OPEN MIC NIGHT AT REV COFFEE: You're invited to play your music every Wednesday night in an open mic forum in front of a cozy, supportive crowd. Performers are encouraged to bring their own instruments however, partly in due to Rev’s community atmosphere, but mostly due to the friendliness of our fellow Rev-goers, just because you forgot your instrument doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be able to play. A musician sign-up board will be set up near the coffee counter, so you’ll know when you’re up. Though a lot of the music played at Rev is acoustic, don’t be afraid to crank up the dial. People can read the newspaper and play chess between 8:00am-8:00pm. The hours of 8:00pm-10:00pm are for music. No purchases are necessary. But we hear caffeine is good for dexterity and teas are great way to warm up your vocal chords. www.revcoffee.com 1680 Spring Road SE, Smyrna.

Lamont and Kimberly love Cobb County and have lived in the area since they married 14 years ago. For the last 7 years, they have called the Mableton/Smyrna area home. Lamont is originally from Philadelphia, PA, and Kimberly is originally from Memphis, TN. They have one handsome and super fun son, Asher, who recently celebrated his very first birthday. Asher has expanded their love for all Smyrna has to offer by celebrating his 1st birthday with a party at Cobb Park, one of the great recreational park venues in Smyrna. Asher is also enjoying his very first music class, Mini-Mozarts, at The Music Studio at Vinings. Kimberly works as Director of Hospital Coding Assurance at Wellstar Health System, and Lamont works as Network Administrator for Spelman College. The Bryants love their neighborhood and the closeness of the community. They have easy access to everything they do: work, church, family, and shopping. The Bryants chose Cobb County because of the safe community to raise children, activities in which they can be involved as a family, and easy access to downtown.

Some Unexpected News by Mark Orler

There’s snowthing like reading...

My wife told me a funny joke the other day and it went something like this, “Knock, knock.” “Okay, who’s there?” “I’m pregnant.” Wait, did I say “funny,” because what I meant to say was frighteningly hilarious! As in I couldn’t pick myself up off the floor I was laughing/crying so hard? I can’t remember all the details, because quite honestly it got real fuzzy before I blacked out, but I vaguely recall seeing something in her hand as my knees buckled and I began to fall that had two happy Plus-Signs that were 99.9999% positive that we were going to welcome another child into our lives in 2013. And I even think that one of the little signs winked at me as if to say, “see that, you are not too old.” In my semi-dream state on the foyer floor, while our dog was licking my ears in an attempt to bring me back to the world of the living, I vaguely recalled the previous reactions to this type of news and how different the responses had been. With our first child there were jubilant shouts, tears of joy and prideful pats on the back when we knew that we were going to be blessed with a baby. With our second child there were hearty salutations, misty eyes and supportive hugs at the thought of being given the opportunity to expand our loving threesome by one. With the third there were muted congratulations, dry-eyes staring back over crossed arms saying, “okaaaay, you are good with three….right?” And as I lay there in my mystical state of unconsciousness, with my ears soaked in dog-slobber, I smiled at the image of God and his Angels shouting with glee and streaming tears of joy at the thought of blessing our family with another soul, and that surely there would be a reality show in our future to help defray the costs of all these blessings that God had heaped upon our union.

OPEN HOUSE January 24th February 7th March 7th Educating Christian families since 1975

Visions of overcrowded Minivans, multi-tiered bunk-beds and waves upon waves of diapers, wipes and runny noses crowded my thoughts to the point that I could barely hear my wife through the cacophony of images and sounds saying, “get up mister, it’s not like you have to do anything for the next nine months.” And there it was, through all my self-centered whimpering and wining I had forgotten to see the unabashed joy that was on the face of the person who was truly going to bear the brunt of this little miracle. I separated my face from the tongue of my dog and rose from the floor to give her a long reassuring hug letting her know that we were together in this and that if God saw fit to add to our number then he surely must see something in us that we don’t, but that maybe we should. In conclusion, as we enter into a New Year of promise, expectation, commitment and birth, we should resolve not to neglect those who stand beside, behind and in front of us when needed. Even when they literally floor you with unexpected news, no joke! Mark Orler is a full-time husband, father and part-time observationist. Mark can be reached at mlorler@yahoo.com

