MUNICIPALITIES ON VOORNE-PUTTEN
Brielle The city on Lake Briel exudes memories of a distant past. The city has received kings and queens in its rich history and counted sea admirals, writers, poets and martyrs among its residents. The old fortressed city and most famous pilgrimage site of South Holland tells, through the more than 300 monuments, the story of the Libertatis Primitiae, “first fruits of freedom”. On April 1, 1572, the city was taken by the Watergeuzen and took its important place in every history

book regarding the Eighty Years’ War. The ramparts with its bastions and ravelins still offer protection against the outside world and a safe haven for the many churches and treasures of Brielle.
Hellevoetsluis The beautiful location of the vast Haringvliet has played an important role in the course of history for Hellevoetsluis. Not for nothing that it is the “Fortress City on the Haringvliet. The Fortress, with its ports and defenses, is home to a rich wealth of history. The water and Hellevoetsluis are traditionally connected. Thanks to its favourable and strategic location on the Haringvliet, Hellevoetsluis became a home base for the Dutch war fleet in the early 17th century. A port that later became more and more reinforced, creating the unique combination of a fortressed city and a war port. Admirals such as de Ruyter, Tromp and Piet Hein have had their home port here.

All these villages are located in the vicinity of the Bernisse, an ancient river that was an important shipping route between Holland and Flanders in the early Middle Ages. Nowadays, the Bernisse is a beautiful recreational area with walking and cycling paths and

playing fields. Beningerslikken, located on the tidal river Het Spui, is a nature reserve where bird lovers can indulge. Various cosy restaurants are located throughout the area.
Westvoorne Oostvoorne, Rockanje and Tinte together form the greenest municipality of Voorne-Putten. Oostvoorne, with its Jacoba Burcht, is a perfect base for wonderful cycling and walking tours or a discovery tour by horse through the green forests. Tinte is in one beautiful polder landscape. Every year there is a big Summer party with children’s activities, street theater and music. The village even has two museums. Westvoorne, part of the Southwestern Delta, has been awarded as the best sustainable nature destination in the world due to its unspoilt, liveable nature, enormous biodiversity and sustainable tourism.

Voorne-Putten has 15 kilometres of special coastline. Experience the enormous space and taste the salty sea air. Enjoy stepping onto the sand of the only south facing beach in the Netherlands or above it hanging on the kite. Ride on the beach with your horse and stay and watch the amazing sunset. Voorne-Putten has something for everyone who loves the beach.
Rockanje beach, the country’s only south facing beach, is totally geared to bathing guests. Due to its unique position, the beach is a true paradise for sunbathers. Whether you just want to enjoy the sun or be active on the water, Badstrand Rockanje has everything you need. The beach slopes very gradually towards the sea and the sandbanks off the coast prevent waves from disrupting your swimming. The beach is therefore ideal for children who can safely play at the water’s edge. At the beach you can do kite surfing, paddle boarding, long boarding, beach yoga and various beach games. You can also have something to eat and drink at one of the beach pavilions. Rockanje beach is accessible via the first and the second entrance. To the north of the Badstrand, there is nudist beach. Every year, Badstrand Rockanje receives the highest award for its very clean beaches and has been awarded the Blue Flag.
Oostvoorne Beach Nature lovers will prefer Oostvoorne beach. This beach offers peace and space. New dunes are constantly developing here and the unspoiled natural beach is very popular among walkers, horse riders and kite surfers.
On the beach at the lighthouse you will enjoy the Haringvliet, and with the old fortress around the corner, you’ve got a wonderful place to stay; A small beach situated in the fortified town of Hellevoetsluis. Children can clamber over playground equipment, such as the pirate ship. The beach next to Marina Cape Helius has a friendly atmosphere. The Quackstrand on the Haringvliet is shallow until a long way out from the bank, so ideal for small children. Sheltered by the Haringvlietdam, the less experienced surfers, sailors and kayakers can gain experience. The Quackstrand has various amenities to complete your enjoyment. The Quackstrand has the Blue Flag, an internationally recognised certification awarded annually to beaches which are clean and safe.
Maasvlakte Beach The coastline of Voorne-Putten has grown since the expansion of the Maasvlakte. Maasvlakte 2 directly links up with the current Maasvlakte. The Slufterstrand has therefore largely disappeared. Due to the popularity of the Slufterstrand, it was decided to restore the lost beach during the construction of Maasvlakte 2. The coastal area past Maasvlakte 2 is not a beach with a boulevard and lots of cafes and restaurants. This would not reflect the function of the land reclamation as a port and industrial area. However, it is somewhere where people can enjoy sun, sea, beach, wind and tranquillity. The Maasvlakte beach is mainly known for its ideal conditions for surfers and kiters. Kiters have their own extended section of beach at their disposal. Infrastructure and sufficient parking ensure good accessibility by car and bicycle.
Beach pavilions Enjoy the sunset on the beach and end the day or week with a nice snack and a drink. Then you can go to different beach pavilions on the different beaches of Voorne-Putten.
The beaches on VoornePutten are clean and safe and are awarded annually with the international Blue Flag award.

