With over ten miles of beaches and the only recreational beach in the Netherlands facing the south, you will experience the amazing space and salty sea air on Voorne-Putten to the max. Feel the sand between your toes while walking on the beach, take a refreshing dive into the waves or hover above the water, hanging under your kite. Spread your towel to relax or visit the beach pavilion terrace for a delicious snack and a drink.

You’ll want to stay Rockanje beach, the country’s only south facing beach, is totally geared to bathing guests. Due to its unique position, the beach is a true paradise for sunbathers. Whether you just want to enjoy the sun or be active on the water, Badstrand Rockanje has everything you need. The beach slopes very gradually towards the sea and the sandbanks off the coast prevent waves from disrupting your swimming. The beach is therefore ideal for children who can safely play at the water’s edge. Do you want to spend a more active day? The beach provides opportunities for kitesurfing, paddle boarding, longboarding and many more beach sports. Rockanje beach is accessible via the first and the second entrance. To the north of the Badstrand, there is nudist beach.

Beaches Coastal extension The coastline of Voorne-Putten has grown since the expansion of the Maasvlakte. Maasvlakte 2 directly links up with the current Maasvlakte. The Slufterstrand has therefore largely disappeared. Due to the popularity of the Slufterstrand, it was decided to restore the lost beach during the construction of Maasvlakte 2. The coastal area past Maasvlakte 2 is not a beach with a boulevard and lots of cafes and restaurants. However, it is somewhere where people can enjoy sun, sea, beach, wind and tranquillity.

The Maasvlakte beach is mainly known for its ideal conditions for surfers and kiters. Kiters have their own extended section of beach at their disposal.

Infrastructure and sufficient parking ensure good accessibility by car and bicycle.

Kitesurfen Depending on the wind, the water off the beaches at Rockanje, Oostvoorne or Maasvlakte is perfect for kite surfing. You can also take lessons. The certified teachers will make sure you master kite surfing quickly and safely. Not sure you fancy the high speeds and big leaps of kite surfing? Passionately growing fruit.

Robin and Nienke Klok have been building this great business over the last 15 years. Fruit farming is still the business’ basis. Apples, pears, plums and cherries are grown sustainably here. And the focus is more and more on sustainable growing of pears and cherries.

Lately, cherry growing has evolved into very modern intensive cultivation. Shortly before harvesting, the entire orchard is covered for a few months by use of a film-roof. This will protect the cherries against weather influences, allowing them to optimally grow into a beautiful, big, sweet piece of fruit. During the months of July and August, these natural “delicacies on a stem” are available in abundance in the farm shop.

Farm shop Nearly all the fruit from the orchards is sold in the shop at the farm. This large farm shop offers a very broad assortment. In addition, a range of biological food can be found. But also fresh farmer’s cheese, dairy and fruit from the local farmers’ own orchards.

Many customers also make use of this lovely shop to choose from the extensive assortment of gift packages.

Oostvoorne, Rockanje and Tinte together form the greenest municipality of Voorne-Putten. Oostvoorne, with its Jacoba Burcht, is a perfect base for wonderful cycling and walking tours or a discovery tour by horse through the green forests.

Tinte is in one beautiful polder landscape. Every year there is a big Summer party with children’s activities, street theater and music. The village even has two museums.

A day trip in Westvoorne In Westvoorne you can enjoy gorgeous nature, the beautiful North Sea beach, and multiple excellent museums. Pay a visit to ‘De duinhuisjes’ and learn about life in dune farms between 1900-1930. Or visit the town Tinte and have a cup of coffee at the ‘Koffieleut’ museum, and admire their old coffee grinders, coffee pots and agricultural tools.

Then move on to De Stenen Baak, at the Brielse Meer. De Stenen Baak was the first lighthouse in the Netherlands that was made of stone; it was made to replace the previous lighthouses that were made of wood, which burned down. Inside, you can take a look at the informative presentation by ‘Historical museum Den Briel’, of which De Stenen Baak is a branch location, and if the weather is good you can climb up to the roof and enjoy the stunning view.

After a nice day trip, you can go back to Westvoorne for a nice meal at one of the excellent restaurants in Rockanje and Oostvoorne, and then take a beautiful walk through the dunes or on the beach, and enjoy the sunset at one of the beach pavilions.

LIBERTATIS PRIMITAE, THE FIRSTLING OF FREEDOM

The gates are opening In 2022, Brielle will be celebrating 450 years of freedom. On the 1st of April 1572 the Watergeuzen freed Brielle, as the first town in the Netherlands, from the Spaniards. This is where history was written, the history of freedom. This will be a grand event. Brielle welcomes you and they will open the gate!

In Brielle, the history of the 1st of April 1572 is told in primary schools every year and even more importantly, it is staged by the passionate residents in the fortress of Brielle. But what happened exactly? Who were the Watergeuzen (Sea Beggars)? And how was William of Orange involved?

This is the brief narrative of this remarkable Brielle story. The birth of the Netherlands, it all started in Brielle!

1 April 1572 In the sixteenth century, Brielle was situated in the Low Lands and ruled by the Spanish King Philips II, whose governor was the Duke of Alva. Due to its position on the estuary of the river Maas, Den Briel (= Brielle) was strategically important and the male residents earned their livelihood with crafts and a bit of trading and fishing. The biggest part of the town was walled.

The aristocracy and residents grumbled under the ruling of Philips II. He was too much of a Catholic and constantly asked for money. The introduction of a tax, the so-called “tenth token” was not well received.

Prince William of Orange rioted and formed an army of mercenaries. The so-called Watergeuzen (Sea Beggars) formed his ‘navy’ (sailing rebels).

On the 31st of March 1572 the weather was inclement. It was storming. The fleet of the Watergeuzen, 26 ships, headed by rebellion leader Lumey, was driven towards the Maas estuary by the storm and moored near Den Briel. The Den Briel ferryman Coppelstock rowed to one of the ships and went on board to have a conversation with Blois Van Treslong, who was a resident of Brielle and a Sea Beggar. The ferryman stated that there were few Spaniards in town and he was asked to summon the mayor to surrender the town to the Watergeuzen.

In name of Orange, open the gate!

Mayor Koekebakker and the town council initially refused, because the Watergeuzen were notorious for their pillaging and other crimes. Thereupon, the Watergeuzen ‘In the name of Orange’ stormed the North Gate and battered it with a ship’s mast. They quickly dealt with the Spaniards and took control of the town. This is how Den Briel became the first town to be in the hands of the rebels and to this day they are proud to use the slogan Libertatis Primitiae, Firstling of Freedom.

This made the seizure of Den Briel one of the most famous events of the Eighty-year War and national history of the Netherlands.

1568 – 1648 RISE AGAINST THE SPANIARDS 23 MAY 1568

Battle at Heiligerlee The first campaign of William of Orange. The battle was won, but the campaign wasn’t. There is no general popular revolt.

11 DECEMBER 1572

Siege of Harlem by the Spanish Troops.

