CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, here’s your weekly dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary nick name. Key West, Florida is the home of The Fighting Conch’s. The shoreline is filled with the sea conch, and those in surrounding waters are protected. While the athletic teams are known as the Fighting Conch’s, their girls drill team are known as the Conchettes, and the cement used in the Florida Keys is known as “Conchcrete”. In Key West when a baby is born, a conch shell is placed on a stick outside. If it is point end up, it is a boy. If it is open end up, it is a girl. Key West High has an enrollment of 1213 in grades 9-12. (634 were represented by a conch with the point end up and 579 were represented by a conch with the point end down). I wonder if any of the Key West English classes read William Golding’s “Lord of The Flies”. Remember Piggy? Remember the Conch—more importantly, remember what happened to it? Yikes!
