Welcome to Morzine and the Portes du Soleil Whether you’ve been to Morzine before or you're a first timer, you won’t be disappointed this week. Our village sits at the heart of the enormous Portes du Soleil ski area, which includes a staggering 650km of piste and 12 ski resorts spread over two countries. That is a serious amount of snowy space to play in and it makes Morzine perfect for Basscamp. On the Pleney side of the resort, Morzine is neighbored by Les Gets and on the opposite side via the Super Morzine lift you can head directly to Avoriaz. Les Gets is great for wide tree-lined blue and red runs in the Ranfolly Bowl. Head to Avoriaz for more challenging terrain, the legendary ecofreestyle park that is the Burton Stash and onwards into Switzerland. You can pick up Portes du Soleil piste maps at Basscamp HQ. We’re really lucky to have a brand new swimming pool and spa facility in Morzine this winter, just under the Super Morzine bridge. The pool is open from 12.30pm until 7.30pm each day during the festival – it’s the perfect place to recharge those dancing batteries!
Check out our map on page 12 for all the Basscamp venues. You’ll see that everything is really close together, which again makes Morzine perfect for Basscamp. What you also need to know… Basscamp HQ is located at Le Tremplin at the bottom of the Pleney homerun. Come here to collect your festival wristbands and to buy your day passes and festival hoodies, t-shirts and beanies. HQ is open on Sunday between 10am and 8pm, then from Monday to Thursday between 12noon and 8pm. The lift pass offices at the bottom of the Pleney and Super Morzine lifts open at 8.30am each day and close at 4.30pm. Don’t take your wristband off once you’ve got it. It’ll get you special prices on food drinks and other things in lots of venues around Morzine as well as access to all of the Basscamp venues. For full details of the discounts we’ve arranged for you see page 18.
You’ll get your bearings easily in Morzine – the centre of the village is really easy to negotiate.

From Bestival to Morzine… The Correspondents are one of the big headline acts playing at the Basscamp Festival so we thought we’d introduce them to you now… Hello boys. Describe your style of music in 10 words or less. Mr Bruce: Tricky - we really struggle with this one and still don’t have a polished sound bite... Chucks: Multi-genre dance stompy sweat-fest extravaganza. Sounds delicious. We've done our research and you put on quite a show. What's the biggest audience you've ever performed in front of? Chucks: Got to have been Bestival 2 years ago. On before Mumford & Sons to about 1000 Correspondents fans and about 19000 Mumford & Sons fans! Mr B: We returned to Bestival last year and played to a crowd of 10,000 for our midday Friday slot. I think there was nothing else on so we were their only option! I’m sure that’s not the case. Have you performed at a winter music festival before? Chucks: Yeah I think we might have fraternised with the enemy a few times... Mr B: Came totally unprepared. Snow blindness and slippiness.
And you won’t be far wrong! Have you been to Morzine before and do either of you ski or snowboard?
premium continental lager please. Mr B: Single Malt Scotch straight unless they do a really decent old fashioned.
Mr B: I’ve skied once. I know how to go down the mountain and how to do a snow plough stop. Chucks: No not yet, done a bit of skiing before but wouldn’t say I “ski” per se. Each day of the Basscamp Festival has a fancy dress theme and your night is 80's night. Have you got your outfits planned? Mr B: The usual spandex futuristic matador affair that I could pass off as any era! What was the highlight of 2011 for you? Chucks: Actually releasing 2 records! Mr B: Ditto. And couple of unforgettable crowd surfs. What are you guys most looking forward to in 2012? Other than the Basscamp Festival of course...
Then you’ve got no excuse this time! What sort of crowd do you expect when you come to Morzine for the Basscamp Festival?
Chucks: Finally getting an album together for one. I dunno, the Olympics? Ha. Mr B: I can’t for the life of me think why we haven’t been asked to do the opening ceremony- I dress like most of the competitors.
Chucks: Varying degrees of altitude sickness and drunkenness.
Cheers boys, if we spot you at the bar, what are you having? Chucks: A pint of medium strength