The Harlem residents, including Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaar, heavily resist, but unfortunately the town falls into the hands of the Spaniards.

8 NOVEMBER 1576

Pacification of Ghent.

The 17 regions conclude an agreement to drive the Spanish troops out.

31 JANUARY 1587

Prince Maurits of Nassau, son of William of Orange, is appointed to commander of the States army across the entire territory of the Republic.

9 APRIL 1609 – 9 APRIL 1621

In 1609, the rebellious regions and Spain conclude an armistice agreement. And so, after years and years of negotiations, the first phase of the eighty-year war comes to an end. In 1621 the conflict continues, both on land and at sea.

30 JANUARY 1648

Peace of Münster, this ends the Rebellion of the Republic against Spain. The Republic of the united provinces (Seven United Netherlands) is acknowledged as an independent and sovereign state.

1 APRIL 1572

30 OCTOBER 1573 – 3 OCTOBER 1574

Siege of Leiden Fruitless siege of Leiden by the Spaniards. The population suffers, but perseveres and the Leiden Liberation is still being celebrated every year.

The murder of William of Orange The French Catholic Balthasar Gérard murders William of Orange at Prinsenhof in Delft. This is a great loss to the rebelling regions. This is because William was an inspiring leader and the pivotal point of the resistance against Spanish ruling.

Willems motto ‘Je Maintiendrai’ means ‘I shall maintain’. The motto can still be found on the uniforms of the land forces.

2 JULY 1600

The Battle of Nieuwpoort, the most famous battle in Dutch history.

Conquest of the Spanish treasure fleet by Piet Heyn. Via the roadstead of Hellevoetsluis, Piet Hein took the treasure fleet (acquired from the Spanish) to Amsterdam.

Ruin of Ravensteyn Shortly after the liberation of Brielle, the watergeuzen headed for Heenvliet and conquered Ravensteyn castle and set fire to it and the castle was not restored afterwards. The cellars were kept in use for more than a century afterwards though, as a prison. According to some people, the Heenvliet parson Merula was held here for some time, being accused of heresy. The ruin was thoroughly restored around 1960 and this former castle of the Nobleman of Heenvliet is one of the few structures from medieval times that is unchanged. THE BATTLE

Every year, on the 1st of April, the residents of Brielle bring history to life. On this day, the visitor could imagine finding himself in the year 1572, the residents wear medieval clothing, but also the streets have been transformed. Crackling fire in baskets, beggars, street musicians, monks and of course the Spaniards, as well as the world-famous Watergeuzen can be found in the streets.

Beer is being poured abundantly and you will be amazed at what you see.

But the biggest and most visited attraction of this day is the open air theatre play, during which the events are staged as they took place on the 1st of April 1572. You can move along all day and follow the story. There is a real replica of the rebellion ship and every now and then roaring cannon fire will startle you. Realistic and performed with a lot of passion by the members of the 1st of April association and street performers, who will make you actually feel the rivalry between the Spaniards and the Orangist Watergeuzen.

There is a feast in the liberated town, and food, barley juice and Spanish wine are served in taverns and inns. The public is immersed in the story, not just by the acting, but also by the narrator, before the scenes commence. Especially for this anniversary, the festivities and the ambiance of 1572 will be extended to the 2nd and 3rd of April.

Did you miss the 1st of April festivities? On the 10th and 11th of September, Medieval Times will return once more to the Brielle fortress, during the Dutch Fortress Town Days. This is a great historic event, organised together with other Dutch fortress towns, where knight battles, troubadours, wonderful old ships and historic events are mimicked.

Aside from the amazing North Sea beaches, Voorne-Putten has many other beautiful waterways where you can relax, swim, do sports and daydream!

Oostvoornse meer In a beautiful location, between the Brielse Meer and the North Sea, you will find the Oostvoornse Meer.

A recreational area close to the harbour of Rotterdam.

If you look out from the north side of the lake, you will be able to see the ‘Green Beach’, and from the other side you can see the cranes of the Maasvlakte.

Because of this, it’s a somewhat surreal place where people, plants and animals will feel at home. There are a lot of options for recreation here, with amazing beaches, various options for paddleboarding, surfing and being under water. There are a lot of facilities for underwater diving. There are a lot of shipwrecks to see, and sometimes even new ones are discovered.

A lot of props have been sunk especially for divers.

A few famous examples are the underwater (Volks­ wagen) Beetle and tunnel of 46 metres. Around the lake you will find a few nice catering places, with very good terraces. There are various locations to get your gear so you can get on or in the water.

Brielse meer The recreational area Brielse Meer of over 10 kilometres long is a green oasis between the island of Voorne on the south side and the harbour of Rotterdam on the north side. People who play water sports will be thrilled by the countless possibilities, like swimming, water cycling, water skiing, sport fishing or just paddling. There is a beautiful cycling path around the lake, which will take you past many beaches, harbours, playing areas and catering places. With the ferry Geuzenveer you can cross the Brielse Meer on foot or with your bicycle.

Haringvliet

The Bernisse is a stretched natural area on the west side of Spijkenisse. The river is 8 kilometres long and offers a lot of options for water recreation. Motorised vehicles are not allowed, so rowers, canoers and swimmers can do their thing in peace. You can go to Simonshaven to rent a luxury boat, fishing boat, kayak, water cycle and paddle board. You can enjoy being on the water, but you can also have a nice time on dry land, on the beaches of Abbenbroek and Simonshaven. Close to the Stompaardse Plas there is a new natural playground at the Stompaardsedijk in Simonshaven. The climbing props of natural playground Beverbos are made of natural materials, there are mud paths, a swinging course, strips of forest, scaffoldings and a raft for kids to sail on.

The Haringvliet is a former bay between VoornePutten, the Hoeksche Waard and Goeree-Overflakkee.

At the end of 2018 the sluice doors of the Haring­ vlietdam were gradually put ajar. This was done so that fishes, like the salmon and the sturgeon can migrate between sea and river again. Boardwalks, natural playgrounds, lookouts and a bird spotting dome ensure that everyone can enjoy the unique nature around the Haringvliet. This area is ideal for cycling, hiking, boatrenting, fishing or playing and splashing at the Quackstrand beach in Hellevoetsluis. www.happyboats.nl

Marina Hellevoetsluis has six fantastic harbours with a total of about two thousand berths. They provide a perfect base for watersports enthusiasts who love the wide open water of the Haringvliet and the sea. From Hellevoetsluis you can sail deeper into the Zeeland Delta and South Holland, either along the waterways or by sea. The marinas in Heliushaven are located close to a beautiful nature reserve and the historic fortress and have an open connection with the Haringvliet. Cast out a fishing rod Voorne-Putten is known as one of the areas with the highest fish concentration in the Netherlands and is a paradise for anglers. From wreck fishing, fly fishing to belly boat fishing, from fishing in the polder, on a lake, a ditch or canal, these are all options on VoornePutten.

