Independent Catholic Day and Boarding School for Boys aged 11 to 18
An All-Round Education in a Nurturing Environment
Open Morning Saturday 10 March 2018 9.30am - 12.00pm
Welcome to The Oratory School
We are delighted you have chosen to join us for our Open Morning. An Open Morning is a wonderful opportunity to explore our facilities in their beautiful surroundings and see a wide range of classes and activities in action. Our website and prospectus can tell you lots about the School but the best way to find out is to visit and experience our unique atmosphere first hand. Meeting our inspirational staff and happy, independent and confident boys you will discover what makes the Oratory so special and help you decide whether your son would flourish here.
On Arrival Parking: There is plenty of onsite parking which is signposted from the main front drive off the A4074. Once parked please make your way to the Front Hall where our Admissions Team, led by our Registrar Mrs Janet Martin, will be on hand to welcome you and help you sign in. We welcome the whole family to our Open Mornings. We hope you enjoy your visit.
Our School The Oratory is an Independent school for boys aged 11 to 18. We offer small class sizes and superb facilities and whilst the focus is on high academic achievement, Head Master, Joe Smith, has a clear vision to ensure that each boy flourishes and fulfils his maximum potential both in and far beyond the classroom, developing his individual talents to the full and to this end a wide variety of co-curricular activities help to enrich our boys’ learning. We are a Catholic school which welcomes boys of all faiths or none and visitors often comment on the inclusive community atmosphere of our school. The Oratory School has high academic standards, however we believe that an education is about more than statistics. Here at The Oratory strong pastoral care is at the heart of our all-round education. We believe our success comes from the supportive community atmosphere created by our inspirational staff, and importantly by the boys themselves. The Oratory is not a large school, and this enables each and every boy to be known, valued and stretched as an individual within our nurturing community. ‘Relationships between pupils and staff ‘really strong,’ say parents we can concur we would be happy to entrust our male offspring to their care on the grounds of inspiration, enthusiasm and humour.’ Good Schools Guide 2017
Open Morning After you have signed in at 9.30am there will be a Welcome
Talk and introduction to the school from the Head Master, Mr Joe Smith. This will be followed by an informal Tour of the School with one of our boys so you get to see the school through their eyes. We are extremely proud of our confident, independent and happy boys, so please do feel free to ask them anything, they will give you an honest opinion about what being a pupil at The Oratory is like! There is a lot to see when visiting on one of our Open Mornings. The whole school will be open and prospective pupils can see all our Academic Departments in action and also many of the wide variety of Co-curricular
Activities we offer, including sports, music, drama and CCF. There will be lots of opportunities to have a go at many of the activities and interact with our staff and boys and start to get a feel of life here at the school. You will also get the chance to look around one of our
Boarding Houses: If you are interested in joining the school in Year 7, you will visit our Junior House, St Philip House, which accommodates all our Year 7s and 8s. Houseparents, Charlie and Victoria Watson, will be delighted to meet you and answer any questions you may have. Those interested in Year 9 and beyond will visit Norris House, one of our 4 senior boarding houses, and meet Housemaster Mr Marcus Fec and Housemother Mrs Joy Blount who will be able to show you our boarding facilities and also our day boy house rooms. Open Morning will finish with an informal Buffet Lunch in the Front Hall and Adam Room and an opportunity to chat to the Head Master and other senior staff. www.oratory.co.uk

Don’t Miss Academic Departments All of our Academic Departments will be open today so please do have a good look round and speak to the staff and boys and feel free to join in the activities. You can make (and eat!) a crêpe in French, try your hand at some dissection or a bush tucker trial in Biology or perhaps you fancy controlling the lighting and sound in the Drama Studio. At The Oratory we offer a rich and varied curriculum. All academic subjects are taught in small classes by specialist teachers who have a real drive to instil a genuine love of learning into the boys. As a smaller school, the boys have the benefit of having great relationships with their teachers and tutors who support them throughout the entire year, and who provide guidance, encouragement and advice to ensure that each and every boy achieves his potential during the exam period.
Music Music is an integral part of life at the school with about half the boys taking the opportunity to have individual singing or instrumental lessons. It is our aim to develop musical interest in every boy, at whatever level. Our school choir toured Hong Kong this year and New York the year before. Look out for a variety of musical performances as you walk around the school, both our Big Band and School Choir will be performing during the morning.
Sports Centre Our Sports Centre has recently undergone a multi million pound redevelopment. There is something for everyone: swimming pool, sports hall, gym, ergo room, grass court tennis, golf course, squash courts and we are one of only five schools in the country to have a Real Tennis court. Nestled amongst pitches and fields galore that fall away into glorious woodland... any boy would find it hard not to throw himself into the plenitude of games on offer
Good Schools Guide 2017
Art & Design Department According to the Good Schools Guide ‘a creative oasis the words Art Department simply don’t do it justice’. Our award-winning department aims to bring out the creative side in all our boys and judging by the vast swathes of boys who achieve the very top exam results they do a fantastically inspiring job.
Hilaire Belloc Theatre With both curricular and extra-curricular Drama here at the Oratory, boys develop skills in acting, writing and directing, in order to develop their imagination, foster their creativity and promote their personal and social development. Take a look at what is going on today in our fabulously equipped Hilaire Belloc Theatre and Performing Arts Centre.
Combined Cadet Force (CCF) CCF helps to develop in our boys qualities of leadership and teamwork and along with our Adventure Training Programme and the Duke of Edinburgh scheme, it helps to promote the important qualities of responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance, perseverance and a sense of service to the community. See what our cadets are up to this morning.
Catering After your tour come and have a taste of the food here at the Oratory and have a look at some sample menus. Our Catering Team will be in the Adam Room next to the Front Hall.
St Joseph’s Chapel Have a look at our Old Chapel as you are passing. This 350 year old tithe barn has been completely renovated and is a lovely peaceful place where the boys can come and reflect.
Staff Here is a list of just a few of the many staff who will be on-hand to speak to you during the morning: Mr Matt Syddall — Deputy Head-Academic Mr Matthew Fogg — Deputy Head-Pastoral Mr Marcus Fec – Assistant Head-Co-curricular & Housemaster Mr Stephen Burrows — Head of 6th Form & Director of Music Mr Steve Tomlinson — Director of Sport
Next Steps An Open Morning is an ideal occasion for an initial visit and it is designed to give you a broad overview of the school. If you feel that our supportive community with high academic standards is an environment in which your son will flourish then the next step is to book an individual family Show Round. This will give you a more detailed and personalised experience and there will be a chance to meet the Head Master, Mr Joe Smith, to discuss your son’s application in greater detail. Our Registrar, Mrs Janet Martin, will be available in the Front Hall all morning to discuss any Admissions questions. She will have copies of our Registration Form or it can be downloaded from the Admissions section of our website.
Next Open Morning and Taster Days Our next open Morning is taking place on Saturday 6 October 2018. We run Taster Days in the Michaelmas term for boys that are hoping to join the school in September 2019 and 2020..
