MERINO GUARDIAN SHELL is ORTOVOX’s only hardshell with a full merino lining. The 100% merino wool backing ensures excellent temperature management: the wool in the MERINO GUARDIAN SHELL allows moisture to pass through rapidly, which prevents the build-up of an inner layer of moisture and makes the 3L hardshell feel dry on the inside. This feature is particularly important when outside temperatures are low and demanding climbs are making you sweat. While moisture often condenses on the insides of jacket models from other providers, the wool in the MERINO GUARDIAN SHELL allows it to absorb and then slowly release large quantities of moisture. This buffer action supports the Dermizax® EV membrane and enables ideal management of temperature and moisture. The Dermizax® EV functions in the same way as the Dermizax® NX membrane. It is completely waterproof (min. 20,000 mm) and 100 % windproof. It is breathable up to 20,000 g/m²/24 h and therefore perfectly suited for freeriding.

Unlike PTFE membranes, Toray Dermizax® EV is hydrophilic and not hydrophobic. This means that the membrane has no pores. Instead, it is made up of hygroscopic molecules that transport water outwards. It is based on an adaptive breathability concept: The more you sweat, the quicker the moisture is transported out of the jacket. This variability also applies to heat retention: In cold temperatures, the hydrophilic membrane feels warmer than a porous membrane as there are no pores and heat cannot be lost. This temperature regulating effect is intensified by the merino backing on the inside of the jacket. Another advantage of the lack of pores is breathability: in hydrophobic membranes, the build-up of sweat (salt) or dirt can block the pores and reduce breathability. Even with little care, the MERINO GURADIAN SHELL guarantees maximum outward diffusion. Thanks to the Dermizax® EV membrane used in the MERINO GUARDIAN SHELL, the material feels smooth and is stretchy, which means the hardshell will not become stiff, even in cold temperatures. The material can be stretched in all directions, which is often not the case when it comes to other hardshell designs.

DIFFERENCE TO MERINO GUARDIAN SHELL As with the 3L MERINO GUARDIAN SHELL, a high-performance Dermizax® membrane by Toray Schutz provides protection from all weather conditions. But the Dermizax® NX membrane used in the MERINO NAKED SHEEP line boasts even higher values for breathability with a min. of 32,000 g/m²/24h. Unlike in the MERINO GUARDIAN SHELL, ORTOVOX does not use a merino wool lining for the 3L NAKED SHEEP material. Instead, the material is focused upon on what’s important and will impress you with its light weight: 136g/m². Thanks to the 4-way stretch material, the hardshell is also extremely elastic without compromising on its robustness.

PRODUCTS ORTLER

DIFF EREN CE T COMP O ETITO RS

Unlike PTFE membranes, the Dermizax® membrane does not have micropores, but is instead a hydrophilic membrane and its function is based on mobile molecules that allow for high breathability. The hydrophilic molecules in the membrane create an adaptive breathability concept: When you begin to sweat, the inside of the jacket becomes humid. Due to the difference in concentration between the inside and outside, the molecules move more quickly through the membrane and ensure that more moisture makes its way outwards. This mechanism also aids heat retention: If it is cold and you are sweating, no heat can be lost because the membrane has no pores. Another advantage of the lack of pores in the Dermizax® membrane is its high breathability: In hydrophobic membranes, the build-up of sweat (salt) or dirt can block the pores and reduce breathability. This means that even with little care, the MERINO NAKED SHEEP guarantees maximum outward diffusion.

MERINO NAKED SHEEP Light weight, high function: For the MERINO NAKED SHEEP line, ORTOVOX has used Toray’s most high-performance membrane. The Dermizax® NX membrane is wind and waterproof while at the same time extremely breathable (up to 32,000 g/m²/24 h). The 3L hardshell achieves its low weight thanks to the new outer material, at only 136 g/m². material: Directly after the outer material and the membrane comes the SWISSWOOL insulating material. The use of black wool makes the 2L SWISSWOOL BLACK so special: It is seldom used in the industry because white wool is both easier to color and does not show through the outer material when used as a lining. In contrast, black wool is often a “waste product”. Which is why the SWISSWOOL BLACK line, made from the rare wool of black sheep, stands for idealism and individuality.

