Wallonia Beer Route www.atasteofthegoodlife.co.uk www.walloniatastethedifference.com

WALLONIA BEER ROUTE The main varieties of Wallonia’s beers: Belgium is a land with a brewing tradition. This is historically ingrained in the culture for several centuries and is an integral part of the way of life in our regions. Its reputation goes beyond our borders. Beer culture was, moreover, listed in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016. Wallonia is a region of excellence regarding beer production. The diversity and variety of flavours are their main features. There are more than 500 different beers and for all tastes: lager, brown, amber, fruity, spicy, stout, Saison or season beers, and not forgetting the famous trappist beers.

Along this Wallonia Beer Route, you’ll meet brewers and discover their know-how and passion that drives them. 65 breweries or microbreweries are highlighted. They have in common the fact that they all brew onsite and offer tours. Most breweries have a shop where you can purchase beers you’ll taste with pleasure and in moderation when you return home, with your family or amongst friends. So, don’t wait any longer and head off on the Wallonia Beer Route!

White beer

is a lager to which a good proportion of wheat has been added. This cereal gives it a white and milky appearance. The turbidity is due to the beer being unfiltered. The beer has hints of baked bread as well as fresh citrus fruits like lemon.

Lager is a beer brewed from clear malts; it can be more or less strong depending on the quantity of raw materials used. It is often golden yellow in colour and develops flavours of citrus fruit, white flowers or yeast. Brown beer is a beer where the brewer has used roasted malts with sometimes the addition of caramel. This gives it a dark colour and it develops flavours of cocoa or chocolate, red fruit as well as spices.

Amber beer is between a lager and brown beer; the use of roasted malts is very light. It is amber-orange in colour and can develop caramel flavours while keeping several floral and fruity hints. Stout beer

is a brown beer which contains a large amount of roasted malts. It is black in colour and has roasted coffee and dark chocolate flavours.

Fruity beers are lagers/stouts/amber or white beers to which the brewer adds either fruit or fruit flavours so the product soaks up the flavours. They are often sweetened to adapt to consumers’ tastes.

Season beer is a lager beer, light and rather hoppy. Historically, this beer was brewed during the winter months so that it would be drank by seasonal workers in summer. Spicy beers have a high alcohol content and a large amount of spices. It can be blonde, amber or brown. For example, Christmas beer destined to be drank during the winter months. Wallonia’s trappist beers, with their distinct flavour, are still made in the traditional way in the heart of the Cistercian abbeys under the control of the Trappist community. Their taste varies depending on the brand. Only twelve trappist beers exist in the world including three brewed in Wallonia: Chimay, Orval and Rochefort. Although the breweries of these abbeys are not open to visitors, Orval Abbey and the Chimay Experience offer educational exhibits as well as tastings on-site. Rochefort trappist beer can be enjoyed in the town’s establishments, near the Abbey.
