Partner Report Spring Edition

We’re committed to fighting human trafficking. But we can’t do it without you.

Welcome to

Operation Blessing Firstly may I take this opportunity to introduce myself, my name is Allen Carter, & I have recently taken over from Tracy Kelly in heading up Operation Blessing here within the UK & Ireland. Over the last 4 years, Tracy has done an exceptional job for Operation Blessing UK & I’m sure that you will join with me in wishing Tracy every blessing & success in the new venture for her life. I must say, I am really excited to be involved in this great ministry, because already I can see just how many lives & communities are being changed & restored through the generous donations & gifts that are being sown into this very productive soil, through donors like you. We are living in days where there is no shortage of needs, we only have to turn on the TV, listen to the radio, read the newspapers or check online & we are immediately made aware of situations that are represented in so many Nations around the world. Many are experiencing

lack, heartache, disease, famine, wars & challenging circumstances, but thankfully because of your giving, Operation Blessing UK is able to play a part in bringing hope & compassion, which is at he heart of the message of the gospel - which is Good News. In this issue you read about a UK charity Safe From Slavery, which we have recently partnered with, who are raising awareness & equipping the church to fight & take a stand against Human Trafficking, (Page 4) . Also a heart warming story of how we have helped to provide shoes to children in Peru. (Page 6). We are so grateful to you for partnering with Operation Blessing UK, & as you read through this newsletter you will see how your money is being used, to bring about change one step at a time.

Thank you Allen Carter

God is raising up an army to BREAK the chains of this injustice, see the captives freed, restoring HOPE and bringing HEALING to the broken hearted.

“The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant...” Exodus 2:23-24 (NIV) • There are more slaves today than at any other point in history! • Human trafficking is the fastest growing form of international and organised crime and the second largest illegal trade within the world! • It is estimated that there are more than 22 million people worldwide suffering as modern day slaves! • The average age of those being trafficked is only 12 years old! When reading these statements is there a sense of injustice, which stirs up within? William Wilberforce who was able to abolish slavery in 1833 said:

“You may choose to look the other way but you can never say again that you didn’t know!” Slavery is not a new thing, back in Exodus we have the Israelites groaning in their slavery and God heard their cries & called a man named Moses who thought that because of his previous mistakes God could never use him again. What a presumption to make, because God used Moses to deliver a nation from slavery simply because of his obedience to speak, to act & his total dependency upon God to perform a miracle to see God’s people set free. Today there are millions of people entrapped & ensnared in the lifestyle of Human Trafficking & their cries are being

heard by the heart of God who is looking for a response from His Church, His people.

How will you respond?

Could you pray? Could you be a voice & help take a stand? Could you give financially? At Operation Blessing UK we have partnered with a Christian charity based here in the UK “Safe From Slavery” to help raise awareness, equip the church to fight & take a stand against Human Trafficking. Safe From Slavery has three main aims: Partner: equip the church to fight against modern day slavery, joining with other organisations across the globe to become ONE VOICE to abolish trafficking in the 21st Century. Protect: provide long-term aftercare for survivors of sex trafficking, to include safe accommodation and a rebuilding programme, restoring hope, dignity and the potential of a brighter future. Prevent: raise awareness of trafficking and it’s impact on the victims through advocacy and awareness campaigns, through education projects including the risk of grooming. Safe From Slavery is opening the UK’s first long term aftercare home for survivors of sex slavery. Do you want to leave a lasting legacy & make a stand against modern day slavery?

Will you partner with us with your onetime gift or monthly donation of £10, £25, £50 or more?

Helping Change Live Without warm shoes to protect her feet, little Vivian suffers from frostbite in the extreme cold Three-year-old Vivian always has a bright, warm smile, but lately, that is about the only warm thing she has. High up in the mountains of Peru, little Vivian lives along the shores of lake Titicaca — one of the world’s highest lakes. Here, the winter temperatures drop dangerously low, and children like Vivian living in this impoverished region suffer from the cold and frostbite because they do not have proper shoes to protect their feet. The day Operation Blessing teams arrived at her pre-school with new winter boots from Tom’s Shoes, Vivian was the first in line — excited to try on her new shoes. she was carefully measured and given brand new boots to protect her tiny feet. As Operation Blessing staff began measuring her classmates, Vivian eagerly helped distribute boots to other students so they too could warm their feet. “She was the one that ran to pick shoes from every box to help me out,” said sandra Arbaiza, OB Peru director of operations. “She would run fast to the boxes, take the shoes and run to the other kids telling them ‘Put them on!’ With a smile on her lips. Vivian may be small, but her heart is big. “She is always helping,” her mother said. “She loves to give her time to others.” “In all the activities we do, people are thankful to receive shoes,” Arbaiza added, “but this girl showed that it is better to give than to receive.” Now clad in new boots, Vivian and her classmates will be able to attend classes all winter long without risking frostbitten toes as they walk to school.

es With New Shoes

The Tom’s Shoe distribution was part of Operation Blessing’s holistic programme for young children in the jungle region of Peru. OBI teams visited nearly 200 schools, aiding more than 12,000 children with hygiene training to promote good health — including an interactive drama, colouring books and more to help children ages 3 to 12 learn how to wash their hands properly and understand the importance of wearing shoes. Operation Blessing staff also trained parents and caregivers, as well as teachers, and installed more than 250 hand washing stations in schools that needed them.

