ECFE - Preschool - Child Care

GROWING for the future

FALL 2017

welcome Grow with us toward school success! Orono Early Learning staff are very excited for the 2017-18 school year! We know how important the early years of childhood are for children, families and communities. We know that young children learn through play, exploration and meaningful interactions with adults. We understand how important high-quality child care is to the health and success of our community, that learning to read and write doesn’t start in Kindergarten, and that by the time a child turns three the foundation for life-long learning has been set. Orono Schools recognizes that every family wants a superior education for their child, and Orono Early Learning is here to support families from the start. Children who are involved in strong early childhood experiences are 80% more likely to graduate from high school and are able to earn 2x the income of those who do not. The early childhood years are an important time of growth and development. Our offerings are designed to support families through every stage of these early years. • • • • •

ECFE parent-child classes have helped 96% of parents feel more confident in their parenting role starting at birth. School year Preschool classes are offered for children age 2 through Pre-Kindergarten. The Clubhouse is a great way to introduce your child to school starting at 18 months. Discovery Kids child care is offered year-round to support working parents with children 6 weeks to Kindergarten. Many classes have a sliding fee scale and there are scholarships available for Preschool.

Now is the time to register for the 2017-18 school year. Come grow with us!

parent & child classes What does a typical ECFE class include? Parent-Child Activity Time where families explore a classroom filled with developmentally appropriate play and learning activities planned by a licensed early childhood teacher. Parent-Child Circle Time where parents help their children with their first experiences in a large group activity at school. ECFE teachers are famous for the fun and creative ways they encourage language, music and the imagination. Parent Discussion Time where parents meet with a licensed parent educator to share experiences and information about child development and parenting techniques. Children’s Activity Time where children learn with the licensed early childhood teachers/staff and practice social skills as they interact with each other.

Class Definitions

Non-Separating: Parents stay with children the entire class. Separating: Parent discussion time is held in a separate room. Some younger classes will transition to separating.

Sibling Care

Our goal is to provide safe, reliable and fun care for your children while you attend ECFE offerings. *Sibling care is not available for Mixed Ages ECFE classes.

Confident Parenting using Love & Logic®

Presented by Karen Pennaz, Parent Educator

Ditch the nagging, drop the threats and lose the stress. You can raise great kids with techniques that are practical, proven and fun! Children learn the best lessons when they’re given a task and allowed to make their own choices (and fail) when the cost of failure is still small. Children’s failures must be coupled with love and empathy from their parents and teachers. Love and logic uses humor, hope and empathy to build the adult/child relationship. It emphasizes respect and dignity for both children and adults, provides real limits in a loving way and teaches consequences and healthy decision-making.

Presented by Karen Pennaz, Parent Educator Many parents feel that it is their job to make sure their children are happy instead of capable. When parents give children too much stuff, do things for children that they can do for themselves, give them experiences that are not age-appropriate, do not expect children to do chores, do not have set rules and let children run the family, parents are overindulging. Teach children the difference between wants and needs, help your kids cultivate patience; give them opportunities to develop responsibility, selfdiscipline, integrity. Saying “no” is a parenting strategy.

Orono Schools Early Learning: Our Mission and Philosophy Orono Early Learning strives to provide every child with a valuable, safe and developmentally appropriate learning experience. In developing young minds, we recognize the importance of collaboration among parents and teachers and, therefore, we cultivate open, mutually respectful and communicative relationships with parents. We build a solid foundation for each child’s school and life success by helping them gain key social, emotional, academic, physical and creative skills. By holding ourselves to high standards of excellence, we can help each child develop a love for learning, which they will keep with them far beyond their Orono Schools experience.
