Genius 3D Mammography at WellStar detects 41% more invasive breast cancer A 3D mammogram at WellStar Cobb Women’s Imaging Center provides a series of detailed images of the breast, allowing doctors to better evaluate breast tissue layer by layer, making fine details more visible and cancer more detectable. Because of its clinically proven increase in accuracy, a 3D exam can help reduce false-positive callbacks for additional imaging by up to 40%, bringing increased peace of mind.

STYLE REPORT

by Tara Hanover

Happy August everyone! I hope that you all are enjoying your summer as much as I am! Being outside in the sun just makes me happy. I have a question for you. Do you think that happy people not only look better, but feel better as well? I think so…and so do many others...scientists, universities and the media. As a matter of fact, David Bowden wrote an article titled, “Look Good: How Your Style Strengthens Your Self Confidence”. He claims that one of the best, most immediate and effective ways to feel better on the inside is to look better on the outside. The article was quite lengthy but his 4 main facts were: 1. When you dress better you feel better about yourself. 2. As a natural consequence of feeling better, you project this positive feeling outward to other people. Essentially, you behave the way good-looking people behave: confidently.

The Leaders in Property Management

3. This leads people you encounter to think “He or she certainly acts like a good-looking guy or woman so he/she must be.” They then treat you like a good-looking person. 4. Being treated this way by others affirms your own positive feelings. Subconsciously you think, “I really must be good-looking because other people are treating me so.” Makes sense, right? Another amazing organization that believes in this concept is the National Cancer Society. They formed the “Look Good, Feel Better” Program in 1989. This is a program that helps people going though cancer learn how to take care of themselves (hair, skin and nails) during the process as it can wreak havoc on your body inside and out. Clearly they know doing someone’s hair or showing someone how to apply an eyebrow doesn’t take away the actual pain of cancer, but you’d be surprised at how it makes the process a bit easier and helps the patient not feel like a patient. You see looking good actually helps you feel better if only for a moment.

I was able to volunteer for the “Look Good, Feel Better” program years ago and it was an amazing process. Helping others feel good about themselves is THE MOST rewarding part about my job. Construction is commencing shortly on the Life University (LIFE) campus for a brand new, 99,000 square-foot campus housing and dining facility anticipated for completion by fall 2018. As part of the University’s 20/20 Vision established in 2006 by its Board of Trustees, this new facility will increase living, dining and recreational/leasure facilities to accommodate an anticipated growth in both undergraduate and graduate enrollment in the next few years. Also a part of the 2020 Vision strategic plan, the University’s goal is an enrollment of 3,000 undergraduate and 1,000 graduate students by 2020. LIFE Chancellor Guy Riekeman, D.C., made an announcement to University faculty, staff, students and alumni last week indicating that this facility project was set to proceed following a strong response by investors when the University offered their bonds for sale to the market. “Our interest rates we’ve been paying on our current bonds were reduced dramatically,” notes Dr. Riekeman on the bond sale. “Life U was recognized for its financial stewardship by the strong demand from the financial markets, and this is a testament to our vision for the future.” As part of construction for the new facility, approximately half of the old Commons buildings on the southeast side of Barclay Circle (South Cobb Dr. entrance) will be taken down. LIFE currently has one additional on-campus student housing facility (LIFE Village Retreat), as well as the main campus eatery (Socrates Café). The new facility is expected to accommodate approximately 362 students. In comparison, the LIFE Village Retreat currently accommodates 300 students. “This project, which is the first of three proposed, was over a year in planning and development,” explains LIFE Executive Vice President of Finance Bill Jarr. “It involved a great team who spent countless hours in an effort that will result in a pivotal moment for the University as it fulfills our Board’s directive to grow both our undergraduate and graduate student enrollments. My family enjoys dining out together, and we’re fortunate to not have to worry about accessibility when it comes to enjoying a meal at our favorite restaurants. Up to now, it’s never occurred to me to look at the eating establishments we frequent with a scrutinizing eye to determine how easy or difficult it might be to simply gain entrance, access the bathrooms, or find a seat for someone with canes or a walker or wheelchair. And then there are the various brick-and-mortar shops we visit. Just how easy or difficult is it for someone in a wheelchair, for example, to not only get in the front door, but also navigate aisles or get to a higher floor?

