Today’s military optical requirements go way beyond rifle scopes and binoculars. Optics in surveillance and directed energy systems provide competitive advantage on the battlefield for the American Warfighter. Typically the lead element in an optical system, a dome is often exposed to the wind and rain erosion. Accordingly, domes made from hard ceramic materials are preferred due to their ability to withstand any environment.

Process

Optimax performed innovative research under SBIR #N07-182 for hard ceramic domes and non-traditional shapes that demand creative optical fabrication techniques to produce optical domes cost effectively. This new manufacturing capability is available for full rate production.

Benefits to Applications

The benefits of using hard polycrystalline materials is they are 5 – 10x harder than glass and provide good transmission day, night and all weather conditions and environments giving American Warfighters field advantage. This tangent ogive dome was developed to reduce drag during supersonic flight and provide a competitive advantage on the battlefield for the American Warfighter.

Process

Optimax performed innovative research under SBIR #N112-144 where we leveraged our patented VIBE process, to produce rapid cost-effective manufacturing of hard ceramic aerodynamic missile domes.

Process

Optimax performed innovative research under SBIR #N102-165 that combines novel grinding, polishing, and finishing methods to produce precisely figured windows cost effectively.

Benefits to Applications

Optics that conform to the platform’s design will provide significant mission advantages.
