Christmas Memories by Mark Orler I was going through some of my parent’s old photos and came across a desiccated Polaroid of a handsome young man standing amidst a pile of wrapping paper beside a Christmas tree in a red and black cowboy outfit pointing a silver cap-gun directly at the camera with a crooked grin across his face that said, “Go ahead, make my day.” Immediately I remembered that as one of my favorite Christmases as a young boy. I know this because as soon as I saw the photo I could describe in detail the iridescent-red cowboy shirt with white button snaps along the front and shoulder tassels that accompanied the jet-black pants with their shiny “pleather” fringes that ran up along the sides. Added to that was a black felt hat that had a braided chin strap for those windy days on the plains and a wide, silver belt buckle that was so big it forced the wearer to never bend at the waist. I distinctly remember walking around the living room that Christmas in 1971 purposely shifting my hips and shoulders so that the fringes and tassels would sweep back and forth across my legs and chest making that distinctive “schlap” sound that only true cowboys could fully appreciate as the repetitive noise that must have accompanied their long days on the cattle drives and which surely signaled doom to their adversaries as they whipped around to empty the contents of their six-shooters into the evil-doers of the wild and wooly West, “Swish, Schlap, BOOM!” Judging by the position I had taken in the photo, I must have just completed a signature “left-handed quick draw” from my holster as the gun was pointed stone-still in the frame while the tassels and fringes were a blur across my chest and legs in the photo not even having had the chance to make their final “schlap” before I had pulled the trigger.

As I sat there buried deep in the memory of that cold December in 1971, when a 5-year-old boy could dress like a groupie for the Village People, and yet have no self-consciousness whatsoever about the flamboyant outfit his was “swishing” around the house in, I asked my mother a question.

Conveniently located inside 285 near 75

“You know, for the life of me I can’t remember where I had seen that outfit and why I had asked for it for Christmas?” I asked.

“You didn’t,” She replied, “You had asked for a new bike but we couldn’t afford one and J. C. Penney had a clearance on those outfits because of some ‘dye’ or ‘choking’ issue.” That’s when it hit me, I wasn’t remembering my ‘favorite’ Christmas and I wasn’t ‘posing’ in the photo. I was stomping around in that “sissy” outfit all morning long shooting anything that moved because I was so ticked I hadn’t gotten what I wanted. That’s when my Dad chimed in with a laugh, “Yeah, that was my favorite Christmas, watching you swish and shoot at us all day long.” Stupid memories.

Abraham Lincoln once said, “Everybody likes a compliment”. Mark Twain also said, “I can live for 2 months on a good compliment”. Today we live in a culture where cyber compliments are given constantly through “likes” or “shares” but have you noticed that an actual verbal complement is hard to come by?

Specializing in:

My official job title is stylist, make-up artist, and host and beauty expert but do you know what I really am? I am a CONFIDENCE BUILDER! Anyone with YouTube can learn how to put on make-up or pull together an amazing outfit. But what I realized long ago was what people really need to help them feel confident, amazing and beautiful is a cheerleader. With all the pressures in life, the negativity, social media and this celebrity obsessed culture we live in, it’s easy to let it get to you and then you start comparing yourself to others...this is NEVER a good idea.

Giving someone a compliment will be the best gift you can give. It is a nice thing to do, people feel good about themselves and you will be lifting someone up. Things I have done is saying you look nice today and giving a smile. My motto is ‘even if you don’t like someone you don’t have to be friend’s, just give them a smile and walk away.’ Also, it’s easier to be kind then mean, and as the old saying said, “It is easier to make a smile then a frown’. To me compliments are more than saying something nice, they are a way to make a difference in someone’s life. When I get a compliment I feel good and you would too. If you want to do something nice, go give a compliment and brighten someone’s day.” I am so proud of her and her kind heart, she realizes what so many don’t...giving someone a compliment takes little time and no money, but can totally change someone’s life in a big way.

“Confidence is the secret to all beauty. It is the most beautiful accessory you could own”.

Classic Lashes Volume Lashes 3D Brows/Microblading Teeth Whitening

I read an article written by a career coach named Marcy Tewete. One of the points that she stresses throughout her training is, “teaching yourself to see the best in others and regularly complimenting them will give you the ability to see the best in yourself, as well”.

