THE WADDEN WALK A WONDERFUL WALK ABOVE AND BELOW SEA LEVEL

THE WADDEN ROUTE Hiking trails are a great way to discover the gorgeous Wadden Sea, a Unesco World Heritage Site. The Wadden Sea is the largest tidal zone in the world. Its dynamic landscape with a multitude of habitats is unparalleled. Its biodiversity depends on the Wadden Sea. It hosts more than 10,000 species of plants and animals that constantly adapt to the ever-changing environment. In addition, the exceptional amount of produced biomass attracts 10 to 12 million migratory birds that make a stopover here. The Wadden Sea is the only ‘wilderness’ in the Netherlands and was proclaimed the ‘Most Beautiful Nature Reserve of the Netherlands’ in 2016. It offers something for everyone, from nature lovers to connoisseurs. The province of Groningen has many faces. From the picturesque, authentic villages and the lively university

town to the mudflats of the Wadden, where countless trails lead to endless discoveries. There is a lot to do in the Wadden area. Visit the fishing village of Zoutkamp, the Seal Rehabilitation and Research Centre in Pieterburen, or the Noordkaap. Bird lovers should check out the Kiekkaaste bird hide. Mudflat hiking, catching oysters or taking a seal trip are also possible. For cyclists we would highly recommend the ‘Kiek over Diek’ cycle route through the Wadden area. And young nature lovers will enjoy themselves at the activity centre of the Lauwersmeer National Park. The viewing wall at Punt van de Reide is unique. Many seals seek shelter here at high tide and can be admired in all their splendour. The Dollard Visitors’ Centre (Termunten) offers numerous activities for children free of charge. Groningen boasts beautiful old churches and ‘borgen’ (castles). Do not forget to visit the old stronghold of Bourtange, or take a stroll around the atmospheric city of Groningen: this lively university town has many museums, galleries, theatres, restaurants and cafés. Nothing tops Groningen! This hiking guide describes five hiking trails that take you along the highlights of the Groningen Wadden coast. All you need to do is dust off your hiking boots and enjoy the beauty Groningen has to offer! This is one of the three guides that offer hiking trails throughout the Wadden area. The other two guides take you through the Province of Friesland and through Eastern Friesland (Germany). For more information, please go to: www.wadden-route.com

HOTEL HET KLOOSTER - KLOOSTERBUREN

ACCOMMODATION AND ACTIVITIES Of course you do not need to walk the five (partial) routes all at once. You can easily spread them out over a few days. Groningen has plenty of options for accommodation if you want to stay the night. You can choose a luxury hotel, a cosy B&B, or sleep in a historical building or on a boat. Pick a hotel in the lively city centre or enjoy a romantic night in the countryside.

Check out the extensive possibilities for a stay in Groningen at: www.toerisme. groningen.nl/overnachten. Looking for more information on the surroundings and these routes while in the vicinity? Go to www. waddenland.groningen.nl and www. eemsdelta.groningen.nl to locate a tourist information (VVV) shop or an information point near you. If you want to know where to park your car before starting off on a route, go to www.toproutenetwerk.nl, where you will find all tourist transfer points. Have you dusted off your hiking boots? Are you ready to go? Or, as the people in Groningen say: Kloar d’r veur?

The Negenboerenpolder was created in 1872. Agriculture has always been very important in this area with salty sea clay soil. But the saline groundwater limited the growth of crops. To improve growth conditions and counter salinisation, a plan for the supply of freshwater was agreed upon in 1994. The wetlands that emerged are valuable for plants and as resting, nesting and feeding sites for birds. N358 VISITOR CENTRE NOORDKUST

Dressed in shorts, wielding a long, red staff and sporting a full beard, he is hard to miss – which is very handy when walking across the shallows. Staats has become one with the Dutch tidal flats. Forging his way alongside the boat, up to his midriff in water; there is no other place that suits him more.

Download the hiking app and enjoy all the beautiful trails in the Wadden area that Groningen, Friesland and Eastern Friesland have to offer. The app is free for iPhone, iPad and Android and provides a list of hiking trails in the Netherlands (Groningen and Friesland) and Germany (Eastern Friesland), for active holidaymakers, nature lovers and families.

The route tips offer ideal support during your hike. You can plan your route in advance at home, but also use the app as a handy practical guide while hiking. You receive detailed descriptions of the routes with information on the distance, duration and degree of difficulty of the hikes, and sights and tips for recreation and travel. The sights are displayed as interactive clickable symbols on the map. This map is available both onand offline and can be downloaded in advance, enabling you to view the saved trails at any time, even when offline. In addition, the app has an extra function enabling you to determine your location via a GPS signal so you always know exactly where you are. You can zoom in on the topographical map which has a scale of 1:25,000. You can also sort the route information in alphabetical order, degree of difficulty and distance to your final location. This guide leads you from one trail junction to the next. There are five trails, each describing a number of sights that you will pass along the way. At each junction you have the option to take a different trail. For more information, please go to: www.wadden-route.com