Look for special birds such as the European Bald Eagle, Spoonbill or Large Tern. Spot them in nature, or from one of the bird huts of bird boulevard Hellegatsplaat or bird observatory TIJ. Those who visit this island in the winter may be lucky to find a group of wild flamingos at Battenoord.
Do you like the beach and the sea? At Ouddorp and Brouwersdam you will find wide sandy beaches and a vast dune area! Relax and enjoy a wonderful day at the beach. Aside from the amazing North Sea beaches, Voorne-Putten has many other beautiful waterways where you can relax, swim, do sports and daydream!
ON AND BY THE WATER
Oostvoornse meer In a beautiful location, between the Brielse Meer and the North Sea, you will find the Oostvoornse Meer. A recreational area close to the harbour of Rotterdam. If you look out from the north side of the lake, you will be able to see the ‘Green Beach’, and from the other side you can see the cranes of the Maasvlakte. Because of this, it’s a somewhat surreal place where people, plants and animals will feel at home. There are a lot of options for recreation here, with amazing beaches, various options for paddleboarding, surfing and being under water. There are a lot of facilities for underwater diving. There are a lot of shipwrecks to see, and sometimes even new ones are discovered. A lot of props have been sunk especially for divers. A few famous examples are the underwater (Volkswagen) Beetle and tunnel of 46 metres. Around the lake you will find a few nice catering places, with very good terraces. There are various locations to get your gear so you can get on or in the water.
The recreational area Brielse Meer of over 10 kilometres long is a green oasis between the island of Voorne on the south side and the harbour of Rotterdam on the north side. People who play water sports will be thrilled by the countless possibilities, like swimming, water cycling, water skiing, sport fishing or just paddling. There is a beautiful cycling path around the lake, which will take you past many beaches, harbours, playing areas and catering places. With the ferry Geuzenveer you can cross the Brielse Meer on foot or with your bicycle.

Marina Hellevoetsluis has six fantastic harbours with a total of about two thousand berths. They provide a perfect base for watersports enthusiasts who love the wide open water of the Haringvliet and the sea. From Hellevoetsluis you can sail deeper into the Zeeland Delta and South Holland, either along the waterways or by sea. The marinas in Heliushaven are located close to a beautiful nature reserve and the historic fortress and have an open connection with the Haringvliet. The marinas in the canal are a stone’s throw away from the shopping centre. www.jachthavenhellevoetsluis.nl www.marina-capehelius.nl
Haringvliet The Haringvliet is a former bay between Voorne-Putten, the Hoeksche Waard and Goeree-Overflakkee. At the end of 2018 the sluice doors of the Haringvlietdam were gradually put ajar. This was done so that fishes, like the salmon and the sturgeon can migrate between sea and river again. Boardwalks, natural playgrounds, lookouts and a bird spotting dome ensure that everyone can enjoy the unique nature around the Haringvliet. This area is ideal for cycling, hiking, boatrenting, fishing or playing and splashing at the Quackstrand beach in Hellevoetsluis. www.happyboats.nl
Linquenda The Linquenda || is a klipperaak and was built in 1914. The klipperaak is a Dutch inland-sailing vessel. The ship transports walkers and cyclists from Middelharnis, Stellendam and Tiengemeten in the summer months. On these trips on the Haringvliet, there’s no sailing but the sailing ship functions as a motorboat. www.gezelligzeilen.nl
Bodysliding off the waterjump Brouwersdam’s most spectacular attraction is the Water Jump. This ‘ski jump’ nearly 8 metres high with two separate slides is located on the banks of the Grevelingen lake, right next to the terrace of Brouwersdam Sale & Surf Centre. For those who dare, diving off the Water Jump offers a sensational and refreshing leap into the Grevelingen lake.

