OSMELI DELGADO The Heart Series

OSMELI DELGADO The Heart Series

November 2017 NYC

ARTIST STATEMENT

Osmeli Delgado is a Venezuelan artist. Her series explores the symbolism of the heart and its connection to heritage and cultural transmutation. The sculpture becomes the canvas that records transformations over time that result from being in a new culture and reflecting on her own identity from a distance. By transforming the traditional symbol of the heart, she is giving a new shape to a valued religious totem of her home country, thereby communicating to us a continuous search for a personal interpretation and meaning. This layering of the traditional with a new and personal perspective is also reflected in the formal presentation of the pieces: while the shape remains true to exact anatomical features, they are simultaneously abstracted through the many outer transfigurations that the object goes through. She is using a universal symbol and taking ownership of it, personalizing its meaning and at the same time breaking away of cultural assumptions of what this symbol can or should stand for. Thus she constantly walks the line between the traditional and the individual, the accepted and the new interpretation.