“It is not narcissistic to enjoy a compliment it is human nature.”

“There are many ways to help people in a community. You can do as little as holding a door for someone or as much as volunteering your time or giving money to people in need. To me there is one thing that we need to do more and   that is giving a compliment.

When I have a client in my chair, regardless if it is the President of the United States or the president of the PTA, my #1 job is to “create” confidence, make-up is just adding color. I love this statement, “Confidence, wear it like make-up”. That is the truth! There is not enough make-up nor name brand clothing that can cover someone’s insecurities.... be confident in yourself and help others. as well. I love girls who compliment other girls. Too many think it’s a competition. It’s just nice to be nice! I hope you have a merry, happy, beautiful and confident holiday season and I encourage you to give compliments. It will be the best gift you could give...and least expensive.

Tech Dad Technology is great for many reasons, and the monthly Tech Dad article wouldn’t be much use if I didn’t embrace it and find useful apps and tools to make my life easier and share with you. But sometimes... sometimes a tech solution isn’t always the best answer. Over the years, I’ve tried numerous TO DO apps on my phone and tablet to try and get a handle on my work and home life. I’ve had a bit more success with a digital calendar (specifically, Google Calendar), but a calendar isn’t really helpful when I’ve got a couple dozen tasks to do on a particular day. You know what my fallback solution has been for some time now? A simple #10 envelope. Each morning, I write down all the things I need to get done that day on the back of that envelope and I cross them out as I finish them. It’s low tech. Very low tech. But it works for me, and I have friends who also use a paper solution for their To Do lists. One problem I’ve had with the envelope, however, is that some days I don’t finish everything on that list; the next morning I add new items to the same envelope but when the envelope gets too full, I have to transfer unfinished items to a new envelope so I have more room. Another problem is I’ve lost many an envelope or had them accidentally tossed because they look like scrap paper. Yet another issue is that it’s not the most professional looking way to stay organized. But again... the To Do Envelope (TDE) works, and I’ve yet to find a better solution. Until now. Some of you may already have heard of the Bullet Journal; if so, I’m envious because I wish I’d known about it earlier this year when it started getting buzz. But that’s okay. I’m now a full-fledged user and proponent of the Bullet Journal, and I can tell you that it’s like the envelope solution but upgraded. I think of it as TDE 2.0. How does the Bullet Journal work? First, you really need to watch the video at bulletjournal.com. It’s not even 10 minutes long. But if you don’t have 10 minutes right now, let me summarize the general idea: you buy a durable journal and follow a simple system of organizing it to keep track of your To Do items, important events, and notes. There’s a simple notation system to indicate when a task is done, when a task should be “migrated” to an upcoming day in the same month or added to a Future Log where special To Do and Event items can be kept and not lost.