DIFF ER COMP ENCE TO AR ORTO ABLE PROD VOX UCTS

For the MERINO NATURETEC PLUS line, ORTOVOX uses the c_change™ membrane from schoeller: this active membrane is not just wind and waterproof, but also “intelligent”. Like a pine cone that opens when it’s warm outside and closes when the temperature falls, the membrane also reacts immediately to sweat build-up with special moisture and temperature management. This means the membrane’s molecular structure can adapt to different temperatures. If it’s cold, the polymer structure closes. If the body becomes too hot, it opens in order to regulate temperature and sweat production. This mechanism results in insulation properties that are directly matched to the environmental temperature. Like the Dermizax® membrane, the schoeller’s c_change™ membrane is a non-porous membrane based on an adaptive breathability concept, in which the polymer structure changes in hot and cold temperatures. DIFFERENCE TO MERINO HARDSHELL However, unlike the MERINO HARDSHELL, the MERINO NATURETEC PLUS material is water-resistant (not waterproof) as the seams are not bonded.

PRODUCTS PORDOI

DIFF EREN CE T COMP O ETITO RS

When it comes to softshell jackets, other manufacturers often fall back on a windproof PTFE (polytetrafluorethylene/Teflon®) membrane. This membrane has a microporous structure: sweat passes through the pores of the membrane as water vapor and thus provides a comfortable personal climate. The pores in the PTFE membrane are even larger than those in conventional membranes, so the water vapor molecules can be better transported away. It blocks wind, just like with the c_change™ membrane. The material is water resistant due to the permanent impregnation of the outer material. In comparison, the c_change® membrane is a non-porous membrane. This means that it has no pores. Instead, it is based on a polymer structure that has the advantage of an adaptive breathability concept. The membrane can adjust itself perfectly to hot and cold temperatures. In microporous membranes, the build-up of sweat (salt) or dirt can block the pores and reduce breathability.

100% virgin wool (MERINO) is used on the inside. Polyamide and elastane fibers are combined to make the outer material elastic and robust. This ensemble of fibers makes the fabric elastic, durable and comfortable.

DIFFERENCE TO MERINO NATURETEC AND MERINO NATURETEC LIGHT As in the MERINO NATURETEC LIGHT and MERINO NATURETEC lines, ORTOVOX uses a material composition of polyamide, elastane and merino wool in the MERINO LIGHT SKIN. The difference is in the way that the materials are combined: In the MERINO NATURETEC lines, there is a higher proportion of merino wool on the inside of the fabric (NATURETEC 7% merino wool / NATURETEC LIGHT 18% merino wool). Furthermore, the material is produced by Swiss manufacturer schoeller®. In the MERINO LIGHT SKIN, the material is also woven together so that the merino wool appears on the inside and

polyamide on the outside; however, the proportion of wool is reduced (6% Merino wool). In addition, the material is even lighter than NATURETEC LIGHT without compromising on durability. DIFFERENCE TO MERINO SHIELD TEC Again, there is less Merino wool woven into the inside of the MERINO LIGHT SKIN than in the MERINO SHIELD TEC. The MERINO SHIELD TEC also makes use of scuff-resistant Cordura® to provide sufficient protection for mountaineering and climbing. The MERINO LIGHT SKIN fabric is instead slightly lighter and perfectly suited for touring.

DID YOU KNOW ?

ORTOVOX has trusted in wool since 1988: From the first layer right through to the third, the company does not produce a garment without using nature’s most functional fiber. In 2011, this came to include SWISSWOOL. Not many years ago, small businesses in Switzerland earned very little or no money with sheep’s wool. Due to its characteristics, virgin wool cannot be directly woven and therefore cannot get a competitive price on the market. But thanks to its outstanding thermal properties and comfortable microclimate, this type of wool is the perfect natural, high-quality insulation material. This led to the innovative idea behind SWISSWOOL, which ORTOVOX uses in its insulating products.

