- Do you have enough time to recover, feel good, and have productive training sessions? - Are YOU expecting too much from you? - Is your self-talk negative? - What’s your “why” factor for achieving the goal you set?

Check and Re-check Asking yourself some tough questions might provide insight that can help you stay motivated over the long term. Motivation and willpower will wane, and that’s totally normal. You don’t just set a goal and go. Motivations change. Even goals can change. Checking in with yourself and consistently re-evaluating your next will help you stay on track toward your goals.

IT’S A SELLER’S MARKET: THAT’S NOT STOPPING NEW HOMEBUYERS The housing market showcases the number of homes for sale in different areas, their prices, and the general leaning. There are two types of markets: The Seller’s Market and the Buyer’s Market. Saying that the market is a Seller’s Market usually means that prices are rising, there’s a shortage in inventory, and that houses are receiving multiple offers. A Buyer’s Market means that buyers have more control over the negotiation, prices are lowering, and that there’s a surplus of houses for sale. 2017 has ended in a Seller’s Market, and the trend in 2018 seems to follow suite. This isn’t stopping new home buyers and their participation is affecting the market. We’re actually seeing a unique trend emerging. While home prices are rising, buyers are experiencing an advantage in the form of interest rates. Mortgage rates this year are definitely on the low end. A 15-year home loan hovers around 3.2 percent, and a 30-year loan is around 3.9 percent. Furthermore, new home buyers are finding lenders who require less of a down payment. Low costs are opening the door to more affordable monthly payments, and this makes buying a home more feasible to many people. New home buyers however, have a different impact on the market than current homeowners. When an individual who owns a home buys a new one, they usually

PAGE 25

sell their old house. This creates market equilibrium. New home buyers do not have a previous home to sell, so they decrease the available inventory, causing prices to rise and the market to further shift into a Seller’s Market. While 2018 rolls into a Seller’s Market, the year will definitely bear benefits for both sides. Sellers will continue to see an increase in their home value, but buyers will have to act quickly. Right now mortgage rates have been consistently low, but lenders in the area are starting to see an increase they predict will continue. Buyers and investors should consider looking for potential homes now to take advantage of a low longterm rate. The first step to taking advantage of the current market is to contact your local realtor to get information about the current inventory, or if you are thinking of listing call to get a free market analysis for your home. Current homebuyers can also benefit and save time by using the same realtor to aid in both the buying of a new home, and the selling of their old home.