Fortunately, there’s an app that can help those who DO need this kind of information. It’s called AXS Map, and it’s a free app for mobile devices, as well as, a searchable online tool using a web browser. Users can search for businesses in their area using over a dozen categories (examples include hotels, fitness, and arts and entertainment) and read reviews that focus on accessibility. If this sounds incredible, it is! AXS Map is building a worldwide database that is built around the Google Places service, so it’s constantly being updated with new businesses and services. But the service needs our help. You see, the service depends on the public to review and rate businesses, and there are way more unreviewed locales than there are reviewed. But AXS Map has made it easy for all of us to help. You can help out by downloading the AXS Map app for your phone and registering. Once you’re registered (required to submit reviews), you’ll use the app to rate items such as the entryway -- 1 to 5 stars allow you to share whether the entrance is narrow, has multiple steps to climb and has no ramp (1 star) all the way to wide entrance, no steps, permanent ramp (5 stars). Bathrooms follow similar 1-5 star criteria, and you can even take photos and upload them to provide more details to those who can use this level of information. AXS Map has also made it easy for local neighborhoods to quickly get reviews made by allowing groups of individuals to join together for a Mapathon. A group is created, members join the group, and an event can be scheduled for folks to tackle a small section of a town or city all at once. Groups can compete and see how other groups are doing in terms of reviews submitted. There are no trophies or monetary rewards... but you can smile big knowing you’re helping to increase accessibility awareness. There’s a lot of work to do! Smyrna, Georgia, for example, has hundreds and hundreds of businesses waiting to be reviewed, and it’s very likely that you’ll be heading out to one or more of them today. Want to help? First, just visit axsmap.com and click the Join button. Provide your email address and create a password and you’re almost ready to go. (You can also register from your phone.) Next, download the free AXS Map app. After downloading the app, login with your email address and password and you’re ready to go. Finally, visit a restaurant or business. There’s no need to make a special trip -- just use the app when you find yourself at a favorite restaurant or shop. Search for the business in the app and take a moment to just rate the entrance. Click on the big yellow Add Review

Many have heard the phrase “there are no free lunches” uttered to them at one time or another in their lives. The saying is meant to explain the simple economic premise that one cannot receive any goods or services at zero cost. It is a warning to the doe-eyed youth that somewhere during any transaction where “free” is advertised, there are strings present that inevitably lead to some cost. A perfect example would be that “free” mini-computer you use to text your friends your every move. Never mind that the “free” phone was attached to a contract that locked you into a price structure that is higher-than-average and that any extensions over your “data limit” would be penalized at a monetary rate that would be the physical equivalent of a beating by a Roman Centurion. I re-learned this “lunch” lesson recently when I was talking to a friend of mine and happened to mention that even though my house is within spitting distance of a great fishing lake, I had never taken my children out because I lacked a boat. “Dude,” he replied, “I have an old Jon Boat I haven’t used in ten years that you are welcome to have if you want?” “Are you sure?” I asked.

Specializing in Orthodontics for Children & Adults

Then, I determined that the boat’s two seat posts were rusted through and I replaced them with brand new posts and mounts. Let’s just round that down to $50.00 in parts. Again, donated labor.

(770) 850-9119

Once I had that installed I took the kids for a brief trip on the lake and realized that big-fat daddy and big-fat battery stuck in the back of the boat tended to make the kids all roll downhill during water operations. So, I re-positioned the 60 lb. battery midway on the boat and redneck-engineered a reverse wiring harness to the transom so nobody would trip over exposed electrical wire while fishing…$100.00.

My friend didn’t have a trailer for the boat, so I purchased one off of Craig’s List for $300.00 because dragging it behind the minivan appeared to have an adverse effect on the hull. No big deal, still “free.”

