MYQ GATEWAY & 1.3 APP PROBLEM STATEMENT

Create a service brand that caters a UVP (unique value proposition) to both Chamberlain (retail) & Liftmaster (pro brand) garage door openers.

PRODUCT BRANDS

The intitial premise this is a common fear the user experiences: “ Did I leave my garage door open?

PROJECT SCOPE

Create an app-based service that provides the users the benefit of monitoring and operating their garage door opener (GDO).

INSIGHTS DISCOVERED

Users like to use the app to passively monitor user activity. Its important to know how long the garage door has been left open. The same MyQ radio technology could easily be used to control lights inside the home. (i.e. lamps plugged in, however it would not recognize what type of device is plugged in).

MYQ GATEWAY

MYQ LIFTMASTER GATEWAY

The gateway device is a product that communicates MyQ radio protocol via wifi. The device is tethered via ethernet cable to the home router to establish connectivity. It then establishes a wireless signal with a compatible MyQ Garage Door Opener (GDO). The Mobile App then communicates with the gateway device to operate MyQ enabled products at home from anywhere using the smartphones cellular data. The gateway device is a plastic injection molded 2 part housing held together by one centrally located screw boss (found on the bottom of the housing). Designing the gateway from sketch to a manufactured product was a 14th month project. This product was introduced with MyQ 1.0 app launch.

MYQ 1.3 APP UPDATE The 1.3 update includes a unified brand rollout (MyQ service brand) that can cater to Chamberlain (retail) & LiftMaster (pro) brands. 1.3 also includes the ability to view an alerts history log and the ability to set up new alerts for MyQ enabled devices.

PROJECT OUTCOME MyQ 1.3 release inlcuded its own standalone branding that serves both Chamberlain (retail) & LiftMaster (professional) brands. A new feature to set up alerts and an activity log were introduced based on user insights gathered. The MyQ framework allows an inviting platform to engage other devices at home, such as door locks, wall switches, etc to mature the infrastructure of the brand from adolescense. The MyQ App developed includes Web, Mobile web, iOS & Android platforms

ARC (ACCESS RADIO CONTROLS) PROBLEM STATEMENT

Although the brand is reputed for creating a quality product, due to the recent collapse of the housing market, sales of gate operators and their acces radio controls were down.

PROJECT SCOPE

Investigate what is causing Access Radio Control (ARC) sales to drop. Identify what are the purchasing drivers. Initiate the LiftMaster dealer network to get buy-in on what would be the ideal solution.

LIFTMASTER DEALERS

INSTALLERS

PROPERTY MANAGERS

TENANTS

“Is this the most affordable solution?”

“Is this quick to install?”

“Is it easy to manage transmitters?”

“Is it simple / secure to get into my gated community?”

* marks locations of dealers contacted.

8

om suthar UX | ID DESIGNER

INSIGHTS DISCOVERED Transmitter sales is where the money is at. The dealer usually sells the access control for free and recovers profit on transmitter sales (anywhere from 1000 to 6000).

MOUNTING BRACKET

For optimum radio performance, it is ideal to install the access radio outside of the gate operator, in order to do this installers put the access control inside a NEMA rated water tight box.

NEMA 3R WATER TIGHT GASKETING

In urban environments, the acces controls with keypads are prone to vandalism.

ARC USER INTERFACE DESIGN STAR MEMBRANE

PASSPORT MEMBRANE

LCD DISPLAY

The Star 100 has a 128 x 48 LCD screen with backlight. The visual architecture was completely redesigned to add value to each product (STAR 1000 & Passport). Physical variations between the Star 1000 & Passport were created using CFM (color, material, & finish) differentiation between the membrane graphics. The keys are reinforced with metal domes with 250 mg of actuation force. This provides for a confident haptic feedback for each key. The keys closer to the screen are soft keys, whose functions can change with the correlating input provided in the display.

ARC PRODUCT FAMILY

PROJECT OUTCOME A new family of products created scaled for the size of the gated community (small, medium, and large). Each enclosure is NEMA 3R water jet resistant. Comes with an integrated mounting bracket and a redesigned user interface to make programming transmitters quick and easy. This new family of ARC products was launched for LiftMaster in Q1 2013 (860LM, Star 1000, & Passport Reciever).

STAR 1000

The Star 1000 is a stand alone reciever that works directly with a gate operator. The reciever allows the property manager to add & edit transmitters as well as block learn multiple transmitters at a time. The transmitter can hold up to 1000 transmitters in memory.

om suthar UX | ID DESIGNER

PASSPORT RECIEVER

The Passport reciever is NOT a standalone solution. It works in conjunction with a telephone entry system (TES). The Passport serves the simple function of auto learning transimitters and passing them onto the TES for credentials.

A PACKAGING EXPERIENCE PROBLEM STATEMENT

Walmart as well as other major vendors of Chamberlain products aim to go “green”, a metric has been established which each company is measured against to provide more sustainable products and packaging.

PROJECT SCOPE

Create an un-boxing experience that explores utilizing sustainable materials for the GDO (garage door opener).

INSIGHTS DISCOVERED

Walmart’s scorecard specified to replace EPS foam in packaging with a more sustainable alternative. The current packaging form provides no indication of product inside. (only images printed on the box). The current packaging doesn’t provide an “experience”

PROJECT OUTCOME A packaging experience storyboard presentation was circulated and a strategic vendor was found that could provide new alternative packaging materials that met both performance & sustainability requirements. A productivity project was then commenced which went on to not only replace the use of EPS foam altogether, but it also produced a cost savings of $5 million dollars in the first year itself. The new packaging was deployed Q1 2013.
