A difficult year draws to a close. We hope all of you are safe and well.
Although international travel was almost impossible for nearly two years, we were lucky enough to acquire a few extraordinary attractive objects of Southeast Asian, especially Burmese arts and crafts from old private collections as well as from the art markets here in Europe.
With around 100 selected gems, we are pleased to offer a wide range of Asian arts and antiques including religious works of art from Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, betel chewing paraphernalia from Indonesia, the Philippines and India, metalwork from Nepal and India as well as silver jewellery from the Golden Triangle, textiles and lacquerware from Burma, and with around 50 pieces – last but not least –some of the most rare and attractive Burmese weights we’ve ever found.
At this point we would like to draw your attention to our latest publication about the animal-shaped weights of Burma: Shan Beauties – Bird-shaped Weights of the Shan Principalities of Burma, published in Arts of Asia, Summer Issue 2021 (please see the back cover of this catalogue). Our very special thanks are due to Robin Markbreiter, publisher and editor of Arts of Asia, who encouraged us to continue our first article from 2013 with the present paper.

1 Seated Buddha in the Pārileyyaka Forest, lacquered and gilded bronze, Rattanakosin (Thailand), early 19th century
A beautiful and rare larger representation of The Buddha in Pārileyyaka Forest. The Buddha, dressed in finely decorated robes, is seated on a rock with hands in his lap, right palm facing upwards. An elephant and a monkey kneel before the Buddha, with their offerings of water and a honeycomb. The base is embellished by foliage with detailed crafted leaves.
Delicate and detailed crafted sculpture representing one of the eight great events of The Buddha’s earthly life.

2 Seated Buddha, bronze, traces of gilding, northern Thailand / Laos, 17th / 18th century
The superbly cast statue depicting Buddha Shakyamuni as a monk seated in the dhyana mudra of meditation with both hands in his lap. Impressing face with downcast eyes and high curved eyebrows. Hands with long fingers and thumbs with finger nails. Inscription engraved on the front of the base condition: Fine condition, traces of gilding, old natural patina.

3 A seated Buddha, gilt and black-lacquered bronze, Chiang Saen style, Thailand, 19th century
Seated in full lotus position (the soles of the feet upturned), with his right hand in bhumisparsha mudra, the left resting on his lap. The Chiang Saen or Lan Na style Buddha images were influenced by the Khmer artists, by Sukhothai and India. The usnisha is topped with a lotus bud.

The Buddha is seated in half lotus position on a waisted lotus-vine pedestal, the right hand in abhaya mudra.
The flaming siraspata, typical for Sri Lankan Buddha images, emerges from the head. Wheels incised on the right foot. The robe is decorated with wavy lines.

5 A fine bronze figure of a standing Shiva, Khmer, Cambodia, 12th to 13th century
Standing on a small plinth, both hands, finely crafted, held forward, formerly with attributes, now missing. The deity is wearing a sampot with a fishtail-shaped panel in front. The figurine is embellished with jewellery, bracelets and anklets The remnants of a base suggests that the figure was possibly part of a group presentation of deities. On a wooden plinth (not mounted)

7 A fine antique Paktong Opium pipe, Qing dynasty, China, 19th century
A rare complete opium pipe from the famous French collection of Christian Fouanon. The container is made of three-coloured metal and red copper with rich swastika design. A fine chain connects the cover with the accessories. Inscription in Chinese characters under the lid of the container.

8 Ceremonial Dung Chen (Long Trumpet), Tibet, Qing dynasty (China), probably 19th century or earlier
This colourful trumpet was probably made in the 19th century in the style of the 17th century (Ming dynasty) long trumpets (dung-chen or rag-dung). The Ming dynasty trumpets can reach a length of 10 meters. Our short miniature version is made of copper, cloisonné, and brass and was probably presented to official guests as a gift. Without stand.

These two antique lime container, made of bronze, appear in superb condition with some wear, minor dents, and fine natural patina. It is said that these pots were already made since the Khmer culture and thus can be dated back until the 12th century. Stupa-shaped lids. Rich remnants of lime, light reddish.

27 Rare solid silver dragon bracelet, Hmong (Laos), 19th century or earlier
Shaman dragon head bracelets were worn by Lahu, Akha and Lisu men of the Golden Triangle. This heavy antique bracelet is made of solid, high grade silver and shows two dragon heads with a ball in the mouth and a curling mane.
Surprisingly there are smiling faces on the forehead of both dragons. A rare collectible object.