However, when I attached the motor to the back of the boat, the wooden transom disintegrated into a cloud of dust and termite corpses so I had to add another $25.00 just in parts…I donated the labor.

“Wow, a free boat!” I thought.

Then I had to spend another $350.00 on an electric-trolling motor and massive battery because paddling is for idiots.

I also had to install five fishing-rod holders because none of the kids wanted to bait their own hooks, (worms are Icky!) and having them secure while untangling lines, re-baiting, distributing snacks and other fatherly duties became a necessity. Figure another cool $100.00. All totaled my “free” boat has cost me a frosty $1,000.00 and countless hours in the garage making repairs. But it’s all worth it, right? Let me just say that the first time I took all the kids out fishing, one threw their rod in the water and exclaimed they would never come back, another got a hook stuck to their leg and announced fishing was “too dang dangerous” and a third refused to wear their life jacket and has been banned from the boat until they get a better “attitude.” So as I go out on the lake by myself in my “1,000 dollar free boat” for a few hours just to justify the expenses to my wife I think, “Totally worth it!” Now if I can just find the lunch she packed for me.

Advice to the New Bride by Jen Bonn

After the fanfare from the wedding subsides and the bags are unpacked from the honeymoon, it is time to figure out how to make the new marriage prosper. New couples have to learn how to live together and combine two lives into one while still maintaining some individuality. Every new bride can use some advice, and although I am not an expert, I have gained some wisdom in thirty-seven years of marriage that I would like to share.

BE FLEXIBLE Be willing to change plans, try something new, go somewhere different, or meet someone new. Be open to new things and don’t be afraid of a little change. Living with someone is going to require give and take.

TALK BEHIND HIS BACK Talk behind his back, but make sure it is positive. Let people know what an amazing man you have. Save your complaints for your best friend or your mom.

SUPPORT EACH OTHER It is so sad to see two people tearing each other down while listing each other’s faults. Be each other’s best friends and be the one who is always there with support and unconditional love.

LET THINGS GO There are certain things that my husband does that drive me crazy, but if I brought up everything that annoys me, it would cause all sorts of issues. Let the small stuff go. Pick what your battles are and try to ignore the rest.

HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR This should probably be number one because it is so important. Laugh at your mistakes and try not to take life too seriously. Laughing together is the best medicine.

KEEP YOUR OWN INTERESTS Being married does not mean that you have to try to become someone else or be interested in the same things that your husband likes. Keep doing the things that you feel passionate about and share your experiences with your husband without expecting him to engage in them.

BE INTERESTED IN HIM Show an interest in your husband and really listen to what he says even when it’s something that you really might not understand why he likes it. Expect the same from him. Ask for his advice and make him feel that his opinions really matter to you.

There are so many little gestures to show that you love someone. It could be through food, helping with something, leaving a card, or just saying I love you. Show you care.

THINK BEFORE REACTING My husband sometimes says things that I interpret differently than what he actually meant. Before you react to something that was said, check for understanding. It is a good idea to take a few minutes before reacting to anything. Give yourself time to assess the situation.

COMMUNICATE You have to communicate in order to make a marriage work. Talk about what’s on your mind. What are your dreams, your needs, your opinions? Work out your differences, as well as, encouraging each other in your daily routine.

Quick and Easy Back-to-School Lunch Tips from CHOA Strong4Life A nutritious lunch can keep your kid’s engine running smoothly throughout the school day. Check out our top five lunch hacks—they’ll save time and money, plus give kids a boost just when they need it most.

Keep Everything Cool To keep a cold lunch cool, freeze a clean, wet sponge in a sealable plastic bag for an inexpensive ice pack. Or freeze a plastic water bottle (pour a little out first because it’ll expand) to keep lunch cool and give your child an ice-cold drink.

