Foreword The Christmas Special 2019
Dear friends and collectors,
As usual also this year our Christmas Special is not only focusing on the Burmese weights, but offers a wide range of arts and antiques from Southeast Asia, especially from Myanmar.
Rather by coincidence than an aimed effort this catalogue contains 100 positions with 150 items, of course also with a special section for the weights of the Burmese empires as well as from Laos. Again we luckily found a few extraordinary interesting pieces.
In the first part of the catalogue we offer a few impressive images of The Buddha, made of bronze or wood, originated from Burma and Laos.
Two beautiful lacquer bowls, almost a set and decorated finely in each case, are made by the Shan from Inle Lake.
In the metal section we compiled betel knives, tattoo tools, bells and finally some superb silver jewellery from the Golden Triangle, Laos and southern China.
Examples from our Pyu bead collection will attract the collector’s eyes, hopefully.
In the last part of the catalogue objects of the manuscript culture will be on display, as sazigyo binding tapes, kammavaca manuscripts, a stunning paysar manuscript, a samut koi manuscript from Thailand and finally from an old German collection a group of very rare ivory title indicator for precious Burmese and Thai manuscripts.

1 A large Buddha, lacquered wood, Ava period (Burma), 17th - 18th century
The Buddha is seated on a high, multi-tiered throne in padmasana, depicting the earth touching gesture (bhumisparsa mudra). The wood with several age cracks. The face with heavy-lidded downcast eyes and the smile, which can be seen quite often at Shan Buddha statues, is typical for Buddha images of the 2nd and 3rd Ava period. It seems that the statue has been covered later a second time with brown lacquer. The original decoration is shining through at the front of the base. Old repairs and some losses.
Sacred material have been placed in a cavity hollowed out at the back of the throne. As a rarity one find the remains of a carved wooden vessel inside the hollow compartment. Lid missing.

2 Seated Buddha, gilded bronze, Mandalay era (Burma), ca. 1860 - 1900
This impressive Buddha image, cast in bronze or copper alloy, is seated in padmasana on a plain throne. The right hand in bhumisparsa mudra, does not touch the ground, what is typical for Mandalay style as well as the slightly smiling mouth. Interestingly the inlayed eyes look directly to the viewer. The face has been embellished with an inlaid mirror and red glass band at the hair line.

3 Seated Buddha, wood, Amarapura period (Shan), 18th / 19th century
The Buddha is seated on a multi-tiered throne in padmasana, depicting the earth touching gesture (bhumisparsa mudra). His face with serene expression, downcast eyes and a beautiful smile.
Sacred material have been placed in a cavity hollowed out at the back of the throne. Lid missing.
The wooden statue is covered with black lacquer and 24 ct. gilded.
The Donator’s inscription in the reserve in front of the base (please see photo above) can be read as follows: Donator (Good deed “kgmu” of) Ma Mi Nge.

6 Buddha, Laos, early era, probably first period
The early Buddha images elaborated in thick and very heavy bronze. The Buddha seated on a high plain pedestal. The high, elongated head is typical for Buddha images of the 1st period of the early era. As Somkiart Lopetcharat mentioned, “The back hairline, which extends to the nape of the neck, is an identifying feature of work prior to the period in which Lao art developed a unique identity”.

A small heavy Buddha image with rich natural bronze and copper-red patina where polished With encrustations and remnants of black lacquer. Two damages to the upper bronze layer near the lower rim, base front and base left. Apart from this, the small statue is well and detailed elaborated.

8 Buddha Shakyamuni, Teakwood, central or southern Laos, 19th century
Typical folk art Buddha image from Laos, carved from a single piece of Teak wood. Since these images were placed in caves or outside under a sacred tree (Bo), they show extensive wear, giving them a special charm. Despite of some age-related cracks to the wood and a few losses, this tall, slender Buddha image is in good condition.

An impressive example of folk art Buddha images from Laos, carved from a single piece of Teak wood. Smooth surface with beautiful old patina. Good condition with small age-related cracks, soiled with some encrustations on the left side of the body, probably from dripping water in a cave. Since the base is uneven, the statue need a slight support to stand in upright position.

This small wooden Buddha image shows extensive weathering, giving the statue a special charm. Obviously the statue has been placed somewhere outside, exposed to the elements for many decades.

12 Elephant statue, Teakwood, Thailand, 19th century
A small but masterfully executed wood carving of an old Asian elephant. Both tusks lost, probably originally made of ivory The strong weathering and the wood grain give the impression of a natural elephant image.