This original vintage shoulder bag was used by Akha women of the Golden Triangle. 33 Embroidered back section of an Akha woman’s jacket, Golden Triangle (Thailand / Burma), early 20th century
This artefact of an Akha woman’s jacket is decorated with superb appliqué patterns. A beautiful antique example of the traditional clothes of the Hill tribes from the Golden Triangle. An example from the below mentioned reference book (page 212) is shown opposite.

Sazigyo binding ribbon, Burma, early to mid-19th century
A very fine red and indigo blue sazigyo in very good condition with a thick cord, the typical loop of an old sazigyo, large letters and a restrained decoration to both ends and the edges of the ribbon.

Apart from a few vertical lines on both ends this very long old sazigyo contains only very precise woven text in the style of the old sazigyos with large letters, no gaps between and no punctuation marks. This sazigyo is in astonishing good condition with good colours and contrast. In the late 19th century the weavers started to add more or less simple ornaments (but rich in their variants) on plain parts before and after the text. Risers and fallers in form of a Christmas tree were introduced as part of the letters. This is a beautiful example with the first pattern, resembling jewellery and a kyizi (flat bell) as well, also in rare good condition.

With clear good colours and contrast as well as intact cord and loop, the ribbon is in rare excellent condition.
A multicolour (green, red, pink) sazigyo. Without much decoration the weaver focused onto the precise beautiful script with fallers and risers. At the beginning with a perfect loop the first word "zeyatu" (success) is framed between flowers or “gems”. After the main text, the end is decorated with a pair of bells, a flat bell (kyizi) and a round bell.

38 Sazigyo binding ribbon, Burma, early 20th century
A richly decorated sazigyo in superb condition. The verse count was important to the weaver and was – as here right before the cord with 90 – recorded to the tape. The sazigyo starts with “gems” ornaments, followed by two kinnara, a beautiful chinthe, a flying pyinsarupa and a parrot right before the “zayatu” as well as at the end of the text. Then again a Chinthe, flat bell and round bell, earth goddess Waythondaye, a dagundaing, a tree of plenty and finally two pairs of kinnara again

With clear good colours and contrast, the ribbons are in good condition. Beautiful red-yellow sazigyos, quite short but wide. Most likely originally produced as a pair. This Buddhist manuscript consists 15 thin lacquered and gilded palm leaf folios with two wooden covers. Four lines of inked script on gold ground with narrow punctuation symbols in red ink and fine floral decoration. Birds in circles on both covers and flowers in framed circles resemble mandalas.

Thai government officials or senior monks used seals to mark official documents or sacred texts. This seal, finely carved from a single piece of ivory, is in the shape of a stupa. The base still bears red seal ink, showing Khmer script in a frame set on a double lotus pedestal. Most likely a monastery seal.

A much sought after “Pumpkin” bird weight with excellent patina. Most likely the tip of the tail is broken. Apart from this, the weight is in outstanding condition especially considering the age. Both bird marks are complete and well visible as well as the inscription on both sides in the so-called fakham script.

58 Lion weight with dragon handle in the style of Chinthe 2B, Arakan (Rakhine), Burma, 19th century or earlier
This is a unique treasure in the style of a Chinthe 2B with a dragon handle, very similar to the handle of a standing silver cup from Canton, displayed in the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts (see the cover of the Summer 2021 issue of Arts of Asia). The lion stands on a hexagonal base. A verification mark is not clear recognizable, even if the missing 3rd horizontal line on the base front right left space for a mark. It’s a rarity with old wear and rich patina, while the extremities, where worn, show the warm bronze colour (eyes, mouth, tongue)

59 Lion weight with handle in the style of Chinthe 2B, Arakan (Rakhine), Burma, 19th century or earlier
Here we have another unique lion weight from Arakan with a remarkable elaborated handletail-combination. The lion, standing on an elongated octagonal base, looks proudly upwards. In contrast to the strong body and heavy base the weight has a small head, short beard and two short mane rows. The impressively elaborated, large curved tail is the most striking feature of our Arakan weight.
A verification mark is not clear visible, even if there are a few signs/dots that could be interpreted as traces of a mark

A rare Hintha 1B weight with circular base and remarkable rich dark patina. The weight is worn with encrustations above the right wing and a part of the back. Decoration lines on the tail are barely visible. The curved decoration line that outlined the wings is still intact on the left but partly below encrustations right. The eyes are already worn. There is a 1.5 cm vertical cut on the back of the base.

This special Karaweik, most-likely a weight from the Mon state of Burma, shows unusual features. The handle is a flat band with a few discreet decoration elements, the head crest has only one tuft bent backwards. The eyes decorated with a special “edging”. The weight is made of a reddish golden copper bronze. Where the almost black patina is worn, the warm golden bronze colour appears. A remarkable collector’s piece in very good condition with old wear.

