Annual Information Fair

Proud and leading the way… The Opening Doors team would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone (our colleagues, The Green Man Pub, St. Anne’s, our dedicated team of project volunteers, friends and family) who volunteered on this year’s Pride, and of course, to our members, without whom the Pride march simply would not exist!

This year’s Info Fair will focus on Housing. Full details will be circulated nearer the time but please SAVE THE DATE: Friday 16th September 2-5pm at the Soho Centre.

Opening Doors Men’s Group August Activities and Events Wednesday 3rd 6pm – 9:00pm

First Wednesday of the month men’s group social: Note the new address!! St Margaret’s Drop-in Centre, 1 Carey Place, Vauxhall Bridge Road, SW1V 2RT (just across Vauxhall Bridge Road from Pimlico Tube). Come and check out the new venue. With easy access from North and South London (see ad on page 7), why not come along and meet some new friends?

Thursday 4th 12.30 (lunch at 1pm)

New Opening Doors London Thursday Lunch Club: With the closure of the Harris Centre, we’re temporarily relocating the Friday Lunch Club to a Thursday to St Anne’ Anne’s Church, 55 Dean Street, Soho, W1D 6AF (until we find a new, permanent location, unless of course it proves very successful here). The charge for a 2 course lunch is £3.50 (vegetarian option available). Arrive at St Anne’s for 12:30 for your free glass of sherry. Lunch is followed by afternoon activities and afternoon tea. Call ahead and book the lunch by Wednesday afternoon with St Anne’s on 020 7437 8039. Thanks.

Men’s Group Walks: Join us for August’s walk, meeting at 2:15 (for a 2:30pm start), outside Bond Street tube station, exit 1on Oxford St. Today’s walk follows the Tyburn River Walk. See the most haunted house in London, some goldfish in the river, Shepherds Market and a disused underground station.

Henderson Court Men’s Speaker’s Night: Henderson Court Resource Centre, 102 Fitzjohn’s Ave (entrance round the corner on Prince Arthur Rd) NW3 6NS. Tonight’s guest speaker is Chris Park, who will be speaking about the Rainbow Network, the LGBT group within the Ministry of Justice. (Tracy from Advice and Information will be on hand tonight to help with any questions you may have on benefits, housing or other referrals)

Wednesday 10th 6:30 – 8:30pm

Arts and Crafts MIXED Group: Charlie Ratchford Resource Centre, Belmont Street, NW1 8HF (Belmont St is across the road and down from Chalk Farm tube, there’s a Sainsbury’s on the corner of Chalk farm Rd and Belmont St). Join us for facilitated sessions of Life Drawing or Digital Photography. Bring along any of your own artwork to discuss with the group as we work towards establishing a theme to work with. For those that can afford it, to help with costs (venue hire and equipment) a donation of £3.00 is suggested.

3rd Wednesday Men’s Pub Night at the Black Cap: We’re back at the Black Cap, on Camden High St, NW1 7JY for this popular men’s group pub social. Meeting upstairs from 7pm. And once again thanks to Dan and Phil and all at the Black Cap for their support

Tufnell Park Coffee Evening: Due to the August bank holiday, the coffee evening has been moved forward a week, so come and join us for our monthly coffee evening, as hosted by Leslie and Mike. Meeting up at Tufnell Park Tube station at 7.45 p.m. Please remember to bring a few nibbles and refreshments with you.

Henderson Court Men’s Group Film Night: Henderson Court Resource Centre, 102 Fitzjohn’s Ave (entrance round the corner on Prince Arthur Rd) NW3 6NS. For tonight’s film we will be showing the 2010 must see “BearCity”. Set in New York's gay "bear" scene and taking a cue from the popular HBO franchise "Sex and the City," BearCity follows a tight-knit pack of friends experiencing comical mishaps, emotionally sweet yet lusty romantic encounters and a cast of colorful, diverse characters as they gear up for a big party weekend, showing that truly, romance can be hairy….

Drumming Circle: New Unity Church 277A Upper Street, Islington, N1 (Next to Islington Fire Station) Laura Valenti will be continuing to facilitate the drumming circle which will explore the rhythms of life, as well as the meaning of drumming together (as an empowering and transformational tool) and of being a community. BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL SO YOU CAN BE GIVEN DETAILS ON HOW TO ACCESS THE CORRECT HALL – Contact Stacey for details.

NEW Computer Training Centre at Tavis House This autumn we will be launching our new computer training centre in Tavis House, please join us at the launch event on:

Thursday the 18th August, Anytime between 2.00-5.00pm At Tavis House, Tavistock Square WC1H 9NA At the new centre we will be offering: 10 week ‘Beginners Guide to Computers’ course on Tuesday afternoons If you are new to computers and would like to learn about using email, the internet and word processing then our 10 week beginner’s course is for you. Over the ten weeks you will work through the course in a fully supported environment and receive individual support form our team of knowledgeable volunteer tutors.

‘Drop In’ sessions for competent computer users on Thursday mornings At the drop in sessions you can come along without prior appointment, to access the Internet for free and meet like minded people. Knowledgeable volunteers will be on hand to help you with any questions you may have and to suggest new things you might like to try out. So come along and try it out.
