Area History The Osprey/Nokomis area has been home to prehistoric humans, homesteaders and land barons. Land that was originally deemed as swamp land has become home to international businesses and beautiful homes with the added allure of tranquil recreation areas and beautiful beaches. Jesse Knight, a cattleman, is regarded as the first settler of the local area, arriving with his family in 1868, after having already grazed his cattle here. John Webb had arrived as a “homesteader” at Spanish Pont the year before, and he received his grant

of 144 acres in 1882 under the 1862 Homesteaders Act. In turn, he also initiated the first post office in the area, known as Osprey in 1884. In 1910 Bertha Palmer, a renowned Chicago socialite and widow of a wealthy businessman, bought a large Osprey Nokomis Chamber of Commerce
tract of land in the area. Across these lands lay a right-of-way for the Seaboard Air Line Railway, which would soon become the Bertha Palmer railroad connection to Nokomis. Bertha Palmer went on to acquire a ¼ of the land in Sarasota County, and established her home at Osprey Point, adjacent to Spanish Point. In 1918, Dr. Fred H. Albee, an innovative orthopedic surgeon from New York City, bought 112 acres of land in Nokomis, Albee and his wife Louella built an inn, The Pollyanna, along the new highway. Dr. Fred Albee continued to build up the area when he established the Florida Medical Center in 1933. The center attracted patients for treatment and surgery from throughout the U.S. and foreign countries and occupied five buildings. Later, this facility became the core of an Army Medical Hospital in World War II. The access to the Seaboard Airline Railroad with its “Orange Blossom Special’ from New York was an extra benefit. Also, a Stinson airplane, The Reliance, served as a private air ambulance for the center. 11
Floridaland
In December 1964, the area got its first tourist attraction, known as “Floridaland”. Built on a 50-acre site just south of Blackburn Point, where the beautiful Southbay development now stands, Floridaland featured 10 attractions in one place for one admission price. Hourly shows in the Old West town were held in the Golden Nugget Saloon and the sheriff would arrive to save the day by overwhelming a band of bank thieves in a street shoot out to the delight of the park’s visitors. There were also pretty can-can girls, a stern wheel riverboat, and exotic tropical gardens. One of the highlights of Floridaland was the porpoise and sea lion shows which performed throughout the day in the Porpoise Pool. In July 1967, The Holiday Inn – a 100-room hotel complex built to spearhead further commercial
development of the area, opened at Floridaland. Although the amusement park closed in the summer of 1971, the hotel remains, Under British ownership it has become Bentley’s Boutique Hotel and has 138 rooms, including a restaurant, lounge, coffee shop, swimming pool and tiki bar. As an area favorite, it was at full capacity during the peak holiday season of 2014.

