Oral Roberts is just the third school to take the SLC Tournament title in their first season as league members. ORU’s top seed gave them a bye into the tournament semifinals, where they faced two-time defending champion McNeese State. Though Kevi Luper fouled out of the game with 9:54 left, several clutch shots down the stretch from Christian Key carried the Golden Eagles to a 79-66 victory. Luper and Jaci Bigham led ORU with 17 points each, while Key finished with 13. The win booked ORU a spot in the championship game, where fellow regular season champion Sam Houston State was waiting. ORU trailed the Bearkats with five minutes left but took the lead for good on a Savanna Buck jumper with 2:27 remaining. The Golden Eagles held on for a 72-66 victory. Luper scored 26 points in the championship game to earn Tournament MVP honors, while Bigham added 17 points and was an All-Tournament pick.
