welcomes you!

a season

for new learning...

Fall is an exciting time with a new school year beginning and families settling into their routine after a busy summer of fun and learning. This summer, 1,659 youth participated in over 450 camps and classes offered by Orono Community Education! We strongly believe in helping students have a great summer and preventing the “summer slide” so students can return to school confident and ready to start the next year at their best! Some new and exciting programs for youth include Yoga for Kids, School-Time Super Hero theater class, Spartan Power for male and female athletes, and Disney Jr.’s Aladdin drama production for middle school students. You can find youth offerings on pages 24 - 39 of this brochure. Adults can look forward to new and unique classes like Acupuncture & Cupping, China: Language and Culture, Going Zero Waste, Holiday Wreath Workshop, Pickleball and many more! You can find adult offerings on pages 4 - 17 of this brochure. Each season brings its own unique learning opportunities, and as soon as one season is planned - our staff begin planning for the next! We value input from our community, and there are many ways you can give it. Remember to fill out the end-of-class surveys via email after you take a Community Education program. We read all of your feedback and suggestions. Consider joining the Community Education Advisory Council to be the first to hear about new ideas and help shape all of our programs. You can also contact any of our staff directly to offer suggestions (see list at left). This fall, approximately 400 school district residents will be selected to participate in a survey to gather information regarding the programs you value, barriers to participation and ideas for how Orono Community Education can better meet the needs of our community in the future. We’ll be sure to share results of this effort. We hope that you will find opportunities for new learning and connections with others through Community Education offerings. It is one of the best things you can do for your mind, body and overall health. Orono Community Education is proud to be your partner in lifelong learning! Enjoy the fall!

Parenting & Family GROWING UP DIGITAL - SPEAKER EVENT

Presented by Karen Pennaz, Parent Educator

You are the first generation of parents to be challenged with raising children in a digital and screen-consumed age and this digital lifestyle is not going anywhere. How do we ensure that non-digital relationships are always more important? The average 8 to 18-year-old spends 53 hours a week on screens! That is more than a full-time job and probably more time than they spend sleeping. The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) encourages parents to help their children develop healthy media use habits early on. We don’t yet understand the full neurological impact of screens on our little learners but we do know young, developing brains are overstimulated by noise and light. We also know that whatever the brain does a lot of, it gets good at, and kids learn best with minds on, hands on and feelings on. We will spend time discussing the latest research, building positive habits, balancing coping skills, creating tech-free zones and times, the 3 C’s (content, context and the child), screen impact on executive functioning skills, choosing apps, and how to avoid using technology to calm kids down. The focus will be on the core ingredients for healthy development in the digital age: relationships and modeling, play and practice, and boundaries and routine. As parents, we must be emotionally available, set clear limits and guidance, ensure our kids get adequate sleep and exercise and model good screen habits.