The Trauma and Challenge of Surviving Marital Infidelity by Leisa A. Bailey, Ph.D. Recent news headlines expose the stories of powerful people experiencing marital infidelity. General David Petraeus is the most recent in a long list of the famous (presidents, political candidates, clergy, entertainment and sports stars), which face the challenge of healing marriages after the trauma of marital betrayal. Of course, infidelity is not exclusive to the rich and famous, and each instance leaves a marriage haunted with questions of why and how to heal. While this may be uncomfortable, it is important to confront the denial that “it could never happen to us”. It feels safer to assume that only bad people have affairs or only people in bad relationships. The truth is that without a commitment to ongoing open communication about needs, desires, fears, and disappointments, any marriage can be vulnerable to infidelity.

states the 75-80 percent of those who are willing to commit to improving the quality of the marital relationship achieves better marriages. There are specific recommendations to couples struggling with the overwhelming aftermath of betrayal. • Survive. Take good care of yourself. Don’t look to alcohol, medications, or food for comfort. • Don’t judge yourself for your choice to stay in the marriage. Everyone is sure their responses to difficulties until they are faced with the issues. When it’s your marriage, your kids, and your home, many people decide to try to save the marriage. • Don’t judge yourself harshly if your early reactions are messy. Learning about betrayal is devastating.

Dr. Don-David Lusterman, a psychologist and author of “Infidelity: A Survival Guide” who has studied relationship betrayal identifies different categories of infidelity. Chronic infidelity involves a recurrent pattern of betrayal. These individuals tend to require many conquests and often have personality issues; as opposed to an affair being the result of marital issues. Those who aren’t chronic betrayers may be susceptible to an affair because they are not aware that something is lacking in the marriage and get caught up in the excitement of the affair without awareness of the impact their actions will have until too late. Most infidelity occurs when good people find themselves in situations where loyalty and reason are overwhelmed by powerful emotions.

• Be open. This is a time for honesty. Knowing what has happened is an important part of unraveling deception. Questions should be answered honestly and completely. However, this does not imply that every “gory detail” should be disclosed and discussed.

Research by M. Gary Neuman, author of “The Truth about Cheating” has shown that people cheat for emotional, physical or circumstantial reasons. However, most times infidelity is not about sex. He found that 8 percent of cheating men said that sexual dissatisfaction at home contributed to their cheating, while 48 percent said the primary reason had to do with emotional dissatisfaction in the marriage. Neuman states: “We focus on the sex when we should focus on letting the emotional energy glow outside the marriage. The sex is just a symptom of taking the emotional connection further.”

• Avoid humiliating your partner. At some point you have to decide whether you want revenge or a relationship. You can’t have both – at least not for very long.

Couples’ therapists find that the most important predictor of healing after an affair is the capacity for both members of the couple to take some responsibility for what happened. This can be difficult if you are the person who was betrayed. Yet it is a step that must be taken if the relationship is to be saved. While the person who strayed in 100 percent responsible for their behavior; the marriage relationship is a shared responsibility. If the betrayed partner decides to stay, Dr. Lusterman believes marriages can survive an affair. Lusterman

• Find good help. Find a well-trained couples therapist to assist in the development of better communication skills. • Strive to forgive. However, this is not an easy step and it can’t be done quickly. Both partners need great patience.

• Isolate the times when you talk about the betrayal, and make sure there are positive couple distractions to remind why you want to be with your spouse. Rebuilding trust is difficult and takes time. However, trust and forgiveness isn’t just essential to relationships; it’s necessary for a happy, meaningful life. Dr. Bailey is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with a private practice in Marietta. BELIZE IT OR NOT!

Over the years, I have sent many people to the small Central American Country of Belize. Who can resist the attraction of the Blue Hole or the many reefs that surround this little gem? Back then, I had no idea that this little often missed semi- Caribbean gem had so much more to offer.

Always interested in Mayan ruins, I was fascinated to learn of the discovery of El Caracol, the newest in the chain of over 2000 Mayan cities discovered in Central America. Located in the Cayo district near the border with Guatemala, Caracol is one of at least 8 ancient Mayan complexes within this tiny country.

