“I had a career for a few years before law school, but since coming to ONU, I have felt empowered in a way that I never really did before. I know now that success is in my grasp, and I attribute that in large part to the support and concern of the faculty and the administration at ONU.” DREW PUGSLEY, 3L Editor-in-Chief, ONU Law Review Jefferson, Ohio

FIRST SEMESTER, First Year
First-year students are enrolled in a required comprehensive core curriculum designed to provide a well-rounded understanding of American law. This includes Property, Civil Procedure, Contracts, Torts, and Legal Research and Writing. You are pre-registered for all courses your first semester only.
JANUARY TERM, First Year (Required)
The College of Law offers an innovative January Term. First year students take a course on Legal Problem Solving & Analysis, which has two main purposes: (1) sharpening the first year students’ ability to analyze and resolve legal problems, and (2) providing students with an opportunity to interact with members of the profession. The class sizes of 14 to 16 students are deliberately smaller than the size of a typical law school class to enable the professors to provide the students with prompt and thorough feedback. The assignments, writing exercises, and prompt individual feedback help the students learn how to effectively develop and refine their analytical and legal problem solving skills.
SECOND SEMESTER, First Year
In the spring semester of your first year, you will register for Public Law and the Legal Process, Property 2, Civil Procedure 2, Contracts 2, Legal Research and Writing 2, and Criminal Law. If you matriculated in the summer, register for Evidence in lieu of the courses you took in the summer. Make certain to register for the correct section of each of your classes. You must continue each course in the section in which you started. LEARN MORE For course descriptions and upper-level requirements, go to law.onu.edu and select First Year Curriculum.

CLINIC DESCRIPTIONS law.onu.edu/academics/clinical-programs
Pursue a Clinic CLINICAL PLACEMENT PROGRAMS More than 45 years of providing real-life practical experience, in and out of the classroom. Developing practice-ready lawyers is ONU Law’s mission, and we offer a high-impact learning environment for each student. We created our clinics in the early 1960s, almost 20 years before any other law school in the country. We are excited to offer some of the most extensive clinical placements in the Midwest. They allow students to interact with and represent clients; draft pleadings, briefs and memos; provide research and writing for federal judges; and make court appearances. Every student is mentored by a specialized attorney, providing the student the opportunity to receive guidance at the elbow of someone who has mastered his or her craft. More than 60 percent of ONU Law’s student body participates in our clinical programs, which are offered for academic credit.
WHY PARTICIPATE IN A CLINICAL PROGRAM?
While we pride ourselves on our ability to teach theory, the skills learned in programs like our clinics set our students apart, both on their résumés and in practice settings. These opportunities to stand out from graduates of other law programs make participating in clinical programs worth every minute. PG 5
