LEMONS IN THE MIRROR SPATIAL LABYRINTH

This collection of my paintings, hopefully, is a record of my life in the fall of 2015.

THE PUZZLE OF MINDS COLLAGE REINTEPRETATION

These are the three themes always with us. Home is a place people enjoy companionship and private space, and also good food is always waiting on the dining tables. Observation and mind always come hand in hand. That is how human beings percerive the world. Subject and object form a dualism that we always believe, even though sometimes we can’t help doubting.

These four paintings are created for the Lunar New Year. Jiaozi, which is called dumplings in western culture, is the traditional and nostalgic food for a northerner in China. For all Chinese, Lunar New Year is the most important day in a year when everybody goes back to their home to celebrate it with a big family.

For northerners, we make jiaozi together and eat them after dinner on Lunar New Year's Eve. We buy the flour, meat, vegetables, and seasonings to make the filling stuff and dough. We spend hours to go all the way to make jiaozi, because that is not just food, but reunion.

FROM DRAFT TO FINALL These are the sketches to show how the ideas are developed.

The first decision is to pick one scene or object that is a symbol of lunar new year.

Simple geometrical elements are the key to achieve the composition with dynamic and delightful vibe.

These four steps are presented chronologically to imply a timeline of making it

This painting depicts a lovely and sweet home in my mind. In the past few years, I have been living in three shared apartments altogther, with different roomates. After I moved to the third one, I decided to think of it as my "home", a place that carries my daily life and shares a deep connection with me. I sketched for the room plan, did decorations, made some simple furnitures and bought many plants. Then, idea of decorating future apartment of my own really fascinates me.

These are a few of my favorate things at home.

It is a place full of the things I love, such as food, friends, sunshine, plants, music, art, etc. I'm trying to gathering these scenes in their own spatial narratives respectively. You can see a kitchen, a dining table, a studio room, a study room and a bedroom. However, you cannot tell a certain accurate perspective or light of these spaces, just like you cannot tell if they are placed within one single container or put together with different angles and focus. I've learned a lovely home is always created out of the sweet expectations of life, which hopefully can be read by everyone from this painting. Draft 2015.12 12 ×16

LEMONS IN THE MIRROR SPATIAL LABYRINTH

The mirror is making everything confusing, the space refleted inside of it, and the cup......there is something wrong with the cup. On the left exists a weird dark chunk and is twisting the spatial order of all the other objects, or not? But, luckily, the light of the space is so warm and cozy. Guess it is somewhere real.

COLLAGE OF SCENES, FROM WHICH ARISE MINDS People live in their minds, which jump from one fragment of life to another and never cease. People identify themselves with all their minds and take them as the reality of their life. Are we limiting ourselves by only listening to those feelings? Are the awake days but a dream just like the dream at night? What is illusion and what is reality on earth?

IMPERMANENT MIND

REALITY

SYMBOLS OF INPERMANENCE AND ETERNITY But is there something that has been forgotten? Jumping out of these emotional patterns, there are also moments when you feel peaceful and care about the gain and loss no more. Sorrows seem just gone, with the rise of a deep peace and happiness from within. You feel connected to a higher wisdom, or even the universe. That is the moment you are so close to your reality.

Step out to watch the minds as a spectator
