Accommodation & Welfare While you study in Bournemouth, it is important that you are comfortable in your domestic environment and that you mix with as many native-speakers of English as possible and absorb the local culture in your everyday activities. BBSI therefore offers various accommodation options to suit your personal requirements, including host-family accommodation, hotel and guest house accommodation and residential facilities.

Accommodation A popular tourist resort, Bournemouth offers a wide choice of accommodation. BBSI selects only quality accommodation that complies with the English UK Homestay Charter and British Council Guidelines. Standard Host-Family One of the best ways to 'acquire' the English language outside the classroom and to experience the British culture is to live with a British host family. BBSI host-family accommodation includes a comfortable single study/bedroom, and is available on a part-board basis (breakfast and evening meal Monday-Friday, with full-board facilities (all meals) at weekends); on a bed and breakfast basis; or on a self-catering basis. Our host families are located close to the School and are inspected regularly to ensure that the highest standards of accommodation and care are continually met and maintained.

Residential BBSI can organise residential accommodation on a self-catering, room only, bed and breakfast or a dinner, bed and breakfast basis. Fees will vary according to location and room type.

A C C O M M O D AT I O N & W E L F A R E

Executive Host Family The executive host-family option provides accommodation in a highquality home in an exclusive residential area, with study/bedrooms of above-average size and with en-suite/private bathroom facilities. Moreover, many of our executive rooms have television and Internet connection included. Accommodation is available on a part-board basis (breakfast and evening meals Monday-Friday, with full-board facilities (all meals) at weekends), on a bed and breakfast basis or on a selfcatering basis. Our families are located close to the School and are inspected regularly to ensure that the highest standards of accommodation and care are continually met and maintained.

Guest Houses & Hotels BBSI can recommend several small, friendly guest houses and hotels close to our premises that would suit all budgets. You can choose a room with or without a private bathroom, and breakfast is included. Dinner can also be provided on request.

Welfare Facilities BBSI staff have developed a unique understanding of international students and we recognise that individuals have widely different welfare and cultural needs. Our policy is to provide and maintain a safe and healthy environment for study. Welfare staff are on hand throughout normal School opening hours and emergency staff are contactable at weekends and overnight. The British Council provides a personal safety guide for international students; this information is available at www.educationuk.org. If you have enrolled on a course at BBSI or are thinking of doing so, you will probably have many questions. The UKCOSA website, at www.ukcosa.org.uk, provides very helpful advice for students.

To assess academic progress accurately and fairly, BBSI employs a system of continuous assessment that has been developed as a rigorous alternative to a formal examination system, and is designed both to support study and to contribute to the motivation of students. Assignments are set regularly to assess the achievement of learning outcomes. These assignments may be in the form of written essays, reports, or case studies; progress tests; research and analysis projects; preparation and delivery of presentations; business simulations; or portfolio work.

To ensure grading is consistent and fair, careful guidelines are set and internal verification is standard procedure to meet rigorous quality-management requirements. All work is assessed on the basis of the quality of its presentation, content and language. The following are also taken into account: general ability and performance, assimilation, participation and motivation, punctuality and attendance, and overall academic progress. Grading criteria are shown in the table below.

University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations

ILEC (International Legal English Certificate) The ILEC is a University of Cambridge ESOL examination produced and assessed by Cambridge ESOL Examinations in collaboration with TransLegal, Europe’s leading firm of lawyer-linguists. BBSI is an accredited ILEC Examination Centre. English is an essential tool for any lawyer working with international matters, and employers need to know that the legal staff they appoint have a sufficient level of English to be able to communicate with clients and professionals in other countries. At the same time, law students and newlyqualified lawyers need to be able to show employers that they have the required language skills. The ILEC examination allows candidates to demonstrate their skills, and therefore to increase their employability. It is based on realistic texts, tasks and topics of the kind legal practitioners might meet in their daily working lives. Preparation for the ILEC is included automatically within these BBSI study programmes.