PRODUCTS PIZ BERNINA / PIZ BIANCO PIZ GRISCH / PIZ CARTAS ZEBRU JACKET LAVARELLA / PIZ BOÉ PIZ PALÜ PIZ ROSEG LEONE JACKET

In addition to high functionality, SWISSWOOL is also characterized by its regional origins: the German company Baur, where ORTOVOX sources its nonwoven fabrics, places particular importance on sustainable production and regional origins. That is why there are around 25 collection points across Switzerland to which even the smallest wool farms can send their wool. Long transport routes are taboo. ORTOVOX uses three different weights of this fair-trade and functional virgin wool: 60 g/m², 70 g/m², 90 g/m², 120 g/m². In the SWISSWOOL BLACK line, the wool of black sheep is also used: It is seldom used in the industry because white wool is both easier to color and does not show through the outer material when used as a lining. Black wool is often a “waste product”, even though it boasts the same features.

DIFFERENCE FROM 120 MERINO TEC AND 105/145 MERINO ULTRA

Firstly, the material in the MERINO HERITAGE line is woven. In the 120 MERINO TEC, 105 MERINO ULTRA and 145 MERINO ULTRA lines, however, the material is knitted.

Secondly, although a particularly tear-resistant yarn is also used in the 120 MERINO TEC, 105 and 145 MERINO ULTRA lines, this is produced using a different manufacturing technique. Here the merino wool is spun around a stable core of polyamide fibers: CORESPUN TECHNOLOGY BY © SÜDWOELLLE GROUP is used in the 120 TEC LINE. This elaborate spinning process makes it possible to produce fabrics with a smooth appearance and low volume that are light and thin yet also robust. Nuyarn® is used in the 105 and 145 MERINO ULTRA lines. Thanks to the Nuyarn® spinning process, the yarn is more voluminous and elastic yet is still robust and durable. Unlike in these two spinning processes, with BETA-SPUN technology by © SÜDWOLLE GROUP, fine polyamide fibers are spun around a merino wool core. With this protective polyamide coat, the yarn is now over 70 percent more tear-resistant than conventional merino yarn. The yarn that is produced is still so fine that it can be used to produce extremely light yet robust and tear-resistant fabrics. In addition, thanks to the elaborate spinning process, you can also feel the merino fibers on your skin – and experience all the benefits of natural merino wool. This means they begin to smell more quickly. However, the protein molecules in wool give it a natural antibacterial effect, which means that it doesn’t emit any unpleasant odors even after having been worn for a long time. TEMPERATURE REGULATING In contrast to synthetic fibers, Merino wool also has temperature regulating features. This means wool warms when it’s cold and cools when it’s hot. MOISTURE REGULATING In addition, Merino wool can absorb up to 35% of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet to the touch. The fiber surface remains dry, while the moisture moves to the fiber core. In contrast to down or polyester, wool thus feels warm and comfortable even when wet. ILoden has been used since the 10th century. Today this term is used as a collective label for carded woven fabrics – most often made out of wool – with a smooth surface. Loden is made using a fulling process, during which the fabric is thickened to create a denser fabric.

ADVANTAGES OF LODEN • Thanks to its scaly structure and density, loden is wind-resistant. • The woven fabric is robust, durable and long-lasting. • Loden is sustainable and environmentally friendly. STEINER 1888 This Austrian family business has been producing wool into felted woolen fabrics for over 100 years. Even in the early days of alpinism, mountaineers relied upon felted loden clothing produced by this company. MERINO WOOL – EVEN BETTER The high-end yarn structure of Nuyarn® improves the performance and function of the wool. To develop this fiber, the finest Merino wool is spun using an innovative, special spinning process around a core of polyamide filaments. This process makes the yarn more voluminous and elastic. The polyamide used provides stability, robustness and durability. All of this results in a yarn composition that combines all of the positive features of synthetic fibers and Merino wool. ADVANTAGES: •• COMFORTABLE: 39 % more volume at the same weight. Although the yarn weighs the same, it is better at retaining heat. •• ELASTIC: 35 % more stretch and a more stable structure. Thanks to the structure of the yarn, Nuyarn® forms more easily to the body and is more elastic than conventional Merino wool. •• ROBUST: 16 % stronger and less pilling. Nuyarn® has a higher resistance to tearing and abrasion. So it’s the perfect choice for mountaineering, where the material has to be very durable. •• QUICK DRYING: Dries 5x faster Because of the yarn volume in Nuyarn®, water is more quickly absorbed and at the same time moisture is more quickly wicked away. •• NO ODORS: 90 % Merino wool neutralizes odors. ORTOVOX uses the knitted fabric blend of merino wool and the fibers obtained from eucalyptus wood in clothing that requires a cooling effect and functionality. BETA-SPUN technology from Südwolle© Group makes the material scuff-resistant and robust. In this new spinning process, fine polyamide fibers are spun around a merino wool and Tencel core. This protective polyamide sheathing makes the material over 70 percent more tear-resistant. Thanks to the elaborate spinning process, you can also feel the fine merino fibers on your skin – and experience all the benefits of natural merino wool!