Kite-surfing on Voorne-Putten
Both are working at the campsite, Linda on a fulltime basis because she will take over the camping from her parents in the future. Willi is Linda’s friend and came to work as an instructor at the kite surfing school three years ago, with the intention of staying one season and then traveling. But nothing has come of traveling after meeting Linda. In the meantime, Linda has also obtained her diploma as an instructor and they are both now teaching, but they also regularly kite surf in their free time.
Beginners spot The nearby beach of Oostvoorne is a wonderful place for the beginning kite surfer. “This beach is really a beginner’s spot”, says Linda. “An ideal spot for the novice kite surfer, because it is in a bay and the water is shallow, so you have little waves and no current. It’s a bit of a walk from the large parking lot, but it’s worth it of course because you’ll stay on the beach for a few hours, especially if it concerns a kite surfing lesson.” And as Willi
adds: “You immediately warm up your muscles. Afterwards, you can take a shower and change your clothes in the specially made spaces at the Restaurant aan Zee. Another advantage is that only kite surfing schools with a license can come here so that the number of kite surfers is limited”. Willi would like to emphasise that this location is also a nature reserve. This is indicated on an information sign at the parking lot and can be seen on other posts as well. On the right is a nature reserve and the left for kite surfers. Due to ignorance, or by mischance, this sometimes goes wrong and kite surfers end up in the nature reserve. Both indicate that kite surfing is not a sport that you can practice without having first had lessons. It is an extreme sport that can be dangerous not only for the athlete themselves, but also for the other beachlovers. Oostvoorne beach is a beloved and well-known spot for beginning kite surfers and they come from all over the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and even France.

Kite surfers on Voorne-Putten, it’s fun to watch, admire their tricks and enjoy along with them a bit. We are curious as to why they love to come to our beaches and what the nicest places are to kite surf. To learn more about it, we agreed to talk with Linda Sjoukes and Willi Meirs at the Ketjil campsite, where a kite surfing school has been established since 1999.
Sports in the middle of nature is fantastic
A beach a little further away…. “Have you already mastered the art of kite surfing a bit? Then you can go to the Slufterstrand (beach) on the Maasvlakte. This is also a beautiful area where nature and kite surfing go well together. The current and waves are not that big here due to the location and the sandbanks. Behind the Slufter beach is the rescue brigade building and the beach entrances for bathers follow. Kite surfing is not allowed there, but beyond these turns, a section is also specified for water sports enthusiasts and fishermen. There are more waves on this rear part of the Maasvlakte beach and it is really only intended for the experienced kite surfer. You can also kite surf on the sport beach of Rockanje. Especially when there is a lot of wind coming from the north, Rockanje is a good spot. And Rockanje is now also a beloved area for a new branch of sport, the so-called hydrofoiling.”
rounded by nature. Curious seals regularly come off their sandbars to take a look. You can sometimes come across some porpoises as well. These locations are therefore not only loved by water sports enthusiasts, but also by nature lovers and bird spotters.” In addition to kite surfing, both Linda and Willi also like to go surfing, paddle boarding, catamaran sailing and are very enthusiastic about the mountain bike trail around the Oostvoornse Meer (lake). In short, this enthusiastic, sporty couple of nature lovers feel completely at home at Voorne-Putten!

