PRESS RELEASE It’s the season to be jolly. . . Wow already we are counting down to Christmas 2020. It’s been a very challenging year, most of which can be

attributed to the global health event that will impact on us for years to come. Otherwise, Labour won a historic

election victory, the All Blacks won only 2 out of 5, Whiti Te Ra were beaten in a grand final for the first time in 8 or 9 years, and lots of us moved to online services. However, kei te ora tonu, life goes on!

While some of us will be celebrating this Christmas its important that we remember that there will be a number of us that are less fortunate. As much as this season brings joy and celebration, it also brings stress and anxiety for many and for many reasons, exams, unemployment, relationships, bereavement, homeless, addictions and the list goes on.

Please, if you or someone you know is struggling, call your GP service or make contact with someone who can help. The following is a list of some of the services that can help, all you need to do is ask!

Ōtaki Update December 2020

Meri Kirihimete and season’s greetings As 2020 draws to a close, I’m taking time to reflect on what I’m sure we can all agree has been a year like no other. So much has changed – how we work, shop, do business, travel and connect with each other.

The resilience and compassion Kāpiti has shown through the COVID-19 pandemic gives me great optimism for the future. Together, we are stronger. I want to thank our district’s tireless volunteer sector, our emergency and essential workers, and our Councillors, Community Boards and Council staff for rising to the challenges to deliver for Kāpiti. I want to acknowledge you, Ōtaki, for putting the wellbeing and safety of our community first, for being agile and nimble in the face of change, and for supporting each other. This summer, spend quality time with friends and whānau. Take good care of yourselves, and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need. We are all in this together. Mayor K Gurunathan

Summer in Kāpiti Summer’s here and we have a bumper line up of events and activities to keep you all energised and entertained. There’s events to suit all, from the popular Sport and Play series in our stunning parks and reserves in January, to larger events in February such as Movies in the Park and the Ōtaki Kite Festival, as well as a not-to-be-missed event in March – He Rangi Mokopuna/Children’s Day at Haruātai Park. There’s so much to explore, experience and visit right here in Kāpiti this summer, so keep an eye out for our monthly calendar of events in our libraries and service centres, and online at www.kapiticoast.govt.nz/summerinkapiti

Something for everyone at Haruātai Park Haruātai Park is the place to be in Ōtaki this summer – with a large playground, picnic and BBQ areas, and a recently renovated pool next to the sports field. Now summer is officially here, we’ve turned on the outdoor splashpad for water-play, and we’ve reopened our awesome 28m long waterslide, Te Mania Auheke, for the summer holidays. It’ll be open every day from 1–3pm (weather dependent). Inside at Ōtaki pool we’ve got inflatables and games, and loads of regular classes like Aquafit, Aquamove and Learn to Swim lessons, too. See you there!

Is it safe to swim? If you’re after a beach or river session instead, Kāpiti has lots of options for cooling off in the water. Our rivers and beaches are generally pretty clean and it’s usually safe to swim, but sometimes heavy rain or drought can change that. You can check if it’s safe to swim anytime this summer on the Land Air Water Aotearoa (LAWA) website. Just click on your favourite spot on the map, or allow your location to find the closest swimming spots to you. You can check out the water quality at all of the best water spots in Kāpiti and around New Zealand.

Penny’s Coffee Pavlova When I was growing up my Mum’s coffee pavlova was part of the dessert table yummies. Whenever I’ve mentioned coffee pav to people they’re intrigued and dying to taste — so here’s the oh so simple adaption of the classic pavlova. You can either make as a standard sized pav, or make in to individual small pavs which go beautifully with berry coulis, cream and/or fancy ice cream.

Pavlova: the Chelsea version Much earlier 2 tablespoons coffee 1/4 cup water Make this strong coffee and cool it. Let eggs come to room temperature. 6 egg whites (at room temperature) 2 cups caster sugar 1 tsp vanilla essence 1 tsp white vinegar 2 tsp cornflour 300ml cream, whipped 1. Pre-heat oven to 110ºC bake (not fan bake). 2. Line a baking tray with baking paper. 3. In a large metal, ceramic or glass bowl (not plastic), beat the egg whites until soft peaks form. 4. Continue beating while adding the caster sugar a quarter of a cup at a time. The mixture should get glossier and thicker with each addition and this should take at least 10 minutes. 5. Beat in the vanilla, vinegar and cornflour. 6. Add the cooled coffee mix. 7. Spoon mixture out onto the prepared tray into a dinner plate sized mound. 8. Bake for about 1½ hours, until dry and crisp and it lifts easily off the baking paper. 9. Turn the oven off and leave the pavlova for at least an hour before removing it from the oven. 10. Finish cooling on a wire rack. 11. When completely cool, place on a serving plate, swirl the top with the whipped cream and decorate with sliced or chopped fruit of your choice, or grated chocolate; or break up a flake bar.

Coffee pav is perfect with raspberries. Tip: it might not look that much darker on the outside from the classic pav, but when you cut into it is when it will reveal the mocha coloured inside. Wha-laa!! mma
