WELCOME

When introducing the ideas behind our new production of Rossini’s La Cenerentola, the director, Laura Hansford, spoke about celebrating the generous, compassionate heart that beats so strongly within the title character. Angelina is a servant living a life of relentless labour with no hope for escape. Despite this, “Her heart is full of beautiful flowers. If the world around us offers little hope, to choose kindness is an act of great strength. That’s a garden we should tend.”

This inspired us to set off into our 2025 season alert to the different ideas of kindness and generosity to be found in the stories and songs we have to share. In many respects, these qualities are central to all the work we do. The act of producing a new performance requires commitment and care from everyone involved, an energy reciprocated by the audiences who come to see our shows.

Brisbane Bel Canto returns with La Cenerentola at its centre. We are excited to be welcoming two rising stars to Queensland for the first time, Mara Gaudenzi as Angelina and Petr Nekoranec as Don Ramiro, the man whose heart she captures. As befits artists involved in a bel canto festival, they have been widely praised for the beauty of their voices. With Richard Mills leading the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, this promises to be a great night in the theatre.

When we launched Brisbane Bel Canto, our goal was to celebrate beautiful singing in all its forms. In 2025 we are presenting a program of concerts covering music from the beginnings of operatic song in Italy to a song cycle composed in Australia over the past few years.

Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University returns, this time to partner on Andrew Ford’s Red Dirt Hymns, a contemporary Australian song cycle that sings praise to the everyday.

We are thrilled to welcome two new partners this year. The University of Queensland School of Music joins us for Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, with Liam Viney and Anna Grinberg playing the piano parts accompanied by a mass choir in The Cathedral of St Stephen. Emerging Brisbane ensemble One Equal Music are also joining us with a program that traces the roots of bel canto back to the madrigal.

The Long Lunch will be curated by Stefano de Pieri, who promises to mix flavours and songs that celebrate Queensland and Italy in a way that only an Italian Australian chef as renowned as Stefano could.

In May we present the Festival of Outback Opera. Our approach to all our regional work is based upon building trust and understanding with the communities we work with. Over the years, Longreach and Winton’s generous and open-hearted embrace of the festival has led to an event that is earning a name for itself around the world. In 2025 we are very excited to have Sumi Jo, one of the great coloratura sopranos, as our headline artist.

Are You Lonesome Tonight was part of the first Festival of Outback Opera, it’s mix of opera and country music struck a chord with audiences right across the state. Thanks to the support of Playing Australia, the show is embarking on a national tour in 2025 which includes a visit to the festival.

Our final mainstage performance is Puccini’s La bohème. An opera that shows us love’s greatest strength is found in being vulnerable. For all the charm and bravado of the four mates it is the tenderness between Mimì and Rodolfo that holds the wonder and power of this timeless story. This new production designed by Charles Davis, who was responsible for the beautiful design of La traviata, sets the story in early 20th century Paris, perfectly capturing all the romanticism of that city and this extraordinary opera. With Umberto Clerici leading the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, this is not to be missed.

Beyond our Queensland season, our productions continue to be seen around the country and the world. We are excited to share that our production of Orpheus and Eurydice created in association with Circa will be presented at the Edinburgh International Festival next year before a season in Melbourne. Our production of La traviata returns to the Sydney Opera House as part of Opera Australia’s summer season, as does Dido and Aeneas, our other production created in association with Circa.

All this activity would not be possible without the investment of our various partners. Arts Queensland, Creative Australia and Brisbane City Council are key to our creation of new opportunities for artists, creative workers and audiences. While the generosity of our community of donors and sponsors, including the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation, Frazer Family Foundation, Mather Foundation, Wagner Corporation and Philip Bacon AO, enables us to be ambitious and continually explore the possibilities of the artform.

Thank you also to our key performance partners, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University and The University of Queensland.

Finally, thank you to our audiences, wherever you are, your generosity in participating in our various performances and programs is the beating heart at the centre of the Opera Queensland community.

BEL CANTO

BRISBANE BEL CANTO RETURNS TO CONTINUE OUR EXPLORATION OF THE ART OF BEAUTIFUL SINGING

ROSSINI LA CENERENTOLA (CINDERELLA)

La Cenerentola is a tale of heart and humour full of clever disguises, unlikely heroes, a midnight ball and the kindness of one very determined young woman.

An invitation to the Prince’s Ball arrives, but the gentle and warmhearted Angelina (Cinderella) is overlooked by her selfish stepsisters and father Don Magnifico. Kindness, however, can conjure an unpredictable magic; when Cinderella captures the heart of Prince Ramiro, it’s not the slipper that fits, but her heart that shines. This enchanting night at the opera offers the joyous conclusion that fairytales can come true.

BRISBANE BEL CANTO

THE BIRTH OF BEL CANTO

The Birth of Bel Canto traces the roots of bel canto opera back to the madrigal. Known for its romantic poetry, intricate musical textures, and emotive vocal lines, the madrigal forms the basis of the bel canto operatic style.

Five solo voices, accompanied by continuo (cello and harpsichord), will bring to life the expressive works of Monteverdi, Gesualdo, Strozzi, and other leading composers of the time. These early songs explore themes of love, heartbreak, and the complexity of the human condition – the emotional terrain that laid the foundations for opera as an artform.

Presented in association with One Equal Music, one of Brisbane’s most accomplished choral ensembles.

ROSSINI

Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle (Little solemn mass), written in 1863, is a glorious celebration of sacred music written towards the end of Rossini’s life. Neither little nor solemn, this is a work of profound beauty and exultant joy.

Written for two pianos and a harmonium, with four soloists and a choir, our collaboration with The University of Queensland sees us joined by two of Australia’s great pianists – Anna Grinberg and Liam Viney.

Perfect for seasoned concertgoers and newcomers, Rossini combines orchestral and choral textures, to create a work distinguished by its unashamed romanticism.

PUCCINI LA BOHEME

“…as dazzling as snow in sunshine.”

Limelight

One of the world’s most beloved and famous operas, La bohème explores the lives of four bohemians struggling to realise their dreams on the fringe of society.

Set against the backdrop of 1920s Paris, this timeless story revolves around the passionate romance of poet Rodolfo and seamstress Mimì, whose deep love for each other is tested by the harsh realities of poverty and illness.

With a great love story comes beautiful music, and Puccini’s powerfully romantic score features some of the greatest arias and duets in the operatic repertoire. For opera aficionados and first-timers alike, La bohème is a tender and heartbreaking opera that will sweep you off your feet.

La bohème is an original coproduction by Opera Queensland and West Australian Opera. Presented in association with Brisbane Festival.