At the same time, law students and newly-qualified lawyers need to be able to show employers that they have the required language skills. The ILEC examination allows candidates to demonstrate their skills, and therefore to increase their employability. It is based on realistic texts, tasks and topics of the kind legal practitioners might meet in their daily working lives. Preparation for the ILEC is included automatically within these BBSI study programmes.

UK University Placements Undergraduate & Postgraduate Students BBSI was one of the first UK institutions to develop university foundation courses and offer university placement services in the UK. We have been providing these services since 1995. The School has since developed and refined the process and has become a sophisticated and student-orientated centre of expertise. The services are available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and our aim is to enable international students to enter the best and most ideally-suited university or college to match their personal abilities, achievements and aspirations. ♣

On commencement of their course at BBSI, each student is individually interviewed by our University Placement Counsellor so that we can make an early assessment of their academic background, current level of English and future academic requirements. Following that interview, our Counsellor will monitor the student’s progress, introduce them to appropriate universities, invite them to meet different university representatives, assist students with their university applications and guide them through the full university application process. The final choice of university, however, will depend on each individual’s final IELTS level achieved, as well as the grade attained on conclusion of their BBSI University Foundation or Pre-Masters study programme.

Professional Internships Professional work placements can play a valuable part in the learning process. BBSI was a pioneer in this field and has been providing internships since 1996. The School has developed an outstanding reputation for quality of service in this field and can now provide accredited work placements in partnership with the national awarding body NCFE. BBSI has developed a wide network of both local and national businesses who accept international trainees, and works to ensure that trainees benefit fully from this often challenging experience.

Business English Study & Work Placement BBSI arranges professional placements in industry, commerce, the professions and elsewhere. Such placements are suitable for trainees with an Upper-Intermediate to Advanced level in English, who have work experience in their own country. The aim is for trainees to broaden their experience in a vocational environment, as well as hone their communication skills, with a view to improving their knowledge and career prospects. Placements, which are full-time, are normally of between 8 and 12 weeks’ duration, and follow a minimum of 8 weeks of specialised English study at BBSI. For visa purposes, non-EU/EEA applicants must ensure their study element equates to no less than 50 per cent of their total programme. The choice of course to be studied prior to each placement is for each student to decide. However, BBSI would recommend the 12-week Communication & Business Skills study programme, or one of our other certificate, higher-certificate or diploma courses.

BBSI is a holder of the NCFE Investors In Quality (IIQ) Licence in recognition of the fact that BBSI's training programmes meet the rigorous standards set by the national education standards agency, the National Qualifications Agency (NQA). The BBSI CBS course, and all highercertificate and diploma study programmes are considered notionally at NQA Level 3 within the British Government's National Qualifications Framework.

UK PROFESSIONAL INTERNSHIPS

Following their study period, trainees are placed in work with a business that is complementary to their current or planned career. The work undertaken during the period of each placement is unpaid, and should be considered as part of an ongoing training programme. However, trainees must understand that they cannot specify a particular company or location. BBSI closely monitors progress during internships to ensure that the experience is a satisfactory one for all concerned. References are normally provided by employers on completion of the placement.

Work Placement Fields There are certain professions in which BBSI cannot provide internships. However, the following is a selection of fields in which BBSI has previously provided placements: * law firms * marketing * hotels & catering