Here we offer a very well elaborated, tall Hintha weight with a rare polygonal, heavy base. The weight is in very good condition with rich traces of black lacquer coating. A polygonal (twelve-sided) base is unusual for Burmese weights. Thus our Hintha is probably a weight from the Shan states.
The weight mass with 1’696 grams is slightly above the standard (16,3 grams per tical) Pronounced handle decoration, typical protruding eyes, double wings (please see the picture opposite) and beautiful natural patina.
Where the extremities are worn, the golden bronze colour emerges, also at the bottom of the base. An interesting, collectible weight.

Two old “Pumpkin” weights in fine condition considering the age of more than 400 years. The weight right has been readjusted with a small piece of lead, added between tail and neck. The weight left has a very fine and detailed elaborated tail, what is typical for the very old Lan Na weights that Sylvia Fraser-Lu called “Karaweik”.

Two rare Hintha weights, Burma and old Shan / Lan Na, 17th century or earlier
Our Hintha 1B (left) is a fine example of this standard form with rich remnants of black coating and superb bronze patina. The double line on the wings and lines on the tail are still partly visible. Please note that the weight mass is significantly lower than the standard.
The Hintha weight right, possibly from Lan Na, shows very similar features. One also find the vertical double lines on the wings, the mouth appendage, tail shape and neck feathers. But anyway, the design is yet different as well as the weight mass.

These two old sleeping ducks from the Mon state of Burma are a very rare find. Especially the 20 tical weight (left) is worn with weathering from use over centuries. But a few decorative elements are still (well) visible, as the eyes, mouth appendage, dotted lines on tail and neck. Verification mark is the circular depression at the front of the base.
The 10 tical weight (right) is in fine worn condition considering age and use. The vertical double lines on the wings, the decoration lines on the tail and the base are still partly visible. Also here we find traces of black coating.

Sleeping ducks from the Mon state with a Gha Gyi mark are rare to find. Here we offer two different specimen. On the left we have a standing duck on an octagonal base in the form of Hintha 2C, but still according to the old standard of 15 grams per tical and with the Gha Gyi mark front right. Right we have a sleeping duck, sitting on an octagonal base with Gha Gyi mark (barely visible) and with the notable head crest with two tufts.

Like tattooed this Karaweik has been embellished with fine detailed pattern to depict the feathers. This weight with big elongated eyes, an archaic head with a chicken-like beak, three rows of neck feathers and the bird mark was actually worn from use and got a smooth surface. But then, most likely for a special, superstitious reason, the owner decided to ornate the bird. There are also traces of a lead adjustment, but the lead has been removed already, sometimes done by collectors to “clean” the weight from “dirt”.

Revocation consequences
In the event of a valid revocation, the performance delivered by either party is to be returned and the proceeds of any utilization (e.g. interest) submitted.
If you cannot submit / return the received performance and benefits (e.g. utilization benefits) to us, or submit / return them only partially or in a deteriorated condition, you need to compensate us to the required extent. You must pay compensation for degraded items only insofar as the deterioration is due to handling of the items beyond testing of properties and functionality. Testing of properties and functionality is to be understood as testing and evaluation of the respective goods as is possible and common in retail shops, for instance.
Items which can be dispatched in packages are to be returned at our expense and risk.
Items which cannot be dispatched in packages will be fetched from your premises.
Payment obligations must be fulfilled within 30 days.
The time limit becomes effective on dispatch of your revocation notice or the item for you, and on its receipt for us.

