WALK-A-THON by Dorothy Berlandi

The walkers The Charitable and Educational Trust Walk-a-thon was held on Sunday, June 10, 2012 at DCR’s Breakheart Reservation at 177 Forest Street in Saugus, Massachusetts. Although the walking commenced at 10:00 a.m., the committee arrived much earlier to set up for this important walk. The day was perfect for walking and those who attended helped to make it a success. The walkers registered, returning their sponsor lists and monies collected. Each walker received a T-Shirt printed with the names of businesses and individuals who donated to the walk. This year the proceeds from the Walk-a-thon were dedicated directly to the annual scholarships given by the Charitable and Educational Trust. We all know the difficulties we each face during these uncertain economic times, but we must remember the future of our children and the help that we can provide as an organization. At 10:00 a.m. the Chairman of the Walk-a-thon Anthony J. Panaggio, Jr. announced the start of the walk, noting that there would be prizes for the individual and the Lodge that raised the most funds. Additionally, the first young boy, young girl, adult man and adult woman to cross the finish line would receive prizes. Registered were members from surrounding lodges: Granite State (NH), Quincy Men, Stella del Nord (Quincy Ladies), Piave Fiume (Watertown Men), Cornelia dei Gracchi (Watertown Ladies), Peabody Ladies,

Santa Famiglia (Lynn), Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli (Wilmington), South Shore Men (Hingham), Worcester, Figli d’Italia (Saugus), Veturia Romana (Salem), Ambrose D. Cedrone (Newton), Belmont Mixed, Braintree Ladies, and Braintree Juniors. Awaiting the walkers was a very welcoming table with hamburgers and hot dogs with all the fixings, fruits, water, and juices. All the food was donated by members of the committee and various business establishments. We thank Steven Cedrone for doing the cooking, the food was great! Chairman Anthony Panaggio announced the winners. The individual who raised the most was Sister Marisa Ranalli, President of the Braintree Ladies Lodge #1422. The Lodge that collected the most funds was Worcester Lodge #168. The first young boy to complete the walk was Patrick Massey (the grandson of State Second Vice President Antonio Sestito) and the first young girl was Felicia McDevitt (granddaughter of Public Relations Chairman Dorothy Berlandi). The first man to finish was Ed Roche, President of the Quincy Men’s Lodge #1295. There was a tie between Cynthia Ranalli, member of the Braintree Ladies Lodge #1422, and Kristen Fallica from the Veturia Romana Lodge #1200 (Salem) as the first female to finish. State President James DiStefano thanked all the walkers and the committee for their help in making this (Continued on Page 6)

WALK-A-THON FUNDRAISER by Dorothy Berlandi

On Wednesday, June 6, 2012 a fundraiser for the Walk-a-thon was held at The Meat Market in Winthrop, Massachusetts. Immediate Past President Florence Ferullo Kane chaired this very successful event. The success of the annual Walk-a-thon is necessary as the funds from the event are used to support our charities; this year, the money raised will go directly to our scholarship program. Although space was limited, it was a full house for the event. (Continued on Page 6)