ON AND BY THE WATER
Cast out a fishing rod Voorne-Putten is known as one of the areas with the highest fish concentration in the Netherlands and is a paradise for anglers. From wreck fishing, fly fishing to belly boat fishing, from fishing in the polder, on a lake, a ditch or canal, these are all options on Voorne-Putten. Salt
Voorne-Putten has a beautiful coastline where you can fish a plenty. When there is an onshore wind, the fish feed on sand eels and that can produce nice catches. And there are also beautiful fishing spots in the middle of the port area of Rotterdam Europoort. If you go fishing at the Oude Maas you can catch both salt and freshwater fish. The Haringvliet was already an attractive fishing area, but this has increased due to the opening of the Haringvliet locks. The Haringvliet will once again become the crucial gateway to the Rhine and Maas and migratory fish such as salmon and sturgeon can benefit from this.
In the polders of Voorne-Putten, but also in the recreational areas Brielse Meer, Bernisse and Oostvoornse Meer, you can enjoy good fishing. You will find nice fishing spots with a wide variety of fish species. The Oostvoornse Meer, for example, is very suitable for fly fishermen. There are trout swimming there that have record dimensions due to the favourable living conditions. Lake Briel offers beautiful sheltered fishing spots along the shore, but the islands in the lake are also popular. The quality of the water of the Bernisse is very good and the quiet Bernisse therefore also has a nice stock of fish. If you are looking for a fishing challenge, then there’s the Spui, with its strong current. And the fishing spots around the fortifications of Brielle and Hellevoetsluis are of course also unique. In short, Voorne-Putten has plenty of fishing possibilities. In order to fish on Voorne-Putten island, you need a fishing permit or pass. Midicamping van der Burgh Hidden in the polder, centrally located between Rockanje and Hellevoetsluis, lies “Midicamping Van der Burgh”. A campsite that has not grown into a leisure park but a medium-sized family campsite that offers spacious tourist camping pitches with comfort all year round. The clean, heated plumbing completes the comfortable feeling. The pitches are divided over a number of smallscale open fields that are separated from each other by high vegetation. Every field has a friendly atmosphere with a limited number of campers, people who easily make contact with the other guests. Bunkers, mills, ships, maritime history, the island of Voorne-Putten has a rich collection of museums. From the rural Stenen Baak to the impressive Historical Museum Den Briel, where you can step right into the Eighty Years’ War. Water rats and sprayers are also in their element in the Jan Blanken Dry Dock and the National Fire Museum in Hellevoetsluis.
Musea historical heritage Jan Blanken Dry Dock The Jan Blanken Dry Dock is the oldest surviving dry dock in the Netherlands and unique of its kind in terms of structure. The dry dock was built between 1798 and 1822 and is still in use for the maintenance of small vessels. Often these are historic ships. A visit to the dock is a unique experience for young and old, and takes you back in time to the era of the great naval heroes. The dry dock consists of two separate docks – Kieldok for minor maintenance and Timmerdok for major repairs and shipbuilding. A special feature is the ‘ship door’ that seals off the dock. The visitor centre has interactive displays which allow you to explore its history for yourself and to see, hear and read all about the dry dock and its architect. The tours are highly recommended – part of them involve walking through the historic tunnels, which could be flooded in order to quickly put out any fires in the dock. www.droogdok.nl

St. Catharine’s Church When driving towards Brielle, the 60-metre tall tower of St. Catherine’s Church is visible from afar – so it’s quite something to consider that it was originally intended to be twice as tall! In 1575, stadholder William of Orange married his third wife Charlotte de Bourbon in St. Catherine’s Church, by way of thanks for the liberation of Brielle by the sea beggars on 1 April 1572. A stainedglass window in the church commemorates the event. From this tower, Mary Stuart waved off her husband, stadholder William III, on 11 November 1688. Stadholder William III left for England with a large military retinue intent on defeating the king of England, in which aim he was successful, and in the year 1689, he was crowned king of the Netherlands. If you would like to enjoy the view from the tower yourself, you can do so in the summer months. www.catharijnekerk.nl