Fun Family Atmosphere!

3 $ 00 5OFF

From the coast my guide drove west on the Hummingbird Highway (one of the only paved roads in the country) for about 3 hours. A quick left tum on a dirt road and what seemed like hours over muddy and deeply rutted roads, we came to the ancient Mayan ruins of Caracol. Interesting though they were…..my mind was boggled by the experience of the bumpy roads. There were also signposts that we had to pick up a police escort due to armed highway bandits robbing tourists along the way. Although my guide said that it had been several months since that had been happening, I was actually glad we made this a quick stop. Then back over the dirt roads to the Hummingbird Highway again. In any case, somewhat disappointed, we headed back to the coast at Punta Gorda on the southern tip of Belize and Belcampo Belize. Once called Machaca Lodge, this revamped resort in the jungle is now called Belcampo Belize. This special 12 room eco-lodge is a sustainably- managed 3000 acre farm surrounded by 12,000 acres of intact rainforest. The new owners will soon open an agritourism center with hands-on learning experiences in the production of chocolate, rum, coffee and spices. When all is said and done, there will be classes on growing things, cooking things and producing things to be selfsustaining in this climate. These aren’t the only activities available. I spent an entire day with a Mayan family in their village to see how they cooked, washed their clothes and lived. Then I hiked past streams and beautiful waterfalls to a huge cave that we could even swim in. The hotel provides head lamps and life jackets for the swim, but be sure to take your water shoes along with your towel as the trek up and over the rocks at the edge of the cave is difficult. But what a great adventure! There are loads of adventures at Belcampo. Their small cable car takes you down to the dock and their boat which can take you on a nighttime jungle visit to perhaps see a jaguar or other nocturnal animals. They are also proud to play a part in the conservation of the marine life as they are located in one of the most spectacular marine environments on the Belizean reef system. You can also take the boat out to any of the small islands nearby for fishing, snorkeling or diving. Staff goes with you so if you catch something good, they will cook your fish or lobster or whatever you want right on the beach.

Individualized Care for Children & Adults

Services that are most popular include haircuts and color for women and men, though many clients add facial waxing to their service. For women, Radius provides a complete array of color services, from Dimensional Highlights to Single Process Color : Dimensional Highlights are highlights that have more than just one color and are placed evenly and subtly throughout your hair. Radius clients who are professionals commonly use this application because of the natural, polished look it provides. Dimensional highlights are also used for color enhancements that accentuate a style or personal feature. The application and formulation of dimensional highlights to fit a person’s attributes are what really matters, and Radius has this figured out. No guesswork. Single process color application is routinely used for gray coverage as well as for keeping blondes and reds bright. Want to go from blonde to red without that “pink not even color look”, or go from blonde to brown without that “muddy, green look” – Radius can do it --- every time, no problem, and within the same time as a regular appointment. This is what makes Radius a hidden gem in this area. Coming from another salon? Matching colors from other salons, or changing colors, are done on a consistent and regular basis. A common misconception is that prior color formulas are necessary to achieve the look you previously had, or for something you would like to recreate. Be assured that Radius stylists, with their thorough knowledge of color can work with the color you have on your head to formulate the color you want on your head. Color formulas are derived from both your consultation with a Radius stylist and their ability to achieve results. Whether it’s a change, or maintaining your original palette, the outcome will reflect what you want your look to be. When you think color, think of Radius Salon. Women’s haircuts are approached with precision and will grow out beautifully. Being able to maintain your look at home is important, and to enable this, stylists will assist with techniques and products that help recreate the salon look you leave with. Always watching out for new trends helps for suggestions that can define your look. Maintaining the same look you already have is okay too!

Men’s cuts are a specialty providing a refined look that will wear nicely over time. Men often come in between cuts for complimentary neck trims.

Many clients find their way to Radius via Buckhead. Having fewer options in years’ past meant having to travel downtown for a professional look. Relieved to find a convenient place that offers high quality service in an atmosphere that is relaxing and inviting, Radius clients are happy with their new found timing for hair services.

