58th Annual Scholarship Awards by Dorothy Berlandi The 58th Annual Scholarship Awards ceremony was held May 19, 2013 at Raffael’s in Walpole, Massachusetts. The awards are sponsored by the Charitable & Educational Trust and the Scholarship Commission. Every year our Charitable and Educational Trust, filial lodges, and individual donors provide over $30,000 to high school seniors who are continuing their education. This is one of the most significant contributions we make as an organization to our community.
This year there were a total of 32 scholarship awarded, 20 given in the name of State Past Presidents and Venerables, and 12 donated by individual members and filial lodges. Scholarship Commission Chairman Donna Giuliani welcomed everyone in attendance, and introduced the Toastmaster for the brunch, State First Vice President Carmelita Bello, who in turn acknowledged the recipients and introduced the invited guests. Our Executive Director Paul Guida called for commencement of the event, introducing the head table and honored guests as they were seated. The colors were posted by the Boston Police Department. Brother Guida asked for a moment of silence for the deceased and injured during the Boston Marathon, and ended his opening with a reminder that we are all “Boston Strong”. Mr. James Geaney led the singing of the Italian and American national anthems and State Chaplain Gregory Mercurio led us in prayer. Commission for Social Justice Chairman Albert DeNapoli, th
Esq. welcomed everyone and thanked the many who had worked so hard to make this breakfast a success. He introduced State President James DiStefano, who welcomed all and noted the importance of this program and the Commission for Social Justice. State President DiStefano also made reference to the Boston Marathon, detailing the scary telephone call from the Watertown police department at 2:00 AM asking all residents to stay in their homes, as one of the suspects in the bombing was known to be in the Watertown area. He specifically noted all the phone calls of support and concern he received during this time from fellow members around the state and country.
