Walking around local parks, pathways and walking trails over the last couple of months, residents may have noticed brightly decorated rocks hidden in various spots. These works of art may have been created by members of the local groups including the #FishhawkRocks group which has joined in on a phenomenon sweeping the nation, rock painting and hiding. FishHawk resident Kim Santucci created the FishHawk Rocks Faceook page in April after a relative added her to the “Palm Harbor Rocks” group in Pinellas County. “I had no idea what it was all about, I had never heard of doing this,” said Santucci. “It turned out this was actually a nationwide movement going on simply to make people smile.” After Santucci created the group, she

asked about 30 people to join right away and within hours membership grew, reaching 850 by mid-June. Santucci’s directions to members are simple. “You take a rock, paint it however you’d like and write on the back of it ‘FishHawk Rocks’ and then hide it in a public place somewhere in the area,” she said. “When you find a rock, you take a picture of it to post it on the group page, then you can choose to keep it or re-hide it. It is as simple as that. It is so much fun to see how excited kids get when they find a rock. Most of them choose to keep them, but then they go home and paint their own to hide.” The Facebook page is very active with daily posts from members with pictures of rocks they have hidden and hints on locations in addition to smiling pictures of the finders of the beautiful rocks. Another way members have embraced the trend is with rock painting parties with preschools, moms’ groups and scout troops. Some people also post on social media with the hashtag #fishhawkrocks, so that rock pictures are easily searchable. “I think the FishHawk Rocks idea is awesome,” said FishHawk resident Kristin Kenny, mother to Braydon (5) and Grace (9). “The kids and I regularly go out for walks or bike rides hunting for hidden rocks. It definitely creates a sense of community and is just another reason why I love living in FishHawk.” Search “FishHawk Rocks” or #FishHawkRocks on Facebook to join the group or for more information.

Jessica Miller competed in her first Special Olympics event nearly 15 years ago. Her father, Jon Miller, convinced her to participate in the 100-yard dash at Durant High School. Miller won the contest with flying colors, and she kept running, even though her shoe came off in the process. Jon was waiting at the finish line, signaling to Jessica to stop at the finish, but she didn’t hear him and kept running with one shoe on around the track. Miller is a big competitor. “I love to win,” she said. Every year since then, Jessica, who has Down Syndrome, has competed in the Special Olympics. She has participated in local events and district and state competitions as well. In May, she won a silver medal at the state level in a tennis skills event. Jessica loves to take part in tennis, bowling and swimming contests, which all occur throughout the year. “She gives it 110 percent,” Jon Miller said. “She likes to win, but at the same time, she cheers for all of her friends and all of the other athletes to win, too.” Miller, a Valrico native, has lived in the area most of her life. She graduated from Bloomingdale High School in 2007. Jessica likes to swim, go to church and to the movies. She also enjoys singing and is a part of her church’s choir and

Rima participates in Special Olympics with Jessica. Jessica has an infectious attitude that rubs off on almost everybody that she meets. She always has a smile on her face, despite her challenges. She lives life as a happy person, and in the process, she leaves a positive impact on all that meet her and get to know her. “She obviously means the world to me,” said Jon. “She has helped give me a perspective on life that’s much different because of how kind she is and how loving she is. She doesn’t get caught up in the day-to-day drama of the world, but keeps life simple and just focuses on loving others and giving the best hugs around.” On June 9, TD Bank hosted its annual Special Olympics Trading Card Day in Hillsborough County to raise money. The fundraiser enables employees, customers, friends and family to support the goal of raising more than $1 million for Special Olympics in the states where TD operates. To date, $8.7 million has been raised for Special Olympics programs. If you would like to donate to the cause, contact your local TD Bank.

Melissa L Haskins Financial Advisor

We’re getting close to the Fourth of July, when we celebrate the freedoms we enjoy in this country. The U.S. constitution grants us many of these liberties, but we have to earn others – such as our financial freedom. What steps can you take to achieve the financial independence you need to reach your long-term goals? For starters, always work to build your resources. Contribute as much as you can afford to your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. If you don’t take advantage of this match, you are essentially leaving money on the table. While how much you invest is an essential factor in gaining your financial freedom, how you invest your money is equally important. So make sure you have sufficient growth potential in all your accounts. While growth-oriented investments, such as stocks and stock-based vehicles, carry investment risk, you can help moderate this risk by also including other investments, such as bonds. Another way to gain your financial independence is to liberate yourself from the shackles of debt. This isn’t always easy, of course – most of us have experienced times when our cash flow simply wasn’t sufficient to meet our expenses, so we had to take on some type of debt, either through a credit card or a loan. But the more you can control your debts, the more money you’ll have to save and invest for your future. One way to manage your debt load is to build an emergency fund, containing three to six months’worth of living expenses, which you can use to pay unexpected costs such as a major car