HIGH MOISTURE CONTENT One of the reasons for this cooling effect is the natural moisture content in the fiber core, which is higher than that of Merino fibers. SMOOTH SURFACE Another reason is that the Tencel fibers have an even smoother surface, so the material feels cooler on the skin. EVAPORATIVE COOLNESS TencelTM also has quicker drying characteristics than Merino wool. The evaporative coolness that results from drying keeps the body at the ideal temperature, without feeling wet. ODOR NEUTRALIZING Like Merino wool, TencelTM transports moisture into the fiber core, which results in a dry fiber surface – and bacteria has no chance.

ACTIVE RESPONSIBILITY FOR PEOPLE AND ANIMALS ORTOVOX PROTECTS. As our number one brand value, protection is the central focus of all of ORTOVOX’s activities. Here, protection refers not only to products that protect against the elements in dangerous situations on the mountain, but also includes the protection of humans and nature. With the ORTOVOX WOOL PROMISE (OWP), ORTOVOX initiated its own wool standard for the highest quality of animal welfare and sustainable economic management. Based upon the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), the ORTOVOX WOOL PROMISE takes an even more extensive approach to satisfy our company’s high requirements: The OWP focuses upon animal welfare, farm and land management, and slaughter and transport. More than 60 indicators are checked regularly on the farms by a certified, independent auditor. Furthermore, ORTOVOX is working on a certified traceability system that can ensure that only wool from selected farms ends up in ORTOVOX products. The OWP audits are thus just the beginning of the ORTOVOX WOOL PROMISE FRIENDSHIP ORTOVOX knows the farms that produce the merino wool and visit them regularly. Multi-year contracts are concluded with the wool farmers and relationships with wool producers are kept direct and personal. At an annual round table, ORTOVOX brings together the various parties from along the wool supply chain and provides a platform for critical discussion, transparency and new solutions. TRANSPARENCY ALONG THE SUPPLY CHAIN The ORTOVOX WOOL PROMISE provides the necessary TRANSPARENCY for the company, for dealers and for customers: This wool standard ensures that farm production systems fully comply with ORTOVOX’s high quality requirements. From farm and land management, animal welfare and transport through to slaughter: the OWP covers a wide range of SUSTAINABILITY ISSUES in wool production.

ORTOVOX WOOL PROMISE FARM MANAGEMENT ETHICAL MINDSETS, PRACTICES AND TRAINING FOR EMPLOYEES AND MANAGERS All OWP farms offer complete transparency and provide access to all of the relevant facilities and documents. Each person that comes into contact with the sheep has duty of care to the animals and always adheres to the applicable animal welfare and environmental protection laws. The caring and appropriate handling of sheep is compulsory. Even seasonal workers are comprehensively trained. ANIMAL WELFARE NUTRITION, HEALTH, BREEDING, INFRASTRUCTURE, SHEARING AND HANDLING OF SHEEP OWP sheep and livestock farming methods are monitored regularly. This includes the validation of feeding practices, body condition scoring, infrastructural inspection of shelters, sheds and fences, health manage-ment and responsible animal husbandry practices regarding, for example, tagging and castration. Shearing is performed only by experienced shea-rers whose main focus is the wellbeing of the animals. OWP wool comes exclusively from non-mulesinged sheep. LAND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBLE SOIL AND BIODIVERSITY MANAGEMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS OWP farms are very environmentally conscious. All activities are carried out from the point of view of environmental protection. As such, all farmers use soil and health strategies to monitor food sources and soil erosion, among other things. The use of fertilizers and pesticides is very limited and only carried out under supervision. Appropriate allowances are made for nature reserves. TRANPORT AND SLAUGHTER REDUCTIONS IN TRANSPORT AND HUMANE SLAUGHTER METHODS OWP sheep not only provide valuable wool: After they leave the farm, most sheep are transported to abattoirs for slaughter. This aspect is not part of the wool supply chain, but rather concerns the meat processing industry. It therefore presents a major challenge. Transport methods and slaughtering methods are checked at both farm and industrial level for the OWP. Opera-tors are quality tested and use humane slaughtering methods.