* travel agencies * business support * electrics/electronics

* healthcare * local government * department stores

Training Outcomes On successful completion of a study and work-placement programme, trainees are issued with a BBSI Certificate, Higher-Certificate, or Diploma in their chosen subject, a BBSI Certificate of Work Placement, and an NCFE Certificate of Work Placement. Each trainee is also required to produce a Portfolio of Work to document their experiences. This documentation will serve individuals well in future employment applications. It needs to be recognised that to a large degree what happens during internships is outside the control of BBSI. The work can be challenging, and the responsibility for making the placement a success rests mainly with the student. Many of our students have had highly successful and enjoyable placements. Terms & Conditions Please note that the following terms and conditions apply for professional work placements: * A particular work placement is not guaranteed and is subject to trainees successfully passing a job interview. * Trainees must be as flexible as possible concerning the type of placement they are seeking. * Should a trainee be successful at interview, that trainee is obliged to accept that work placement. Should an individual refuse the work, however, BBSI is under no obligation to arrange a further interview. * Should a trainee be unsuccessful at a particular interview, BBSI may arrange further interviews, up to a maximum of 3 in total. * Should a trainee be unsuccessful in all 3 work interviews, there will be no refund of placement fees. * Trainees must understand that, if placed in work successfully, they are representing BBSI and should act accordingly, with both integrity and professionalism.

www.bbsi.co.uk Comprehensive details of all BBSI courses can be found on our website at www.bbsi.co.uk. Full details of each course can be downloaded in pdf format, which provide a week-by-week breakdown of course structure and content.

* Trainees must understand that, if asked to leave their work placement for reasons of misconduct, BBSI will not find alternative work, nor will there be any refund of placement fees.

ICAO Aviation English Training & Testing BBSI offers flexibly structured Aviation English training courses in the UK for pilots and ATCOs. Our courses are adapted to meet the guidelines in the ICAO English-language proficiency descriptors and can be structured to meet the precise requirements of individual sponsors. BBSI courses comprise 40 lessons weekly (30 hours) of direct-contact, tuition and skills practice. Typical course structure is as follows: 20 lessons weekly in General English 10 lessons weekly in Aviation English (Language Development) 10 lessons weekly in Aviation English (Functionality) Training Objectives

domains for which there are associated words. The 'one-size-fits-all' scenario is avoided and sponsors need to define very clearly the topics on which they require particular focus. Functionality. To assist in the process of rapid learning and functional development, language and skills development is reinforced by specialised skills practice. The aim is to provide trainees with the opportunity to function, regardless of individual skills levels, at the standard of ICAO Level 4. Emphasis is placed on speaking and listening skills, with continual practice in context, utilising audio facilities where appropriate, such as ATIS broadcasts, as well as audio examples of aircraft emergencies, incident reports relating to nonroutine radio phraseology and unusual aviation-related requests and incidents.

A V I AT I O N E N G L I S H T R A I N I N G

The aim at BBSI is to train to a standard whereby aviators acquire sufficient language proficiency to manage all their potential ongoing operational needs. Our courses cover not only routine phraseologies, but emphasise those types of communication not encompassed by phraseologies, such as non-routine situations and aircraft emergencies. Emphasis throughout is placed on developing the following: * general English-language communication skills * communication for general & specialised aviation functions * understanding of aviation vocabulary & terminology for different specialisations * oral proficiency skills for routine & unusual ATC situations & aircraft emergencies * awareness of aviation context & environment * progress towards/beyond ICAO Operational Level 4 descriptor standards

Course duration can be between 2 and 24 weeks, depending on the English-language entry level of participants and the precise requirements of respective aviation sponsors. Course Content & Structure General English. The general-English language elements of our training aim to enhance general confidence in all 4 language skills through extensive practice. Aviation English. Training in Aviation English targets aviation language and development of communication skills in context, depending on the precise specialisation of participants. Content is structured around published ICAO guidelines for English language proficiency. We incorporate the necessary elements of pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and interaction, in addition to standard, non-standard and unusual phraseology, terminology and vocabulary. Moreover, we focus particularly on numerous case studies, where the use of incorrect or non-routine language has either led to aviation disasters, or has exacerbated situations that might easily have been resolved safely through effective communication. Practice Activities. Practice activities include role-play and simulations; aircraft emergencies; bomb threat/alert/scare and contingency actions; contingency actions (general); special requests; case studies of actual incident/occurrence reports (all found to be attributed to poor English comprehension), combined with inappropriate non-standard radio phraseology; use of authentic and quasi-authentic audio, such as ATIS; and both standard and nonstandard operational situations. Specialised Content. Specialist aviation content includes a full inventory of events, domains and sub-domains that characterise the day-to-day communications of ATCOs and pilots. These events and domains represent air traffic control situations, routine or non-routine, in which all aviators must be competent, and each requires familiarity with many lexical