repair or a large medical bill. Ideally, you should keep this money in a liquid, low-risk account, so you can access the funds quickly and without penalty. Aside from possibly helping you control your debts, an emergency fund also may enable you to avoid dipping into your long-term investments to pay for short-term needs. Thus far, we’ve only discussed achieving your financial freedom through methods of saving and investing. But you also need to consider your protection needs, too. If you were to become ill or suffer a serious injury, and you could not work for a while, your financial security could be jeopardized. Your employer might offer you disability insurance as an employee benefit, but it may not be enough for your needs, so you might need to purchase some additional coverage on your own. And to help ensure your family’s financial security, you’ll also need sufficient life insurance. You also might want to protect yourself from the catastrophic costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay. The average annual cost for a private room in a nursing home is more than $92,000, according to the 2016 Cost of Care Study issued by the insurance company Genworth. And Medicare generally covers only a small percentage of these expenses. You may want to consult with a financial professional to learn about ways you can protect yourself from the long-term care burden. By following these suggestions, you can go a long way toward declaring your own financial independence. Consider taking action soon. Pediatric Dentist Puts Focus On Creating Supportive And Educative Environment

By Caitlin Masessa

Carr Pediatric Dentistry is located in the Boyette Executive Center.

Can you imagine a world in which your child is begging you to go to the dentist? If you are a client of Carr Pediatric Dentistry in Riverview, this is a reality. Located in the Boyette Executive Center, the offices of Carr Pediatric Dentistry offer a “topnotch” team that are quickly becoming a staple in the community due to their supportive and nurturing approach to providing quality dental care to children and infants. “We have a lot of kids that cry when they are done because they don’t want to leave,” Dr. Natalie Carr-Bustillo said. Originally from Argentina, and after living in East Tennessee for a bit, it was in Apollo Beach where Dr. Carr-Bustillo truly grew up and the Tampa area where she thrived. “[Florida] is just home to me.” Her love for the Riverview area shines through at Carr Pediatric, where Dr. Carr-Bustillo strives to make the experience for her patients a positive memory. “We have iPads kids can play with, toys, and books to read,” Dr. Carr-Bustillo spoke of her strategy, “We also have

stuffed animals with teeth so that they can brush them.” However, these objects aren’t meant to distract the children from the sounds of dental work, but to make the experience appear less frightening to the eyes of a child. “While we give the parents a tour of the office, we’ll leave the child playing in the open room, watching other cooperative children so they don’t sense the fear,” Dr. Carr-Bustillo stated, “It gives [the child watching] a sense of ‘okay, if these kids can do it, so can I.’” Although Dr. Carr-Bustillo believes that exposing the child to the sounds of dentistry is an integral part for the young patients, Carr Pediatric strives to promote the education of dental health for both the patients and parents. “I love when parents come in with a list of questions,” Dr. Carr-Bustillo beamed, “While we speak to the parents about the medical history, we focus on educating the kids on good oral hygiene.” Dr. Carr-Bustillo also believes that the key to the business’ success is an outstanding team. “We have a lot of meetings where we just talk about how we can be better and provide the best service in the industry.” Carr Pediatric Dentistry is located on 11936 Boyette Rd. in Riverview in the Boyette Executive Center. Up until June 2016 I would have considered myself an active Before After person. I have always had a smaller body type and never felt insecure or uncomfortable with my weight. After being married for almost a year and having a desk job though, I found myself beginning to look softer and chubbier in different areas throughout my chest, abdomen and legs. In January 2017 a good friend and I decided to sign up for the Gasparilla 8k and that is where my fitness journey officially began. I was originally doing an interval running program set up for me by a friend, but realized I needed more. I'd heard of Drew through a couple friends and knew that he and Ashleigh had just opened up FX Fitness. I went for my first class and was hooked to say the least. The atmosphere at FX is so fun and uplifting, even on a bad day I look forward to my workout. I attend FX Effect classes at least four days a week and cannot be happier with my results thus far. I've even found myself getting up for the 6AM classes on days I cant make an afternoon class, which is not normally my style. I am not a morning person. FX Fitness has provided me with a place where I can feel comfortable transforming my body while making awesome new friends along the way. I am so thankful for FX Fitness and don’t know where I would be on my fitness journey without them.