MERINO WOOL IS: ODOR NEUTRAL Wool has an anti-bacterial effect, because it isn’t a very “good” breeding ground for odor-forming bacteria. Thanks to the wool’s structure, bacteria struggle to get lodged inside and develop. It is therefore difficult for unpleasant odors to form. When wool is washed, the H2O molecules quickly separate the bacteria. Compared to synthetic functional clothing, it is easier to remove bacteria. Of course, this means that you need to wash your Merino wool t-shirt less often and can instead simply air it outside – the environment will thank you. MOISTURE REGULATING Wool fibers are hydrophilic fibers and therefore extremely functional: They can absorb up to 35% of their own weight in moisture without feeling wet to the touch. The fiber surface remains dry, while the moisture moves to the fiber core. Merino wool is also breathable, which means it can store moisture. While drying on the body, the wool functions like air conditioning and keeps you pleasantly cool in the heat. TEMPERATURE REGULATING Wool fibers cool in the summer and warm in the winter. This smart thermo-regulating feature is based on two principles: wool fibers are naturally crimped, which means they can trap body heat in small air chambers. This air serves as an insulation layer, in both summer and winter, against heat and cold. The second principle is based on cooling by evaporative coolness. Wool can absorb a lot of moisture without feeling wet to the touch. In warm air the moisture dries quickly, resulting in a refreshing evaporative coolness. SOFT Merino wool does not itch! At 18–19 microns (one micron = one-thousandth of a millimeter), the fine wool fibers are so thin that they are well below the human itching threshold – which is around 25 microns. EASY TO CARE FOR When you do have to wash your t-shirt, it’s child’s play: ORTOVOX uses the “Total Easy Care” process for its Merino wool. This means that you can simply wash your product in the machine at 30° or 40° without having to worry that the wool will shrink. For more care tips, for example about the right way to dry your product, the best thing to do is check the information label in every textile product. REGROWS Wool is naturally 100% ecological and therefore super sustainable. Depending on the breed, Merino sheep are shorn once to twice a year – so they automatically grow a new coat. All that is needed for these natural fibers to grow is water, fresh air, sun and tasty grass.

MERINO WOOL STORY ORTOVOX introduced functional merino wool in 1995 – the start of a Bavarian success story. Today our Taufkirchen-based company sources its Tasmanian wool from seven selected farms. A collaboration that has forever been characterized by friendship, transparency and high standards of animal welfare.

SPECIAL FEATURES OF MERINO WOOL In merino wool, nature has created an almost perfect fiber. When we talk about wool, we mean the white hair of the coat (not the guard hair) found above all on sheep. Wool is a 100% sustainable raw material. What’s more, merino wool biodegrades within approximately three months. The quality of the wool is determined by its fibers: The finer and softer the fiber, the higher the quality and the price. Wool fibers are hydrophilic – making them so ETREMELY FUNCTIONAL. Thanks to this high moisture absorbency, functional wool clothing is particularly suited for mountain sports because it warms even when wet and thus offers high safety reserves. What’s more, frequent changes of clothing are rendered unnecessary, because the ANTIBACTERIAL STRUCTURE OF THE WOOL FIBERS prevents unpleasant orders forming. WOOL PRODUCTION: SHEARING, WASHING, TOP MAKING, YARN PRODUCTION During production, coordinated processes intertwine until the sheep’s wool is turned into a high-quality ORTOVOX product. The sheep are shorn by professionals on Tasmanian farms. Once the wool has been packed into balls, it is transported from Tasmania to either Asia or Europe, depending upon the product group. Upon reaching its destination, the wool is put through a multi-step process in which it is washed, combed and prepared for making top. Here, any short wool fibers are combed out in order to ensure that only long, robust fibers remain. The long wool fibers are taken to a spinning mill, where the yarn or woolen thread is produced. This is the result of a special spinning process, which ensures that the finished yarn is nice and even and won’t break at a later stage.