Make Mini-Meals Save money on those prepackaged mini-meals by making your own (healthier) version. Pack low-sodium deli meat turkey slices, reduced fat cheese, whole-grain crackers, grapes and baby carrots in a sectioned plastic container. Or give him a mini-pizza with mini whole-wheat pita, marinara sauce, part-skim mozzarella cheese, bell pepper strips and mandarin oranges. And don’t forget water to drink! Dr. Barry D. Cohen

Dr. Barry Cohen has been a respected Orthodontist in the Smyrna (Greater Atlanta) area since 1988 and is a Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. At Cohen Orthodontics we provide early (interceptive) treatment, comprehensive adolescent as well as adult orthodontic treatment with traditional appliances, metal and clear braces, and Invisalign for teens and adults. Our goal is to work with you every step of the way to ensure your treatment is as relaxed, convenient and rewarding as possible.

Quick and Quirky Quick, quirky and delicious! Packing a healthy lunch that tempts the taste buds is easier than you think. Here are a few of our favorite ready-to-go lunch ideas: Pack salads in tall plastic containers by layering a little dressing on the bottom, toppings in the middle, and lettuce or spinach on top. Just shake and eat! (Moms and dads love this one as much as the kids!) Keep a few grab-and-go lunches handy by freezing a few PB&Js. Here’s a helpful hint ... to keep bread from getting soggy, spread nut butter on both slices of bread, with jelly in the middle.

What to Pack? Keeping the right containers on hand makes packing lunch a breeze. Use small plastic containers or foil muffin tin liners to keep dips and sauces separate. For an easy reminder to pack a variety of foods, use a divided container. Feeling Fun and Festive

There’s nothing more special than an opportunity to add a little personality to your child’s lunch. And even though you won’t be there to see, you’ll love the idea of putting a smile on his face at lunchtime. Use cookie cutters to turn sandwiches, cheese, fruits and veggies into fun shapes. Draw a smiley face on a banana or orange peel. Or leave a special note for your child in his lunchbox. It’ll make his day.

REAL ESTATE in OUR TOWN

by Deb Ratchford

SELLING THE SEASON: HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HOUSE FOR FALL SALE As the temperatures drop, people relax, and kids go back to school, it’s time for more than just fall. While many people think that spring is the best time to sell their home, fall is just as viable as long as you know how to sell the season! Buyers don’t just look in the spring; people look for homes 365 days a year. Emphasizing your home’s seasonal amenities will help you sell your home anytime of the year. Be sure to get it on the market as it picks up after the slow end of summer! For homeowners looking to sell in August, it’s important to emphasize curb appeal and interior decorations that match the season: 1. KEEP YOUR LAWN IN SHAPE: Even as summer ends, that doesn’t mean your green grass has to end too! Take good care of your lawn and make sure you water it frequently, county permitting. Properly maintain your lawn by patching up any brown patches, keep the dog in the backyard, and rake frequently to keep falling leaves away. 2. TRANSITION TO A FALL GARDEN: As summer plants begin to wilt and fade, plant colorful fall flowers and plants, like mums, in their place. If you have the funds, consider planting trees that turn red rather than brown in the fall. 3. STAGE YOUR HOUSE’S EXTERIOR: Seasonal decorations can add to your curb appeal – pumpkins, tasteful wreaths, and tri-colored corn can augment the appearance of your home. Stay away from colorful, flashing lights and blow-up decorations; stick to decorations that appeal to the widest audience. For a personal touch, have the kids gather colorful fall leaves and make a wreath using clear glue, leaves, and a paper plate cut into a ring. 4. REPAIR OUTDOOR LIGHTING: Fall brings shorter days, which may lead to showings in the dark. Make sure outdoor lights are clean and in working order: broken, dirty lights will give prospective buyers a bad feeling before even stepping in the door. 5. DECORATE YOUR INTERIORS FOR FALL: You don’t need to overspend to get a few fall-colored decorations for your home. Exchange light, summer curtains for heavier winter fabrics and trade bright summer colors for more subdued autumn tones. Keeping your decor up-to-date will help the home feel current, stylish, and well maintained to potential homebuyers.

Capitalize on this beautiful time of year by consulting with a local Realtor and get a free market analysis to see where you may stand against comparable properties. A Real Estate agent can also suggest other items that need attention and should be addressed prior to listing your home. Rotten wood around windows, pressure washing, and further home staging are just a few items on the long list of things that a real estate agent can help take off your hands. Speak to a Realtor before staging and photographing your home, as they often have recommendations for vendors who can keep you from overspending, and who will help ensure you have a positive return on your investment.