Learned grew up in Valrico, playing baseball on the Bloomingdale Little League. After high school he studied Economics at the University of Tampa with a full-scholarship from the U.S. Navy. During his eight years of military service Learned has spent four of those deployed to the Middle East where he supported operations against ISIS and led teams against Somali pirates. His experiences in the Middle East taught him how to be a

leader and make hard decisions. Not one to be wasteful of his time, in 2013 Learned opened up a local branch of the franchise GradePower Learning in Valrico in between his deployments. His success was swift and in 2016 the Valrico GradePower Learning was named the #1 GradePower franchise in the nation, receiving the GradePower President’s award. Learned is now taking all of that experience to run for congress and represent the I-4 Corridor in the issues he feels affect the local community the most. “Health care is my number one issue right now. Washington is taking health care away from 50,000 people in the I-4 Corridor alone,” Learned said. He is also concerned with education, small businesses and ensuring good paying jobs for residents. “We need good paying jobs so people can earn a living here and not have to move away,” he added. “We need a congressman who is from here. I grew up here, this is my home,” Learned said. For information on Andrew Learned and his Congressional run in 2018, visit

The Wooden Spoon Diner Serves Up Classic Comfort Food With A Modern Twist The recently opened Wooden Spoon Diner in Brandon is already stirring up rave reviews with its modern twist on comfort food classics. With an extensive menu offering traditional breakfast combinations alongside offbeat selections like the Crab Cake Eggs Benedict, customers are all but guaranteed to discover something to suit even the most sophisticated palate. The diner’s breakfast and lunch menu presents a variety of flavors such as its internationally infused Greek Spinach Omelet and Maryland-Style Crab Cakes. Coffee aficionados will appreciate the micro-roasted organic cold brew coffee, a European gourmet coffee from Royal Cup. Riverview resident Manny Roussos is the owner and operator. With more than a decade in the restaurant industry, this is Roussos’ third restaurant. The diner’s name pays homage to Roussos' mother and his preferred cooking utensil. "I only use wooden spoons to stir my sauces and soups," he explained. "And my mom used to knock me on the head with a wooden spoon, so my fiancé suggested I call it the Wooden Spoon," he said smiling. The Wooden Spoon Diner’s head cook is Rick Leasy, and he is no stranger to the kitchen or Roussos. Leasy has more than 40 years of cooking experi-

What do you do when you have a health problem? Call your doctor, ask friends, or do research on the internet? Whether it’s a small or big problem, it can impact your quality of life. If the problem is related to any of the following issues, it’s possible to get relief through outpatient therapy at a rehab center: • Coughing or choking while eating or drinking, difficult or painful swallowing, food stuck in the throat or continual nose running during meals, can all be addressed by a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) who specializes in adult impairments. In addition, SLPs can assist with word finding, short term memory and vocal disorders, including helping those with Parkinson’s Disease improve their ability to be understood. • Difficulty walking, weakness, impaired balance and coordination (including dizziness), gait abnormality, postural instability, amputation, musculoskeletal pain (headaches, joint pain, etc) and post-surgical impairments can be addressed by a Physical Therapist (PT). PTs are able to treat the impairments using manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, balance and gait interventions. • Low vision, which a term for someone who has tried glasses, medication or surgery, but is still unable to complete necessary activities due to poor vision, can be addressed by an Occupational Therapist (OT) with a specialty in low vision. In addition, OTs can address fine motor problems that effect writing, dressing, bathing, toileting, meal preparation and housekeeping. OTs address the underlying reasons for the problems, teach compensatory techniques and recommend adaptive equipment. Anyone looking for outpatient therapy should make sure to ask for one-on-one treatment with therapists who specialize in adults. It’s important to know in advance what kinds of payment the facility takes (Medicare, insurance, private pay). A doctor would need to write a prescription for therapy. If you’re not sure if therapy would help, call a rehab center and ask to talk to a therapist. Dustie Lynch, MBA, MS, CCC/SLP is an SLP at Hawthorne Health & Rehab Center in Brandon, and specializes in swallowing, speech and cognitive impairments for both inpatient and outpatient adults, certified in VitalStim and LSVT Loud programs, and can be reached at