De Duinhuisjes in Rockanje The open-air museum “De Duinhuisjes” contains four original dune farms dating from 1850 to 1910. The dwellings are decorated in the style that was customary around the years 1900-1930. They have the same basic shape, but differ in layout and design, depending on the occupation of the residents, the “Dûnmieren”. Furniture and utensils, mostly from donations, complete the interiors. There is also a pigsty, chicken coop, open wagon shed, wells and a laundry room. The whole has a beautiful garden with fruit trees, multicoloured flowers and a few beehives. In 2016, the “Dûnhus” was opened, which serves as a visitor centre, with a shop. Coffee, tea and lemonade are available. Every year we furnish one of the houses in a themed exhibition. Our passion! There is much to experience in the fortress of Hellevoetsluis. For centuries it was the most important naval port in the Netherlands. You will find an impressive coastal battery with various buildings such as a barracks, gunpowder and missiles repository, fort, and a robust 24 cm cannon. Curious about the stories behind these defenses, we went to talk to Bram Kap in Kazerne Haerlem. Bram is the chairman and board member of the Defense
Works Foundation. Panels with time periods are hanging in the visitor centre and you get a good idea of what has happened in this fortressed city over the years through maps and aerial photos. In the room there are tables in which you can see found and excavated objects from days gone by. “During the tours that we give, we often ask people walking by if they would also like to come along on a tour. People then many times say, “I walk here every day”. But many people walk here every day but don’t know what they see”, says Bram. “With a bit of explanation, you put it all into context, then you get the complete story.” Children who come to the visitor centre can dress up in the military suits that are waiting for them in the dress up chest.
“Children who put on a helmet for the first time sometimes almost collapse because the helmets are really heavy.” There are also two old round cannon balls so that the children can feel how heavy they are. “It is important that children nowadays learn about what happened then. People sometimes ask me; “Are you for war?” And then I answer; Certainly not, actually I’m against it! But I want to tell the story of freedom. Above all, we must not forget that many of the freedoms we have right now, we owe to what has happened throughout the ages. In addition, I do this work to give people an experience; what happened in the past, and, on the other hand, I also find a piece of architecture very interesting. What has all been built, and for what purpose? Without the casualties or warfare, but mainly because these kinds of buildings still exist. It is very special and amazing that they could build in that way at the time. It is therefore threefold that I am so excited about this.”
We try to offer an experience “As a foundation, with more than 15 motivated volunteers, we try to get people enthusiastic about military heritage. We do this by organising various activities such as guided tours, or theme tours such as the Second World War walk. Next year we will certainly offer activities that tie in with the celebration of 75 years of liberation from the Netherlands. We also have “Do-day”, which is a fun afternoon for children. We have worked out a photo search where children get a fan of photos, and when they have found those objects in the photos, they get a letter
It is important that children nowadays learn about what happened then
War tactics ‘I think the oldest building in Hellevoetsluis is the powder house, built around 1650. Around 1705, when the city walls were finished, it was first thought that you could defend the city with stone walls, that they were sturdy enough and unbreakable. The defenses were used differently over time. The war tactics changed. Later you see that stronger guns and heavier bullets came, and that an earthen wall worked better than stone. You had the Circles Act around the fortress. Houses had to be made of wood, so that the field of fire around the fortress could be quickly cleared. If necessary, the houses were burned down.”
Cannon 24 IJ “There is also an authentic barrel of a cannon from 1873 here. It was found on the beach at the Quack. Thanks to Arie van der Ban, this barrel has been brought to Hellevoetsluis. After that it spent years in front of the Brandweermuseum, with the other cannon barrels that stand there. It was later restored and a good gun carriage was recreated based on the original drawings. Once there were thirteen of these guns here on the coastal battery.” 49

that corresponds to a number that they find on a form. In this way we hope to educate the children in what’s a bunker, and what’s not. The bunker escape is also a favourite. That is fun to do with the whole family. Parents can help and you can see the children discussing what they see here with their parents later on.”
Lectures “In the winter we give lectures, where we offer interesting themes. Themes that fit into the context of Hellevoetse history. In terms of knowledge, we get a lot of information from the Voorne-Putten Regional Archive, the Hellevoetsluis City Museum and the National Archive. Today we tell what we know today and tomorrow we tell what we know tomorrow, because it has sometimes turned out that, with history, we had interpreted it differently than it really was. And that, after further investigation, other facts emerged whereby history sometimes went a little differently than we thought before and had to adjust the story.”
Voorne-Putten “From a military point of view, the island is very rich, for example, the Biberbunker in Oostvoorne and Fort Noorddijk and Fort Pentserdijk. During the restoration, they found many small objects from the Second World War on the latter fort. You can view these during Voorne in Stelling and on Open Monument Day! During Voorne in Stelling you can also go to the bunker complex, on private land, on the Windgatse weg. This is highly recommended. There’s a large hospital bunker and a command bunker that’s quite big and still almost completely intact.”

