Swap and trade sites such as gardentalk.co.uk and gardenswapshop.co.uk are free to use and gardeners can swap seeds and plants with other members via online forums as well as the chance to buy and sell. Seedysunday.org lists seed swapping events where people can meet in your local area. Recycling sites such as freecycle.org or streetbank.com can be useful for free seeds, plants and gardening equipment.

Medical Success Young medics at Merchant Taylors’ Schools have their fingers on the pulse of admission to the toughest university courses. A record 22% of Merchant Taylors’ Girls’ School Sixth Form students have won offers to study Medicine and Dentistry at U.K. universities. An astonishing 15 of all 67 students at the Merchant Taylors’ Girls’ School have been successful in the most competitive of all university admissions procedures. The girls’ success follows the national trend for more women to enter the medical and dental professions with the number of women on roll averaging between 60% and 80% across U.K. universities. The young men of Merchants are not far behind. This year seven young men, or nearly 10% of Year 13 students, have received offers to top medical and dental schools. Head of Merchant Taylors’ Girls’ Sixth Form, Marie Peppin, put the success down to passion, commitment and intellectual ability. Marie said, “Girls have excellent academic profiles, are passionate about their vocation, have a variety of hands on experience and voluntary work, and can demonstrate outstanding caring qualities. MG’s Chinese Revival How’s this for a car club? There’ll be no age limit and it’ll be open to anyone who enjoys the sensual and aural pleasures of driving more slowly. Townley Rogers thinks he has the perfect car for members… It was a brilliant slogan for an average car. Remember ‘Man and machine in perfect harmony’ which launched Ford’s new Sierra back in the eighties? Spool forward almost thirty years and I’m ambling along the A59 towards Skipton at a steady fifty five miles an hour. That catchy phrase is looping round my memory bank - but this isn’t a Ford I’m driving, it’s MG’s ‘born again’ TF135. That I’m at the wheel of a new MG is noteworthy in itself. Remember that fateful April evening five years ago when the headlines recorded MG Rover’s sad demise; I can’t have been the only enthusiast wondering if that was simply the end of a UK sporting institution.

Townley Rogers takes a look at the new MG TF.

The Micra raised automotive ugliness to an art form while the fact the Tigra lasted even two years tells its own woeful tale. And the TF still looks good, even at 15 years old. It drives well, too – but is best enjoyed at a slower pace when you can actually appreciate the open road, the mid engined sportster’s smooth ride and accurate steering both conspiring to deliver an unforgettable driving experience. MG has big plans for the future, too! Its new 6 range will soon be launched in the UK while its ‘Zero’ concept car is a tantalising glimpse of a re-entry into the hot hatch market where the ZR once reigned supreme. Of course, the TF will be replaced as well, so despite my premise that slow driving is really enjoyable, with just a hundred or so new TF’s available this year you’d better be quick to buy a thoroughly British sports car.

So, MG is back - in fact the company’s positively thriving under new Chinese owners. That’s a remarkable story in itself, but even more amazing is that at £13,799 on the road; its latest TF135 is around £6,000 cheaper than the equivalent 2000 model. Not only does it comfortably undercut its arch rival, the Mazda MX5, by over £3,500; for looks and specification, there’s little to touch it at the price. Am I the only one whose blood ran cold when mini cabriolets like the Micra CC and Vauxhall Tigra were launched?