Salt Voorne-Putten has a beautiful coastline where you can fish a plenty. When there is an onshore wind, the fish feed on sand eels and that can produce nice catches. And there are also beautiful fishing spots in the middle of the port area of Rotterdam Europoort. If you go fishing at the Oude Maas you can catch both salt and freshwater fish. The Haringvliet was already an attractive fishing area, but this has increased due to the opening of the Haringvliet locks. The Haringvliet will once again become the crucial gateway to the Rhine and Maas and migratory fish such as salmon and sturgeon can benefit from this.

JAN EN SIMONE RUITENGA OF THE

You may have noticed the ship in the harbour, or saw it sailing on the Ha­ ringvliet during a sailing trip, or perhaps you know the ship as a wedding location? Meanwhile, Jan and Simone Ruitenga have been sailing with passengers for more than thirty years.

They set sail on special occasions and day trips, but the ship also serves as a ferry across the Haringvliet and during these trips, they passionately explain about the ship and the surrounding area. High time for us to pay them a visit.

Arriving at the clipper barge, Buddy, the ship’s dog, greets us enthusiastically and we are given a warm welcome by Jan and Simone. We are amazed about the former cargo vessel, originating from 1914. Enjoying a nice cup of tea, the skippers tell us that they met on a Rhine cruise ship. He worked as a sailor and she was a cook.

‘As we had settled on the Linquenda l with our family, we were asked occasionally whether we would like to sail with a group. Sometimes they were families or groups of friends and every now and then there was a request from another party. From those little trips we initially made for fun, we switched to business trips.

We like to provide an experience during a sailing trip.

We are keen to put our energy into creating tailormade day trips. Once on the water, we are happy to also give additional information about the Haring­ vliet. We, for instance, explain about the isle of Bliek, or when coming across exceptional birds, like the bald eagle, of course this is wonderful to be able to share with your guests’, Jan states enthusiastically.

This is the reason that Jan and Simone are host and hostess of the Haringvliet for the Institute for nature education and sustainability (IVN) Voorne-Putten.

‘Every year, pupils in their last year of primary education, from primary school Brandaris in Hellevoetsluis, join us to get familiar with sailing, as well as with the Haringvliet, which we are quite excited about. We always hear that the children are very much looking forward to it, and during the day itself there are always boys and girls who are eager to take work off our hands. It sometimes happens that they get back on board years and years later and remind us that they thoroughly enjoyed that day. That makes us proud.’

Linquenda ll ‘As we started living on De Linquenda l, our oldest daughter was four years old and our son was just two years old. Afterwards another son and a daughter were born on board.’ After having lived on De Linquenda l for ten years, in 1994, Jan and Simone moved to the two mast Clipper barge De Linquenda ll. The ship is a Dutch inland navigation sailing ship and has a flat bottom, a gaff rig and two leeboards.

‘We opted for a different ship because with De Lin-

PINKSTERSAIL During Whitsun weekend, Jan and Simone organised Pinkster Sail for years, which is now being organised by their daughter. More than 60 gaff-rigged sailing ships will sail towards Hellevoetsluis and across the Haringvliet. On the Friday before Whitsun, the participating ships will moor at the harbour. The fleet consists of, for instance, fishing boats with sails, Clippers, Botters and Sea falcons. quenda l we found that boom moved to close over our heads and everybody had to remain in their seats while sailing. This was not a customer-friendly ship, whereas De Linquenda ll is. The boom will move far over your head, even while standing. The name Linquenda originates from the Latin saying Linquenda tellus, et domus , et placens uxor, “one day we will have to abandon this earth, home and dear spouses”.

The original name, as we bought this ship, was ‘Never a dull moment’, and although many times there are issues on a ship, we didn’t fancy the name.

Since our first ship was called De Linquenda, almost automatically this one was to become De Linquenda ll. De Linquenda is our home, our children were born here and so were two of our grandchildren.’

Enjoy and unwind ‘We are keen to show the way in which ships sailed in the past and how cargo was transported in those days. In addition, we like to give people a day trip during which they can enjoy themselves. The greatest moment of the day, in our opinion, is watching the sunset while on the water. There are times when we need to point this out to people, which is a pity in a way, but then again we are not all alike’, Simone says. ‘Providing a bit of perception of the water, while the pressure is relieved, and being able to unwind as a visitor on our ship, with nothing that requires planning, is what we aim for’, Jan continues. Simone complements; ‘With a lovely cup of coffee, a glass of wine or a bitterball, that is true pleasure.’

Back and forth During the summer months, De Linquenda ll transports hikers and bikers to and from Middelharnis, Stellendam and Tiengemeten. During these journeys the sails are down and the ships functions as a motorboat. You can enjoy the wind, the panoramic views across the Haringvliet and often also the sun. Willemien Hoogwerf Route

The Willemien Hoogwerfroute is an amazing, varie­ gated biking route through all the villages and towns in the Nissewaard municipality. You can start the route at the starting point, from pumping station De Leeuw Van Putten, in Spijkenisse, but you can obviously also start from any other village within the Nissewaard municipality.

If you start the biking route in Spijkenisse, at De Leeuw Van Putten pumping station, you will soon leave the built-up area and head for the Hartel canal, cycling alongside the Brielse Meer (Brielle lake) and underneath the Hartelkering towards the medieval villages of Geervliet and Heenvliet.

Geervliet The rich past of the village of Geervliet can still be noticed. In medieval times, Geervliet was a toll station for the busy trade route on the river Bernisse. The village was granted town privileges and Nobleman Van Putten established his homestead here. When you are on Landpoortstraat, briefly divert from the route and turn right into Landswerf and view the remarkable buildings, after which you can pick up the route again. Geervliet has an exceptionally beautiful (former) town hall, where nowadays marriages are registered. You can also find a beautiful church, which is a lot bigger that one would expect is such a small village. And without that rich past, the historic centre would never have had so many listed build40

ings. When you are at the mill, briefly peek into Spuikade, across the road you can see the oldest council estate of the isle of Putten, “Het Rooie Dorp (The Red Village)”. From Geervliet, you cycle across the Bernisse to get to Heenvliet.

Heenvliet Ravesteyn Castle is inextricably linked to the history of Heenvliet. This castle was built in the mid-thirteenth century by Hugo Van Voorne, the first Nobleman of Heenvliet. The castle, which had 4 corner towers and was surrounded by a moat, served as a residential home and a defensive structure. It was destroyed in 1572 by the Watergeuzen (Sea Beggars), but the ruins still remain.

The Heenvliet Market is one of the nicest market squares and has been largely preserved to its original state. With its white façade, the Ambachtsherenhuis (Craftsmen town house), a prominent and historic building, dominates the market square. At the corner of the square there is an establishment where one can rest for a while. From Heenvliet, you cycle to the south for a bit, to get to Abbenbroek.