Walk through history Brielle has a rich history and breathes memories of a distant past. You will find examples of this rich past at many places in the city centre. Beautiful facing bricks, plaques, and most especially the many listed buildings, have their own story. The Brielle guide group can tell you all about this but of course you can also go on your own. There are several city walks available at the Historisch Museum Den Briel. Opposite the museum is the statue of former queen Wilhelmina, the guide group departure point in high season. www.gidsengroepbrielle.nl
Naval heroes route In historic Hellevoetsluis you can follow in the footsteps of our naval hero Admiral Michiel de Ruyter by setting off with this naval hero. The historic city guide will take you on a voyage of discovery around the fortified harbour of Hellevoetsluis in search of the maritime past. Starting in 1602, the beginning of the Dutch East India Company period, the port of Hellevoetsluis was the most important Dutch naval port for hundreds of years. Piet Hein brought the Spanish treasure fleet he captured (Zilvervloot) to shore here and Admirals Michiel de Ruyter and Maarten Tromp set sail from this port, on their way to their battles on the high seas. www.bezoekhellevoetsluis.nl
By horse The wind through your hair, the salty air in your nose, on a cheerful, neighing horse, what else do you want? Horse riding enthusiasts can indulge themselves at Voorne-Putten. There are beautiful equestrian routes all over the island that lead through forests, polders, dunes and, of course, over the beach. The bridle paths have recently been refurbished in Westvoorne. This way you can make a route around the Oostvoorne lake of 11 kilometres. This beautiful route runs on paths, beach and horse tracks. The beaches are open to riders throughout the year. Only the bathing beach of Rockanje from 1 April to 1 October between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. is prohibited for horses. But you can also find beautiful equestrian routes along Lake Briel, the Bernisse recreation area and De Uitwaayer Spijkenisse nature and recreation areas. 57

Historically tasty! A manager, a beer sommelier and two hobby brewers sat at the bar in a Briels cafÊ and wondered why a historic city such as Den Briel no longer had its own beer. That’s how the Brielsch Brouwers Guild was created five years ago.
Ronald Driessen, who spent his childhood in Heenvliet, Marco Zwaan who grew up in Spijkenisse and Maarten Zoetemeijer who lived in Brielle from the age of eleven, now form the Brielsch Bierbrouwers Guild. These men are true enthusiasts and don’t brew because it’s hip and happening, but because it’s their passion. They make their own recipes and even use the stirring rod themselves. On a Sunday morning we walk into the small brewery on the Kaatsbaan in Brielle and find two of the three men brewing. In the small brewery, where they brew test brews and beer for the adjacent beer café, they are working hard on an autumn bock beer. “We would prefer to brew everything ourselves here, but it’s not possible in this small space, which is why we also brew more at other breweries. We rent a kettle wherever there is room and there we make beer according to our own recipe”, the men say enthusiastically. “Because it is a huge success, we really need the space at other breweries to be able to meet demand. It’s more like a hobby that got out of hand”, they add with a smile.
Local ingredients “We think working out the recipes is the best there is. To convert the idea what you have of a certain beer and what taste you ultimately want into an actual recipe. To work towards it so that you can also get that taste out of the ingredients is a nice process. So that you are ultimately satisfied with your end product. It’s just like cooking actually; by using the right ingredients you work towards a certain taste. The entire brewing process is great fun, we like to experiment with new ingredients. For Rockanje, for example, we are going to brew a special beer. This municipality has been around for 800 years this year and the mayor has asked us if we want to develop a beer for them. It will be a new type of beer for us, which we have not brewed before. For example, we use sea buckthorn and unmalted wheat for this. The wheat and sea buckthorn berry naturally come from Voorne-Putten. We want to produce our beer as locally as possible. The sea buckthorn berry will give off an interesting, citruslike taste. It will be a fresh wheat beer that will go
“the Moordenaartje”, this beer is called that because it really is a “murderer” well with Rockanje, with its bathing beach and with the sun and sea. That is really fun for us, because we now mainly brew heavier beers.”
History “We like to link the names of our beers to the history of Voorne-Putten.For example, our blond beer Angelus, which was voted best (light) blond beer in the Netherlands in 2018, owes its name to Angelus Merula. That was a priest from Brielle who, in his time, the years 1482-1557, wanted to reform the Catholic Church and adhered to Protestant ideas. 63
Rockanje, and it is now expanding to Spijkenisse, so you will find us on almost the entire island. We are now called the Brielsch Brouwers Guild, but we are actually the Voorne-Puttens Guild, because we brew for the whole of Voorne-Putten. That is also our goal; we want to conquer the entire island!” www.brielschbrouwersgilde.nl
We are actually the Voorne-Puttens Guild, because we brew for the whole of Voorne-Putten! He was imprisoned in the Ravesteyn van Heenvliet Ruins and was later sentenced to death. The Moordenaartje (8.5% alc.) is named after the tram of the Rotterdam Electric Tramway Company that has driven over the island here. A couple of serious accidents happened with this tram, because pedestrians were not used to the tram at the time and often tried to shoot past the tram quickly. The tram was popularly called “the Moordenaartje”. This beer is called that because it really is a “murderer”. Don’t drink three in a row or they’ll knock you out. “The men check the temperature on one of the brewing kettles and stir with the stirring stick and then proudly continue to tell about their beloved beer. “Den Tienden Penninck, is the name of an amber blond beer. This beer was the first beer we brought out. Of course, we needed a name for the beer and it owes its name to a competition that we had announced then. It is named after an important fact from Brielian history. “The tenth medal” was in fact a tax measure that Alva introduced in the Eighty Years’ War, which put a lot pressure on the population. And De Gecroonde Bock, a double bock beer, for example, is named after the Briel brewery “t Gecroonde Hart that was located in Brielle in the years 1598 to 1896.”