13 Lacquerware offering bowl, dated 1296 (1934), Inle Lake, Shan States (Burma)
The bowl, according to the inscription not an item for daily use, but for religious purposes, is covered with the more rare orange lacquer
Around the waist of the stem one find narrow horizontal decorative bands of yellow bamboo and a band of simulated little wooden pillars, Shan bowls and offering vessels are typically decorated with
The bottom of the offering bowl inscribed with the donator’s name and the year of donation (Bo Pwint, 1296 ME).
There are some fine tears and loss of lacquer (especially inside the bowl), old wear and traces of use as expected. The bowl is in good overall condition.

14 Lacquerware bowl, Inle Lake, Shan States (Burma), early 20th century
The bowl is covered with the more rare orange lacquer. Around the waist of the stem one find the band of simulated little wooden pillars, Shan bowls and offering vessels are typically decorated with narrow horizontal hoops or bands of notched yellow bamboo.
There are some fine tears to the lacquer, old wear and traces of use. The bowl is in fine overall condition, especially considering the age of about 100 years.

16 Folding knife for cutting Areca nut (Betel nut), Lanna, 19th century or earlier
A rare Betel folding knife with wooden handle, two finials in brass and a heavy iron blade. The blade is embellished with an engraving of Nang Kwak (divinity of Thai folklore and a version of Lakshmi) on lotus thrown and Buddhist mantras on the blade. The back of the blade in illegible script
Na Mo Put Ta Ya represent the five holy Buddhas (previous, present and future Buddhas) and is the most holy katha (mantra used in Buddhist chanting) in Theravada Buddhism.
Na Ma Pa Ta (on the side with Nang Kwak) are the four natural elements (Water, Earth, Fire and Wind (air).
Both can be find inscribed in Buddhist amulets and sacred tattoos or talismanic yantra shirts.
The knife is in good condition considering age and use. The wooden hilt shows some longitudinal cracks. The brass tube with the joint is slightly damaged from overstretching. Very special thanks to an experienced collector, who searched and found the translation!

From an old collection we acquired this rare, heavy foldable tattoo needle in perfect condition and excellent quality with only minor wear. The tube showing in the image right is just used to protect the tip of the needle and doesn’t belong to a tattoo set. Remnants of ink between the blades.

25 Rare temple bell with two loops, Burma, late 19th century or earlier
Similar to the cow bells this temple bell has two loops. Since both loops show extensive wear, the bell must has been in use over a quite long period. The small but heavy bell has a nice clear sound and a beautiful silvery patina. There are two small holes on the upper rim for unclear reasons (wear or drilled). The clapper might be original.

A pair of hollow silver bracelets, Golden Triangle / Laos, late 19th / early 20th century
An original pair of these hollow silver bracelets is hard to find, both in respect to the overwhelming decoration and excellent condition as well as to the size. Compared to the reference these bracelets can be find more slender and mostly as single pieces only. As usual a few silver “pebbles” rattle inside the bracelet, having religious significance. Collector’s recommendation!

30 A pair of vintage solid silver bracelets, late 19th / early 20th century
These expandable solid silver bracelets were mainly worn by Wa/Lawa people. Both bracelets show lovely old wear, giving them a smooth surface and special charm. This pair comes from a well-known London collection, acquired in the late 1970s in Laos.

This pair of solid silver dragon head bracelets has been enameled to both ends in blue and yellow, which partly results in green, most likely to be used in Shaman rituals. Both bracelet show some wear, but the decoration faded only partly and is still well visible.

39 Very large, heavy apron silver counter weight, Miao/Dong, Guizhou province, Autonomous Region Qiandongnan, Congjiang District, China, 20th century
There are a few standard forms of this counterweight, the most common of which is the Sshape. Knobbed forms are rarer, and could be used independently or in conjunction with the S-weight by wrapping one of the S-shaped weight’s curves around the perpendicular section connecting the knob and the W-shaped part of the knobbed weight. Either fiber or silver chains with silver coins used as buttons tie around the counterweight’s loops and connect to fabric ties on the back of aprons. Depending on the style, counterweights weigh between ½ to 1 ½ pounds with knobbed counterweights being the heaviest. [1]

The silver case is in superb condition with only minor traces of use, while the presentation box shows some wear to the edges. The design with the two guardian lions in the center, flame ornaments and four figurines in each corner is excellent elaborated. The interior band is original and marked with Hill Shenstone. These six highly agatized pumtek beads (fossilized wood) have a beautiful dark colour, high black/white contrast and good clear line decoration. All six beads are in good condition with some wear at the holes. They were part of a Chin bead necklace with around 100 pumtek beads. 52 Toe 2, 1 viss, late 17th century
This rare old lion weight bears a precise square depression as the first verification mark in front of the base. As a second mark there is a 6-rayed star on the base front left. Receiving the second mark the weight was most likely readjusted with lead between body and base to the higher standard. The former collector removed the lead, probably as dirt, which leaves a bluish green discolouration. The face of the Toe is well elaborated. The base has a remarkable form with rounded edges. This more rare version of Toe 2 standard form has the saddle-shaped decoration on the back which tapers towards the upper extension of the tail.