Abbenbroek Abbenbroek has a Ring with mainly seventeenth-century houses, around a (former) harbour basin. This harbour was once connected with the Bernisse, which

was a busy river at the time. The 13th century Saint Aegidius church is probably the most striking building, partly due to the attractive chapel facades on one of the sides. Another extraordinary building can be found next to the church; the Craftsmen house, which was occupied even before 1630, by a Jacob Van Groeneweg, nobleman of Abbenbroek. Another landmark in the village is the attractive corn mill De Hoop (The Hope), built in 1843). From Abbenbroek, you cycle along the former river Bernisse towards Zuidland.

Zuidland Zuidland is a quiet village, with a nice historical centre, surrounded by vast polders and the beautiful nature reserve and recreational area Bernisse. The leaning tower of the late medieval village church can be noticed from miles away. Zuidland is situated amidst far-stretching polders, nature reserve Beninger Slikken and nature reserve and recreational area Bernisse, with many miles of cycle paths. After visiting Zuidland Village, we continue the biking route along the Bernisse in the direction of the Bernisse ­Spuidijk, to subsequently head back north, towards the village of Simonshaven.

Simonshaven There is little left of the Simonshaven harbour, designed by nobleman (Simon) Van Putten en Marckenburg in the thirteenth or fourteenth century. Only the Ring, the U-shaped dyke that surrounded the harbour, remains. The polder path, running inland, leads to the reformed church, the picturesque little white church of Simonshaven. This little church might be the most photogenic church within the Nissewaard municipality. As the area faced a lot of flooding in the past, the church was built on a mound.

From Simonshaven, you cycle towards the Spui, the water between the isles Voorne-Putten and Hoeksche Waard. Arriving at the Spui, you cycle along the outer dyke cycle path from where you can enjoy the amazing views on the Spui, in the direction of Hekelingen. This cycle path is also part of the biking route that runs around the entire island “The VoornePutten Tour”.

Spijkenisse Until halfway the last century, Spijkenisse was a village with a mere 3,500 inhabitants. More than 70 years later it has 20 times as many residents. Important architects have ensured the realisation of ambitious projects, such as Theatre De Stoep and the library, called Boekenberg Spijkenisse. It is for a reason that Spijkenisse has been known as the “Outdoor Museum of the era since the 1950’s”. One can find all the architectural styles inside the town. Hekelingen The friendly village of Hekelingen was considered a district of Spijkenisse for a long time. The village’s landmark is the little church, originating from 1851.

The history of Hekelingen itself dates back even further, at least until the thirteenth century.

Lightschip 12 Noord Hinder

The lightship 12 Noord Hinder was built in 1963 and served as a ‘landmark’ at various points in the North Sea until 1994. By then, the lightship had become surplus to requirements due to the modern navigation technology on board seagoing vessels. The Noord Hinder was the last lightship to serve at sea and was eventually replaced by a light buoy. A visit to this unique museum ship in Hellevoetsluis is very special and instructive. The Jan Blanken Dry Dock is the oldest surviving dry dock in the Netherlands and unique of its kind in terms of structure. A special feature is the ‘ship door’ that seals off the dock. The visitor centre has interactive displays which allow you to explore its history for yourself and to see, hear and read all about the dry dock and its architect. The tours are highly recommended – part of them involve walking through the historic tunnels, which could be flooded in order to quickly put out any fires in the dock.

De Hoop Corn Mill In 1697 there was a wooden post mill on the place where the dry dock is now. This mill had to make way for the dry dock at the end of the 18th century.

The stone tower mill “De Hoop” was built in 1801.

The flour carts could drive under the sack hoist for loading and unloading. During the restoration in 1961-1962 this passageway was restored. De Burcht van Voorne The burcht van Oostvoorne was founded between 1150 and 1250 by the nobels of Voorne. The fortress was built on a “motte”, a natural elevation in the landscape which was artificially raised. By building on top of a dune, people could defend themselves more easily from attackers and they also had an excellent view the Meuse delta and the surrounding land.

Hellevoetsluis Lighthouse The lighthouse, dating from 1822, is still used for shipping. The lighthouse provides a magnificent view over the Haringvliet and the harbour of Hellevoetsluis. This Hellevoet lighthouse is open to the public every last Sunday during the months of May through August from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The open-air museum “De Duinhuisjes” contains four original dune farms dating from 1850 to 1910. The dwellings are decorated in the style that was customary around the years 1900-1930. Dames Mak Greengrocer’s

Hidden in the dunes of Oostvoorne there is a remnant from World War ll. The people of the area call it the Biberbunker, a huge concrete clossus built with three metres thick walls. The bunker and Stelling, which can be found, tell a unique piece of history. The Funktstelle Vermittlung is also opend for visitors, and you can look at the Flak 37, an infamous anti-aircraft weapon. With these assets, the association shows even more of the unique history of what happened in the Oostvoorne Dune.

Everybody in Spijkenisse knew the old greengrocer’s run by the Mak sisters. Spinsters Annetje and Klaasje Mak ran the shop until 1986. The nostalgic little shop and house were left behind and were completely restored in 2010 to their condition of 1918. The façade now even features the original round window.

Lifeguard WILLEM VERHOEF

Rescue team Rockanje is the association that prevents and combats (drowning) accidents on and around the North Sea beaches of Voorne. With a team of over sixty well-trained Lifeguards, they are ready 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, regardless the weather, to take action on land as well as at sea. We have a conversation with volunteer Willem Verhoef.

We meet Willem from Oostvoorne, he is a master student Complex Systems Engineering and Management at the Technical University of Delft, at the rescue post on the beach off the 1st turn of Rockanje. Willem starts telling passionately about the rescue team.

‘Our duties are partly supervision and partly relief efforts. We maintain supervision during the peak season, at the busy beach of Rockanje and in addition we provide relief efforts for the entire North Sea coast of Voorne. And we do this all year round. We respond after a report to our rescue post, via the coast guard or receive a 112 call.

I ended up with the rescue team via friends. The club consists of a convivial group of volunteers. Eventually, all the things you experience together ensure you to become real friends. A lot of time is spent together during the shifts. On an average day as a Lifeguard you will be busy all the time. We actively supervise and want to prevent people from getting into trouble.

That is our main duty and additionally, we assist people when they get into trouble. But our main task is to try and prevent that from happening. This means, for instance, that on a day when the wind is coming from inland, we patrol the beach by car or on foot and the sea by boat, to address people on air beds and point out the dangers of the use of an air bed.’

FIRST AID ‘In addition to supervising, we also provide first aid in case of (minor) accidents and we assist in looking for children missing or help children who cannot find their parents. I would, as such, recommend parents to have their children wear an 06-wrist band. These are always available at our rescue post and can be picked up for free. We have plenty of them!’

Flags ‘Beach guests can always ask for today’s conditions.

The accurate conditions are always indicated by use

of flags at our rescue post. No flag means no particularities for the specific day, only our rescue flag will be showing. When a yellow flag is showing, this means swimming is dangerous and when there is a red flag, it is very dangerous to go swimming and it is even prohibited. Many people fail to observe the flags, while it should be the first thing to inspect when you arrive at the beach. In addition, people can always first check our website, which displays webcam images and current weather information. This way people can prepare for their visit to the beach. Imagine, you arrive from Rotterdam, well, the weather could

1. The sea is not a swimming pool. Using air beds in case of wind from inland should be avoided!

2. Read the signs and regulations and know about their meaning.

3. Look at the flags, to determine the conditions you are finding yourself in.

4. Be aware of the position of the rescue post and whether it is open at the particular moment.

5. Enjoy the water, but do it responsibly.

A conversation with be quite different here from that in the city centre.