by James Floyd Kelly

There’s a little more to it, but in a nutshell... it’s like carrying around a bundle of envelopes but with a system for organizing, moving, and closing out tasks and events. Honestly, the video didn’t really convince me to give it a try - a friend did. I tried it for a few weeks and, to my surprise, I found myself using it more and more. I still have the tactile reward of X-ing out a completed task without the worry of forgetting or losing open tasks. Plus, the habit of keeping the Bullet Journal nearby at all times has helped me capture ideas and notes that would otherwise have been forgotten. Could a digital app of some sort do the same thing? Absolutely! But I work with technology constantly, and this non-digital solution is a change of pace that my brain sorely needs. The Bullet Journal isn’t for everyone, I’m sure. For some, it will likely be missing some specific need or feature. For others, it’s just another item to carry around in addition to phone, keys, etc. But I’m sold. The creator of the Bullet Journal concept, Ryder Carroll, has provided a number of resources to help users get trained on using the tool. You can find these recordings at http://bulletjournal.com/about/ along with articles from news sources that contain stories of other users and their Bullet Journals. Finally, check out this BuzzFeed article with 23 ideas for increasing the usefulness of your Bullet Joural - http://bzfd.it/25A1W6J James Floyd Kelly is a technology writer from Smyrna, Georgia who also teaches a variety of technology summer camps for kids. He and his wife have two young boys. James’ latest two books are Digital Engineering with Minecraft and The Ultimate iPad, published by Pearson. There’s nothing more satisfying than enjoying fresh, authentic Mexican food served with a Margarita made with the perfect twist of tequila, oranges and limes in a restaurant that feels like home. The folks at Zama Mexican Cuisine and Margarita Bar have achieved this ideal and fortunately for us all, it’s located in our own backyard. Zama dwells in West Village off of Atlanta Road in Smyrna and offers the ideal mix of flavor, entertainment, and culture. Located in the heart of Smyrna, Zama serves authentic Mexican cuisine prepared by recognized native Chef, Juan Mazariegos, providing the perfect combination of Tex Mex and Mexican roots integrated into every plate. Zama’s cuisine stands out because of the quality and freshness of their produce and meats. What diners do not see is the dedication that they take care to make every morning to prepare fresh foods for the daily fare. Their Margaritas are indeed the standard of freshness: Freshly squeezed oranges and limes will coax you into returning for more. Also on the menu are delicious non-alcoholic drinks and Aquas Frescas, refreshing fruit drinks. Owner, Juan Carlos Velasquez, has over 20 years of restaurant experience. Velasquez is known for being the “Margarita Creator” by adding that extra spice to every drink. General Manager, Tito Gonzalez, who has over 21years of experience directs the restaurant and staff with a special eye on customer satisfaction. They cordially invite you to dine with them to taste the difference that freshness makes. Juan Carlos Velasquez explains, “ Our mission statement is for all of our guests to have a great dining experience with us, and to feel that they are home at Zama.” This artistic environment with live music on Friday and Saturday evenings welcomes all guests in a warm atmosphere guaranteed to satisfy the most discriminating of tastes. Velasquez also adds, “We dedicate all of our efforts to make sure Zama is the perfect spot for any family gathering, business or social event.”

Chef Specialties

In addition to their full menu featuring fresh guacamole served tableside, and an outstanding selection of Authentic Mexican fare, Zama features a tantalizing selection of Chef Mazariegos’ specialties. Begin your meal with the Ceviche Trio, a mix of salmon and tilapia cooked in fresh lime juice, crushed tomatoes, red onions, fresh peppers, mango, and cilantro, garnished with fresh avocado. Zama’s Tortas Mexicanas gives you your choice of tasty brisket or pulled chicken stuffed with refried beans, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, jalapenos, and queso fresco mayo dressing with French fries on the side. If you’re in the mood for seafood, the Tropical Mango Salmon or Zama’s Tilapia and Shrimp will certainly satisfy your cravings. Both entrees are served with delicious Chipotle mashed potatoes. And to complete the perfect meal, finish with a warm rich chocolate brownie infused with coffee powder and topped with vanilla ice cream drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauce.

PRIVATE TRAINING OR GROUP “CROSS FIT” TRAINING? by Robert Dothard In last month’s IDEA Fitness Journal, a study of injury rates among Crossfit competitors revealed a shocking number - over 70% injuries in participants! If you search the web, you will find many sites including even higher injury rates. This is why I have based my training business on private training where the different fitness levels and goals of the individual can be accommodated. I also like how at Fit Family each workout prescription is tailored specifically to our clients. We have never experienced a client injury in our 10 years of existence. The choice is yours, but if you have not made a training choice yet, I would encourage you to please visit my website at www.robertdothard.com and enjoy my book as a free download. At Fit Family we care strongly enough about our clients the care they receive to provide free information that we believe will encourage the individual and their families.

