THE WADDEN WALK A WONDERFUL WALK ABOVE AND BELOW SEA LEVEL

ABOUT THE WADDEN

HOW TO GET THERE

Hiking is a great way to discover the gorgeous Wadden Sea area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

the Stadhouderlijk Hof. You can get to know more about this piece of history by taking the Nassau hiking route through Leeuwarden.

The Wadden Sea is the largest tidal zone in the world. Nowhere else on earth will you find such a dynamic landscape with a multitude of habitats. The biodiversity depends on the Wadden Sea that provides a haven for over 10,000 plant and animal species, which continually adapt to the constantly changing environment. In addition, the exceptional amount of produced biomass attracts 10 to 12 million migratory birds that make a stopover here.

Due to Friesland’s rich history, there are numerous museums in the province. You can, for instance, visit the Kazemattenmuseum in Korn werderzand. This war museum tells the story of the Battle of the Afsluitdijk (a causeway linking the provinces of North Holland and Friesland) when the Germans invaded the Netherlands in 1940. Or discover in the Kaatsmu seum in Franeker the history of the Frisian sport of kaatsen, a traditional Frisian sport similar to American handball.

The Wadden Sea is the only ‘wilderness’ in the Netherlands and was proclaimed the ‘Most Beautiful Nature Reserve of the Netherlands’ in 2016. It offers something for everyone, from nature lovers to connoisseurs.

Where in the world are the cities smaller than villages? In Friesland! They are not designated as cities because of their size but due to their historic value. Friesland is of course known for the Elfstedentocht, an ice skating competition and leisure tour on natural ice through eleven cities. Did you know that three of the eleven cities are in the Wadden area? Dokkum, Franeker and Harlingen are in the Wadden region. These cities have wonderful hiking trails. The province’s capital, Leeuwarden, is a great place to go when you visit Friesland. Leeuwarden is a royal city, the roots of the Dutch royal family are in Leeuwarden - or Ljouwert, as the Frisians call it. Leeuwarden was the capital of the Netherlands from 1584 to 1747 and the royal family resided in

Coastal fishing and the fishing culture have contributed greatly to the Province of Friesland as we know it today. The protected villagescape of Moddergat ’t Fiskershúske’ is in the most northern part of Friesland, directly on the Wadden Sea. This open-air museum keeps alive the memories of the long-gone coastal fishing and general fishing culture. Ready for something different? Discover Harlingen, a real Wadden city. It is where you will find the Harlinger Pottery and Tile Factory, a family business with a rich history. The factory was established in 1598

and today it is the last business in the Netherlands to manufacture pottery and tiles using authentic techniques. Hungry? Then have a bite to eat in Restaurant De Zwarte Haan. The restaurant is located at the end of the Nieuwebildtdijk. You have an amazing view over the Wadden Sea from the sea dyke. You can even see the island of Ameland. A statue of the ‘Slikwerker’ (mud worker) stands to remind us of the time-consuming dredging work carried out in the Bildt area between 1505 and 1754. The construction of the Oude- and Nieuwebildtdijk (dykes) created the Bildt, rich arable land that has become world famous for the Bildstar potato.

This hiking guide describes five hiking trails that take you along the highlights of Friesland’s Wadden coast. Simply dust off your hiking boots and enjoy the beauty Friesland has to offer! This is one of three guide books that offer hiking trails throughout the Wadden area. The other two guide books take you through the Province of Groningen and through Eastern Friesland (Germany). In the north-west of Friesland, on the alluvial land in the mouth of what was once the Middelzee (or Bordine) estuary, you can discover the Munici pality of het Bildt. Here, the general and cultural history are clearly visible: the land reclamation, the exceptional dyke constructions, the special farm buildings and the characteristic spacious landscape. In a roughly 30-kilometre tour over the old sea dykes you pass by many prominent sites, galleries, lovely cafes and eateries. The North Friesland Buitendijks nature reserve is also well worth visiting. An 8.8-kilometre day-long hike has been set out through this wonderful area starting from the characteristic village of Oudebildtzijl.

This varied hike takes you past important historic buildings in the old university city of Franeker and through the stunning cultivated landscape beyond. Franeker is believed to have been established as a Carolingian settlement around the year 800. The name is derived from Froon-acker, which literally means ‘land of the king’. The route follows T E X part E L of the 42-kilometre long Slachtedijk, the Middelzee (or Bordine) sleeper dyke (secondary inland dyke). A The Eise Eisinga Planetarium is a great place to visit. Mounted on the living room ceiling of a lovely canal house in Franeker is the world’s oldest functioning planetarium. This accurately moving model of the solar system was built between 1774 and 1781 by Eise Eisinga, a wool carder. B

Museum Martena is Franeker’s city museum; it is housed in the Martenastins that was built in 1498 by order of Hessel van Martena. The former Kruisheeren monastery in Franeker accommodated a university from 1585 to 1811.
