NEW THIS SEASON! BEFORE THE SHOW Join us for Behind the Spotlight, an informative pre-performance talk with members of the artistic team from each production at The Spa Little Theater. Behind the Spotlight talks last approximately 30 minutes, and begin one hour before each performance. Before performances at The Museum of Dance, please enjoy the wonderful exhibits of this nationally renowned collection, including a special exhibit on Director/ Choreographer Karole Armitage.

AFTER THE SHOW Join us on the Arcade overlooking the Reflecting Pool, right outside The Spa Little Theater, after every performance of La Cenerentola and The Long Walk, and meet the performers, artistic and technical staff who bring our productions to life! Post performance receptions are free for all to attend, with a cash bar available. You will also have the opportunity to meet the cast of Dido and Aeneas at the National Museum of Dance after every performance.

As Opera Saratoga’s new Artistic and General Director, I am truly honored to have the opportunity to lead this incredible company into its next chapter. This year, we are expanding our Summer Festival to include three operas over a three and a half week period, from July 2nd to 26th, while also adding a wide range of extra concerts throughout June and July to bring an incredible variety of opera and song to Saratoga Springs. The season includes three operas that couldn’t be more different. La Cenerentola (Cinderella) is a bubbling comedy by Rossini that features virtuoso singing to impress the most passionate opera lovers, and is also an ideal introduction to opera for family audiences. Our presentation of Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas will be our first site-specific production, presented outside under the stars, in partnership with the National Museum of Dance. The world-premiere of The Long Walk, based on the critically acclaimed memoir of war and homecoming by Brian Castner, marks a reaffirmed commitment to the inclusion of contemporary American opera as a regular part of our programming. While Opera Saratoga has produced 33 works by American composers in its history (5 of which have been world-premieres), The Long Walk, commissioned by American Lyric Theater from composer Jeremy Howard Beck and librettist Stephanie Fleischmann, will be the first world-premiere for the Company in 27 years! The guest artists joining us this season are truly extraordinary. They include artists who are performing leading roles at the world’s great opera houses, including The Metropolitan Opera, The Paris Opera and The Vienna Staatsoper… but there is nowhere else that you can enjoy them in such intimate and beautiful settings than Opera Saratoga. This season, we are introducing a number of new benefits for our subscribers, including savings of up to 30% off single ticket prices. I know that there are likely operas you may not be familiar with this season, but with such great discounts, you can’t afford not to give something new a try! Visit us online at www.operasaratoga.org/subscriptions or call our ticket office at 518.584.6018 with any questions you may have. Opera has the amazing ability to bring dreams to life in song. This season, we celebrate dreams of love and forgiveness, hope and heartbreak, family and brotherhood. I cannot wait for the summer to arrive so that I can personally welcome you, and share these dreams and the thrill of great opera with you in our beautiful city.

Lawrence Edelson, Artistic and General Director

(CINDERELLA) PERFORMANCE TIMES

Music by Gioachino Rossini Libretto by Jacopo Ferretti Based on the fairytale by Charles Perrault Opera Saratoga opens the 2015 Summer Season with Rossini’s beloved version of Cinderella. Based on Perrault’s timeless fairytale, La Cenerentola features plenty of magical enchantment; the ridiculous, over-the-top situations and toe-tapping melodies that you expect from the master of comic Italian opera; and heartfelt emotion to bring together this story of forgiveness and true love. The ultimate rags-toriches tale, it’s a Cinderella story... but not quite as you may know it! Opera Saratoga is proud to present the company debuts of five extraordinary singers in La Cenerentola: Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Sandra Piques Eddy sings the virtuoso title role alongside tenor Andrew Owens as Prince Ramiro, baritone John Brancy as his valet Dandini, David Kravitz as her wicked step-father Don Magnifico, and Ryan Kuster as the mysterious philosopher Alidoro. Gary Thor Wedow also makes his company debut conducting this new production by Artistic and General Director Lawrence Edelson. Sung in Italian with English text projected above the stage. La Cenerentola is an ideal opera for families! Matinee performances are recommended for children 6 and older. Evening performances are recommended for children 12 and older. ANGELINA (CENERENTOLA)