Holiday / Puppy Season is Here! by Amber Burckhalter We are excited to celebrate this time of fellowship and fun with you, our clients. We look forward to the playful activity of the pups, as it gets cooler. We cherish the holiday cards we receive from you and we look forward to seeing you and your entire family as you drop off the pups and leave town for vacations. We enjoy the possibility of a rare snowfall and the subsequent snowball fetch sessions we have in our play yards! And, this time of year, we most certainly look forward to the influx of new puppies - little balls of flying fur who are in desperate need of training and socialization, trailed by new owners who are sleep deprived and a bit in shock as to how the cute little puppy became a Tasmanian devil! With that in mind, this month we highlight a few tips for successfully integrating new puppies, and adult dogs for that matter, into your home. PICKING THE RIGHT BREED - This is the first and most important step. A dog is a big commitment. Every family has their own needs, schedule, personality, space and time limitations, etc… You and your potential dog deserve a good fit and doing breed research on the front-end can help you avoid heartache and frustration down the road. There are some great resources for this online. Professional training companies, like K-9 Coach, will also usually offer a matchmaker service that examines your lifestyle, your ability to train and properly exercise your new friend, your budget and more to help you make the best decision for your family AND your pup. SETTING UP YOUR HOME – It’s time to puppy proof! Puppies are naturally very curious and, thus, get into trouble. Take the time to look at your home and remove any dangerous items such as cleaning materials, power cords, toys for children, food that is unsafe and more. Getting down on your hands and knees and looking around is helpful in getting a “pup’s eye view”! Having your children help with this process teaches them about keeping the new puppy safe and helps them embrace the new changes to your family routine. Finally, setting up for success involves investing in a quality crate, new toys and high-quality puppy food as well as setting up an appropriate amount of free space. Check out our retail area for products we have tried ourselves and recommend for our customer’s pups and, while you’re here, feel free to set-up a private lesson with one of our professional trainers to help set-up your home for success.

ries of puppy-specific services to help you and your puppy build a lifetime of happy memories together. For many customers, this will include a private lesson with us before they even bring puppy home. So, make sure to give us a call so we can discuss. VETERINARY CARE - The relationship with your vet is one of the most important relationships you will have during your puppy’s lifetime. Your vet can guide you on health decisions, remind you of vaccine due dates, teach you how to keep your puppy healthy and safe and be a source of support for you over the life of your dog. Make sure to visit your vet very soon after bringing your new pup home. Ask questions and have a health plan laid out with your veterinarian. This should include what to do in case of an emergency. If you need a recommendation for a vet, we are happy to refer you to one of our vet partners. Just give us a call. We look forward to seeing all the new puppies in the New Year. Remember, our off-leash puppy classes run year-round and you can start at ANY time once your puppy has received their second round of shots and up until they are 20 weeks of age. And, for those of you who may have missed this window or have an older pup, our Winter Quarter of all our classes will begin in January. So, make sure to visit us and sign-up now. During December, we are offering two specials to help customers have the relationship they deserve with their pups: • Purchase an unlimited 6 month, or annual playcare package and get a FREE Obedience Class Registration to keep or give as a gift. • Re-fur a Friend… Buy a Holiday Gift Card / Certificate for someone who is not currently a customer and receive a 10% discount on all retail purchases that day.

From our family to yours, Happy Holidays! Established by Certified Canine Behavioral Consultant and Certified Pet Dog Trainer, Amber Burckhalter, K-9 Coach is Atlanta’s ONLY complete canine experience, providing industry-leading: Training, Playcare, Lodging & Grooming.

TRAINING EARLY AND OFTEN - The lifespan of a dog can vary greatly with the average being 8 - 12 years, depending on the dog. It is important that you start training your puppy early and often to K-9 Coach has been recognized as the Cobb County Small Business of the Year/ Voted: Atlanta Magazine’s Best of Atlanta ensure a lifetime of happy memories together. Simple Decorating Projects to Give your Home Signature Style For a great tablescape, take a silver serving tray and tuck Christmas bulbs and greenery in to make a simple but elegant centerpiece. Turn holiday-theme scrapbooking papers into an inexpensive tabletop display. Cut and fold papers to create simple cone “trees” of different sizes. Secure seams with double-sided tape. For a dazzling effect, hang single-color ornaments tied with ribbon from a window near your table. Improvise a tiered cakes stand by placing an urn or vase upside down on a large plate and setting a smaller plate on the top.

“In Your Home Pet Sitting”

Tie wide ribbons around solid-color pillows as if they’re presents going under the tree. Place on chairs, sofas or beds for an instant spot of holiday color.