Construction Underway For New Fishhawk Fire Station No.44 It was nearly two years ago when residents first learned about the county’s plans to build a brand new fire station to better serve the FishHawk and Riverview communities. County officials hosted a groundbreaking ceremony in May and are pleased to announce that construction of Fire Station No.44 is now well underway, with plans to complete the project by December 2017 and to open the new station to serve the public in early 2018. “The fire station was much needed for the citizens of the area, so we can have quicker response times for those that call us in an emergency,” said Deputy Chief of Administration Jason Dougherty. First stop, Washington, D.C., but not before a great trip to the Udvar-Hazy Center Smithsonian Air & Space Museum. Next stop Boston, MA and a great trip. We rented a VRBO home in the Jamaica Pond District and had additional family join us. One day touring Harvard and exploring the Metro system and another day taking the tour and starting at the shipyards and following the Freedom Trail. We drove up to New Brunswick for a family visit and made sure to bring passports for all family members for the border crossing.

En route back to Virgina, we decided to make a day trip detour to New York City with the kids. Knowing we couldn’t scratch the surface with just a daytrip, we wanted to give the kids as much opportunity to see the sights as possible so we parked at the Circle-Line Sightseeing Boat Landmark Tour including Statue of Liberty, One World Trade Center, Empire State Building, Wall Street, Brooklyn Bridge & more. Book at Directly adjacent to the CircleLine boat harbor, sits the USS Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. The Intrepid is a former aircraft carrier launched in 1943 which fought in World War II, survived five kamikaze attacks and one torpedo strike. The ship later served in the Cold War and the Vietnam War. Intrepid also served as a NASA recovery vessel in the 1960s. It was decommissioned in 1974, and today is berthed on the Hudson River. In addition, the museum offers the Space Shuttle Pavilion showcases the space shuttle Enterprise, the prototype NASA orbiter that paved the way for America’s successful space shuttle program. Seventeen dynamic exhibit zones feature original artifacts, photographs, audio, and films that immerse visitors in the science and history of the space shuttle era. Lynn Barber, Hillsborough County Extension Change in Watering Restrictions

Effective June 5, 2017 through August 1, 2017, Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) issued a Modified Phase III Water Shortage Restrictions. In the past we, Hillsborough County residents, were able to water two days per week. With the new restrictions, we are allowed to water one day per week. Please see the chart for information on the day of the week you can water based on your ending/last house number. Watering can occur before 8 am and after 6 pm. These restrictions apply to the use of wells and surface sources such as ponds, rivers and canals, and utility-supplied water. The size of your property does not change the restrictions. As stated on the SWFWMD website,, “homeowners associations and other entities must suspend any requirement to replace lawns, pressure wash, or engage in other activity which increases water use during this water shortage declaration.” You can use microirrigation or hand water plants, but not turfgrass/lawns.

FishHawk Roller Hockey Team Takes Aim At 10U National Championship Title

Photos by FRHL house League and by Lilla Bordas The Team FishHawk 10U team participated in and qualified for the Mite (10U) at the National Tournament in Wesley Chapel this month. Bottom Row L to R - Landon Daney, Dylan Precourt, Ethan Precourt - Top Row L to R - Preston Walrath, Ross Callahan, JoJo Serra, Coach Joe Serra, Drew Callahan, Coach Tom Walkinshaw, Henry Sprinkle, Callen Carroll, Taylor Domenech.

Following its success at the recently held TORHS 2 Hot 4 Ice Regional tournament, Team FishHawk qualified for the 10U National Roller Hockey Championships scheduled for Sunday to Tuesday, July 9-11 at Florida Hospital Center Ice in Wesley Chapel. The 10-member team is drawn from the FishHawk Roller Hockey League, (FRHL) which after its small beginning last fall is now boasting of more than 30 players, divided into four teams in two age divisions; the Squirt teams (ages 5-9) as the Stars and the Panthers and two Pee Wee teams (ages 10-14), the Lightning and the Sharks. FishHawk Roller Hockey League Director, Matt Scribner, spoke highly of the program and what it offers to its young dedicated players and the community. “Our coaches, including Joe Serra, Tom Walkinshaw, Jim Precourt, Jim Daney, and James Walrath are just one of a number of reasons why our kids

are enjoying such success so quickly,” Scribner said, adding that having access to the community’s very own inline hockey rink inside Hawk Park, 5702 Hawkpark Blvd. in Lithia is also a huge advantage. Of course, qualifying for the upcoming tourney would not be possible without the young player’s commitment to the sport they love.

