Tears flow at emotional service

By Themba Mndebele

Mthobisi Mbatha (30) from Ext 2 was murdered on Saturday, 3 March. It is alleged by witnesses that he was attacked in Manzini Street by being stabbed with a bottle and assaulted with a brick. His attacker fled the scene but was later arrested. An ambulance was called and Mbatha was rushed to the nearest clinic where he later passed away. A memorial service was held on 7 March at his home in Ext 2 where community members and friends attended the service to celebrate his life and say goodbye. Neighbors appeared traumatised while family members emotionally devastated by grief. Those given a chance to speak about Mbatha said they were shocked at what happened because the victim loved people and was not a violent person. One of the neighbours said she witnessed the incident

from a distance, she saw him falling down on the street after being attacked. Mbatha’s friend, Mfundo Mlambo, said: “He was a friendly person with jokes, respectful to everyone, humble, open and peaceful. We never fought and we always associated ourselves with positivity.” Maqhawe Madela, speaking on behalf of the family said: “When we took him to the clinic we hoped he would recover. The issues we have in our community is that justice is not served. Criminals are arrested, then released and come back to the community with pride and continue committing crime. We pray that the law takes its course and that justice is served. The suspect must pay for what he did to Mthobisi.” Mbatha was laid to rest on 10 March at his hometown of Vryheid, in KZN. OFN extends its sincere condolences to the family. May his soul rest in peace and family and friends find comfort in the Lord.
