Rupert grew up on the Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England, the eldest son of Chief Petty Officer Rupert King Coffen and Lavinia Coffen, where he developed an affection and award-winning talent for sailing that continued throughout his life. Following in his father’s footsteps Rupert served in the British Royal Navy during World War II attaining the rank of Petty Officer. After the war, Rupert designed a 16’ dinghy called the Albacore which is found at sailing clubs all over the world. He and his brother emigrated to Canada with their families and the brothers went to work on the Avro Arrow at A.V. Roe in Malton. After its demise Rupert continued working in a number of industries that eventually led him to a position with Monenco MidEast in Japan where he met his wife, Hisano. The couple then moved to Tennessee before returning to Canada where Rupert became an independent consultant until he retired at the age of 85. Rupert was a member of the Port Dover Yacht Club where he was able to indulge his passion for sailing. He was well-liked, wellrespected and well-loved; he will be missed by his family and many friends and acquaintances. A “Celebration of Life” will be held at the Port Dover Yacht Club on Sunday, May 1, 2011 from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