Rockanje is not too bad in terms of hazards, it is a fairly quiet beach with shallow waters, but the current could be severe here, from time to time. And sometimes this comes unexpected.’

Fitness training ‘Throughout the winter we swim at the Meander in Oostvoorne, to keep fit and to train. If the weather allows it, we will train outdoors. All of us, from the Rescue Team Netherlands, follow the Lifeguard training, set up by them, which is an internationally acknowledged Lifeguard diploma. And before that, we all obtain our First Aid diploma. After having been a Lifeguard for one or two years, one can gain experience on the boat and as a skipper. It is quite an effort to obtain all the qualifications, but it is a fun group of people to work with and a rather close-knit group. We just have a great time together! And we are

at a beautiful spot here, at a lovely beach and we have a great rescue boat with proper equipment. A car, a boat and a water scooter for use, which is excellent of course. It is all for a serious purpose, but at the same time it is sort of a unique hobby. We nearly always manage to make a difference.’

Alarm team In the event of rescue situations, the volunteers of the rescue team are often confronted with serious events.

We ask how Willem and his colleagues cope with these situations.

‘After an incident, we always do a debriefing. Then we discuss the incident with everyone involved. And depending on the seriousness and those who were involved, experienced or less experienced Lifeguards, we are being watched closely by the post commander.

He will monitor whether everyone is doing OK. And there is always professional assistance available for us.

Most rescues are performed by the alarm team, which is the group of most experienced Lifeguards, who are also available outside opening hours of the rescue post, to provide assistance in case of 112 reports.’

Willem is also committed to this alarm team.

‘In case of extreme weather, when we think; going onto the water now would be quite challenging, we find that rather unexperienced water sporters will still venture on the water. And sometimes I think; you’d better not. Sometimes they are not even aware of the conditions or they may simply never have got into trouble. But it is nothing like a game. In 2021, the alarm team provided life-saving assistance more than 55 times. These were mainly water sporters who would otherwise not have managed to leave the water by themselves, or it would have taken so long that they would have suffered from hypothermia or needed medical assistance. This usually happens during a certain period, when it is really busy. In the event of strong winds, of course. In the autumn, when the beach is empty, that is the busier time for us. The alarm team works in Rockanje, but also on the Oostvoorne beach and at the tidal creek on the Maasvlakte, basically from the dam to the tidal creek beach and additionally, of course we provide assistance where necessary outside the area.

We have colleagues at the Quack beach in Hellevoetsluis, which is a different association, but they also have active lifeguards. If necessary, we assist each other, as long as we’re able to guard our own area, because that is what comes first. And on the Maasvlakte, near the Sand Watch, there is also a rescue team that is manned during the peak season.’

Rescue team or KNRM The KNRM (Dutch Royal Rescue Association) has been working from the water for nearly two centuries,

while the Rescue Team works from the beach area up to one kilometre at sea. The Rescue Team often assists recreational users, while the KNRM assists commercial vessels and pleasure boats at sea. www.reddingsbrigaderockanje.nl

TIP FROM WILLEM: Lookout

I always like the spot at the corner near the bunkers on the beach, between Oostvoorne and Rockanje. It can be very quiet and remote there. It is a bit of a walk, but it is worthwhile to be there during the sunset.

If you’re lucky, you can see seals emerging and swimming close to the beach. That is unique in these parts. But don’t go swimming, because the current is often dangerous!

During the beach season, in case of good weather, the ­rescue team post is open at weekends during the months of May, June and September between 9.30 am and 5.30 pm.

The beautiful location of the vast Haringvliet has played an important role in the course of history for Hellevoetsluis. Not for nothing that it is the “Fortress City on the Haringvliet”. The Fortress, with its ports and defenses, is home to a rich wealth of history. The water and Hellevoetsluis are traditionally connected.

Thanks to its favourable and strategic location on the Haringvliet, Hellevoetsluis became a home base for the Dutch war fleet in the early 17th century. A port that later became more and more reinforced, creating the unique combination of a fortressed city and a war port. Admirals such as de Ruyter, Tromp and Piet Hein have had their home port here.

Westvoornes Weidevlees (Westvoorne Meadow Meat) is the brand name of the delicious meat from the cows of Assenberg Farm in Oostvoorne. Assenberg Farm is a livestock farm with cows of the Belgian white-blue race. In the spring, the mother cows will go to the meadow with their calves, young bulls and breeding bulls. The calves drink milk from their mother until the end of the meadow season. The animals are fed with products from the farm, such as hay, silage grass, corn and potatoes, in combination with especially mixed powerfood. Westvoornes Weidevlees is responsible meat of premium quality.

The meat is sold directly to customers in a small packaging, fresh or from the freezer. In the store on Saturdays, or online.

Wine Estate De Vier Ambachten in Simonshaven is not just a vineyard, it’s also a tasting ground for wine production! On the terrain, there are over 350 high stem apple trees, more than 100 races, especially for the production of apple wine and cider. In a good year, about 12,000 bottles of wine and 10,000 bottles of cider are produced here. At the vineyard you can buy home produced wine and cider, and various types of jam. They also sell various kinds of grape plants and fig trees.

The IJsboerin (ice-cream peasant), Rockanje The IJsboerin forms a pleasant stop during a hiking or biking trip. On the warmly decorated terrace, under the chestnut tree, overlooking the farmlands, you can choose from more than 16 different ice-cream flavours, crunchy, freshly-made with various toppings, real whipped cream and a tasty cup of coffee or tea. We also considered the little ones, as the terrace includes great playground equipment to climb on.

Leijnes Plukland (pick-your-own area), Hellevoetsluis Leijnes Plukland is a beautiful spot in the middle of the Hellevoetsluis polder, where you can wander through the poppy fields or pick-your-own flowers in the garden. And while the children are enjoying themselves, you are can have a coffee with cake. The poppies flourish in the spring and the area is then buzzing with bees and bumblebees. The wildflowers flourish from July until October. You can pick any of these flowers to create a bouquet. You will be given a basket and scissors and then you can have a great time.

Dairy farm Eikelenboom, Abbenbroek At the yard in Abbenbroek you can find the Netherlands’ first cheese-room. An all-in cheese dairy and storage in one. Dairy farm Eikelenboom considers it important for people to be aware where their food is coming from, which they will be happy to explain about. All products are made by the famer’s wife herself, from the milk of their own cows, and subsequently offered in the shop. The shop’s opening hours are Friday afternoon from 1.00 pm until 5.00 pm and on Saturdays from 10.00 am until 5.00 pm.

