Inside the Mind of Design with Randy Warner, V.P. Sales, Sub-Zero Group West Q. Tell us about your “Reclaim the Kitchen” initiative and why it’s important. A. Today we eat less than 50% of our meals at home. We spend hours watching cooking shows yet we spend less than 31 minutes a day preparing our own meals. We are suggesting that families start with one simple meal a week. The act of cooking is powerful and eating at home has proven to bring families closer together. We hope our campaign will inspire families to make the kitchen the heart of the home, and an area of the home where memories are made. Q. How does having the right appliances make life easier? A. We build products that simplify the process of cooking and food preservation. Of course, making a customer’s life easier does not end with the product. We match products to people’s lifestyles, whether they are looking for a professional or ultra-contemporary design. Our President and CEO, Jim Bakke, has made a significant investment in the after sale experience for a Sub-Zero and Wolf customer as well. We know having our product installed correctly is critical to a good customer experience. Q. What are some of the design trends in today’s luxury kitchen? A. There has been a shift from traditional to transitional and contemporary kitchens. We now build products that can fit any design style. We invented integrated refrigeration over 15 years ago, and now offer a whole line of integrated refrigeration, and integrated wine units. Our new M-Series wall ovens come in three styles that are timeless not trendy. The outdoor kitchen is also making a big comeback; you can extend your Sub-Zero and Wolf products from the inside to the outside with a full assortment of grills and outdoor refrigeration products. Q. Do you have any suggestions for people looking for inspiration for their “dream kitchen?” A. Yes! Our 9,000 sq. ft. showroom in Costa Mesa is not a sales outlet, and provides a very comfortable environment for browsing. Our showroom concierge’s are there to help guide you through all the possibilities, our corporate chef offers cooking demonstrations and use and care classes. Every product we make is on display, including multiple design applications. Our hope is no matter if you are consumer remodeling your kitchen, a designer looking for inspiration, or a builder/developer looking for the latest and greatest options, the Sub-Zero and Wolf showroom will help you “Reclaim The Kitchen.”

DESIGNER Q&A

Inside the Mind of Design with Richard Cohen, Richard Cohen Landscape Richard Cohen and his landscape and construction company have been installing and designing outdoor spaces since 1976, for both personal and commercial properties. They are known for their functional and aesthetically created pool and outdoor living spaces, such as kitchens and sports bars. Honored many times over by the California Landscape Contractors Association Beautification Awards program, Richard Cohen and his team are focused on making sure each homeowner creates their own special outdoor place. We asked Richard to share some insights about today’s outdoor living trends. Q. What are some of the leading design trends now? A. We complete lots of outdoor kitchens and living rooms, which become extensions to the home without having to addon to the building itself. The outdoor living rooms can have a fireplace, television, and sound system. Homeowners want an area where they can sit around the fireplace and watch television. Outdoor pavilions are usually built to include a kitchen and/or BBQ area. Kitchens may have a separate top burner, sink, trash enclosure, refrigeration compartments, dishwashers and even pizza ovens. Q. What are the keys to a successful outdoor living area? A. To make an outdoor space successful for the homeowner the size will have to work with how they plan to use it. Also having a solid roof cover will help make outdoor living areas useable in any weather. Another key element is making sure the outdoor living spaces are positioned so that there is an easy and unobstructed traffic flow from the house to the structure to the yard and back into the house. Traffic flow is key to the design. Q. What projects do you really enjoy? A. A total finish space — complete development of the property so that the homeowner can maximize the enjoyment and use of their space. I like to balance all the style elements of the hardscape, structure, pool, and to include enough green in the yard to create a warm feeling for the home. The main thing for me is to develop a homeowner’s yard and garden to be a place that they can enjoy and not have to do a lot of travel. Many clients want a place where their friends and families can gather, and to know that their kids and their kid’s friends are in a safe environment. Outdoor living helps bring families together.