Stay safe We’ll be right there with you having a banging time this week, but it’s worth taking note of the following safety points to get the most out of Basscamp… DRUNKS - if the police find you drunk and disorderly, or under the influence of drugs, you’ll probably spend the night at the police station. Moderation kids… DRUGS - not tolerated, no exceptions. You’ll loose your wristband for good if festival staff or the police find you with drugs CHILL OUT - don’t get irritated if you get pushed in a crowd or if someone steps on your toes. Your at a festival - keep it cool MONEY - only carry the cash you need each day and night. Leave the rest locked away in your accommodation DRINKS - don’t leave them unattended, even soft drinks can be spiked SKIS & SNOWBOARDS - can get nicked if you leave them somewhere stupid out of sight. Keep them close by or locked up EMERGENCY - the number for mountain rescue is +33 (0) 4 50 74 11 13. Memorise it or save it in your phone. The international number for emergency assistance from your mobile is 112. If you need to speak to the Basscamp Team in an emergency call: +33 (0)7 87 36 76 94. LOST PROPERTY - if you find any lost property please bring it to Basscamp HQ at Le Tremplin. If you loose anything, come see us at Basscamp HQ CLOTHING - it’ll be mighty cold when your walking home from any of our late night Basscamp venues. Always take a coat out with you, regardless of the daytime temperatures. We are in the Alps… THE SUN - your skin absorbs 80% more UV rays than usual when you’re on snow. Keep topping up your suntan lotion during the day WATER - riding every day and boozing every night will make you hydrated. Then you’ll have less fun. Keep your water levels topped up FIS CODE OF CONDUCT - we want everyone to ride safely. You’ll find the 10 points of the FIS code of conduct on the Basscamp website.

e d i u g e u n e v le tremplin
Right at the bottom of the Pleney homerun and home to Basscamp HQ, Le Tremplin is the usual venue for Morzine’s biggest and best weekly winter après party. The terrace at Le Tremplin is one of two Basscamp après venues and we’ll kick things off at 4pm with headline acts. Make no mistake, Le Tremplin will be the loudest, most mental après party you’ve ever experienced. Every day.
This is where it goes off from midnight, but don’t get confused. This is not an opera. You won’t find Pavarotti on the ones and twos. L’Opera is Basscamp’s (AND Morzine’s…) largest venue. The sound system is immense and Basscamp’s best DJs will keep the club shaking until 5am.
One of the maddest party venues in Morzine, ‘the chaud’ is hot by name, hot by nature - we reckon the music will reach boiling point here every night. Renovated for this winter, Basscamp DJs will smash out d&b and dubstep from 10pm until the early hours.
Basscamp Festival Programme.indd 8
This venue goes mental. It’s one of those underground layers, perfect for house, breaks and electro. And that’s what we’ll treat you to each and every night from 10pm to 2am.
action sports cafe
On Wednesday from 4pm the Action Sports Cafe hosts the after party and prize giving of the Burton Slopestyle Session and the Pull In Pond Skim Competition will take place, all to the accompaniment of live Basscamp DJs on the sunny terrace
We’re going underground! The Cavern is busier than a London tube station, each and every night. This venue is known for taking disco and cheese and smashing them together and this week will be no different. Head to The Cavern if you want to hear the tunes that everyone secretly loves