Under the coach’s watchful eyes, FishHawk Roller Hockey players practice their skills at the community rink at Hawk Park, 5702 Hawkpark Blvd. in Lithia.

“We are proud of the players especially since the league has only been around for less than a year, and half of our players are under the age of eight,”

said Serra, Team FishHawk head coach. “We began with most of the kids in the league never playing the game prior, and could barely skate. But through their hard work and dedication they are skating their way to the top.” It is safe to say that the FishHawk Roller Hockey League offers children an alternative and opportunity to play the sport of hockey.

A free Clinic and Player Evaluation is scheduled for its fall season (October through mid-December) on Saturday, September 30, at 9 a.m. at Hawk Park. A fundraiser at Cherry's Bar and Grill in FishHawk was held last month, welcoming as its special guest former NHL All Star and Lightning player Brian Bradley. The event hosted a silent auction sponsored by Jag Sports Marketing. Other sponsors included Cherry's Bar & Grill, FishHawk Sporting Goods, Publix FishHawk, CrossFit 31, Impact Wellness, Ciccio's, Studio 19 Designs, HiTech Automotive. Proud of one of his former players recently signing an NHL contract with the Edmonton Oilers, Serra said, “Perhaps one of these great kids on our current team will be next. Let’s help get them there.” For more information, please visit The THORS2HOT4ICE tourney runs from July 5-13, for all divisions.

5th Gear Fitness Offers Youth Boot Camp Class In June

When Tina Guinn and Theresa Evans opened Sunshine Real Estate of Tampa Bay, they decided to be boutique style for the unique opportunity to serve the local community. Many may consider a “boutique” firm to cater to high end only or possibly too small to break into the competitive real estate market. In reality, boutique firms are extremely specialized businesses with being centered on customer service and professionalism. Your community is your boutique firm’s community. Your boutique firm will typically be committed to the community because their business only does well if the community does well. Broker Tina Guinn was born and raised in the Tampa Bay area and her family has been here for many generations. She said, “With having over 18 years experience in real estate and five years experience working with a custom home builder, I am sure to find the perfect place for you to call home. Contact me for help selling your existing home and I will help you find your new home in this beautiful Tampa Bay area.” Realtor Theresa Evans is a Florida native and has lived in the Tampa Bay area for 26 years. “I feel right at home in the real estate market. My experience is on all sides of the transaction.

5th Gear Fitness will hold Youth Boot Camp classes for ages 812 on every Tuesday and Thursday at 4:15 p.m. The cost for each child to participate is $10 per class with each additional sibling discounted to $8. Parents can also participate for an extra charge. 5th Gear Fitness strives to work personally with each client to optimize whole fitness, health, and well-being through training, consultation, education and motivation. It is located at 1076 E. Brandon Blvd. in Suite 211 in Brandon. For more information, call 662-4044 or email You can also visit and its Facebook page @5gearfit.

According to owners Stefano Plazza, Jimmy Mormino and Joe Plazza, they chose to work in this industry because they love what they do. They came from Sicily in the 70's with nothing but their expertise in sculpting and crafting marble and granite and a few close friends. They have now flourished in the heart of Tampa for almost 40 years. “We enjoy creating counter tops and unique design pieces that grab people's attention.” Their experience in the industry allows them to transform large imported slabs into real works of art. They can accommodate designs from simple to exquisite, and offer an impressive variety of granite and marble slabs stocked on-site. They fabricate and install granite, marble, and quartz counter tops and flooring. Classic Stone Gallery can help with all of your natural stone renovations. They deal directly with the public and only charge by the square foot, which saves you money by not having to pay for full slabs. Call 247-2840 or email for a free quote. It is located at 5724 E. Photobooths Come To FishHawk Ranch

Are you looking for a fun addition to an event or party? River Hills resident Casey McComb might have your answer. McComb recently opened FishHawk PhotoBooths offering fun entertainment to weddings, graduations, birthday parties, retirement parties and more. “Our booth is a little different than some of the ones I've run into,” said McComb.” Many of the booths out there right now utilize a DSLR camera and an actual enclosure. Our booth is iPad based and we utilize a backdrop instead of the enclosure.” According to McComb, the iPad based booths are easier to run and take up less space at an event. “With our booth, if you can work an iPhone then you will have no problem figuring out our set up,” said McComb. “In addition, our booth takes up roughly a 2'x2' footprint and can be set up just about anywhere, weather permitting.” The booth also provides GIFs, social sharing, boomerangs, texts, emails and can print out the pictures onto photo strips on the spot.
