Six Month Check Up
I can’t believe I’ve had my dream job for over six months! Time is flying by and I continue to learn new things and be inspired every day. Opening Doors is blessed with an AMAZING team! I am in awe of the energy and talent this team brings to the table. Every day. 24/7/365.
I am so humbled and honored to work with this group helping women and children build a better life. I cannot truly empathize with what it feels like to be homeless, but my cup of compassion overflows. Executive Director Carol Gebhart and her children Ava and Braden
Let me tell you about one of the incredible ladies that Opening Doors has served. Marie came to the Teresa Shelter…and struggled. As a woman who had successfully provided for herself for many years, being homeless was a bitter pill to swallow. She left, and subsequently experienced an awakening and realized that she’d been doing it on her own for so long, but it wasn’t working. She was ready to ask for help. She came back, and the magic began. Marie’s transformation was huge. Instead of bucking rules and programming, she began embracing them. She became the “resident advisor,” helping many women who came to shelter with the same mindset that she had on her first visit. She experienced great success at her job—receiving company recognition and awards for her service. Marie says that learning to love herself was the key. It opened her eyes—and her “I’s.” Her “I” messages to herself changed everything. “I am strong.” “ I am beautiful.” “ I am worthy.”
Marie’s goal was to save enough money to move out of state to be near her daughter. She achieved her goal and is now living in an apartment, secured employment, and spreading her positive attitude on life everywhere she goes. Certainly, I am blessed to know Marie. What a great inspiration she is, and she left her heartprint on us all.
YOU also inspire me—I am amazed at the wonderful community support that pours in. Dubuque is a wonderful community and your kindness and willingness to help others is something to be proud of. We could not do this work without your support.
I wish I could say that the need for services was taking a downturn. Quite the opposite—we are operating at or near capacity and have been for all of 2018. In 2017, we had a record number of bed nights at Teresa Shelter—a 23% increase over 2016. We are on track to serve as many or more than 2017.
Maria House and Francis Apartments are staying their course in providing transitional and permanent supportive housing. It’s been almost a year since the Francis Apartments opened. We are so fortunate to be able to offer this opportunity. Permanent supportive housing has been proven to break the cycle of homelessness. Our Francis Apartments residents are LOVING their new homes!

Opening Doors is the nonprofit organization that operates Maria House, Teresa Shelter and the permanent supportive housing program at the Francis Apartments. Homeless women, alone or with children, come to us to help rebuild their lives. We provide goal setting and life skills training that will enable them to take care of themselves and achieve their full potential. Women are dependent when the enter...independent when they leave.

New Venue for Trivia Night
Thanks to a sponsorship from the Grand River Center, guests at Trivia Night on April 20 enjoyed a new venue for our annual event. Our fun-loving emcee Pati Gallogly guided 24 teams through 10 rounds of trivia developed by event chair Tim Pope. Tim also serves on our Opening Doors’ Board of Directors.
Our top three teams (pictured right) generously donated their prize winnings back to Opening Doors. “Motherhouse of Knowledge” comprised of staff and friends from Sisters of Charity BVM took the top spot. Second place was “Irish I Knew the Answer,” and taking home third place bragging rights was “The Tim Pope Experience.” Many thanks to our volunteers and to *Kurt Wagner, children’s book author (*see story on back cover).
Pull out your smart phone and mark your calendar for Friday, February 1, 2019 for “Trivia Bowl.” Once again, the Grand River Center has generously donated the Exhibit Hall for this event!
One Saturday to Dream Fearlessly
It was a dream of local American Family agent Michael Pennington to bring a national event initiative called “One Saturday to Dream Fearlessly” to Dubuque. These events are typically held in large cities, but on Saturday, June 30, community volunteers and businesses came together at the Steeple Square Community Event Center to assemble 200 care kits for new clients at Opening Doors. Local businesses also provided children’s activities for our residents and the community. (Right: Michael presented a check for $2,000 to further the mission of Opening Doors!)
Many thanks to Michael Pennington and also to Jennifer Steffen from American Family Insurance, American Trust & Savings Bank, Clare Cares, Dubuque Fire & Police Departments, DuTrac Community Credit Union, Grand Opera House, Hy-Vee, Paramount Ambulance, Premier Bank, Prudential, Steeple Square and Kurt Wagner, children’s book author. Many thanks to our emcee Johnny Rhodes from 97.3 The Rock. We are also so grateful to all of our volunteers and to everyone that donated Wish List items.
“Our Mission at American Family Insurance is to Inspire, Protect and Restore Dreams. Teaming up with Opening Doors to assemble these care packages and raise awareness for their amazing work allowed us to prove our commitment to Dreams. The “One Saturday” events are held across the country by American Family Agents to partner with local charities to inspire, support and celebrate their community. My team and I were excited to be a part of this event and give back. Amazing things happen when we come together to inspire Dreams and support Dubuque.”—Michael Pennington, Agency Owner, 960 Cedar Cross Road, 563.564.4704
“Dancing with the Stars - Dubuque Style” Kim Budde and her partner Adam Kieffer of Adam’s Dance Connection wowed the crowd with their rendition of “Time of My Life” from “Dirty Dancing” at Five Flags on May 12. Kim and Adam practiced weekly for six months to prepare for the competition. This annual event is sponsored by the Dubuque Area Chamber of Commerce.
On April 28, the Dubuque Marina & Yardarm hosted a special fundraiser for Kim. They donated 15% of the beverage, food and apparel sales, and music was donated by Hard Salami. Attendees purchased chances for a booze wagon donated by Family Beer & Liquor Store and Van’s Liquor Store. Many thanks to all of the individuals and businesses that sponsored Kim’s dance. See pages six and seven for a complete list of Kim & Adam’s fans! Kim is Vice President of Human Resources at Kunkel & Associates, Inc., an Opening Doors’ Board Member, and chair of our Personnel Committee.

Board Spotlight: Brandon Bauer
Congratulations to outgoing Opening Doors' Board member Corporal Brandon Bauer on his recent promotion to Gang Intelligence Coordinator assigned to the Dubuque Police Department Neighborhood Response Team. He had previously been a Community Policing Officer. Thank you for supporting our mission! Opening Doors is proud of the work that the City of Dubuque’s Police and Fire Department does for our community. Members of both departments (pictured below) participated in the June 30 “Dream Fearlessly” event. Many thanks to the staff at Paramount Ambulance as well for your participation and for all of your support over the years!

Local Author Supports Opening Doors!
Kurt Wagner and his wife, Tina, live in Bellevue, Iowa and are parents of Alec, Jake, Ciarra, and Kole. Christmas has always been their favorite holiday, full of special family traditions.
Kurt dreamed of writing children's books for years, and decided to pursue his dream. He included many of his own family traditions in writing “The Mouse Who Stirred at Christmas” and “Anthony’s Happy Halloween.” Kurt incorporated the magic and excitement of the holidays and aimed to write his books through the eyes of a child and an adorable little mouse named Anthony. The title of the third book in the Anthony’s Adventures series entitled, “Anthony’s Summer Vacation,” will be released in October and is based off his family adventures and fun experiences.
Throughout 2018, Kurt will support Opening Doors with a $5.00 donation for each book sold through our organization. Stay tuned for a special Meet the Author Day in the fall!
To order, send a check for $16.95 per book to Opening Doors, 2100 Asbury Road, Suite 8, Dubuque, IA 52001. (Indicate which book title(s) you wish to order.) Special pricing of $15.00 for lots of 10+. Great for Christmas and corporate gifts!