§ 1 Geltungsbereich & Abwehrklausel
(1) Für die über die Galerie Michael Herrfurth Asiatische Kunst (Online-Galerie unter www.opiumgewichte.com) begründeten Rechtsbeziehungen zwischen dem Betreiber (nachfolgend „Anbieter“) und seinen Kunden gelten ausschließlich die folgenden Allgemeinen Geschäftsbedingungen in der jeweiligen Fassung zum Zeitpunkt der Bestellung.
(2) Abweichende Allgemeine Geschäftsbedingungen des Kunden werden zurückgewiesen.
§ 2 Zustandekommen des Vertrages
(1) Die Präsentation der Waren in der OnlineGalerie stellt kein bindendes Angebot des Anbieters auf Abschluss eines Kaufvertrages dar. Der Kunde wird hierdurch lediglich aufgefordert, durch eine Bestellung ein Angebot abzugeben.
(2) Durch das Absenden der Bestellung per Email gibt der Kunde ein verbindliches Angebot gerichtet auf den Abschluss eines Kaufvertrages über die durch ihn in der Email genannten Waren ab. Mit dem Absenden der Bestellung erkennt der Kunde auch diese Geschäftsbedingungen als für das Rechtsverhältnis mit dem Anbieter allein maßgeblich an.
(3) Der Anbieter bestätigt den Eingang der Bestellung des Kunden durch Versendung einer Bestätigungs-E-Mail. Diese Bestellbestätigung stellt noch nicht die Annahme des Vertragsangebotes durch den Anbieter dar. Sie dient lediglich der Information des Kunden, dass die Bestellung beim Anbieter eingegangen ist. Die Erklärung der Annahme des Vertragsangebotes erfolgt durch die Auslieferung der Ware oder eine ausdrückliche Annahmeerklärung.
§ 3 Leistungsbeschreibung
(1) Die Beschaffenheiten der angebotenen Gegenstände werden im Einzelnen durch die Beschreibung auf der Website bzw. in einem per Download oder Email zur Verfügung gestellten Katalog im pdf-Format links oder rechts neben, unter oder über der Abbildung verbindlich und abschließend dargestellt. Sonstige öffentliche Äußerungen des Anbieters, dessen Gehilfen oder Dritter enthalten keine ergänzende oder ändernde Leistungsbeschreibung.
(2) Den Parteien ist bewusst, dass es bei der Übertragung und Anzeige der Bilddateien möglicherweise zu Abweichungen zwischen dem Original und der Darstellung auf dem Monitor z.B. hinsichtlich der Farbtöne kommen kann. Eine farbgetreue Wiedergabe der zugrunde liegenden Originale ist nicht geschuldet. Geringfügige Abweichungen zwischen der Darstellung des Bildes auf den Monitor und dem Original sind vertragsgemäß. Vertraglich geschuldet wird jedoch die in der Produktbeschreibung enthaltenen Eigenschaften (z.B. Material, Alter, Herkunft) auf der Website bzw. im Katalog zum Zeitpunkt der Bestellung.
§ 4 Preise
(1) Alle Preise verstehen sich in Euro.
(2) Maßgeblich sind ausschließlich die auf Anfrage dem Kunden per Email mitgeteilten Preise. Die in der Internetpräsentation bzw. im pdf-Katalog im Übrigen enthaltenen Angaben, insbesondere Preise, enthalten kein verbindliches Angebot und sind freibleibend. Irrtümer auf voran geschalteten Website oder abweichende Preisangaben auf Websites Dritter haben keine Verbindlichkeit im Verhältnis der Vertragsparteien.
(3) Alle angegebenen Preise verstehen sich in Euro zzgl. der jeweils geltenden gesetzlichen Mehrwertsteuer. Diese wird in der Rechnung separat ausgewiesen.
(4) Die Kosten für Lieferung und Verpackung trägt der Kunde. Die Art der Lieferung wählt der Kunde. Äußert sich der Kunde nicht zur Art der Lieferung, wählt der Anbieter die für ihn günstigste Versandvariante.
(5) Bei Lieferungen in Länder außerhalb der Europäischen Union können zusätzliche Kosten für anfallende weitere Steuern und Zölle entstehen, auf die der Anbieter keinen Einfluss hat. Diese Kosten werden in vollem Umfang vom Kunden getragen.
§ 5 Zahlung
(1) Der Kunde wählt bei Abgabe seiner Bestellung unter mehreren durch den Anbieter vorgegebenen Zahlungsweisen die gewünschte aus. Zahlungen gelten ungeachtet der gewählten Zahlungsweise erst dann als geleistet, wenn der Anbieter uneingeschränkt über den Betrag verfügen kann.
(2) Der Kaufpreis ist sofort ohne Abzug fällig.
(3) Der Kunde ist vorleistungspflichtig.
(4) Der Kunde kommt ohne weitere Erklärung seitens des Anbieters 14 Tage nach Lieferung der Ware in Verzug, soweit er nicht bezahlt hat. Die Verzugsfolgen richten sich nach den gesetzlichen Bestimmungen.