Beautify Your 2013 Kick-Start the New Year with a Plan for Your Home by Meredith Warnock, RID The start of the New Year brings a blank canvas, ripe with opportunity for something new, something better or a renewed perspective. It’s an optimistic view that this year, this day, this moment has the potential to be even better than the previous year, day or moment. I apply this excitement every year to determine my own list of things to reinvigorate my focus and I can’t help but notice that a renewed focus on my own surroundings always tip-toes onto my list. So, every January, I set out to organize my plan on how to freshly beautify my own surroundings. These are a few tricks of the trade to tackle a large project, make better use of what you have and add new elements to your home throughout 2013.

Draft a Plan for the Year If this is the year you have a big project for your house planned, break it up into manageable tasks over the next 12-months. It is easier on your wallet and makes the project seem much less overwhelming. Plus, once something is on your calendar, it is much harder to overlook. Thus, you won’t be starting 2014 with the same to-do list.

By Room or By Group If your project list is lengthy, break it up by focusing on one room at a time or by group of similar items. For example, if lighting earns high marks in your list of priorities, tackle the lighting for the areas of your house all at once. You will save money since you won’t need multiple trips for the electrician as well.

Image above: How to implement a big project in manageable increments throughout the year.

Quarterly Purchase Nothing adds a little sparkle to your space like a new piece of art or furniture. Set a goal to add one new decor piece to your home per quarter this year. The new addition will lift the tiredness of your space and give you something more to look forward to with each passing season.

Rearrange & Re-purpose

Point of Entry Once the wreath is put away and the outdoor Holiday lights are gone, the front door can look a little lonely. Spend a day freshening its look by adding a new door mat, new urns with season-appropriate plants, new lighting, a chic door-knocker and a new door knob. If you want to take it an easy step further, paint your door a new color. The fresh coat of paint and the new “trimmings” will do wonders for your curb appeal!

When was the last time you rearranged your bedroom? If, where the furniture hit the floor originally is where it still stands today, you may benefit from a little rearranging in your room. Also, look at furniture pieces you have throughout your home and reevaluate how to mix them up by placing in different rooms. A fun side table that is past its prime in your living room may be the perfect element as a bedside table in a tired guest bedroom.

OUR TOWN’S VERY OWN WINS PRESIDENT’S AWARD Primrose School of Smyrna West Recognized for Exceptional Early Childhood Education and Child Care Services Nearly two and a half years ago, Susan and David Hebert opened Primrose School of Smyrna West with the vision of delivering the best and most trusted early childhood education and child care services for Smyrna families. Recently, the Hebert’s were selected out of more than 240 Primrose Schools as National President’s Award winners for their passion, professionalism and commitment to the Smyrna community. “We were pleased to be recognized not only for our efforts, but for the hard work of our staff and our partnership with parents and the Smyrna community to ensure high-quality early education for the children who attend our school,” said Hebert. Despite a difficult economy, the Hebert’s quickly grew the Primrose School of Smyrna West to full capacity with a waitlist for every classroom. Their school serves as one of eight training facilities nationwide for new franchise owners, and the Hebert’s are often part of pilot programs, embracing new initiatives like the Healthy Bodies, Healthy Menu items program. Hebert credits much of their success to the education department at Primrose Schools and the incredible devotion they have to giving families the best child care possible. Annually, Primrose Schools recognizes top-notch franchise owners from across the country with the President’s Award. Selected schools exemplify excellence in Primrose Schools’ rigorous Standard of Excellence Accreditation evaluation. It is because of the hard work of franchise owners like the Hebert’s that Primrose students attain a significantly higher overall level of mastery of school readiness concepts, and in most cases, twice the level of their normative peer group. Jo Kirchner, President and CEO of Primrose Schools, presented the Hebert’s with the award during the company’s National Conference in Atlanta, GA. “Susan and David understand how important it is to help provide peace of mind and balance in the lives of families in the Smyrna area,” said Kirchner. “Everyday they provide a fun, safe and loving environment where children can develop Active Minds, Healthy Bodies and Happy Hearts. This award is simply a testament of their leadership and personal commitment to early childhood education.” Primrose School of Smyrna West provides area families with a unique balance of academics, play and character development, for children ages six weeks to 5 years old. The Real Estate Market by Deborah Ratchford