“In all the activities we do, people are thankful to receive shoes, but this girl showed that it is better to give than to receive.”

Philippines Update The latest ministry update from our teams on the ground. We want to start off by saying a big THANK YOU to every single person who has donated towards the disaster relief efforts in the Philippines. Operation Blessing has been able to reach over 272,793 Typhoon Yolanda survivors! We have been able to partner with local government units, the Armed Forces and local churches to ensure that the impact of your donations are maximised. At the onset of 2014, Operation Blessing is putting into action the planned rehabilitation phase for the survivors of Typhoon Yolanda. The major components of this phase are housing projects and livelihood programmes for affected communities in Guiuan, Eastern Samar and Leyte. We have started to construct twenty lowcost houses, two school buildings, the community’s barangay hall, day care and health centre. While construction of two low-cost temporary shelters, intended for 200 families (1,200 individuals), has also started in Tacloban, Leyte, in partnership with the Mayor’s office.

Disasters and calamities not only bring destruction to whole communities, but it also brings serious health emergencies and concerns. In the weeks following the devastation of Typhoon Yolanda, Operation Blessing provided immediate healthcare services to communities, which included trauma counselling to adults and children. So far, we have reached more than 18,000 individuals with free medical checkups, wound dressing and minor surgical procedures. These medical missions have also had a spiritual impact on the local communities, with almost 4,000 patients becoming Christians! Superbook has also played an important role in helping children through trauma counselling. Over 10,500 people have attended the screenings, with over 4,000 of them deciding to live for Christ! As time goes on, we will continue to keep you updated with the efforts in the Philippines, and please keep this precious nation in your prayers. During the dry season, impoverished families in Honduras live with unquenchable thirst... In the small village of Nueva Esperanza (or New Hope), Manuel often daydreamed about scoring the winning goal in a football match, but the 13 year old boy never had the chance to try. “We couldn’t play; we couldn’t run or do anything that would get us tired, because we would get thirsty and we could only drink three cups of water a day.” During the dry season, their only water source, a nearby river, ran completely dry. A benevolent farmer allowed the families of Nueva Esperanza to collect a few gallons of water for each family every three days, but it was not enough. “I told my children to take care of the water so that we could have water the next day,” Manuel’s mother said. “I only gave them one glass of water with each meal. I felt terrible for doing so.” Going without water was hard for Manuel and his sister Lilian. Manuel’s thirst was so strong, it kept him awake at night, yearning for just a few drops to soothe his parched tongue. Things got worse, as little Lilian started struggling with heat exhaustion. “I would get so tired because it was really hot, so I would sit down and rest,” Lilian said.

“Manuel would carry me so I wouldn’t get left behind.” When her mother wasn’t looking, Lilian would even sneak an extra sip of water to help quench her thirst.

“I told God that I did not want to suffer so much for water.” - Manuel

When Operation Blessing learned about the need in Nueva esperanza, OB Honduras teams immediately set out to bring water to these thirsty families. In partnership with a local organization that drilled the well, Operation Blessing delivered all the materials necessary to build a water reservoir tank and system, to pipe water into every home. Manuel and others in the community helped dig the ditches for piping and assisted in installing the system. Before long, each family in Nueva Esperanzza had accesss to water whenever they needed it! “I was the first one to use the water faucet,” Manuel said. “Now we can play all day because we can drink all the water we want. Thank you to God and Operation Blessing for giving us the water that we needed so much!”

A Gardening project helps severely malnourished children regain health. At three years old, little Jean Clauge weighed a mere 17 pounds. His mother, Dative, struggled to provide enough nutritious food for him and the other eight children in her care. Rwanda is an agriculture-based society, but many families like Dative’s subsisted solely on rice and beans, because they lack the knowledge and resources to provide more nutritious food. As a result, many children suffer from malnourishment, stunted growth and depressed immune systems. So when Operation Blessing and Gardens for Health partnered together to bring health and agriculutre training to her community, Dative eagerly joined the program in order to better care for her children. Dative attended 14 weeks of health and sanitation instruction and agriculture training. She learned the importance of fresh vegetables for her children’s health, how to grow them and how to prepare a balanced meal. Along with more than 100 other families in her community, Dative was given all the seeds and tools she needed to start her own garden and begin raising small livestock. Meanwhile, as part of the programme, malnourished children like Jean Claude received immediate food aid.

“When I first joined the programme, I did not know about growing vegetables. I did not know it was important for my family to eat them,” Dative said. “Now I grow amaranth, cabbage, carrots, green peppers and sweet potatoes and my family is getting healthy.” Already, little Jean Claude has gained almost nine pounds thanks to the health and agriculture trainging Dative received. In fact, her entire family is healthier and happier! THANK YOU Operation Blessing partners for making it possible to help people like Jean and Dative! Your support really does make a huge, real and lasting impact in the lives of so many desperate and needy people. Together we are showing the world the practical meaning of the Gospel.