Here we offer a very rare Hintha weight from an old French collection. The remarkable shape with compressed body and big, but elongated eyes is unusual but seems to be inspired by Hintha 3A2. Remnants of black coating on the wings, chest and back. Base with double line decoration and horizontal notches on the upper rim As an attractive feature, additional wing feathers appear behind the main wing.

57 Hintha bird weight on pumpkin base, prior to 1600
Our 10 tical pumpkin weight is in superb condition with old wear, smooth surface and fine natural patina. The bird bears a beautiful curled tail and is seated proudly on a flat disk above the famous pumpkin base. The vertical notches on the base are barely visible, the double lines on the wings only with a magnifying glass, but they are there.
It’s an excellent collector’s piece in rare good pre-1600 condition.

58 Hintha bird weight on pumpkin base, prior to 1600
Our 5 tical pumpkin weight is very similar to #57, slightly inclined forward. Layers of black coating can be find on the back of the base and the tail. Even with old wear and traces of use over centuries, the fine relief of vertical notches around the base is still well visible. Also our 5 tical bird bears a beautiful curled tail, on the right side with a small 3 mm cut. Rare to find in this good pre-1600 condition.

59 Hintha 1B as found in the Shan States, circa 1730
Shan / Lan Na bird weights in the shape of the Burmese Hintha 1B standard form, but with the standard of 16,3 grams / tical. The weights show old wear and appear in fine condition, especially considering the age. The two vertical notches on the wings are faded, but, as all the other details too, still well visible. The round bases are decorated with two horizontal lines or with a band of beads between the lines (right). Fine silvery bronze patina.

Today a 20 tical Hintha 1A weight is rare to find in this pristine condition
The archaic bird figurine sits on a circular base, which bears the deep depression as verification mark, which slightly bent up the flat disk on the upper rim of the base
Please note the band of fine dots around back and tail, which is still visible. The vertical double line on both wings can be seen under a magnifying glass. The eyes are almost vanished, while the food can be clearly seen. The lower base edges are smooth rounded from use over the centuries.

This unusual bird weight was found in the Shan States and resembles standard form and decoration of the Shan weights, but is without a verification mark.
Old wear and traces of use suggest, that the weight could be issued in the 19th century, but clearly as an “outlaw”. Anyway, the weight matches the standard of 16,3 grams per tical.

This Hintha 4D bird weight shows some wear which leave a smooth surface to the extremities. All details are still well visible. With strong wide claws the bird has been fixed to the base.
Although we don’t find a verification mark, which suggests that the weight were issued in the late 19th to early 20th century, interestingly we have an owner’s name in Shan script on the bottom of the base, which makes this bird weight an attractive collector’s item.

A Toe 1A weight is always a rare find, especially in good condition. Our lion bears a lotus tail and stands on an octagonal base with rounded edges. Eyes, horns, ears as well as the decoration lines depicting the mane are worn, but still visible. Rich, slightly reddish patina.

Left we have a rare 5 tical Toe 1B weight with smooth greenish patina, old wear as expected, but in good condition for an almost 400 years old weight.
The center piece is a curiosity and should be placed between Toe 2 and Toe 1D. Shape and verification mark meet the standard of T 2, but the tail shows already three spikes . A unique piece in good worn condition!

Fine natural copper bronze patina. Old wear from use over the centuries with rounded edges and a small hole, most likely a casting defect. No verification mark or not visible anymore. Interestingly the weight clearly seems to have a fine top and a worn bottom side.

Probably this is one of the oldest weights we’ve ever had. Surprisingly it’s could be a bear, sitting on a square base with circumferential vertical notches on the upper rim, two horizontal lines and worn rounded edges Ears and eyes are still visible. A square mark in front of the base is still recognizable, even worn. Bronze with fine light copper patina.

87 Sazigyo binding ribbon, Burma, 19th century
Here we have two sazigyo binding tapes with lizard design, some vertical lines and chessboard pattern. Both, the red as well as the blue sazigyo, could be made from the same weaver. Interestingly they differ only 10 cm in length. It’s a beautiful pair in overall good condition, slightly soiled with some wear here and there (please see previous double page).

88 Sazigyo binding ribbon, Burma, dated 1267 (1905) and 1269 (1907)
a) Slightly faded, this sazigyo, dated 1267 (1905), is in excellent condition, inclusive loop and cord. Our multi-colour binding ribbon in yellow, red and green as well as a few undyed decoration elements starts with lion, candelabrum, Hintha bird, padaythabin and the initial invocation “zeyatu”.