Oscar Scherer State Park There is a special relationship between the home of Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast and our local State Park Oscar Scherer. Both properties were once owned by the Burrows family. In her will, Elsa Scherer Burrows (1884-1955) left the family’s 460-acre South Creek Ranch to the state in memory of her father Oscar Scherer (who invented a process for dyeing leather in 1872). After a year of preparation, Oscar Scherer State Park opened to the public in 1956. Three decades later, realtor and environmentalist, Jon Thaxton began campaigning for the state to purchase and
protect adjoining Florida scrub-jay territory. With help from The Nature Conservancy, Sarasota County and wide public support, the state purchased an additional 922 acres from the adjacent Palmer Ranch in 1991. The park now preserves more than two square-miles of natural land in a rapidly developing region and provides resource-based recreation for over 100,000 visitors annually. Osprey Nokomis Chamber of Commerce
The park provides fifteen miles of trails for hiking and bicycling. Canoeists and kayakers can paddle along South Creek, at tidal blackwater stream, which flows to a nearby bay. Freshwater and saltwater fishing are both available in the park, along with a swimming hole at Lake Osprey. The Lester Finley Barrier Free Nature Trail is accessible to those with sight, hearing or mobility impairments. There is also a wheelchair accessible fishing dock, butterfly observation area and drinking fountain. Oscar Scherer State Park has 104 campsites, which include a picnic table, grill/ campfire ring, electric hookup, and water hook-up. Conservation Foundation of Gulf Coast at bay preserve Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast saves and protects our wild places forever, protecting clean drinking water, providing natural flood protection, preserving wildlife’s home, and creating beautiful places where people can relax and have fun. Their headquarters are located at Bay Preserve, 400 Palmetto Avenue in Osprey. This beautiful park is open to the public from dawn to dusk and is permanently conserved, providing public access to Little Sarasota Bay, now and forever. Visitors are encouraged to picnic, play a game of bocce, explore the children’s Discovery Zone, launch a kayak, fish from the dock, and enjoy the peaceful beauty of the majestic oaks and the sparkling bay. Conservation Foundation is proud to host Sarasota Crew, and if you visit in the afternoon you might see their young rowers on the bay. The historic Burrows-Matson House overlooks the bay and is named for its first and last owners. Dr. Waters Burrows and his wife Elsa Scherer Burrows built the home and boathouse in 1931. In 1955, the widowed Mrs. Burrows donated a portion of the South Creek Ranch to create Oscar Scherer State Park, named in honor of her father. Knowing the first owners were conservationists, the last owners, J. Richard and
Cornelia Matson sold their home to Conservation Foundation at a generously discounted price in order for Bay Preserve to be permanently protected for the public’s enjoyment. Conservation Foundation was able to purchase Bay Preserve with the help of a State of Florida grant from the Florida Forever fund. To date, Conservation Foundation has protected 11,370 acres in the five coastal counties Manatee to Collier. legacy trail history... Then...anD now The Legacy Trail is the largest public recreation project ever constructed in Sarasota County. Sarasota County’s poplar multi-use path has over 210,000 users per year. This converted railroad track, is a gift of significant historical and environmental lands which promotes a sense of community among Sarasota County residents and provide a place for visitors and residents to use and enjoy. Uses include viewing wildlife in different habitats, bridges over waterways and relaxing in a mostly undeveloped environment. The first passenger coach ran on the brand-new Seaboard Air Line Railway Sarasota to Venice extension on November 12, 1911. The Venice Train Depot, built by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, was opened March 27, 1927. The railroad helped Venice survive during the Florida real estate bust and the Great Depression. The cadets and faculty of the Kentucky Military Institute traveled by rail to winter classes in Venice from 1933 to 1970. The railroad also transported patients to Dr. Albee’s Florida Medical Center from 1932 to
1942. Many servicemen and goods were transported over the rails to Venice and the Army Air Base during WWII (1942-45). On April 30, 1971, the last passenger train arrived in Venice. Limited freight service continued until January 1992. The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus used the Seaboard Air Line / Legacy Corridor to reach its winter quarters in Venice from 1960 to 1992.

Sarasota County purchased and restored the Venice Train Depot. The restored Depot was dedicated October 24, 2003. The Historic Depot serves as an historical resource with tours by the Venice Area Historical Society and as a regional transportation hub for Sarasota County Area Transit. The Depot now serves as a trailhead for the multi-use trail. In 2004 after more than a decade of planning, the county’s $11.75 million purchase of the scenic CSX railroad corridor was accomplished in partnership with The Trust for Public Land and celebrated on April 4, 2005. At nearly 12.5 miles long, the 100-foot-wide CSX corridor stretches from just south of Clark Road in Sarasota to Center Road in Venice. The Legacy Trail links to the Venetian Waterway Park (VWP) at the historic Venice Train Depot at the Venice Avenue Bridge, where trail users can continue south on VWP mainland trail to the Shamrock Park Nature Center or cross the Intercoastal Waterway to

the VWP island-side trail and south to Caspersen Beach and Park. It is about 15 miles from the trail’s beginning point near Sawyer Loop Rd. in Sarasota to either of the southern trailheads at Caspersen Beach or Shamrock Park. The Venice Area Historical Society is a great source for information about the Venice Train Depot and The Legacy Trail corridor. The Legacy Trail offers several areas to stop, rest and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. Trailheads/Rest stops offer access points with parking. For more information check out the Friends of Legacy Trail’s website: friendsofthelegacytrail.org Additionally, users will find rest stations every mile that have places to sit and relax. Remember to follow the local waterway speed limits. Our Sarasota Bay and Intracoastal Waterway are also home to wonderful marine life. In addition to local fish, we have manatee, dolphins, turtles, sea birds, and other sea-life sharing the water with you. Manatees are very slow-moving vegetarians that eat mostly sea grasses. They float near the surface therefore can easily be injured by boat motors. Please keep an eye out for our Manatee zones and reduce speed to ‘no wake.’ Also, remember both jet skis and motor boaters are to respect the ‘no wake’ speed anytime you are outside of the Intracoastal Waterway. Sarasota Bay is lined with large oyster beds and shallow areas just outside of the Intracoastal Waterway channels, therefore it’s safest

