The Ironbound neighborhood in Newark, New Jersey, faces significant environmental challenges due to its proximity to industrial sites and heavy traffic. The area is plagued by diesel emissions, traffic-related pollution, and noise, compounded by historical industrial activities that have contaminated soil and groundwater with toxic substances such as lead, VOCs, and chromium. These conditions have serious health implications, particularly for children and the elderly. Our design seeks to address these issues by implementing effective mitigation strategies that improve environmental quality while ensuring the neighborhood remains a safe and enjoyable place for all residents.
This design proposal envisions a revitalized Ironbound neighborhood where pedestrian pathways intersect with vibrant gardens to address environmental challenges and enhance quality of life