FACT:

Social and emotional intelligence may be the most important determinant of a child’s future success.

Before listing your home in any season, be sure to de-clutter, pack away your off-season wardrobe, and depersonalize your home so that the space feels open and potential homebuyers can imagine themselves living there. Selling your home is a big decision, but packing up your emotions can be one of the most beneficial decisions you can make once you start the process. When it comes to choosing a Realtor, it is imperative that you find someone familiar with the area. Make sure that your Realtor has a good reputation and a good marketing plan that will help sell your home. If you are considering the “For Sale by Owner” process, you might want to reconsider. Are you are familiar with the markets? Do you know how to find and handle prospective buyers? Do you understand all the legal aspects of selling a home? If you answered “no” to any of those questions, you may not get the best price for your home on your own. A Realtor can help take your home-selling process from exhausting to easy. When the Kids Go Back to School by Amber Burckhalter I am amazed at how fast the summer goes by. It feels like yesterday that I was picking up my son from his last day of school and we were excited about camp, vacation and sleeping in a little bit. Then, before I know it, we are working out carpool schedules, picking after school clubs and measuring for uniforms. Whew! In all the hustle and bustle, I begin to change not only our routine but that of our pups as well. Once everyone goes off to school, some pups can become depressed, bored or destructive. This month, we focus on preparing your dog for back to school time! • Set and follow a daily routine with your pup that works for your school year lifestyle. The schedule should include feeding, walks to one spot for housebreaking, walks off the property for socialization and appropriate play at approximately the same time every day. Establishing a routine your pet can depend on will help them weather any changes that may occur, prevent anxiety and destructive behaviors while you are away. • Save a special toy that your pet really loves and give it to them just before you are ready to go out. Put it away again once you come home. You want it to remains “special” for them so that it occupies their focus and attention some when you leave. K-9 Coach carries a variety of interactive toys that help stimulate your pup’s brain while reducing their focus on being alone. Check out our retail store for suggestions! • Plan fun after-school activities for your pup to do! We are all ready to relax a bit when we get home. However, for many families, the pup has been home alone all day and has loads of energy to burn. Take a walk or hike, play fetch or hide and seek with a toy or spend some time teaching fun tricks. Having a plan to handle the physical and mental needs of you dog will help everyone settle into the school year routine. • A few days of pup play and activity a week can really negate those back to school blues from developing. Join our pack now to prepare for the busy school year. Visits to our playcare can help burn off extra energy and keep your pup well exercised. Does your

PAGE 20

dog love to swim, play fetch or need a brush up on manners? Ask about our private activities as an addition to standard playcare. • While the kiddos are in school and learning, why not use that time to brush up on basic obedience or try out a fun sport with your dog? We also hope your school year is filled with excitement, fun and friendship! Make sure you see our class calendar for Agility for Fun, Nosework, basic to advanced obedience and more. We offer classes during the daytime, evenings and weekends 7 days a week. Give us a call and we can help set you and your pup on the path to success.

We at K-9 Coach hope your school year is filled with excitement, fun and friendship. Sign up for our classes online, or pay us a visit, and we will help make sure you and your pup thrive during this back to school season. We look forward to seeing you and your families soon! august pets of the month Pippi and Moose were adopted from a local rescue and couldn’t be any sweeter!  Pippi has about ten teeth but loves carrying her toys around.  Moose doesn’t let the fact he has one eye get in the way of patrolling the backyard!  They love dog ice cream and being the local neighborhood watch!  You can even keep up with their shenanigans because they have their very own Instagram account-@pippiandthepirate

My name is Timothy, I am a 7 1/2 Year old King Charles Cavalier Spaniel and my color is called ‘Ruby.’ My Nana adopted me 4 years ago. I love my home in Smyrna and my Nana takes good care of me.  I think every one who comes to see us, comes just to love on me.