THE BENEFITS OF SWISSWOOL COMPARED TO OTHER ALTERNATIVES ON THE MARKET OTHER WOOL INSULATION •• PIONEER: since 2011, we have been developing SWISSWOOL exclusively for use in mountain sports. •• WOOL QUALITY: the wool of the Swiss alpine sheep is better suited for use in insulating products than any other type. It is coarser and therefore more durable with particularly high resilience. Insulating air pockets are better preserved. •• RICH VARIETY: four different fleece thicknesses for many different areas of use. •• DURABILITY: polylactide fibers are mixed equally with the wool and give the fleece more stability after thermal treatment. •• SHORT TRANSPORTATION ROUTES: the fleece is produced in Europe. •• EASY TO CARE FOR: SWISSWOOL is machine washable.

DOWN •• RESISTANT TO MOISTURE: SWISSWOOL warms even when wet while providing a comfortable microclimate. If it becomes wet, it dries quickly and simply without clumping – with no need for a tumble dryer. •• ODOR: odor-forming bacteria are chemically bound by the wool fibers and therefore isolated. •• DRYING TIME: dries quickly. •• COLD BRIDGES: wool fleece is made up of complete layers that prevent the material from gathering in one place and creating cold bridges. •• ANIMAL WELFARE: shearing is a natural process that does not particularly stress the animals. •• SPACE TO ROAM: the sheep enjoy expansive space to roam in their natural habitat.

POLYESTER •• W ET: SWISSWOOL warms even when wet. •• TEMPERATURE MANAGEMENT: wool is comfortable at a broader range of temperatures and does not feel stuffy, even when very warm. •• THE PERFECT MICROCLIMATE: wool can absorb up to 35% of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet to the touch. •• SUSTAINABLE: SWISSWOOL makes use of natural resources. •• REGIONALITY: any wool farmer can sell their wool to SWISSWOOL. •• ODOR NEUTRALIZING: the protein molecules in SWISSWOOL destroy odor-forming bacteria. This means that clothes do not smell, even after tours lasting several days.

SWISSWOOL STORY Born out of a pioneering spirit and shaped by our innovative strength, ORTOVOX introduced the first highly functional SWISSWOOL products in 2011 – and in doing so offered a sustainable alternative to down and polyester insulation. The special features of these natural fibers are their outstanding thermal properties and excellent climate control, as well as a sustainable regional origin. However, this high-quality wool is much more than just insulation material – it tells the unique story of the people and the sheep living in the Swiss Alps. THE SWISSWOOL INITIATIVE It was not many years ago that Swiss sheep farmers could hardly earn a living from their sheep’s wool. Due to the texture of its fibers, Swiss virgin wool cannot be spun directly and was thus not a competitive option in the global market. The SWISSWOOL initiative was founded with the aim of saving this TRADITIONAL TYPE OF ALPINE FARMING. SWISSWOOL is an initiative that supports regional Alpine farming and pays a FAIR PRICE for NATURAL WOOL. In numerous Swiss valleys, around 25 collection stations have now been set up, where sheep farmers can deliver the wool from their animals twice a year. In this way, more than 300 metric tons of fair-trade wool is collected every year. MADE IN EUROPE The production of SWISSWOOL products is carried out entirely in Europe. After collection, the bales of wool make their way to Belgium. This is the only place where there are unique machines that can rid the wool of natural stains using only soap and soda. Next, the wool is given its gentle anti-felting finish. In the German town of Dinkelsbühl the wool is then mixed with 12% IngeoTM – a corn-based bi-component fiber – so that the wool remains stable, even when washed. Next, the wool is opened, carded, cross-laid, and thermally stiffened. The finished lengths of fleece, which are produced by ORTOVOX in four thicknesses/weights (60 g/m², 70 g/m², 90 g/m² and 150 g/m²), are then used at various locations in Europe to make highly functional insulation products.

