MESSAGE The SCC is delighted to welcome you and our tennis stars from around the world. We thank you for your presence this weekend. The event is a celebration of tennis at the SCC and begins at the start of a New Year which continues to see many positive changes within the tennis section. Since September last year the club has had its first full time coach; Dennis Simsek, most of you will know Dennis already and we are appreciative of the efforts he and Coaching Developments have made already. The focus of the coaching is the junior academy and this is progressing nicely. We have made a conscious effort to encourage more junior sports members at the club; who will play for us and benefit from the club for life. The Coach and coaching programs is a firm commitment from the club to improve all our members standard of tennis. So if you are even thinking about playing; now you have no excuses, get on the court! This tournament showcases many events including juniors and adults alike who will be receiving coaching from our Stars in the morning. There will be many exhibition matches including juniors, pros and the stars. Additionally, please do not forget about the Pro Am which is taking place over Saturday and Sunday. You will see the stars are all eager to play
with you, so open up those wallets (drink more if required) and bid on your favourite. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to play with some of the all-time greats. Please refer to the schedule for more information. The agenda for the weekend is fun; so please bring your family as short tennis for the kids with coaches is available during the day. The BBQ by the courts on Saturday evening watching our stars in action will be a highlight… with as much “hotdogging” on the court as off! This event would not have happened without our sponsors who I would like to thank for making this happen. The event has taken a long time to plan and without your financial backing from the outset this event would never have gotten off the ground. Many thanks again to all! The event of course would not be billed accordingly without our Stars; so from the Tournament Committee and the Club many thanks for your attendance. Ilie, Mansour, Henri, Paul and Jacco we hope you have a blast! Particular mention must be made to our own honorary member Vijay whose assistance and patience is greatly appreciated. This would not have happened without you!
Matthew Dabbs Tournament Chairman
would like to thank the Tournament Committee, particularly Kevin (Coaching Developments) and Tracy- you’re both stars too! And of course the SCC, the General Committee and all the club staff involved – special note to Stefanie, great job! This tournament will be a yearly event - I have promised Vijay. So let’s make this a continuous success as we want to see many stars play on those courts just outside the window; hopefully, including some home grown ones too! And finally to the dinner. I hope you enjoy the food, beverages and evenings activities. Everyone please enjoy !

He beat the best, including John McEnroe at his peak in 1984 (in the first round in Cincinnati). He had five career wins over Jimmy Connors in their 11 matches. PROFILE MANSOUR BAHRAMI As a child in Iran, Mansour Bahrami worked as a tennis ball boy. Unable to afford a racket of his own, he improvised with frying pans, and broom handles to teach himself the game. Bahrami has often commented that his outrageous shot making ability resulted from mastering tennis using such unusual ‘equipment’. Bahrami had a 24-15 Davis Cup record for his native country, but his career was brought to a halt when the Islamic Revolution led to the banning of professional sport in Iran. He set off for France with his life savings to try to make a career in tennis. He moved to Paris in 1981 but his career was still severely hampered because of travel restrictions imposed on his Iranian passport. However, at 33, he reached the doubles final with Eric Winogradsky at the 1989 French Open, losing to Jim Grabb and Patrick McEnroe. With his astounding array of shots and flamboyant skills, Bahrami, who has never had a coach in his career, is regarded as a great entertainer by tennis crowds around the world. He is always the showman of the game. As he says: “My tennis and my expressions just make people laugh.”

Nastase was the World No. 1 tennis player between 1973 and 1974 He won the Tennis Masters Cup tournament (today ATP World Tour Finals) four times, in 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1975. Only Roger Federer (6 times), Pete Sampras and Ivan Lendi (5 times) succeeded to win more. He is one of the five tennis players (third place) in the world who won more than 100 pro titles (57 singles and 45 doubles) according to the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) website though there are many titles that are not included in the ATP statistics. (see Career statistics section). He was the first professional sports figure to sign an endorsement contract with Nike in 1972.

Dennis Simsek Biography Dennis hails from Vancouver B.C., Canada, where he started playing tennis at the age of four. Coached by his father, Dennis immediately had an aptitude for the sport, playing his first U10 tournament at the age of seven. This began a very successful junior tennis career, highlighted by winning the 1994 U14 Canadian Junior Championships, as well as reaching the fourth round of the Junior Orange Bowl in Boca Raton, Florida that same year, losing in the fourth round to Spanish great Juan Carlos Ferrero. Dennis continued his success, winning the 1996 U16 Junior National Championships and competed on the Canadian Junior Davis Cup team. Dennis’ coaching career began in 1999 at the Grant Connell Tennis Centre in Vancouver, B.C. He also continued playing competitively, reaching the ranking of number 12 in Canadian Men’s tennis by the time he was 21. In 2004, Dennis travelled to Ojai, California, and directed the progressive tennis program at the Weil Tennis Academy, coaching from the ages of four to fourteen. He also worked as a hitting partner to many top ITF junior players at this time. At the age of 27, Dennis spent six months in Turkey playing Division One Club tennis, and was called up to play on the Turkish Davis Cup team. He was the assistant pro for that same team. That year, Dennis went to Milan, Italy, and became the head pro at the Bollate Tennis Club. He remained there for two years. Dennis came back to Canada in 2009 and began coaching at The Tennis Academy in Calgary Alberta. He directed the high performance junior programs, as well as coaching several adult clients. While at the Academy, Dennis coached notable Canadian female player Nicole Smith, travelling with her as far as Melbourne and the Australian Open Championships. He has recently accompanied top Canadian junior player Harrison Scott to ITF tournaments in Havana, Cuba and Nassau, Bahamas. Recently, Dennis achieved a career high ATP World Tour Ranking at the F6 Winnipeg Futures tournament. He brings to the Singapore Cricket Club a wealth of experience in playing and coaching tennis. He excels at breaking down the game and highlighting for his clients what they can do to improve every shot. He is excellent with children and makes tennis fun for everyone, regardless of their level of play. In the future, Dennis would like to continue making tennis accessible for everyone by mentoring other coaches, helping to bring their experiences to the court in the same way that he does, and is looking forward to the challenge of making the Singapore Cricket Club Asia’s destination for great tennis.