osprey real estate By Bryan Guentner From the first US homesteaders in 1867, The Webb Family in Osprey and the Knight Family in Nokomis, the Osprey-Nokomis real estate was recognized for its natural beauty as much as its potential. The area real estate is very diversified from the $90,000 bungalow to the $16,500,00 Casey Key Estate. Sorrento East, Sorrento Villas, and Sorrento Shores are all notable communities with non-waterfront villas starting at $135,000, homes starting at $225,000, and waterfront homes starting at $450,000. These subdivisions were developed starting in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Southbay Yacht and Tennis Club is a wonderful waterfront community with a great clubhouse, it’s own marina, tennis club and miles of walking trails. This subdivision used to be the home to the jumping porpoises of Floridaland, the first theme park in Florida prior to Disney World. Prices range from $350,000, for nonwaterfront homes to $1,200,000, for Bayfront homes. The Oaks subdivision and Historic Spanish Point were once part of the original Bertha Palmer Real Estate holdings. At one point in 1910 she had purchased and owned over 80,000 acres of land in the Sarasota County area with her estate and Florida home located in Osprey. Osprey Nokomis Chamber of Commerce
The Oaks is now a private club and community of about 700 homes with two gorgeous golf courses. Prices range from $450,000 to over $2,500,000. Once known as Treasure Island, Casey Key retains its old Florida image and is a slice of paradise for CEO’s, Celebrities, and third and fourth generation winter residents. With its private beachfront properties and sparkling blue-green aqua waters, Casey Key is one of Florida’s gems with properties ranging in price from $1,000,000 to $16,500,000. There are many other wonderful new and old communities in the Osprey and Nokomis area. The chosen communities’’ above had a huge impact and /or historical significance to the Osprey-Nokomis area.

OUR CHAMBER’S BEGINNING On January 19, 1965, almost fifty-four years ago now, a group of Osprey businessmen filed the necessary paper work with the Florida Department of State Business Registration to create Osprey’s first Chamber of Commerce. I was in the second grade at Osprey Elementary School; the theme park Floridaland (now SouthBay) had only been open for a year, and Osprey still had a community youth recreation center, a well-equipped softball field, and enough family-owned retail stores to provide for most all of our needs. The formation of the Osprey Area Chamber of Commerce, Inc. came just in time to assist the community in one of its most challenging times. The widening of US 41 created a great freeway for motorists speeding through Osprey in route to Venice, but it split the quaint fishing village of Osprey in two, and took away valuable real estate necessary for Osprey’s small –town commercial store fronts, such as Bernie’s Hardware (my first job) or Tachney’s grocery store, to survive. And if the federal highway ‘s impacts were not enough, local governments, including Sarasota County and the Sarasota County School District piled on more. First there was the struggle by Osprey Chamber members and parents to keep one of the last remaining neighborhood schools in Sarasota County from being closed. Osprey Elementary School (we students called it “Osprey Tech”) now the historic Spanish Point visitor’s center was under fire, as it did not Osprey Nokomis Chamber of Commerce
fit the School District’s new model for larger schools. School officials suggested the lack of minority children in the all-white student body, and the age of the building, as reasons to close the school and destroy the building. Then there was the demise of our community youth recreation center and soft ball fields, which were located on the east side of Glenwood Avenue where Church Street intersects. At the time, the park and Osprey’s two churches and two bars (coincidence?), were the heart of Osprey’s social activity. Unfortunately, the County did not see it that way, and sold the land where the ball field and community youth center were to a developer. During these times of division and contention, the Osprey Area Chamber of Commerce kept the community united and reminded us of our roots, and the need to carry on. Osprey has changed a great deal since the 1960’s, but as the French proverb reminds us, “The more things change, the more they stay the same”. Osprey still needs a Chamber of Commerce to advocate for jobs, economic development, infrastructure, and above all else, to tell the tales of our storied past, and rich heritage that distinguish Osprey from any other place.