§ 6 Vorbehalt bei Nichtverfügbarkeit
Der Anbieter sichert nicht zu, dass die Website bzw. der pdf-Katalog stets aktuell und die dargestellte Ware noch verfügbar ist.
§ 7 Eigentumsvorbehalt
Die gelieferte Ware verbleibt bis zur vollständigen Bezahlung im Eigentum des Anbieters.
§ 8 Fälligkeit
Die Zahlung des Kaufpreises ist mit Vertragsschluss fällig.
§ 9 Gewährleistung
(1) Die Gewährleistungsrechte des Kunden richten sich nach den allgemeinen gesetzlichen Vorschriften, soweit nachfolgend nichts anderes bestimmt ist. Für Schadensersatzansprüche des Kunden gegenüber dem Anbieter gilt die Regelung in § 6 dieser AGB.
(2) Die Verjährungsfrist für Gewährleistungsansprüche des Kunden beträgt bei Verbrauchern bei neu hergestellten Sachen 2 Jahre, bei gebrauchten Sachen 1 Jahr. Gegenüber Unternehmern beträgt die Verjährungsfrist bei neu hergestellten Sachen und bei gebrauchten Sachen 1 Jahr. Die vorstehende Verkürzung der Verjährungsfristen gilt nicht für Schadensersatzansprüche des Kunden aufgrund einer Verletzung des Lebens, des Körpers, der Gesundheit sowie für Schadensersatzansprüche aufgrund einer Verletzung wesentlicher Vertragspflichten. liche Vertragspflichten sind solche, deren Erfüllung zur Erreichung des Ziels des Vertrags notwendig ist, z.B. hat der Anbieter dem Kunden die Sache frei von Sach- und Rechtsmängeln zu übergeben und das Eigentum an ihr zu verschaffen. Die vorstehende Verkürzung der Verjährungsfristen gilt ebenfalls nicht für Schadensersatzansprüche, die auf einer vorsätzlichen oder grob fahrlässigen Pflichtverletzung des Anbieters, seiner gesetzlichen Vertreter oder Erfüllungsgehilfen beruhen. Gegenüber Unternehmern ebenfalls ausgenommen von der Verkürzung der Verjährungsfristen ist der Rückgriffsanspruch nach § 478 BGB.
(3) Eine Garantie wird von dem Anbieter nicht erklärt.
§ 10 Haftungsausschluss
(1) Schadensersatzansprüche des Kunden sind ausgeschlossen, soweit nachfolgend nichts anderes bestimmt ist. Der vorstehende Haftungsausschluss gilt auch zugunsten der gesetzlichen Vertreter und Erfüllungsgehilfen des Anbieters, sofern der Kunde Ansprüche gegen diese geltend macht.
(2) Von dem unter Ziffer 1 bestimmten Haftungsausschluss ausgenommen sind Schadensersatzansprüche aufgrund einer Verletzung des Lebens, des Körpers, der Gesundheit und Schadensersatzansprüche aus der Verletzung wesentlicher Vertragspflichten. Wesentliche Vertragspflichten sind solche, deren Erfüllung zur Erreichung des Ziels des Vertrags notwendig ist, z.B. hat der Anbieter dem Kunden die Sache frei von Sach- und Rechtsmängeln zu übergeben und das Eigentum an ihr zu verschaffen. Von dem Haftungsausschluss ebenfalls ausgenommen ist die Haftung für Schäden, die auf einer vorsätzlichen oder grob fahrlässigen Pflichtverletzung des Anbieters, seiner gesetzlichen Vertreter oder Erfüllungsgehilfen beruhen.
(3) Vorschriften des Produkthaftungsgesetzes (ProdHaftG) bleiben unberührt.
§ 11 Abtretungs- und Verpfändungsverbot
Die Abtretung oder Verpfändung von dem Kunden gegenüber dem Anbieter zustehenden Ansprüchen oder Rechten ist ohne Zustimmung des Anbieters ausgeschlossen, sofern der Kunde nicht ein berechtigtes Interesse an der Abtretung oder Verpfändung nachweist.
§ 12
Aufrechnung
Ein Aufrechnungsrecht des Kunden besteht nur, wenn seine zur Aufrechnung gestellte Forderung rechtskräftig festgestellt wurde oder unbestritten ist.
§ 13
Rechtswahl & Gerichtsstand
(1) Auf die vertraglichen Beziehungen zwischen dem Anbieter und dem Kunden findet das Recht der Bundesrepublik Deutschland Anwendung. Von dieser Rechtswahl ausgenommen sind die zwingenden Verbraucherschutzvorschriften des Landes, in dem der Kunde seinen gewöhnlichen Aufenthalt hat. Die Anwendung des UN-Kaufrechts ist ausgeschlossen.
(2) Gerichtsstand für alle Streitigkeiten aus dem Vertragsverhältnis zwischen dem Kunden und dem Anbieter ist der Sitz des Anbieters,
sofern es sich bei dem Kunden um einen Kaufmann, eine juristische Person des öffentlichen Rechts oder ein öffentlich-rechtliches Sondervermögen handelt.
§ 14 Salvatorische Klausel
Sollte eine Bestimmung dieser Allgemeinen Geschäftsbedingungen unwirksam sein, wird davon die Wirksamkeit der übrigen Bestimmungen nicht berührt.