All dressed up with somewhere to go!
Everyone loves a fancy dress party. So Basscamp is giving you five in a row. Now we’re not saying that it’s compulsory to dress up, but what we are saying is that you can win prizes if our official fancy dress spotters like your look.
monday: 90’s Rave - Whistle Possie Blow!
Put your palms and arms in the air and reach for the lasers… To celebrate the coming together of two Old Skool legends Slipmatt & 2BadMice for the first time in years were throwing a proper rave in our main venue, L’Opera. We hope you’ve come prepared with your high vis jackets & air horns. If not, get your hands on boiler suits, smiley faces, whistles, glowsticks and Vicks masks and get ready to throw some shapes.
tuesday: Up Pompeii - Romans and Gladiators Could there be an easier fancy dress theme? Bed sheets easily double as incredible togas, as you all surely know… So make yourself an ivy wreath from a local hedge (ooops, did we just say that?) - job done. Or go down the gladiator route (plastic swords only please)! REMEMBER! Togas don’t just have been white… the more colour the better. Think Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Gladiator and Spartacus and let’s all have a wicked time!
wednesday: Onesie Wednesday - The One and Only The onesie was the ultimate in snow sports fashion in the 1980’s. These amazing creations of style, colour and design are now seen on a regular basis in bars and parties in ski resorts across the land. Oh yes. The Onesie is back. Basscamp have enlisted the amazing skills of Retro Rentals. The boys and their crew have a sourced a huge collection of stylish garments for you to hire at a bargain price for the day and the night. Just head down to Basscamp HQ at Le Tremplin to hire your one piece wonder and get the party started.
thursday: Cowboys & Indians - Don't stop kickin' till the clock stops tickin' Yeeeeeehaaaaaa! Make sure you mosey on down to one of the Basscamp watering holes, saddled up in your finest Cowboys & Indians fancy dress. Ladies - think Annie Oakley, Pocahontas and sexy cow girls. Gents, take inspiration from the three amigos, Clint Eastwood, Mad Dog Tannan and the town sheriff. You get the idea. We want to see cowboys chasing Red Indians (or visa versa!) on the slopes during the day
friday: Back to the 80’s Street Party - Great Scott !
The last day of the first ever Basscamp Festival is going to be epic. We’re throwing the mother of all parties in the town square and we’ll be heading back in time to one of the best decades ever – The 1980’s Get ready for an avalanche of sound from our 40k sound system, which would blow the colours of a rubiks cube. Think of group themes like AC-DC, Abba, The Village People, The A Team or go solo as Teen Wolf, Knight Rider, Jimmy Savile or rock some mad fluro colours.

Describe your music style in 10 words... - House, Techno, Disco, Sleazy, Glam, Electronica, Wonky, Classic, Cosmic, Psychedelic Do you ski or snowboard? - I love snowboarding, it's what winters were made for. I also ski but have been attached to my board for the last 15 years, I like to get 3/4 weeks a year in every season. If so do you have a favourite ski resort? - I love the powder conditions & snow boarding in the USA and Canada. I've snowboarded a few times in Japan too which was a totally different kind of snow. But my favourite resorts are Colorado, Whistler and Jackson's Hole. Have you been to Morzine before? - Last spring - we did an outdoor party and it was so good and I could feel it was kick starting the Basscamp festival. Morzine’s a great scene, I live in Bordeaux so it's great to be in France.

Are you working on any new projects at the moment that we can tell the world about? - I'm working on a new electronic fully live show for Thomas Gandey for my 2012 tour and album. I haven’t toured live for a few years so I'm really looking forward to it. What are you expecting from the crowd in Morzine? - I know the crowd in Morzine play hard, it's an extreme boarding place with great parks and it attracts the hardcore party set. Great people, they like breaks and heavy tunes so I can really rock it. Caged baby? Why? - Cagedbaby was my band, I get asked this a lot and I can't actually remember when I first thought of it, but it's something about punk kids behind bars fighting to get out.

Here’s what he’s saying‌ What can we expect from your set list at Basscamp? I tend to side with golden era hip hop, funk, soul, maybe some breaks and a slice of jungle. Sounds awesome. Are we likely to see you on a pair of skis or snowboard while your in Morzine? I do have a thought to do a bit of skiing‌ we'll see what happens, no great loss for me if I don’t since the scenery alone is outstanding enough. We’ll drink to that. Have you got any new tunes to tease us with during the festival? I have some of my own compositions that I throw into my DJ set but since I only play vinyl I can't 'showcase' new tracks.

next year... We really want to know what you think of the Basscamp Festival. No really… It’s important to us so that we can improve things for next year. Please drop us a line when you get home with tales of your favorite nights, favorite gigs and favorite runs, plus anything constructive that we can put in the mix for next year. And don’t forget to follow Basscamp on Facebook and Twitter for all the postfestival news… 22