SIT-N-STAY

Beautify a birdbath by adding fresh greenery, a large red ball, red-painted pinecones and a bright bow to bring a festive look to the winter scenery. Place paper whites in a large compote or bowl. Cover the potting soil with mini ball ornaments in colors that coordinate with your holiday scheme. Celebrate the season’s simple joys by creating a free-flowing look on your mantle with natural materials: green apples, pinecones and long-needle evergreen branches. Turn surplus ornaments into an easy holiday display. Choose coordinating colors of ornaments in urns, vases, goblets and bowls of different sizes. Finish with bright green pine branches for a woodsy touch.

HOME MAINTENANCE TASKS TO PREPARE FOR WINTER Cold weather brings some unique problems and needs for your home. It’s important to have a checklist for the essentials that need to be done to prepare your home for the winter months. • Prevent pipes from freezing: This is one of the biggest concerns associated with cold temperatures and winter. • Replace furnace filters: Dirty filters hinder airflow, trap nasty bacteria and particles, and increase energy expenditure. Be sure to change them out every few months. • Insulate your water heater: Most water heaters are in unheated parts of homes. To save money and energy, wrap your water heater with an insulation blanket. • Find and repair drafty windows: Check for this by holding a candle in front of the potential gap. If the flame flickers while the candle is held still, then it’s probably affected by a draft coming from outside. There are various ways to go about fixing gaps- insulation film, draft snakes, weather stripping, caulking, or replacement windows. • Seal foundation cracks: To prevent your house from leaking heat, you can use expandable foam for those strangely shaped crevices. • Inspect your chimney: Call a professional chimney sweep if you plan to use your fireplace this winter. There’s a high chance that there is buildup in the fireplace if it’s been used at all in the past. • Reverse your ceiling fans: A clockwise direction pushes warm air back downward. • Protect plants: If there’s a threat of frost or snow, then protect your shrubs and plants with either burlap, or wooden A-frame structures. • Trim your trees: If there’s snow or ice afoot, then branches hanging over power lines or your roof can be dangerous. Trim these to be safe rather than sorry. • Prevent ice dams: Installing ice shields can stop these from occurring. • Take advantage of new thermostat technology: Smart thermostats can minimize your energy bill by setting the right temperatures when you know family members will be home. Make an appointment for an energy audit: This will help you to be informed and prepared for energy-saving techniques and sneaky energy-wasters.

December brings cookie exchanges, family get- togethers, and friends gathering to share the warmth of the holiday spirit. We think that there is nothing better to enjoy without guilt :) than a delicious sugar cookie topped with an even sweeter frosting. Merry Christmas and Bon Appetit!

The Best Rolled Sugar Cookies Best Tasting Sugar Cookie Icing Ingredients 1 ½ Cups butter, softened 2 cups white sugar 4 eggs 1-teaspoon vanilla extract 5 cups all-purpose flour 2- teaspoons baking powder 1-teaspoon salt In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder and salt. Cover and chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight). Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Roll out dough on floured surface ¼ to ½ inch thick. Cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven. Cool completely.

makes about 24 ounces (enough for 48 cookies) 6 cups powdered sugar ¼-½ cup whole milk ¼ cup light corn syrup 2- teaspoons almond extract gel food coloring (in desired colors) In the bowl of a standard mixer or an electric mixer combine sugar and ¼ cup milk. Mix until smooth. Add milk as needed to create a smooth mixture, one tablespoon at a time. Add corn syrup and almond extract. To decorate cookies, your outline icing should be the consistency of toothpaste; your flood icing should be the consistency of corn syrup. Add food coloring one drop at a time until desired color is reached. Pour into bottles, decorator bags or a cup. Keep unused icing sealed until ready to use.

Lights of LIFE was introduced by Life University in 1989 as a gift to the local community. Talk of the Lights of LIFE spread quickly, given the location, quality and low cost. As the most affordable holiday light show in the Southeast, the Lights of LIFE holiday light display has become a yearly tradition. Now nearly half a million spectators from the surrounding region cruise through the spectacularly illuminated campus annually! New displays are added, and the entire arrangement is unique each year. The 65 foot tall rendition of Santa and his sleigh is the tallest display in the Southeast.