Step out of the shade of the dense forest and into the dry dune sand of Voornes Duin. A unique dune area where, thanks to the presence of forests, moist dune valleys, dams, ponds and large dune lakes, you can stand eye to eye with wild horses or Galloway cattle and enjoy a huge variety of plants and birds.
Slikken van Voorne
The Slikken van Voorne area is located west of Oostvoorne. It has an eventful history. Situated in the mouth of the river Maas, where the tides had free play, channels, sandbars and dunes once formed there. In the last century, large-scale projects were carried out off the coast of Voorne; the Maas was dammed and the Maasvlakte created by land reclamation. The dunes were raised and anchored. As a result, the natural dynamics largely disappeared from this area. But nature had a surprise in store. On the south side of the Maasvlakte,

channels and sandbars were created by tidal action. This process is still going on.Thanks to the natural development of this area, many species of plants have established themselves here. The mud flats are home to
valleys, dry sandy slopes, thickets, pools and large dune lakes. From the shadow of dense woodland you suddenly step onto the dry dune sand. Thanks to this variety, the Voorne dunes boast many species of plants and birds. And despite being located close to the port of Rotterdam, this is a place of peace and quiet. The large dune lakes Quackjeswater and Breede Water are rich in waterfowl. Here, cormorant and spoonbill colonies have established themselves. In autumn, shrubs covered in berries provide a feast for migrating starlings, red wings and fieldfares. The Voorne dunes are rich in many varieties of plants and are known for their diversity of orchids. And the plants, in turn, attract butterflies In the northern part of the dunes, you may encounter large grazing

animals, Icelandic horses and Galloway cattle. These help
Zuid-Hollands Landschap, the organisation responsible, to keep the dune area open.
Groene strand On the banks of Oostvoorne lake, a lagoon has been excavated and a number of bird islands created where you can enjoy the sight of geese, ducks, plover and breeding pairs of common tern. In the shallow waters of the lagoon, egrets and spoonbills hunt for food. A walking route has been created through the area, with various bird-watching screens. Dogs permitted on leash.
Spuimonding west (Beningerslikken) Where the Spui flows into the Haringvliet is the Spuimonding south of Zuidland. Here you can enjoy nature to the full in the Spuimonding West nature reserve. There is a footpath that takes you through the entire reserve via a bridge and a rope ferry. Bring provisions with you and take a seat on one of the benches provided. Climb the viewing tower on the eastern edge of the reserve. From the top, you have wonderful views over the Spui and the Haringvliet and much of Voorne-Putten and Hoeksche Waard. The landscape in Spuimonding West is varied. There is undergrowth, salt marshes and mudflats, all rich in food. This landscape is ideal as a spawning and breeding ground for fish and birds. Among the birds you can see there are some which enjoy special protection, such as the spoonbill, the little egret and the gadwall. The area is large enough to tempt reed birds like the bearded reedling, the black-crowned night heron and the harrier to breed.
The Bernisse recreation area consists of a centuries-old polder landscape that lies between the Spui and the Voedingskanaal. The Bernisse area is seven kilometres long and runs from Heenvliet through the polders to Zuidland. It consists of ponds, basins and lakes. Together with the woods, marshes and meadows, the area is 300 hectares in size. It has since grown to become one of the richest recreation areas in the region in terms of flora and fauna. Bernisse is perfect for exploring on foot. It is largely accessible – only in the breeding period is walking not permitted everywhere. In summer, Bernisse is heavily used by the residents of Nissewaard. You can swim, canoe and surf there, or just enjoy walking or running, and there are various fishing spots for anglers. You can sail on the river Bernisse in an electric boat..
The Mildenburg estate at Oostvoorne was developed over the course of the 18th century by the Van LeydenVan Leeuwen family. It was a splendid baroque garden with large straight avenues, a maze and a tea house with some sculptures. Only the large main avenue survives as a reminder of the estate, along with some parts of the other avenues. The estate itself has disappeared. An old beech forest marks the transition from the estate to the inner dune woodland. A high dune offers views of the Groene Strand beach and Oostvoorne lake. The Wielewaalroute is a marked walking route two kilometres long and you can park on Hoflaan in Oostvoorne. Dogs permitted on leash. 89

