Golden Eagles shoot just 33.3%, hit one of 15 threepointers to fall out of first in SLC standings

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Junior Christian Key scored a career-high 21 points as Oral Roberts University overcame a rocky first half to dominate Texas A&MCorpus Christi, 58-41, at American Bank Center. The win moves ORU into a tie for first place in the Southland Conference

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Oral Roberts University fell out of first place in the Southland Conference on Saturday afternoon with a 54-47 loss to Sam Houston State. ORU (7-9, 4-2 SLC) shot just 33.3% from the field in the loss. Jaci Bigham led the Golden Eagles with 25 points on 10for-22 shooting, but the rest of the ORU team was just 9-for-35 from the floor. Kevi Luper chipped in 10 points in the loss.

Key was 8-for-13 from the field and 5-for-7 from threepoint range. The career-high performance is the third straight for the Tulsa native after she scored 15 points in a win over Northwestern State on January 10 and 20 in a victory over Stephen F. Austin on January 12.

Britini Martin led the Bearkats (9-9, 5-1 SLC) with 19 points, while Sequeena Thomas added 18 points and 20 rebounds. As a team, Sam Houston St outrebounded the Golden Eagles, 54-36, including 23 offensive rebounds.

Sarah Shelton added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles (7-8, 4-1 Southland Conference), while Jaci Bigham added nine points and seven assists.

Sam Houston took control of the contest with an 8-2 run late in the first half. Two Angela Beadle free throws at the 5:04 mark gave the Bearkats a 23-14 lead.

The Islanders (1-15, 0-5 SLC) were led by Imani Dunn, who entered the game with just three total points on the season but scored 13 on Thursday night. Christian Key got hot at the best possible moment, scoring 16 second half points as ORU rallied to beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

ORU got off to a very slow start but managed to take advantage of Islander turnovers, building a 15-10 lead on a Bigham jumper with 10:30 left in the first half.

But the home team came back. An Ashley Darley layup gave Corpus Christi a 21-20 lead at the 3:20 mark, their first of the game, and they carried a 23-22 advantage into the halftime break. ORU broke out of their malaise to start the second half on the back of Key, who carried the Golden Eagle offense with her outside shooting. The junior hit three of her first four field goal attempts to start the half, including a corner three with 14:02 left to give ORU a 35-27 lead. The largest ORU lead of the game came with 2:33 left, when a Bernadett Balla basket stretched the advantage to 56-38.
