ECFE - Preschool - Child Care

Fall 2019

Where the

STORY begins!

Welcome The first chapter in your students’ school story! ONCE UPON A TIME...there was a young child who was supported by a loving family. This family was supported very early on in this child’s life by a wonderful community that understood the importance of connections and relationships. This support started within the walls of a beautiful brick school building. Within these walls were educators and caregivers with a passion for fostering children’s development in a nurturing and engaging environment full of intentional, playful activities. These individuals knew that play was the work of children and that it is through play where children learn about feelings, how to share, how to express themselves, how to experiment and take risks, and how to develop a love for learning with a solid foundation for future academic success. These people also knew that a family is the child’s first and most important teacher, and so, they provided support through Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) classes. This beautiful brick school building was called Orono Early Learning. And this child...this child went on to make their mark in the world! Welcome to Orono Early Learning!

Parent & Child Classes Why ECFE?

Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) is a program for all Minnesota families with children between the ages of birth to Kindergarten entrance. The program is offered through Minnesota public school districts. ECFE is based on the idea that the family provides a child’s first and most significant learning environment, and parents are a child’s first and most important teachers. ECFE works to strengthen families. ECFE’s goal is to enhance the ability of all parents and other family members to provide the best possible environment for their child’s learning and growth (Minnesota Department of Education).

What does a typical ECFE class include?

Parent-Child Activity Time where families explore a classroom filled with developmentally-appropriate play and learning activities planned by a licensed early childhood teacher. Parent-Child Circle Time where parents help their children with their first experiences in a large group activity at school. ECFE teachers are famous for the fun and creative ways they encourage language, music and imagination. Parent Discussion Time where parents meet with a licensed parent educator to share support, experiences and information about child development and parenting techniques. Children’s Activity Time where children learn with early childhood staff and practice social skills as they interact with each other.

Class Definitions

Non-Separating: Parents stay with children the entire class. Separating: Parent discussion time is held in a separate room. Some classes will transition to separating.

Sibling Care

You must pre-register and pre-pay for sibling care for parent-child classes. Register online at Please include the names and ages of children needing sibling care. Our goal is to provide safe, reliable and fun care for your children while you attend ECFE offerings. Note: sibling care is not available for Mixed Ages ECFE classes.

Tuition for ECFE parent-child classes is based on household income and is on a sliding fee scale.

Sliding Fee Scale for Parent-Child Classes Fees must never be the reason you don't attend ECFE! Please call if fees are difficult to pay at this time. The Minnesota state legislature requires all ECFE programs to utilize a sliding fee scale based on household income. Orono Early Learning has traditionally kept fees as low as possible. Please note that these fees will be due monthly, October through May. Annual Family Gross Income $95,000 + $75,000-$94,999 $60,000-$74,999 $45,000-$59,999 $25,000-$44,999 Under $24,999

Presented by Karen Pennaz, Parent Educator

You are the first generation of parents to be challenged with raising children in a digital and screen-consumed age and this digital lifestyle is not going anywhere. How do we ensure that non-digital relationships are always more important? The average 8 to 18-year-old spends 53 hours a week on screens! That is more than a full-time job and probably more time than they spend sleeping. The AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) encourages parents to help their children develop healthy media use habits early on. We don’t yet understand the full neurological impact of screens on our little learners but we do know young, developing brains are overstimulated by noise and light. We also know that whatever the brain does a lot of, it gets good at, and kids learn best with minds on, hands on and feelings on. We will spend time discussing the latest research, building positive habits, balancing coping skills, creating tech-free zones and times, the 3 C’s (content, context and the child), screen impact on executive functioning skills, choosing apps, and how to avoid using technology to calm kids down. The focus will be on the core ingredients for healthy development in the digital age: relationships and modeling, play and practice, and boundaries and routine. As parents, we must be emotionally available, set clear limits and guidance, ensure our kids get adequate sleep and exercise and model good screen habits.

Orono Schools Early Learning: Our Mission and Philosophy Orono Early Learning strives to provide every child with a valuable, safe and developmentally-appropriate learning experience. In developing young minds, we recognize the importance of collaboration among parents and teachers and, therefore, we cultivate open, mutually-respectful and communicative relationships with parents. We build a solid foundation for each child’s school and life success by helping them gain key social, emotional, academic, physical and creative skills. By holding ourselves to high standards of excellence, we can help each child develop a love for learning, which they will keep with them far beyond their Orono Schools experience.