Marine mammals and birds on Voorne-Putten
To see and hear more about the life of animal and plant species in the sea and on the beaches of VoornePutten, we are going out with Ad van den Berge from Oostvoorne. Ad is retired, but busier than ever. He is chairman of Voorne Maasvlakte, Strand in Zicht, member of Team Westvoorne First Aid for Marine Mammals (EHBZ) and guide of inventories of birds and marine mammals. He is also a fanatic bird counter, previously he was in the top ten of bird watchers. With every report that comes in, he grabs his robust beach rover to see where he can offer help.
Three Ospreys on a Monday morning We start early in the morning, then we have the best chance of reporting on animals in need. As we drive towards the beach of Rockanje, Ad tells everything about different birds that we encounter. Cheerful tapas flying from Norway to Africa are flying above. We are lucky. Suddenly Ad stops the beach rover, hands us the binoculars and asks whether we can see what kind of bird is on the pole. It is an Osprey, his favourite bird. Full of enthusiasm, Ad grabs his bird book and shows us the animal up close. We drive a bit further and see another one sitting with a tasty fish clasped in his claws. A little further on we see another one. Three Ospreys on a Monday morning, that’s quite unique! The Osprey feeds on some tasty fish here, but then moves on further south. 92
Voornes Dune in migration Some birds just come to rest and enjoy the nutrientrich area. Other birds such as the well-known spoonbill come here to breed and have become loyal guests, which is even passed on to the next generation. The Voornes Duin (dune) is very popular with birds, mainly because of the nutrient-rich mud flats, the freshwater pools and the enormous amount of plants, more than seven hundred and fifty species. These are often plants with berries, and that’s what birds love. The migratory birds like to come back for these berries, but they also ensure new growth, because they defecate the seeds from the berries that they ate in Norway, for example.
Porpoise spotting in Rockanje There are no animals in need this morning. Now we have enough time for Ad’s many beautiful stories. That’s how he starts telling us about porpoises. Especially in the winter, you have a good chance of spotting these beautiful animals. Is there a high tide? Take your binoculars to the beach, grab a blanket and have a little patience. Unlike most dolphins, bottle nose porpoises almost never stand out from the water. You can spot them when they come up to
breathe. These animals sometimes wash up on the beach, people see them lying in the sand and call 088-2747795. Then it’s time to take action. Ad shows us a photo of the beautiful porpoise that they were happy to help.
Beach Rover Adventures Ad proudly shows us a number of glass vases containing beach treasures such as whale vertebrae, rabbit bones, starfish and ray eggs. As chairman of Stichting Strand in Zicht (a beach foundation), Ad believes it is important to promote information about the protection of nature and marine life. This gives visitors more respect for nature and will have more of an impact on their behaviour so that (marine) mammals and other animal and plant species are better protected in their natural environment. This is how the “beach rover adventures” idea originated. This summer you may all of a sudden find Ad on the beaches of Voorne and the Maasvlakte with a sort of pop-up museum. In the trailer behind the Land Rover you can discover what there is to see around the tide line. As soon as we drive onto the beach, people come to us, Ad says. People have no idea how many seals, porpoises, dolphins, sharks, rays, migratory
birds and birds of prey can be found in the area. And that is the goal; increase the experience on the beach, make people more aware, and monitor and preserve the tide line. You have the First and Second Battle of Rockanje, we are happy to add a Third Battle to all the passionate volunteers “deepening their understanding of the tide line”. The new “beach rover adventures” for on-site education has received a boost from the Landschapstafel Voorne-Putten, which grants subsidies for sustainable projects that give a quality boost to the region. With the “beach rover adventures” you literally bring education on location, often it is on the beach, but also to the city or in class.
Seals On the way back we have some time to view the seals on the Westplaat with binoculars. And there they lie, with their bulging bellies enjoying the sun, that shows itself occasionally. They look so sweet, but Ad also wants to make it clear to people that