Here we have a sazigyo with a perfect final cord. The final fringe follows a short flat end. Even dated as early as 1269 (1907) our multi-coloured sazigyo is in perfect condition. The text sections are numbered from 1 to 7 with the numerals each highlighted between two peacocks. The text starts with the invocation “zeyatu” enclosed between open mouth fishes.

89 Sazigyo binding ribbon, Burma, late 19th / early 20th century (dated 1266)
a) Surprisingly the weaver placed the flat end of the cord in its center. A special, quite rare feature! This multi-colour sazigyo has been dated 1266 (1904) and is richly decorated. Loop and cord are in perfect condition. The decoration starts with ornaments, lions, a hsun ok, again ornaments, candelabrum, fishes etc. The text starts as usual with “zeyatu!” and ends after more detailed decoration with the dagundaing. The verse count was important to the weaver and was - as here with 60 - recorded to the tape. An attractive sazigyo in very good, age-related condition.

This slightly older sazigyo (mid- to late 19th century) made of undyed, red, and yellow (edges) yarn, has been woven without a loop. But after some geometric patterns it’s starts as usual with “zeyatu”, followed by a long text, a candelabrum and finally the woven image of dagundaing.
Apart from minor imperfections to the cord, this Sazigyo is in perfect condition.

90 Sazigyo binding ribbon, Burma, dated 1261 (1899)
Beautiful sazigyo made of undyed and red yarn, dated 1261
The binding tape is lavishly decorated. Please see the fine example of a dagundaing in red and white (compare with Issacs, pp. 198 and 199), what is the last of every sazigyo, before thagyamin, the king of the nats, bells and the year of making. Loop and cord are in excellent condition.
Risers and fallers with special “Christmas tree” decoration. At the beginning of the tape one can read the initial invocation “zeyatu” enclosed between two lion beasts.
Apart from slightly faded colours our 120 years old sazigyo is in rare good condition.

94 Rare old Paysar (Palm-leaf) manuscript, Burma, probably Nyaungyan Restoration (Taungoo), dated
Complete Buddhist palm leaf manuscript enclosed between two wooden boards, with binding tape (sazigyo) and a later fabric wrapper. The palm leaf pointer (gabyidan) is lost. But the title of the paysar has been written to the front board. Most likely the manuscript contains the 2nd part of Garudhamma Sutta, the Vinaya Discipline, in a semi Pali-Myanmar translation and is dated on the first page as shown top right (year and month written in Burmese words).
This manuscript is the oldest paysar we’ve ever had in our collection. It was donated on the full moon day of Tawthalin (late August/September), the full moon day Lord Buddha discoursed the Garudhamma Sutta.
Highly recommended rarity for scientific studies and museum’s collection.

First and last page made from doubled sheets of paper, covered with black lacquer and frame-shaped design.
Beside the text pages the book contains 10 double-pages with two coloured illustrations on each, showing scenes from the legend of Phra Malai. Text in Khmer script.
Interestingly the first and second page contains various donator’s inscriptions (Khun Saengsami from Nanglieng street donated this Phra Malai manuscript to Khun Paipeek. On 3 April 1926 the family donated this manuscript to their parents, Ms. Chum, Ms. Prang and Ms. Miern donated 1 Baht each etc. - Special thanks to friends of the Thai community Essen for translation!)

A beautiful vintage Burmese parasol with silver handle, dyed and hand-painted fabric with flowers and scenes of rural life, main body wood, branch and supporting arms bamboo (Tharaphu). With protective cover (zinc), packed in an inner and outer cotton back. Cover with label in Burmese and English: Aya Kywai's umbrella shop (granddaughter of the famous umbrella maker U Kyauk Lone), Pathein. Even worn, it’s a beautiful rare example of a complete set with parasol and covers from Pathein.

Revocation consequences
In the event of a valid revocation, the performance delivered by either party is to be returned and the proceeds of any utilization (e.g. interest) submitted.
If you cannot submit / return the received performance and benefits (e.g. utilization benefits) to us, or submit / return them only partially or in a deteriorated condition, you need to compensate us to the required extent. You must pay compensation for degraded items only insofar as the deterioration is due to handling of the items beyond testing of properties and functionality.
Testing of properties and functionality is to be understood as testing and evaluation of the respective goods as is possible and common in retail shops, for instance.
Items which can be dispatched in packages are to be returned at our expense and risk.
Items which cannot be dispatched in packages will be fetched from your premises. Payment obligations must be fulfilled within 30 days.