Mill ‘t Vliegend Hert Brielle The mill operates and is open to visitors every Friday (and Saturday, subject to confirmation) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The windmill offers wonderful views of the surrounding city walls and the city. By foot With the extensive walking junction network at Voorne-Putten you can plan your route and determine the distances yourself. The routes are not only about paved paths, but also half and unpaved paths and that makes it so much fun! Stroll through the woods, on sandy roads, dikes or explore the tall grass. While walking, you can enjoy the characteristic polder landscapes, sheep on the dike and the view over the lakes and beaches. Wear sturdy shoes, binoculars and a backpack and go by foot. We have made a selection from the large selection of hiking trails.

Walk through history Brielle has a rich history and breathes memories of a distant past. You will find examples of this rich past at many places in the city centre. Beautiful facing bricks, plaques, and most especially the many listed buildings, have their own story. The Brielle guide group can tell you all about this but of course you can also go on your own. There are several city walks available at the Historisch Museum Den Briel.

Naval heroes route In historic Hellevoetsluis you can follow in the footsteps of our naval hero Admiral Michiel de Ruyter by setting off with this naval hero. The historic city guide will take you on a voyage of discovery around the fortified harbour of Hellevoetsluis in search of the maritime past. Starting in 1602, the beginning of the Dutch East India Company period, the port of Hellevoetsluis was the most important Dutch naval port for hundreds of years. By horse The wind through your hair, the salty air in your nose, on a cheerful, neighing horse, what else do you want?

Horse riding enthusiasts can indulge themselves at Voorne-Putten. There are beautiful equestrian routes all over the island that lead through forests, polders, dunes and, of course, over the beach. The bridle paths have recently been refurbished in Westvoorne. This way you can make a route around the Oostvoorne lake of 11 kilometres. This beautiful route runs on paths, beach and horse tracks. The beaches are open to riders throughout the year. Only the bathing beach of Rockanje from 1 April to 1 October between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. is prohibited for horses. But you can also find beautiful equestrian routes along Lake Briel, the Bernisse recreation area and De Uitwaayer Spijkenisse nature and recreation areas.

By bike If you take a bike ride on Voorne-Putten, you will be surprised by a varied landscape. You cycle through the polders where the cows follow you and the next bend suddenly brings you to a beautiful dune area where the silence of nature surrounds you. Nice bike paths along waterways, windmills, picturesque villages and the fortressed towns of Brielle or Hellevoetsluis, all within easy distance. You can also extend your biking route to the Maasvlakte or the Headland, where you can admire the huge sea container ships on the way to the port of Rotterdam! And does the other side beckon as well? Then take one of the ferries that cross the waterways around the island. You can 66

Mountain bikes For those who like to a bit of a workout, there are two special mountain bike routes on Voorne-Putten.

One of these is a twelve kilometre route around Oostvoornse Lake, with a varied track through lovely dunes and woods with short climbs and specially extended single tracks. Mountain bikes can be rented from ’t Wapen van Marion, where there is a bicycle wash specially for the mountain bikers. In Uitwaayer recreation area at Spijkenisse, there is a thirteen kilometre route. This route is slightly flatter with specially built hills. Whisper boating on the water The whisper boat “De Bernisse” departs from parking lot “Krekenhoek” in Zuidland for cruises through unspoilt nature and across the water to Bernisse. The whisper boat is electrically powered and, due to its low draft, can sail through narrow creeks and canals where larger tour boats cannot enter. The whisper boat is in operation throughout the year and is equipped with a heater. On board the IJsvogel electric boat, you can sail from the historic De Leeuw van Putten pumping station in Spijkenisse to the wonderful polders that surround the town. Adventure in nature!

You will find plenty of adventurous nature playgrounds on both Voorne-Putten and the island of Tiengemeten. You can build huts and rafts, build 68

dams in a stream, stalk frogs, wander the maze or crawl through tunnels. And it’s not just for sunny days, because when it rains or the ground is wet, you can play in the mud between two of the three play mounds. There are also plenty of benches where parents or carers can sit and enjoy the fun. The elements of nature are your toys. In the Vrijheidsbos beside Brielle lake, you’ll see panels alongside the path with poems by famous poets, as well as some by children from primary schools in Brielle. Starting from the Tenellaplas visitor centre, various challenging activity routes have been marked out for children. You set off with a bag full of useful aids – view water creatures with a magnifying glass or follow your compass towards the ‘Beestenboel’ adventure trail. Along the way, you’ll collect all kinds of images of animals that live in the dunes. And for the little ones, there is the gnome path.

The Beverbos is a natural playground where children can discover nature with natural materials. There are balancing logs and a labyrinth. Try crawling through a culvert to reach the water pump and pump the water to the surface. Or walk through the play island via the wobbly bridge or the stepping stones and have fun on the swinging track or stilt track. Do you feel like playing in the water or cooling down? Then pull yourself

over the Bernisse on a raft and splash in the water.

You can enjoy great shopping in the centre of Spij­ kenisse. This pleasant shopping centre offers a very diverse range, from local retailers to large national chains. In the centre are all kinds of restaurants, bars, tea rooms and coffee shops where you can relax; from atmospheric and pleasant to hip and modern.

Every first and last Sunday of the month, the shops are open in Winkelhart Spijkenisse. On Tuesdays and Saturdays there is a market on the Markt, the square between Boekenberg and the Dorpskerk. On Woonboulevard Spijkenisse, you can shop for your home.

Shopping in the historic fortified town of Brielle is an experience in itself. Here you will find a wide range of shops, both big and small, most of which are housed in historic buildings. You are welcomed by more than 100 hospitable entrepreneurs in their specialist, fun and special shops. On Monday, there is a market on Turfkade in Brielle.

The shopping centre of Hellevoetsluis offers varied shopping with over 130 shops. Winkelcentrum de Struytse Hoeck is open seven days a week, with late night shopping on Friday evening and the shops are open every Sunday! The residents of Voorne-Putte fancying a party is showing from the many festivals that are held on the island. Every year, numerous volunteers assist the organisers in making the various festivals into a success. We are meeting Petra Ronde, co-organiser of Vestingpop in Hellevoetsluis.

More than seven years ago, Petra started organising Acoustic Stage, the non-profit organisation that every musician can register with for a gig on one of their stages.

Acoustic Stage started in establishment Barbiertje on the Kerkstraat in Hellevoetsluis.

‘There are so many talented young people, but there were too few venues for them to build on familiarity.

In the Barbiertje, I was given the opportunity to set up Acoustic Stage’, Petra explains.

‘On these nights, we offered young, starting musicians a stage to present themselves, but also to get to know each other and build a network, and of course we also offered visitors the right ambiance during such events.

We started by doing this once per month and later on, we expanded the concept to ’t Kont van het Paard (the Horse’s Ass) pub in Brielle and, as such, we found local talent on stage twice per month. It basically got out of hand, because meanwhile numerous musicians have played at Acoustic Stage, who eventually built a fantastic music career. Artists like Will Knox, Judy Blank, Ivo Gleeman, Flemming, Duncan Laurence, Kira Dekker, Gerson and Daniel Cane have all performed here. This made the podium renowned in no time.