ICAO Aviation English Testing & Certification The ICAO Council, in light of the number of accidents and incidents in which a contributory factor has been insufficient language proficiency on the part of either pilots or ATCOs, recently introduced new measures to ensure that all ATCOs and flight crews involved in flight operations in airspace where the use of English language is mandatory are proficient in conducting and comprehending radiotelephony communications in English. Those ICAO language proficiency requirements have been incorporated in the Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA) requirements JARFCL 1 and JAR-FCL 2. In future, similar requirements will be incorporated in the European Aviation Safety Agency's (EASA) PartFCL: Implementing Rules. ICAO stipulates that Aviation English testing can be conducted only by external, independent and approved examiners. BBSI, in association with Global Aviation Language Ltd and LPLUS GmbH (Germany) commenced research and development activities for its ICAO English-language testing system in 2005. We included an analysis of best practice in language testing; examined aircraft accident and aviation incident reports where language proficiency was a contributing factor; and took account of ICAO language proficiency COURSE

NATO STANAG Military English Training & Testing

Designed to prepare potential NATO staff officers for their roles in the NATO Alliance and for UN Peacekeeping appointments, BBSI Military English courses are both stimulating and wide-ranging in their delivery and content. Language development through active participation in practical course work is encouraged, and is fully supported by authentic discussion, current affairs, written communication and military-planning activities. Duration of each course is normally 6 weeks; however, training can be tailored to meet the precise requirements of particular sponsors. The maximum class size is 12 Officers/SNCOs and our training is concerned with creating an understanding of the functional communication skills necessary in NATO UN Peacekeeping appointments worldwide. Our language training is therefore suitable for military officers, diplomatic staff, civil servants, intelligence officers et al.

BBSI courses include excursions to professional and cultural places of interest, and presentations on specialised military topics. Courses run year-round and a high proportion of students attain creditable passes at SLP 3 and SLP 4 levels, which allows them to subsequently establish themselves in international appointments with ease and confidence. Many former BBSI trainees are currently serving in senior NATO and UN appointments. Selected courses are conducted for VIPs and personnel of high military rank.

4. The University of Westminster has managed that service for nearly 10 years and has utilised its

experience with foreign-language testing to design and deliver a suite of monolingual English examinations. All examination papers are approved by a MODLEB ‘setting board’ within the MOD prior to delivery. This ensures that the language levels set correspond to the NATO language descriptors and that the content of each examination reflects the current operational duties of professional military personnel. These examinations are currently used as the profiling mechanism for all students attending English-language training as part of the UK Defence Diplomacy Policy scheme at MOD-approved training establishments, and have also been successfully calibrated against the Common European Framework of Reference.

NATO STANAG 6001 SLP 2

Assessment & Certification BBSI utilises only external MODLEB-accredited examiners administrated by the University of Westminster for STANAG-assessment purposes. Certification issued by MODLEB examiners is in accordance with NATO STANAG 6001 and is wholly acceptable as a formal measure of the operational and administrative military English-language skills level of the holder.

BBSI was a Core Partner in the recent Linguapeace Europe initiative sponsored by the European Commission. This project involved 13 member institutions from 11 separate EU/NATO member states. The aim of the project was to meet those objectives of European Security and Defence Policy that relate to conflict prevention and require high language proficiency among European peacekeepers. One distinguishing feature of Linguapeace Europe was that the project provided graded materials for military language training, which are being utilised in realistic scenarios worldwide by those experienced military and police personnel involved in peacekeeping operations. BBSI draws on these impressive materials for its training programmes.
