This winter, Orono Community Education will be expanding to an additional location with several staff moving to the new Orono Activities Center. Much of our current office space in the Education Link was converted into an additional elementary classroom over the summer. In addition, the Community Education Department will be coordinating classes and programs held at the new Activities Center, so some staff will be on site to facilitate programs. The Orono Activities Center will allow for many new class opportunities that we did not have space for previously – especially for adults! As our staff moves take place, we will do our best to keep you – our customers – informed of changes. The list on the left of the page gives the primary location for each person on our staff. Orono Education Link – Primary registration location Orono Activities Center – Secondary registration location Orono Discovery Center – Early Learning programs Orono Student Center – School Age Child Care programs

An additional operational change is that all Orono Schools facility use and rental requests are now being managed by the school district’s Activities Center Manager, Marie Moore. All memberships to the Activities Center will also be processed by the Activities Center Manager. Additional membership information is available on the Orono Schools website under the Activities Center tab, or turn to page 18 in this brochure to learn more! The Orono Community Education staff is proud of the many programs and enrichment opportunities that are detailed in these pages. As always, we are happy to hear your ideas for the classes and programs you would like to see offered in the future - for youth and adults. We hope that you will find activities to make 2019 a year of learning, creating healthy habits and forming new friendships and relationships!

Sports for All

Orono Community Education is developing a new recreation program! The Sports for All program is for schoolage students interested in a sports activity that is less intensive than joining a team and will allow more time for homework and family. This is an opportunity to try a variety of sports all in one program. It is designed similar to an open gym, but with more structure. Everyone that attends will play. Kids get to choose the sport (basketball, volleyball, kickball, floor hockey, etc.) and will be split into younger and older age groups. Parents can cheer or choose to play too. The focus will be on fun, physical fitness, sportsmanship and inclusion. Dates and times will be planned with those who register. We anticipate starting in February. All abilities are welcome! Early Learning Mission & Philosophy Orono Early Learning strives to provide every child with a valuable, safe and developmentally appropriate learning experience. In developing young minds, we recognize the importance of collaboration among parents and teachers and therefore we cultivate open, mutually-respectful and communicative relationships with parents. By holding ourselves to high standards of excellence, we can help each child develop a love for learning which they will keep with them far beyond their Orono Schools experience. Parent & Child Classes Why ECFE?

Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) is a program for all Minnesota families with children between the ages of birth to Kindergarten entrance. The program is offered through Minnesota public school districts. ECFE is based on the idea that the family provides a child’s first and most significant learning environment, and parents are a child’s first and most important teachers. ECFE works to strengthen families. ECFE’s goal is to enhance the ability of all parents and other family members to provide the best possible environment for their child’s learning and growth (Minnesota Department of Education).

What does a typical ECFE class include? Parent-Child Activity Time where families explore a classroom filled with developmentally-appropriate play and learning activities planned by a licensed early childhood teacher. Parent-Child Circle Time where parents help their children with their first experiences in a large group activity at school. ECFE teachers are famous for the fun and creative ways they encourage language, music and imagination. Parent Discussion Time where parents meet with a licensed parent educator to share support, experiences and information about child development and parenting techniques. Children’s Activity Time where children learn with early childhood staff and practice social skills as they interact with each other.

Class Definitions

Non-Separating: Parents stay with children the entire class. Separating: Parent discussion time is held in a separate room. Some classes will transition to separating.

Sibling Care

You must pre-register and pre-pay for sibling care for parent-child classes. Register online at www.oronocommunityed.com. Please include the names and ages of children needing sibling care. Our goal is to provide safe, reliable and fun care for your children while you attend ECFE offerings Sibling care is not available for Mixed Ages ECFE classes.

Tuition

Tuition for ECFE parent-child classes is based on household income and is on a sliding fee scale.

Sliding Fee Scale for Parent-Child Classes Fees must never be the reason you don't attend ECFE! Please call if fees are difficult to pay at this time. The Minnesota state legislature requires all ECFE programs to utilize a sliding fee scale based on household income. Orono has traditionally kept fees as low as possible. Please note that these fees will be due monthly, October through May. Annual Family Gross Income $95,000 + $75,000-$94,999 $60,000-$74,999 $45,000-$59,999 $25,000-$44,999 Under $24,999 Sibling Care monthly cost Before Preschool Sibling Care

What happens during an Early Childhood Screening appointment? A trained professional will check: vision* and hearing; large and small muscles; height and weight; health and immunization; social and emotional development; thinking, language and communication skills. Appointments last approximately one hour. Contact us to set up your child’s screening appointment. Call 952-746-5815 or email ecscreening@orono.k12.mn.us If your child is age 4 and has not been screened or has already participated in another school district’s screening process, please call and notify us. *Screening includes a vision screening that helps detect potential eye problems but is not a substitute for a comprehensive eye exam.