PERFORMANCE TIMES

Music by Henry Purcell Libretto by Nahum Tate A SITE-SPECIFIC PRODUCTION – OUTDOORS, UNDER THE STARS Presented in Partnership with The National Museum of Dance Opera Saratoga is thrilled to present the first Baroque opera in the company’s history in a truly unique production under the stars! One of the earliest English operas, Dido and Aeneas is one of Purcell’s foremost theatrical works. This heartbreaking opera recounts the love of Dido, Queen of Carthage, for the Trojan hero, Aeneas, and her despair when he abandons her. The combination of exquisite vocal music and extensive use of dance has inspired many interpretations of the great score. Opera Saratoga has invited world-renowned choreographer and director Karole Armitage to create a very special site-specific production for Saratoga Springs that embraces the natural beauty and history of The National Museum of Dance located in Spa State Park. The production will be conducted by Nicole Paiement, and will feature Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano as Dido, along with the exquisite dancers of the ArmitageGone! Dance Company in what is sure to be one of the most talked about productions of the summer for dance and music lovers alike.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a unique production, staged outdoors. Because the weather is unpredictable, for every performance date we have also scheduled two “rain dates.” Ticket holders will receive information about notification procedures in the event that their performance needs to be postponed due to inclement weather. HEALTH, HISTORY, HORSES… and HIGH C’s! Health and horses are the foundation of Saratoga’s history, and continue to attract thousands of visitors to the region annually. But with Opera Saratoga’s annual Summer Festival presented during the peak of the summer season, Saratoga’s motto of Health, History and Horses seems rather incomplete without the addition of some High C’s… Join us for an Opera Saratoga getaway, and experience world-class opera while also enjoying all that the region has to offer!

find. Downtown Saratoga is consistently rated one of the most scenic in the country, but a visit to our city isn’t complete without a visit to one our beautiful parks.

Located in the southernmost foothills of the Adirondack Region in Upstate New York, Saratoga County is rich not only in cultural offerings, but also in natural beauty and attractions of national historic significance. From the crucial Battle of Saratoga and the early colonial settlers, to the Saratoga Race Track, the Gambling Era, and the significant role played by the USS Saratoga in US naval history, the rich history of Saratoga Springs is colorful and wide ranging.

Just east of the busy downtown district lies a stunning Japanese garden on the grounds of Yaddo – a 400-acre artists’ community that nurtures the creative process by providing an opportunity for artists to work without interruption. Admire the exquisite flowers, plants and scenery as you take it all in. With free admission, Yaddo is a one-of-a-kind treasure and has a special connection to Opera Saratoga’s 2015 season: Jeremy Howard Beck, the composer of The Long Walk, is spending a month at Yaddo this winter to complete the orchestration for the opera!

Victorian charm meets upscale ambiance in “Spa City’s” bustling downtown district. While in town, visit quaint shops selling the latest fashions and gifts, grab a bite to eat in one of the corner cafes or gourmet restaurants, hit the spas for some rejuvenation and relaxation, or take a stroll along Beekman Street – Saratoga’s newest center for the arts, with exquisite galleries, quaint bistros, and funky artist shops perfect for locating that unique

Located in the heart of downtown, Congress Park is the perfect place for outdoor recreation and relaxation, a popular Saratoga hotspot. Take a break from strolling along Broadway to enjoy the carousel, fountains, gardens, mineral springs and more.

Hundreds of acres of lush, well-groomed grounds and several mineral springs make up Spa State Park, which is also home to both of Opera Saratoga’s 2015 performance venues – The Spa Little Theater and The National Museum of Dance. The springs for which the city is named are the only naturally carbonated mineral springs east of the

Rocky Mountains. Mineral water for drinking and bathing, long a European tradition for the health conscious, was the impetus for the explosive development of the city. In 1831, with the advent of the railroad, tourism blossomed. ‘Taking the cure’ at Saratoga became a firmly established tradition for thousands of visitors – a tradition you can still enjoy today. Also within Spa State Park is the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC). This superb outdoor amphitheater is the summer home of New York City Ballet, who will be in residence during part of Opera Saratoga’s season. Don’t miss the opportunity to catch a performance by the world-renowned dancers of NYCB while you are in town for the Opera. The Saratoga Race Course is, of course, one of the defining hotspots in Saratoga Springs, drawing visitors from all over the world for a day at the races. In 1863, a racing meet for thoroughbreds marked the beginning of “the oldest race track in America.” The race course bears the additional distinction of being the oldest sports facility in the country! For the first time, the end of Opera Saratoga’s season will coincide with the beginning of the thoroughbred racing season, allowing visitors to enjoy all that Saratoga Springs has to offer: Health, History, Horses… and High C’s!
