Olympics and all that…

World Pride 2012

As we mentioned in last month’s news and, as you’re all well aware from the ads you see everywhere, the Olympics will disrupt travel in London quite a bit. Whilst Opening Doors staff will be around where we can in the office or working from home, by necessity we are having to cancel some of our regular meetings, especially where we think that travel for both members and volunteers will be problematic. Please read the listings for full details of meetings that will be going ahead or for those that will be cancelled. Thanks.

Clayton’s candid, touching and humorous accounts of life as co-owner of a fashionable shop in London’s Old Compton Street are enchanting and his writing finds humour and affection for the prostitutes, street cleaners, transsexuals, bag ladies and shoplifters that he encountered on one the most colourful street corners in the world. Opening Doors Members News CHANGES TO WORLD PRIDE CELEBRATIONS IN LONDON 07 JULY 2012 Following an all-agency meeting at City Hall on the 27th June regarding the Pride London World Pride 2012 celebrations on the 7th of July, all agencies involved in delivering the event, including the GLA, WCC and Met Police have agreed that it is prudent to deliver an event that is affordable, without compromising the safety, security and integrity of the event. The parade itself has been scaled down and will now be a “procession” that will not include floats or vehicles (such as our bus) and the start time has been brought forward by 2 hours to 11:00 a.m. This effectively rules out Opening Doors London involvement, as our primary focus was the open decked bus at the front of the parade, and with the parade time now clashing with our scheduled Pride Brunch, this too has been cancelled. Furthermore events at Trafalgar Square and in Soho are being scaled down and brought forward or called off, effectively cancelling our own St Anne’s relaxation area. As the procession will now consist solely of walking groups with no clear indication (at time of print) of how these will be managed, it is regrettable that Age UK Camden’s Opening Doors London must cancel any planned older LGBT activities on the day as we cannot guarantee the comfort and safety of members taking part in the procession. We regret taking the above decision, but feel with limited time and information available, it is the only action possible. We apologise for the inconvenience caused and ask that you please pass the above message on to any friends or colleagues that you were planning on bringing along on the day. Staff Contact Details
