RAMBAM MEDICAL CENTER

Rambam Making BReakthrough Kidney Disease Research Discoveries Rambam Medical Center believes in a personalized approach to the advancement of human health with a global outreach. Situated in Haifa, the largest city in northern Israel, on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea – The Medical Center and city represent a microcosm of global human diversity. Haifa’s population is well-known for its heterogeneity and this is nowhere best reflected than at Rambam Health Care Campus. A wonderful myriad of cultures, traditions, ancestral backgrounds, religious beliefs, personal talents and attributes leads to the great success of Rambam Medical Center in contributing to global health care advancement. Besides the blessing and advantage of this diversity, we also face the challenge of health disparities among peoples and communities of varying background. These disparities cut across all backgrounds and cover all domains of human health. We view this both as a challenge and an opportunity. One of the most striking global challenges is the disparity in cardiovascular and kidney disease with 4-to-5 fold greater risk of disease morbidity and mortality in people of African ancestry. This has been well studied in the African-American community in the United States, and researchers at Rambam have made seminal contributions through recent discoveries

based on advanced genetics research. The discovery of the principal genetic variation underlying this disparity – now opens the opportunity for promoting and preserving health and preventing diseases such as high blood pressure, kidney failure, heart attack and stroke. Working with leading medical centers in the United States, such as Johns Hopkins University Medical Center, University of Miami, the NIH, and others – Rambam research scientists have proved to be pioneer and world leaders in the discovery of solutions with tremendous potential for advancing human health in numerous areas ranging from stem cell technology to bioengineering, population genetics, diabetes, and cancer imaging. It is now time to apply this ingenuity to one of the most important health challenges of the century. The African ancestry risk for cardiovascular and kidney disease is emerging as one of the most important health challenges for 700 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa and the corresponding African ancestry population worldwide. Rambam Medical Center has established collaborations with physicians, health professionals, and community leaders in a number of African nations, to conduct genetic risk testing, and measures that will prevent kidney disease and promote cardiovascular health. Rambam scientists are part of the H3Africa Health Network, whose center is at the University of Ghana, with member consortia centers in the United

States and throughout the African continent. Rambam is the only center in the world outside of North America and Africa to be part of this consortium. The reason is our internationally recognized expertise in population genetics and personalized medicine, as well as close connections with the African continent. The lessons and advances learned have implications for a whole new approach to global health care. By understanding the genetic and environmental factors which underlie health disparities and by developing a paradigm for approaching these challenges – Rambam can take a lead in other major health areas such as cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and others, as well as infectious diseases.
