arrangements for you to collect it at a convenient time. Please ensure that you obtain a receipt.

Have you ever wanted to try your hand at printmaking; improve your oil painting technique, or find out how to make and use natural dyes? These workshops are your chance to learn a new way of using your creativity or to improve your existing skills, with the artist in their own studio.

Open Studios Cornwall is a celebration of Cornwall’s wealth of creative talent, and the following information will help you to enjoy that talent to the full:

Pick up the artist’s information card if you like their work, so that you remember where they are and can contact them again if you want to add to your collection of their work.

Each venue will be clearly indicated by a Cornwall Open Studios sign – so look out for the orange ‘O’ as you travel around. This catalogue is designed to be easy to use. It is divided into North/East, Mid and West and within each section the artists are ordered geographically and then alphabetically. If you are planning to visit a particular place, such as Falmouth or St Ives, you can look up which artists are exhibiting in that area. If you intend to visit a particular artist, you can find out who else is in their neighbourhood. Remember, opening times vary and not all participants exhibit for the whole week, so check the opening times before you visit. If you have particular access needs, please phone the exhibitor in advance. Most exhibitors will be happy to take a deposit to reserve an artwork and make

Many artists are happy to accept commissions. It is important to make sure that what is agreed is confirmed in writing.

Feedback is essential for the future development of Open Studios Cornwall. The artists will ask you to complete a feedback questionnaire. Completing it means that you have a chance to win a bottle of Camel Valley “Cornwall Brut”! Most importantly – please don’t forget your cheque book! Most exhibitors are not able to take payment by credit card – but cash will do nicely, thank you!

Open Studios Cornwall 2012 is generously sponsored by Mylor Yacht Harbour. Join us at facebook.com/openstudioscornwall Follow us at twitter.com/OpenStudiosCorn

Details of the artists’ studios and their work can be found under their entries in the catalogue. Once you have decided which workshop you would like to attend, please contact the artist direct to book a place, or to find out more about what will be involved.

Creative Skills runs Open Studios Cornwall from their office in Redruth’s former Grammar School – now known as Krowji (Cornish for shed or small cottage), a vibrant creative community and Cornwall’s foremost sector-based business cluster. Krowji houses many of Cornwall’s key strategic cultural and creative industries projects, along with a wide range of creative businesses and practitioners – a total of about 110 people at the moment. The complex integrates creative workspaces, a wi-fi enabled café, meeting rooms and hot desking facilities with business support and information, advice and guidance services for practitioners and creative businesses, as well as playing a role in the regeneration of Redruth and the surrounding area. Krowji is owned and run by ACT – Cornwall Arts Centre Trust, the parent company of

Krowji has about 45 studios, ranging in size from tiny cubby-holes at about 60 square feet up to shared spaces of 1,000 square feet or more. They all have 24 hour, 365 days access, natural light and electricity, as well as access to some office services by arrangement. Tenancy agreements are on easy in/out terms. There’s a real mix of artforms here, from furniture makers to photographers to web designers to painters to jewellers to textile makers to ceramicists. There’s also a large rehearsal space and several meeting rooms available to hire by the hour or day. See our website at www.krowji.org.uk for more details. Studios to rent become available on a regular basis so if you’re interested please contact Elisa McLeod on 01209 313200 or email her at elisa@actcornwall.org.uk The Melting Pot café is also here, so if you visit the many Krowji artists during Open Studios Cornwall you will be able to enjoy the delights of homemade cake and fair-trade teas and coffees. The café is fully licensed and provides an all day menu.

In my hand built ceramics I maintain a simplicity and directness of shape, colour and surface throughout the whole process of making. I often burnish my pots several times which enables me to really get to know the characteristics of individual pieces. The drawn decoration also allows a similar intimacy with the form.

I make wall mounted, sculptural poems. I find beauty in the small and discarded, bringing together found things and embedding them in resin. These poems I frame with recycled wood and copper to make them precious and sacred as are our memories and dreams. I also paint and draw the things I find and the places I find them.

Peter Skerrett

A crisp, blank white roll of paper is the place I love to dive into my most intimate landscapes. Nature, Architecture, lovers and animals all emerge in my large scale drawings and paintings that explore the ever changing narrative of my personal relationships and insignificant adventures.

The work is inspired by observations of the Cornish landscape Strong gales blow off the Atlantic sea eroding rocks and plants, smoothing and bending them into rugged, beautiful shapes. When the plates are stacked they echo the Cornish landscape forming layers of contrasting tones of timber with a full round edge. £45–£400.

I paint to crystallise and convey the connection I feel with the landscape – its drama and emotion. I work outside, in a rush, striving to capture the inspirational moment before it passes. I paint larger work in the studio using music to amplify and heighten the memory of being there, reliving the moment and the magic.

I use photography to explore the relationship between colour, light and form that pervades landscapes in Cornwall. My photos are taken to emphasise natural colours, before being digitally enhanced to produce a stylised abstraction of the original image. My work explores the abstract effects of colours in various states of flow through experiments with paint application. These images evoke spiritual themes of destruction, rebirth and hope. Sculptural furniture. Designs inspired by the landscapes of Cornwall. My paintings contain a mix of interior and exterior elements to create dreamlike, hallucinatory spaces. Much of my focus is on the manipulation of paint and a playful, painterly process. I am particularly interested in the ambiguities between the illusions of space in contrast to the enriching of the surface.

It is the detail found within the vastness of the landscape that inspires my pictures. Using layers of emulsion, pencil, chalk and papers I create intimate paintings that follow the changing seasons of West Penwith; whether it be the winter colours of a hawthorn hedge line, or an orange Crocosmia flower against an aqua sea.
