Opening Doors in Central London Monthly Newsletter for Older Lesbian, December 2010 Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People Merry Christmas, Season’s Greetings, Happy Holidays to one and all. We’re not only at the end of 2010, but also at the end of the first 3 years of the Opening Doors Central London project itself. In last month’s newsletter we told you we’ve now signed up in excess of 500 older LGBT men and women to the project, with an ever widening range of activities, meetings, lunch clubs and outings and befriending across all 5 boroughs of Camden, Hackney, Islington, Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster, as well as supporting a lot of other older LGBT work across London and beyond. We simply could not have done this without the help of a lot of people. A big thank you to all staff behind the scenes working on funding bids and admin, our project ambassadors who promote the service in all sorts of formal and informal settings, the pubs, who have donated venue space, food and money, the LGBT Liaison Officers from the police and a lot more people we owe a lot of thanks to. But notably a huge vote of thanks to our volunteers, both in the groups and befrienders, without whom we wouldn’t have half of the service we have each month. And of course last but not least, a thanks to all of you, our older LGBT men and women for your support and participation in the project. Thank you, one and all, and Merry Christmas everyone. We have a variety if seasonal festivities on offer, so check out the mixed and men's and women’s specific listings. And as always, if you have any questions about any of the groups or activities, or indeed suggestions for new activities, then please don’t hesitate to give Nick or Stacey a call on the numbers listed below. with best wishes Stacey and Nick

A huge big wonderful thank you to all the volunteers, friends and partners who gave up their weekend to go do collections in the gay pubs for the project and thanks to all the pubs who took part. The general response was initially one of “oh I never thought about that”, followed by “what a fantastic project” and then followed by a donation, many people giving £10 and £20 notes. All in all we collected a staggering £2,251.34 which will certainly help keep the project going until we have confirmed future funding from the bids mentioned in last month’s newsletter. We will keep you informed of future funding ideas… thanks again. Griffith Vaughan Williams, 1940–2010 It’s with great sadness that we announce the death of Griffith Vaughan Williams. Our condolences to his partner, Paul. Griff had been a gay activist since about 1964, and was a leading member of the Campaign for Homosexual Equality from its very earliest days. In recent years and despite ill health, Griff continued his work with CHE and was also an campaigner for older LGBT issues and was an active member of Opening Doors Central London. The service will be at Mortlake Crematorium (Kew Meadow Path, Townmead Road, Richmond, TW9 4EN, nearest tube or overground is Kew, directions on notice board on exit from the station) on Wednesday 8th December at 12:30pm for anyone wishing to pay their last respects. Griff, the LGBT community owes you a debt of thanks and you will be sadly missed. 2