TENCELTM IN COMPARISON WITH SYNTHETIC AND NATURAL FIBERS LONG-TERM ORGANIC PRODUCTION Synthetic fibers, but also natural fibers such as cotton, negatively affect the environment. To ensure that future generations can also enjoy an intact natural world, we at ORTOVOX place great importance on the eco-balance of our fibers. Compared to cotton, TencelTM is a fine example of this: the fiber yield of TencelTM is up to ten times higher than that of cotton – only one t-shirt can be made from 6m² of cotton, but ten t-shirts can be made from the same amount of TencelTM. Furthermore, cotton needs 10 to 20 times more water, often requires the use of pesticides, and takes up large areas that could otherwise be used for growing food.

BENEFITS OF TENCELTM SUSTAINABLE FIBER PRODUCTION MERINO COOL combines the finest merino wool and the natural fiber TENCELTM. The cellulose required to produce the fiber is obtained from sustainably cultivated eucalyptus wood. This wood grows particularly quickly and is planted at FSC‑certified wood farms without any genetic modification or artificial irrigation. A COMPLETE CYCLE What makes the TENCELTM production procedure so pioneering is the environmentally-friendly, complete production cycle. Other than wood and water, a solvent is the only thing needed to produce the fiber. Even this can be almost 100% recycled so that no pollutants damage the environment or remain in the fiber. The production process has received the ‘European Award for the Environment’ from the European Union.

EVEN MORE FUNCTIONALITY LONG-LASTING The smooth surface and uniform fiber structure make TENCELTM a particularly stabile fiber. This becomes evident thanks to the high restistance to pilling and tearing. ODOR NEUTRALIZING Odor bacteria require a damp fiber surface to develop. The TENCELTM fiber transports moisture straight into the fiber core, keeping the fiber surface dry. As bacteria need moisture to grow, up to 2000 times less bacteria grow on TENCELTM than on synthetic fibers! NATURAL FIBERS TencelTM is developed in harmony with nature and isn’t contaminated with pesticides, agricultural chemicals or any other pollutants. The raw material used in the fiber, cellulose, is obtained from eucalyptus wood in an extremely environmentally friendly manufacturing process. MOISTURE REGULATING TENCELTM fiber is based on the same functional mechanisms as Merino wool. It can absorb huge amounts of moisture while the fiber surface still remains dry. Nanofibrils, a network of sub-microscopic channels, quickly and evenly direct the moisture into the fiber core.

TENCELTM NATURAL FIBERS WITH COOLING EFFECT In various mountainwear lines ORTOVOX combines merino wool with TENCELTM: TENCELTM is a natural cellulose fiber made from the raw material eucalyptus wood and boasts both functional and cooling properties. TENCELTM is a brand of Lenzing AG and was created in 1992. The cellulose fiber is perfectly complemented by merino wool. Both fibers are odor neutralizing, thermo- and moisture-regulating, as well as extra soft. ORTOVOX has been using this natural fiber combination since 2011, primarily for its cooling properties.

THE FUNCTIONS OF TENCELTM MOISTURE CONTENT The higher the natural moisture content in the fiber core, the more refreshing a fiber feels! The basic moisture content of TENCELTM is 13% - compared to Polyester’s content of just 1%. As TENCELTM is hydrophilic, the fiber surface remains dry and feels pleasantly cool but not damp. EVAPORATIVE COOLNESS TENCELTM dries extremely quickly. The evaporative coolness generated during the drying process maintains the body at an ideal temperature without it feeling damp. The positive consequences are additional performance and greater comfort. GENTLY COOLING The smoother the fiber surface, the cooler the feel. Compared with the rippled surface of cotton, TENCELTM has a great deal more contact with the skin and therefore feels cooler.