Nowadays, musicians usually register and send an audio tape that I can listen to. This is convenient for me, because although everyone is welcome here, it is nice to ensure a matching programme on a night where we have four different acts. So we won’t have a metal band playing just before a singer-songwriter with very sensitive songs.’ ’

Vestingpop ‘In the past, we had a different festival here, in Hellevoetsluis, called ‘Wallenpop’. For two consecutive years I was to take care of the programming of the second stage, the Acoustic Stage podium. That was great fun. But unfortunately, the organisation of Wallenpop quit, as a result of which there was no musi-

There was demand for the organisation of a new festival and we have been able to develop that, together with the crew of Voorne-Putten Events. We organise the festival with a small team; Johan Tjallinks and my daughter, Dominique Sonneveld and myself. Together, we divided the tasks, such as promotion, construction and programming. And additionally, we have a number of dedicated volunteers who assist us in many areas.

Watergeuzen and martyrs

The city on Lake Briel exudes memories of a distant past. The city has received kings and queens in its rich history and counted sea admirals, writers, poets and martyrs among its residents. The old fortressed city and most famous pilgrimage site of South Holland tells, through the more than 300 monuments, the story of the Libertatis Primitiae, “first fruits of freedom”.

On April 1, 1572, the city was taken by the Watergeuzen and took its important place in every history book regarding the Eighty Years’ War. The ramparts with its bastions and ravelins still offer protection against the outside world and a safe haven for the many churches and treasures of Brielle.

A day trip in Brielle Brielle is a beautiful fortress town with over 400 monuments and a rich history, so there’s always something to see. The area surrounding Brielle also has a lot to offer. Brielle is located by the Brielse Meer, which offers a lot of options for recreation on and by the water. But you should also consider cycling east along the water. Enjoy the view of all the water sports enthusiasts on the water, and stop at the Vrijheidsbos, where trees have been planted to commemorate special events. Read the poems with each tree and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Nearby, in Vierpolders, you can take a walk on the ‘Blotenvoetenpad’ in the fruit tree orchard of the Klok family. Dune AND FOREST

Step out of the shade of the dense forest and into the dry dune sand of Voornes Duin. A unique dune area where, thanks to the presence of forests, moist dune valleys, dams, ponds and large dune lakes, you can stand eye to eye with wild horses or Galloway cattle and enjoy a huge variety of plants and birds.

The Voorne dunes extend from Oostvoorne to the Haringvliet and are home to a great variety of plants and animals, due to the presence of woodland, damp dune valleys, dry sandy slopes, thickets, pools and large dune lakes. From the shadow of dense woodland you suddenly step onto the dry dune sand.

Thanks to this variety, the Voorne dunes boast many species of plants and birds. And despite being located close to the port of Rotterdam, this is a place of peace and quiet. The large dune lakes Quackjeswater and Breede Water are rich in waterfowl. Here, cormorant and spoonbill colonies have established themselves.

In autumn, shrubs covered in berries provide a feast for migrating starlings, red wings and fieldfares. The Voorne dunes are rich in many varieties of plants and are known for their diversity of orchids. And the plants, in turn, attract butterflies In the northern part of the dunes, you may encounter large grazing animals, Icelandic horses and Galloway cattle. These help Zuid-Hollands Landschap, the organisation responsible, to keep the dune area open.

At the edge of the Dunes of Voorne lies the Tenellaplas visitor centre of the Zuid-Holland Landscape Conservation Society (Zuid-Hollands Landschap). In this nature information centre you can get your questions answered regarding the flora and fauna of the dune area. Walking route descriptions and maps are available and the reception staff are happy to assist you with advice on the nicest, longest or most beautiful route of the moment.

Slikken van Voorne The Slikken van Voorne area is located west of Oostvoorne. It has an eventful history. Situated in the mouth of the river Maas, where the tides had free play, channels, sandbars and dunes once formed there. In the last century, large-scale projects were carried out off the coast of Voorne; the Maas was dammed and the Maasvlakte created by land reclamation. The dunes were raised and anchored. As a result, the natural dynamics largely disappeared from this area. But nature had a surprise in store. On the south side of the Maasvlakte, a new dynamic coastal landscape emerged, where new channels and sandbars were created by tidal action. This process is still going on.Thanks to the natural development of this area, many species of plants have established themselves here. The mud flats are home to many small creatures which provide an important source of food for the Eurasian oystercatcher, sandpiper, curlew and redshank.

Groene strand On the banks of Oostvoorne lake, a lagoon has been excavated and a number of bird islands created where you can enjoy the sight of geese, ducks, plover and breeding pairs of common tern. In the shallow waters of the lagoon, egrets and spoonbills hunt for food. A walking route has been created through the area, with various bird-watching screens.

The estate itself has disappeared. An old beech forest marks the transition from the estate to the inner dune woodland.

A high dune offers views of the Groene Strand beach and Oostvoorne lake. The Wielewaalroute is a marked walking route two kilometres long and you can park on Hoflaan in Oostvoorne.

Bernisse The Bernisse recreation area consists of a centuries-old polder landscape that lies between the Spui and the Voedingskanaal. The Bernisse area is seven kilometres long and runs from Heenvliet through the polders to Zuidland. It consists of ponds, basins and lakes.

Together with the woods, marshes and meadows, the area is 300 hectares in size. It has since grown to become one of the richest recreation areas in the region in terms of flora and fauna. Bernisse is perfect for exploring on foot. It is largely accessible – only in the breeding period is walking not permitted everywhere. In summer, Bernisse is heavily used by the residents of Nissewaard. You can swim, canoe and surf there, or just enjoy walking or running, and there are various fishing spots for anglers. You can sail on the river Bernisse in an electric boat.

Spuimonding west (Beningerslikken) Where the Spui flows into the Haringvliet is the Spuimonding south of Zuidland. Here you can enjoy nature to the full in the Spuimonding West nature reserve. There is a footpath that takes you through

the entire reserve via a bridge and a rope ferry. Bring provisions with you and take a seat on one of the benches provided. Climb the viewing tower on the eastern edge of the reserve. From the top, you have wonderful views over the Spui and the Haringvliet and much of Voorne-Putten and Hoeksche Waard.

The landscape in Spuimonding West is varied. There is undergrowth, salt marshes and mudflats, all rich in food. This landscape is ideal as a spawning and breeding ground for fish and birds. Among the birds you can see there are some which enjoy special protection, such as the spoonbill, the little egret and the gadwall. The area is large enough to tempt reed birds like the bearded reedling, the blackcrowned night heron and the harrier to breed.

Tiengemeten Tiengemeten is located in the middle of the Haring­ vliet. Once on the ferry you will immediately be overwhelmed by the holiday feeling on the way to this smallest inhabited island of the Netherlands. Upon arrival, first walk into the visitor centre. The hospitable volunteers are happy to help you on your way to a wonderful day out. Hikers and cyclists can indulge themselves in this car-free nature reserve with historic buildings. Children can play in the Speelnatuur. Lovers of nostalgia and paintings will be happy at the Agricultural Museum and the Rien Poortvliet Museum.