HAPPY NEW YEAR! HAPPY NEW HOME! The holidays are over and the New Year’s resolutions are upon us. Most people have resolutions about their physical health which is great! But, what about a fiscal resolution? You may want to consider a resolution to take more control of the opportunities presented to you. If so, now may be the perfect time to “run” the numbers on your home and “exercise” your right to “move”. Yes, these statements include quite a few puns, but, seriously, it’s a great time to take advantage of low interest rates, low inventory and put your home on the market. Please see the most recent real estate statistics from my independent research group. It is telling a really great story for families who have been waiting for the perfect time to sell their current house and look for their next dream home. Let’s talk about some facts that may identify now as your opportunity. First, this chart demonstrates how median sale prices for homeowners have risen sharply for the second straight quarter. Almost a 12% increase. This doesn’t mean your home is instantly worth 12% more. We’ll talk about pricing next. There are a couple of reasons for sales prices rising including less distressed homes inventory - foreclosures and short sales - on the market. And, lower overall inventory which is driving solid offers from buyers. This is good news for homeowners who may have been sitting, waiting to sell. There are indications in the market that seem to be saying the time is now! Another key factor is that only 31% of the houses on the market are priced right to sell and get the homeowners the best return. This doesn’t always mean the highest price. Also, as you can see from the demon-

300+ stration, when your home is priced right, it sells faster and leaves more money in your pocket. In today’s market, the number of days that homes are on the market is decreasing - 28% less time than the same period last year. Homes that are in good condition and priced right are selling much more quickly and at a higher percentage of their asking price than in previous quarters. I am happy to conduct a free analysis, specific to your home, to show you how this information applies specifically to your home and your neighborhood. Lastly, there are fewer homes on the market today and inventory is low. The chart to the left demonstrates how today’s market is actually a seller’s market in some locations and in certain price ranges. It’s been quite a while since we have seen this scenario. Knowledge is power. The key is to get the facts-facts that are specific to your home. Call today and ask your real estate professional for an analysis on your home, your neighborhood and your family’s needs. They can also help you determine how to make your home stand out above the others with tips on home staging, curb appeal and more. Then, with the specifics on your home, you can decide if the time is right for you. The charts above certainly indicate that it just might be.

TOP TEN NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS FOR YOUR PETS Resolution #1: I will eat less and exercise more. Too many nights on the couch, too many dog biscuits and too little time running around the local dog park has made me a little, well, fluffier. I don't think the old "I'm-just-big-boned" excuse will work anymore. I resolve to bug my owner to take me out to the doggy park several times a week. Resolution #2: I will beg less I've got begging down to a fine art – he's putty in my paws – but it sure is demeaning. I promise to reserve the begging for worthwhile things, like going out to the park and T-bone steak. Resolution #3: I will recognize the difference between furniture and fire hydrants. I promise not to treat the furniture and walls the way I do fire hydrants. It drives my owners batty and has no lasting benefit for me (they clear away the scent almost as fast as I can "deposit" it.) Resolution #4: I'll stay out of the cat's litter box. I vow to resist the urge to snoop around the cat's private lavatory – even though it's a lot of fun and really makes her go nuts. Resolution #5: I won't bite the vet anymore. I'll remember that the vets and their staff are just trying to help in their own, inscrutable way, although they really know how to push my buttons with those needles! Resolution #6: I won't steal food as much. I won't go out of my way to steal food; although all bets are off if they make it really easy for me.

PAGE 22

Resolution #7: I'll introduce myself in more appropriate ways. In other words, I'll focus above the waist when introducing myself to humans. Somehow, I get the feeling my normal greeting methods invade their private space. Resolution #8: I'll do better "holding it" until morning. When nature calls, I'll steel my resolve to wait for my normal morning walk, unless special considerations apply. I'll decide what those special considerations are. Resolution #9: I'll bark at the mailman less. Even though it works to put him in his place, I'll try not to exercise my authority over him and other delivery people, although my self-esteem does get a boost when they retreat. Resolution #10: I'll tolerate those homemade bandannas more. My owner has gone to a lot of trouble to make these things, so I'll just put up with the way they feel and the taunts of the other dogs.
