From the Director’s Chair It seems to be a year of breaking records! We have experienced the polar vortex with unbelievable low temps, the Mississippi River flooding for over 80 days, and it felt like July broke heat and humidity records. At Opening Doors we are experiencing our own recordbreaking events. In May, we provided 1,218 bed nights— the highest in the history of Opening Doors. In June, we broke another record—we served 76 people in our programs. Like the weather, it’s difficult to pinpoint specific causes. We do know that the need for our services is increasing!

Carol Gebhart Executive Director

We are starting to work on what we hope will be another record breaker—our 18th annual “Attitude of Gratitude.” Please consider joining us on Saturday, November 23 at the Grand River Center. We hope to see you there!

Businesses Address Space Issues Opening Doors has been challenged to meet its mission over the past three years due to space constraints at Teresa Shelter. In June, we had a record intake and we had to turn away 54 individuals due to space issues. This increase in the demand for our services prompted an urgent need to reconfigure the space for staff efficiency and the safety of our residents. Two local businesses collaborated to provide a solution. Gerb Smith of Smith Home Gallery & Cabinet Works visited the site and proposed a solution to build an intake room, which allowed additional office space for staff. Gerb reached out to John Cook, General Manager of Spahn & Rose Lumber Co. who offered to donate all of the supplies needed for the project. Gerb’s team constructed the main structure for the room. Joel Mozena from Mozena Construction and Colin Dolphin installed two doors for the project. Many thanks to volunteers Kent Schumacher and Jim & Kathy Glennon for your assistance. Our dedicated volunteers are in the process of putting the final touches on this project. As a result, staff have adequate office space to support our residents, and we have a dedicated, private intake space to welcome new residents. Providing a safe, supportive and hospitable environment is a basic tenet to meeting our mission.

Celebrating Milestones At Opening Doors, we love to celebrate milestones in the lives of the women we serve. We are proud of these amazing women for their courage and determination! From the moment she laid eyes on the beautiful *Francis Apartments, Juli knew she wanted to live there some day. After working hard in our programs, she realized her dream in July. She will continue to work with her Case Manager through our permanent supportive housing program. *Francis Apartments is owned by Steeple Square and is managed by Gronen Properties.

LaQuana

In July, LaQuana moved to the Maria House with Judah, was hired full-time at Stonehill AND she registered for CNA courses at NICC...all in the same week! Erika celebrated her July birthday by passing all the GED tests (completing the process in a little over a month) and moving to the Maria House from Teresa Shelter. She will start college classes at NICC in August to work toward a degree in Sociology. She is pictured here with her daughter Zhane, who is SO proud of her mom!

One Saturday to Dream Fearlessly Mother Nature smiled down on the 2nd annual “One Saturday to Dream Fearlessly” event on July 27 at the Dubuque Marina & Yardarm. This national event initiative from American Family Insurance was brought to Dubuque in 2018 by local agent Michael Pennington (pictured lower left) to raise awareness for Opening Doors. This three-hour family friendly event featured a Wish List drive and music by Sid V and the Human Resources. The Yardarm generously contributed some of the proceeds from food and drink sales. Michael said, “My team loves helping out Opening Doors and giving back to Dubuque. Last year we visited the Maria House and it inspired us to plan and sponsor ‘One Saturday to Dream Fearlessly.’ We set the bar high with a fantastic event, and this year we raised even more awareness and the necessary supplies Opening Doors needed. ‘Dream Fearlessly’ is more than a slogan, it’s a call to action! We want to let everyone in the Dubuque area know how great Opening Doors is for our community!” Many thanks to sponsors Michael Pennington, Jamie Becker from The Yardarm, Sid V & the Human Resources band members, and volunteer Mary Jo Fleege.