Head out into nature on Voorne-Putten Go for it! From woods to dunes and from seals to spoonbills: the island is a paradise in terms of flora and fauna. You like some fresh air and some strolling? In the vicinity of Hellevoetsluis one can do some great hiking, for instance around the Quackjeswater. The route around this dune lake is 3 kilometres – and surely don’t forget to pause at the viewpoint. Allow the birdwatcher inside you to emerge!

There will be a lot to choose from! Getting on your bike for a nice trip across the dykes? Then make sure you choose the right stops: buy a really fresh ice-cream on a farm yard, or rest at a pleasant coffee stop that has a playground. Walk along the banks, climb the watch tower and spot the Highland cattle. Recreation area Binnenmaas has everything to offer for a day of leisure: the beautiful outdoor swimming pool with lawns, the massive playground, full of activity opportunities and the children’s farm.

The Hoeksche Waard is an area where delicious products are grown. You can notice it when riding along the extensive farmlands. Pop in at one of the many farm shops, where you can buy freshly grown products.

When the time is right, you will be welcome at several farms to pick fruit, carrots and beetroots or create a nice bunch of flowers in the flower garden.

Biking is a relaxed way to discover the Hoeksche Waard.

You can choose from more than 300 kilometres of biking routes that take you to the most beautiful spots along the water and through the polder. Using the bicycle junctions, you can also plan a route for yourself. Hop on a bike-and-foot ferry to go to the next island, for instance Tiengemeten. That is island hopping at its best.

The great variety of hiking trails takes you to astounding spots. Follow the dykes and enjoy the beautiful views, walk along the green banks or go into a wooded area with remarkable flora and fauna. You can choose a walk from the nearly 500 kilometres of walking trails.

The rivers surrounding our island and the creeks on it offer many opportunities for water recreation. Dive into the open water or go on a canoe trip. Do you have your own boat with you? Then moor in one of the many village harbours or marinas.

While on the island, you will pass the many villages of the Hoeksche Waard. AT JUST 30 MINUTES FROM VOORNE-PUTTEN

Rotterdam Kop Van Zuid

This peninsula is connected with the city by the Erasmus bridge and has history as well as modern architecture, while the building The Rotterdam, by Rem Koolhaas, is the most striking. History and nostalgia can be experienced in the famous New York Hotel, the former head-office of the Holland America Line, where thousands of emigrants used to set off to North America, hoping to find a better life there. Nowadays majestic cruise ships frequently moor at the Cruise Terminal. Currently, old warehouses as well as new towers accommodate cultural institutions and restaurants. For dishes from around the world, you can visit the Food halls or you can go and see a performance in the beautiful new Luxor Theatre.

Katendrecht From the Kop Van Zuid, you can simply walk across the Rijnhavenbrug to the peninsula of Katendrecht, a dream destination for foodies, also known as the “home of the hip”. Around the atmospheric Deliplein (Deli Square) you can find an array of nice restau96

rants, lunchrooms, cafes and terraces. Showpiece of the island is the former cruise ship, the SS Rotterdam, that used to sail between Rotterdam and Manhattan in the 1960’s and now has its berth at the kop Van Katendrecht.

Noordereiland Centred in the Nieuwe Maas, you can find a historic island, connected with the rest of the city by a number of exceptional bridges. The red Willemsbrug connects the Noordereiland with the city and most people will recognise the famous Erasmusbrug with its asymmetric pylons. Here, you can enjoy a wonderful walk along the river Maas and gaze at the impressive skyline. In the summer, pop-up seafood restaurant A la Plancha can be found on the old bridgehead of the Willemsbrug.

and the Hoogstraat, via the underground metro station Beursplein. If you go down the Hoogstraat, towards the Grotemarkt, you can visit the Market hall of Rotterdam. In this indoor Market hall, you can find around 100 fresh food units, 15 food shops and various restaurants. If you look up, you can see the art work ‘Horn of plenty’ and you can also visit the free-access exhibition with archaeological findings of the medieval town of Rotterdam, that were excavated here during the construction.

Museum park

Rotterdam is by far the largest port in Europe. The port is bustling with activity and if you do a cruise, you can experience the busy traffic of sea vessels and inland ships from up close. But from the water you will also have a view on the impressive skyline of Rotterdam. Most cruises will depart from Maaskade, but there is also a tour from the information centre FutureLand on Maasvlakte 2, where you will see the largest container ships and most modern container terminals.

Zeeland From Voorne-Putten cross the Haringvliet as well as the Grevelingen waterways, and you already reached Zeeland! Right there you will also find a variety of water sports, beautiful nature and in the Zeeland towns you can enjoy monumental properties, lovely salty delicacies and local drinks.

The islands of Zeeland are connected by bridges and dams and they all have their own characteristics. It is the water that connects them.

Schouwen-Duiveland If you cross the Brouwersdam, the holiday spirit is already welcoming you. This island is truly loved by many tourists because of its beautiful beaches, historical sites and its nature. In Ouwerkerk you will find the imposing Watersnoodmuseum, where they maintain the memory of the 1953 flood disaster. You can go shopping in, for instance, the monumental town of Zierikzee. But the island also attracts many water sport enthusiasts, cyclists and hikers. Enjoy the water in a different way? Then book a seal safari.

Burgh-Haamstede and Renesse are recommended to beach lovers.

Noord-Beveland This island is connected with Schouwen-Duiveland by the Oosterscheldekering and the Zeelandbrug. The Oosterscheldekering is undoubtedly the most imposing part of the Delta works. At the Deltapark Neeltje Jans, visitors learn everything about the history of 98

Delta works, for children there is a sealion show, Blue­ reef Aquarium Zeeland and an aquatic playground.

Here you can also book a boat excursion on the Oosterschelde and admire the Delta works from the water.

Zuid-Beveland On this island you will find the vibrant heart of Zeeland, which is Goes. Goes makes you feel at home, you can go shopping for the day, relax on a terrace or take a walk past the monuments. De Zak van Zuid-Beveland is one of the most beautiful polder landscapes in The Netherlands. In the spring, you will find an abundance of flowering fruit trees and De Zak is a popular hiking and biking area. Yerseke is the right place for the finest mussels and oysters. The Mosseldag (Mussel Day) is one of the annual highlights in Yerseke, a great fair in the village.

Walcheren The capital of Zeeland, Middelburg, is situated on Walcheren. But you will also find well-known coastal towns here, such as Domburg, Zoutelande and Veere on the Veerse Meer. In the harbour town of Vlis­ singen you can enjoy the fresh air along the longest sea boulevard in The Netherlands. To get to know Vlissingen and the maritime history of Zeeland, a visit to the MuZEEum (MuSEAum) is recommended.

Walcheren has the perfect mix of lively towns and villages, a wonderful coast line and a peaceful agricultural hinterland.
